SAN DIEGO (The Blaze/AP) – Yesterday, the Blaze reported that the military “handled” a situation involving Marine snipers who posed with a logo resembling a Nazi symbol. But now, just a day after the initial report made its way around the blogosphere, news is breaking that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has asked the Marine Corps to take another look at its investigation that concluded the men should not be disciplined.

As we reported, Lt. Col. Stewart Upton initially said in a statement that the Marines’ action was unacceptable. While no harsh penalties were paid by the soldiers involved, the sentiment was that, to a degree, the situation had been contended with.

Apparently, verbal warnings, though, weren’t enough. Pentagon press secretary George Little says that Panetta asked the Marine Corps Friday to look into the situation “and to take appropriate action.”

CNN reports that, following the initial discovery of the image, the Marines’ commander decided not to proceed with disciplinary action. However, those individuals involved were told that such behavior wouldn’t be tolerated and that punishment would result if, indeed, they partook in similar conduct again.

So, while the men were “punished” in the sense of receiving a warning and clarification as a result of their actions, no official military retribution was doled out — an action that is clearly now being revisited and reassessed.

The Marine Corps said it became aware of the photo last November and investigated, but found it not to be racially motivated, according to a statement released by a Marine Corps spokesman, Lt. Col. Stewart Upton.

“Those involved acknowledged that the symbol could be misinterpreted and is not in keeping with our Marine Corps ethos and values,” the statement said.

Little, speaking in Washington, says racist and anti-Semitic symbols have absolutely no place alongside U.S. service members.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights group, has demanded President Barack Obama order an investigation and hold the troops accountable.

    Please anyone who served would know that whatever banner elected used was chosen long before these men were born.and with that said if you notice what flag is on top?All too often banners,flags and patches must be approved before put into use.And if the double lightning ss bolts are being used to denote a troop the higher ups knew and approved.Snipers are Slow and Steady,and take great pains to acomplish their mission. Not only that combat does strange things to even the most solid psyche. Have been retired for far too long to get upset with these guys for having a sense of humor. Is it something that I would have done. Very likely not, but I am not where they are right now. If you really want to do something other than whine, grow a pair, enter the service and go over there and correct these rock hard men who are trained to hunt down human prey and kill them out beyond a thousand meters.

      This is a non issue. If this is supposed to represent the ss, then it does not represent marine corps core values (I was not a jarhead just a dog) but if you look at any unit patch you could find something offensive in interpretation of any of them. I would not have thought ss first if at all but 2 lightning bolts. This is about being PC which is killing us. In fact if memory serves the ss was wiped out by der fuhrer to make him look like a hero to the people for eliminating his own harassment and snatch and grab squads allowing him to gain more power. For lack of better examples think Star Wars episode 3 when the emperor created the enemy and a secret army to wipe them out when the time was right and be praised for it and elevated in power. I do identify with jews and know persecution.       Solution is to disband the USMC, and AF; Costitution requires an Army and Navy, but they could be 10 ships (Make sure you inclide the ‘new’ Gabrielle Giffords’, and 5000 soldiers; and the ‘outsource’ the military function to China; and with the ‘peace divident’ pay down the national debt…..

      This is what happens when we have 24-7 media coverage. When I was a youngster, I thought as a youngster in that, I thought the Nazi SS had the coolest uniforms ever designed, The color, banners, badges, head gear, you name it. They were master at this. I still think their uniforms were top notch. Note that I naver said I condoned anything they did.       Unless you’re a Marine, I don‘t think it’s obvious that this particular SS stands for Scout Sniper.
      Anyone familiar with this particular Nazi insignia would recognize it immediately. It’s a dumb move to use anything related to Nazis as a logo for your club.
      That being said, yes, this is a waste of time. But they should have known better.

      The SS is for Scout Sniper. The band KISS uses a similar font for the S in their name. Heck, even ACDC uses a similar symbol in between AC and DC. These folks accusing our Marines are trying to make something out of NOTHING, just to malign them.     Looks like Gibbs, Tony, Magee, and Ziva will have their hands full for a while! Having seen so much heavy handed decisions made in my twenty plus years in the Army, I almost figure that command will put out an order making cameras contraband to all Marines below E7. PC run amuck and Panetta will make this a priority investigation over actual criminal activity, Gotta CYA for the media.

    The SS is for Scout–Sniper. Those young Marines can kill at over a thousand yard. Thier very valuable in combat operations and have great pride in the kills they make. The flag in the photo wasn’t done with a sheet and magic marker. I have seem the SS of Scout–Sniper in many differnt forms over the years.
    Remember if it moves kill it. If it’s dead piss on it.
    Marines defend the Constitution even unto death. That is probly the reason for this persecution by the Administration of Pres. Obama.

      MANCHURIAN.CANDIDATE, I’ve had a number of relatives who fought in WWII, both theaters of operations. My father was drafted at the start of the Korean War, and more relatives served in Vietnam. I entered the service not quite two years after Vietnam ended. Well before retiring I did three tours in Europe serving mostly in Germany with a stint at SACEUR security at SHAPE, Belgium. I’ve not only seen the horrors of what members of the SS committed while visiting some of the former concentration camps. I also got to witness first hand what Communism brought to the borders of East Germany and Czechoslovakia. As well before entering the service I study military history and know the atrocities committed by certain German units as well the horrors committed by the Japanese. Oddly enough the Japanese flags are for some reason seen as politically correct. In this day and age where crosses in jars of urine is considered art, a movie was made about killing President Bush, and God knows what other atrocious acts of depravity is now considered just fine by the public at large, and you choose a silly banner to tie your mind into such a knot about. Then as I mentioned about somebody else here, you are a wannabe victim. If anything, maybe these young men maybe should get a verbal slap on the wrist and warned not to do it again. Frankly, with Panetta in the mix it will be a heavy handed lynching of their careers. Apparently you will be there rooting for their blood.

    I would have thought our current administration would have been pleased considering the fact they all act like National Socialists at the WH these days.

    On a side note, it might not be a good idea to pick a fight with these guys, they might take the pledge of protecting and defending our Constitution to the next level. Not an accusation of intent, just an observation of facts.

      Why would you punish an elite murder squad for paying tribute to an elite murder squad from history?(I’m not saying they are just that they should have freedom if they choose).

      The war with Germany is over in case you didn’t get the news in your comfortable box, we’ve got new wars to fight. It’s no different than a flag with a Spartan or Native American symbol.

There should be a requirement for all to read Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers”.(The book not the stupid movie.) You should not be allowed to command combat troops unless you have been a combat trooper. This goes for everyone from the newest butter bar to the CinC. You are not fit to lead unless you have fought……..Just sayin’

    I don’t care what these Marines did with a damned poster. I care about what HELL they go through every day of their lives in the hellholes they are supposed to defend. I care that every move they make, every word they speak and every picture they take is scrutinized by someone wanting to find something to be outraged over.

    Get off their backs and start defending them Mr. Panetta.
