Palin Kills a Caribou

This week’s episode of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” presented one of rural America’s favorite past-times: hunting in the great outdoors. On Palin’s agenda was a caribou hunting trip with her father, Heath:
After animal activists complained about the “controversial” hunting sequence on Palin’s TLC program, the former vice presidential candidate responded via Facebook:
Tonight‘s hunting episode of Sarah Palin’s Alaska “controversial”? Really? Unless you’ve never worn leather shoes, sat upon a leather couch
or eaten a piece of meat, save your condemnation of tonight’s episode. I remain proudly intolerant of anti-hunting hypocrisy. :)
Ted Nugent must’ve really enjoyed the episode. In a pre-show interview with the bloggers at SPAlaska.com, the classic rocker and hunting enthusiast praised God and his hunting “bloodbrothers” for the glory that is hunting (or what The Nuge calls a real “hands-on connection to that which sustains us”). Palin is in good company among Nugent’s conservationist “heroes” Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone:
Next week’s sneak peek: Palin‘s rugged Alaskan lifestyle brings TLC’s mother-of-eight, Kate Gosselin, to tears:

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 7:10pmI have no gripes with hunting but I have to laugh at the video of ole Ted. He seems like a crazy man. The best hunters around here are the Hmong. They actually walk on the ground rather than drive around on an ATV.

Sarah’s great, don’t get me wrong. But when she asked “Does it kick?” I knew right away she doesn’t hunt much.

The truth be known, I also believe the good old boys from Washington DC would be scare to death if she came to town. I love it and I only hope she gets that chance. Hang in there Sarah Palin, we do believe in you lady and we love you. Just stick to your guns and good things will come to pass I am sure of it. God bless this Christian Nation.

Her dad fell down heavily in low brush going down a hill earlier and must have messed up the scope. How would a person with an IQ over 80, even one who had never hunted before, figure out the scope was not sighted in properly?
Report Post »Well, she took 4 shots and all were high apparently.
She took Becker’s rifle and knocked down the caribou first shot.

My son and grandsons all hunt and are excellent shots with guns and bows and my son said if you just “bump” the sights, it can mess the whole deal up. It makes sense to me. And yes, they will just stand there unless they feel threatened. He kept moving around, he just couldn’t figure out what was going on.

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 7:45pmI don’t think she is currently the hunter you might believe from her stories. She may have been a more active hunter – pre-kids or pre-elected official. You get to a lot of neat stuff in your late teens/twenties that you really have to stretch to ever do again.

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 7:49pmShe’s not Daniel Boone or anything and stories of hunting prowess are probably exaggerated but I would still take her on wilderness survival over most people. It was actually nice to see that they didn’t cut out the missed shots to make her look better. Any of us that hunt know that even if your rifle was sighted in before the hunt it can be knocked off wandering around the wilderness. Anyone who hasn‘t missed a shot hasn’t shot very much.

I can still shoot…as proven when I went target practicing with my son, brother, and grandsons a few months ago. I was never that great with a pistol, but I proved, I could still hit what I needed to hit. If you have it, it might get rusty, but you never really lose it. Posted on December 6, 2010 at 7:29pmMaybe not. If your read about the buffalo hunters – the guys that did it for the skins, not the meat. They would sit and shoot thru a whole herd. As long as they didn’t wound any animals, they could keep shooting. The noise didn’t alert the animals. As soon as they “missed” and wounded one, it was over and the buffalo became aware of a threat and ran.

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 9:26pmIt’s not unusual for an animal to stand like that while being shot at. It‘s trying to figure out what’s going on. The shot is off in the distance in the animal’s perspective. We don’t really know how far away she was from the caribou.
Report Post »I’ve been in the exact place she was in. It took me three shots once to hit a deer due to a scope that had been bumped. The shot that got him was luck. He stood there and looked at me until I got him.
I had my son hunting with me once when he was young. He shot two boxes plus of 410 slugs at a herd of about 10 whitetail deer and they never left the field. Course he never hit any of them at that age. Today he’s 26yrs old, and the deer tremble at the mention of his name :)

Understood here, was taken by my Gramps deer hunting when I was about six. He explained every part of the hunt, and exactly (to the last detail) of how I was to be behind him in one spot for everyone to be safe. The spot was to the back left of him, where a boulder would keep me out of sight of the deer.
Whatever though, it was a fine hunt, and with my Gramp’s so I was happy.

Posted on December 9, 2010 at 10:23amOn the fourth episode of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” Palin, her father Chuck Heath and a family friend headed above the Arctic Circle to go caribou hunting.
It took Palin a few shots to hit a caribou and since that clip aired, Palin naysayers have been having a field day over whether she’s a bad shot, while Palin supporters have jumped to her defense, pointing out that the gun she was using at first was off.
POLITICO spoke to Nick Seifert, a sportsman and conservation advocate who hosted the “Straight Shooting” segment of “American Gun Dog” for five seasons and had a 12-year career with Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines, about Palin’s skills as a hunter.
“Technically, it wasn’t perfect, but to me it seemed honest. Unlike a lot of shows that cut everything out, that was a fairly honest hunt,” said Seifert.
As for what was technically off, Seifert said Palin “shot a lot of times, it’s hard to say what kind of shot she is.” But Seifert noted that Palin “had a good rest, she was calm and she squeezed the trigger.”
“That’s the hardest part,” he said, “to calm yourself down when you are going to kill a big game animal. She did a good job there.”
On how often Palin hunts, Seifert said that she struck him as the kind of person who does not hunt every weekend: “She has probably hunted big game a number of times. She probably hunts once a year or every couple years.”
Palin also took heat for the questions she asked her father about the gun kicking and when to shoot, but Seifert said that he has heard experienced hunters ask similar questions. “You don’t want to injure the animal,” he said.
Another big criticism of Palin’s hunt was that the caribou did not move when she shot, even though she missed a few times. Could it have been an editing room trick or did that caribou really stand there? “That was a young caribou. I hate to say it, but caribou are some of the dumbest animals,” said Seifert.
Seifert also watched the video of Palin and her father and friend packing up the meat to take back to Wasilla. He explained that “In Alaska, you have to take all edible portions of the animal. When they take the rib meat out, it is above and beyond what most hunters do. I give them credit for that, they did that correctly.”
Seifert’s biggest criticism of the Palin hunt: “She shot when the animal was on the horizon. … You need to know where your backstop is. The bullet could go a little bit further. It’s not like they’re going to hit a house, but by the strictest rule, that’s something you shouldn’t do.”
Seifert’s conclusion? “It seemed realistic to me, and I’m a pretty harsh critic of that because I see a lot of unrealistic stuff out there on hunting channels. I thought it was an honest hunt and I thought there are a lot of people out there who would like to have that kind of time with their dad.”
