Pandemic Possible? Scientist Genetically Modifies Bird Flu With Scary Results

Deadly Flu Virus Modified to Show Possibility of Human Transmissibility

Five tweaks is all it took for a team of virologists at Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands to genetically modify the H5N1 virus — commonly known as bird flu — and make it something some have said should not have been created while others advocate its importance in transmissibility studies.

According to Science Magazine’s Science Insider, Ron Fouchier genetically modified H5N1 to be easily transmissible to ferrets, which are an animal that react in a similar fashion to humans with regard to the flu. Science Insider reports that a separated study conducted by virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of Tokyo with H5N1 achieved similar results in terms of transmissibility of the genetically altered virus.

Science Insider has more:

Both studies have been submitted for publication, and both are currently under review by the U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB), which on a few previous occasions has been asked by scientists or journals to review papers that caused worries.

NSABB chair Paul Keim, a microbial geneticist, says he cannot discuss specific studies but confirms that the board has “worked very hard and very intensely for several weeks on studies about H5N1 transmissibility in mammals.” The group plans to issue a public statement soon, says Keim, and is likely to issue additional recommendations about this type of research. “We’ll have a lot to say,” he says.

“I can’t think of another pathogenic organism that is as scary as this one,” adds Keim, who has worked on anthrax for many years. “I don’t think anthrax is scary at all compared to this.”

Some scientists say that’s reason enough not to do such research. The virus could escape from the lab, or bioterrorists or rogue nations could use the published results to fashion a bioweapon with the potential for mass destruction, they say. “This work should never have been done,” says Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute who has a strong interest in biosecurity issues.

Aside from a potential outbreak from the lab where the genetically modified virus is kept, Ebright is expressing his reserve over what’s called dual use research, or research that is meant to help the public, but could also be used against it. Here’s a video dialogue about dual use research from NSABB:

The point of both studies, according to Science Insider, was to see if this disease could ever have pandemic potential, which means it would need to be passable from human to human. In its current form H5N1 is not generally passed from human to human but from birds to humans. It is the flu that, according to Daily Mail, killed more than 500 people since 2004.

New Scientist reports that Fouchier recently presented his results at a scientific meeting about the flu, and here’s what the researchers did to modify the virus:

H5N1 Modified to be Passed Between Humans

They first gave H5N1 three mutations known to adapt bird flu to mammals. This version of the virus killed ferrets, which react to flu viruses in a similar way to humans. The virus did not transmit between them, though.

Then the researchers gave the virus from the sick ferrets to more ferrets — a standard technique for making pathogens adapt to an animal. They repeated this 10 times, using stringent containment. The tenth round of ferrets shed an H5N1 strain that spread to ferrets in separate cages — and killed them.

The process yielded viruses with many new mutations, but two were in all of them. Those plus the three added deliberately “suggest that as few as five are required to make the virus airborne”, says Fouchier. He will now test H5N1 made with only those five.

All the mutations have been seen separately in H5N1 from birds. “If they occur separately, they can occur together,” says Fouchier. Malik Peiris of the University of Hong Kong, a flu virologist, says this means H5N1 transmissible between humans can evolve in birds, where it is circulating already, without needing to spend time in mammals such as pigs.

Some scientists such as Peter Palese, a flu specialist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, New Scientist reports, have said they don’t think the virus would be able to mutate to be able to be passed from human to human, and therefore reach pandemic proportions. But others have said just because it hasn’t mutated to that point yet, doesn‘t mean it won’t.

Science Insider reports that the U.S. National Institute of Health funded this research. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, the Food and Drug Administration already has a vaccine that could protect humans from this flu, especially in the event of it beginning to spread between humans.

Science Insider reports that the U.S. National Institute of Health funded this research and states that Fouchier expects “a media storm” to result once NSABB issues its statement and the papers are officially published.

There’s no way to prepare yourself for a deadly virus. Just pray that you have a very strong immune system. Those with weak immune systems will perish. This flu will be worse than the pandemic of 1918-1919.

I don’t get it. Does this say that changing this DNA thingy that a virus can have different capabilities? Would that mean, by extension, that the DNA in living species could change, and give rise to a new species that would replace the ones that have become extinct?

You need to google “Doctor Mary’s Monkey”…it is a true story…the polio vaccine (200,000,000 doses) given to AMERICAN school CHILDREN was tainted with a CANCER CAUSING VIRUS! A mistake was made while preparing the vaccines and rather than RECALL and be HONEST about the mistake…the 200 million doses were administered! THEN…the scientists decided to try to create an antidote to the cancer virus vaccine and caused further mutations to occur which MAY (some believe) have led to the creation of the AIDS virus…look it up…you will be shocked!

FYI…We lost 3200 innocent people on 9/11…we loose 3000 people every day in this country to CANCER…Cancer is an epidemic in AMERICA! You have to wonder why?

This is kind of like the old joke about the 2 scientists. One comes in the lab screaming “I’ve finally done it! I’ve created an acid that will eat through anything!“ The other scientist says ”Great! What are you going to store it in?” I don’t think God will have to lift a finger, we’re going to destroy ourselves somehow in the long run.

This is what this virus does. It changes its structure yet still kills. Only it kills the structure it has changed to. Just like progressives, communists and Marxist. They say they are for the Constitution and then want to change the Bill of Rights. It’s death to Freedom. Are you for the death of the Bill of Rights JeZuS?
This virus, as with Communism, should never have been made. It’s as scary as your words. Come on back JeZuS. I’m waiting for you. I have heard it said that, bio warfare is the poor mans nuclear bomb. I believe it. We can stop research, but they won;t stop their research in Moscow, Pongyang, Tehran or other places.

My first thought of an outbreak of avian flu virus is that a person would be wise to immune suppressing drugs like transplant patients have. I figure a person would need 1 to 2 weeks worth. By that time the immune system should have cleared the virus without the over the top immune response that wipes everything.

Metaphysically speaking, studying leprosy, rabies & avian flu is very instructive. One can bring away a lot of lessons.

They MUST find a drug that they can Patent, so they can claim they have cured it! Bottom line; it is ALL ABOUT MONEY! You are a number and the medical community is NOT on your side! They don’t care about you. The TRUTH is, the One World Government crew, calling itself The New World Order including the U.N. is looking to exterminate as many people as possible; see http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/magazine/17-05/ff_guidestones?currentPage=all, where the Ten Commandments for the New World Order have been written. The First commandment is to maintain the population of the world to less than 500 Million people. See these stones and listen to the commentary at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cWYDWlwqWw How can this be done? By creating viruses that can quickly make the world population sick and die? By genetically altering our food supply seed, like Monsanto did with BT Corn that modifies the bodies immune system such that natural bacteria used to digest food begins to manufacture deadly poisons instead and we kill ourselves! How about medical incompetence? I watched my father-in-law die in the hospital of simple fibrillation during a heart attack, when all he needed was a shock from a defibrillator, but I did not know how to administer it. Yes, we are only numbers. No one cares for us but God.

aids originated out of affrica. not polio vaccines in the us. While it is stupid to try to make bugs more deadly there is no reason to fear monger. Viruses adapt to survive, as do animals. When a virus learns to feed on an animal you have an influx of mortality (usually below 50%) and the surviving population goes on to produce offspring more capable of fighting off the virus. When man tries to intervene in this process the results are bad. Look at chicken pox. People who have not fought off chicken pocks in their youth due to vaccination are more likely to contract shingles in their old age because their body never developed the mechanism to fend off the similar illness

MONK, yes, the mutation(s) that allow viruses to spread through the air is pretty frightening. If a virus like Ebola could spread through airborne particles like a cold virus, the world would be in a lot of trouble very quickly. Hey, did you know whales have vestigial leg bones? Now why would a whale have those?

As for your metaphor, I give it a D-. Too forced. Stretched way too thin. Next time, try using cancer for your comparison. It’s a little overused, but not so lame.

Now vaccines can be raised against a potentially deadly form of transmissible H5N1. Bird flu that gets passed to humans multiplies and propagates in the lower lung. The mutations that occur in the virus that make it airborne are mutations that allow for upper respiratory manifestation and infestation. The lower lung infection doesn’t get “coughed out” like the upper. A single nucleotide change (mutation) causes the bird flu to become human compatible. Two to three alternate amino acid changes and it becomes airborne.

Now that scientists know the location within the coat protein of the virus that the mutations occur, drugs can be made to combat the disease. Before they had no idea, so if by chance a human to human transmissible form of the bug were to develop, we wouldn’t be prepared. Now we can be.

But your point wasn’t about viruses ….. was it? Darwin knew there were glitches in his theory. Selection pressures will cause something ………… we haven’t PROVEN what that something is. The difference is that fighting both HIV (not the symptomatic AIDS) and cancer with the immune system would mean having the body attack itself. Obviously that’s not good. Talk to anyone with Lupus. Antibodies raised against the pathogens intercept the pathogen. HIV is enveloped with host tissue and cancer IS host tissue. You can’t fight against that using the immune system unless you find something extremely unique to the affected cells/pathogenic bodies.

There have been recent reports about finding such markers with HIV but no medical studies have been carried out. Also, vaccinations for HIV would be a plausible research area, but after the debate over HPV vaccinations, how do you think the HIV vaccination debate is going to go?

Mother Nature is the smartest thing going whether you are an athiest or believer in a God. Mother Nature resolves every contradiction and resolves every problem. Mother Nature allows species to die when Her environment no longer supports them, and then creates new creatures to replace them. Mother Nature is dispassionate. She lets species rise and fall.

The human species is unique in that they are able to make conscious decisions and can control to some degree their environment, their relationships with others of the same species with whom they compete for the same territory and resources.

I recall the Russkies did the same with smallpox back when the USA decided to stop immunization for it. Interestingly the Russkies succeeded in doing some really good genetic research AND they created one hell of a bug. The reason for their research wasn’t a result of “Hey, let’s see what other methods we can use to destroy every living human“ but rather ”Crap, we can’t afford the nukes anymore….it is much cheaper to do genetic research and weaponize biologicals”.

‘Bakko Bucks’! At any rate, all of you(maybe not people here, but everyone else) that have been getting your flu shots like good little sheeple already have the basic ingredients for the recombination. It’s not mutation, it’s recombination. The virus has ‘tags’ and they combine to make new new strains. Once you get a certain strain, it will recombine with the ‘attenuated virus’ already present in your own bodies. The people dumb enough to get flu shots will be the ‘weaponizing’ agent, not the birds.

I thought that was the number to the Mexican Swine FLu that came over in 2004 after they sent a Mexcian boy to Texas to be saved. Then it spread all around.

They covered the original name up with the H? number which was for another flu already named. Govt did not want free trade and touisim to Mexico to stop for just the measly ol’ flu. Many died becasue of profit and free trade, only a begining I think

IT IS THE MEXICAN SWINE FLU dont let them fool you again!

That was H1N1 that happened in 2009. “H1N1” and “H5N1” are subtypes of the flu virus. The flu virus mutates quickly which is the reason that flu shots are not 100% effective.

I want to know that as well; now the genie is out of the bottle, for the only thing that makes something difficult to make or manufacture is the very first model, such as with this bird flu strain, and now anyone who has enough know how and gets the info can unleash a potential pandemic of massive proportions — say between the post WW1 ‘spanish flu” to the ‘black death’ of middle ages Europe.

Its the Mexican Swine Flu not bird flu. They swapped the name to keep up trade with Mexico and killed hundreds as it spread around the world because of visiting Mexico

Just imagine what we DON’T know about. I think this just shows you how “godless” we have become and a people. Research is important but somethings it is just evil doings by evil men, to allow others evil men the opportunity to inflict their control over us

Conservative Scientist: I have created a cancer that will only attack and kill liberals. Nuck nuck nuck.

If they can invent “flux capacitor” , then they can create a black hole. Geeez!

      The flux capacitor already exists.

It’s called a memristor (memory resistor).

It joins other fundamental circuit elements like the resistor, capacitor, inductor, and the vacuum tube (transistor).
