Paper Details Obama Admin’s Alleged Secret Note Sent to Iran: If Israel Attacks, We Won’t Get Involved

The Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot published a startling report Monday detailing a message it says was conveyed by the Obama administration – via two European countries – to Iranian officials. The request: if Israel decides to strike Iranian nuclear facilities, the U.S. will not support it and the Islamic Republic should refrain from retaliating on U.S. military installations in the Persian Gulf.
From the report by the well-connected diplomatic correspondent Shimon Schiffer [translated via hard copy by TheBlaze in Israel]:
The message that the U.S. conveyed to Iran via the most sensitive secret channels is unequivocal: if Israel attacks, we won’t stand behind her and we won’t be drawn into war.
In recent days, senior American administration officials turned to their Iranian counterparts via two countries in Europe which act as a back-channel during times of crisis. They made clear to the Iranians that the U.S. does not intend to be sucked into a campaign if Israel decides to strike unilaterally and without advance coordination [with the U.S.], and they said that they expect from Iran that it will not attack strategic American targets in the Persian Gulf. That means, among other things, Army bases, Navy ships and aircraft carriers sailing in the region.
Israeli outlet Yediot Ahronot shows strategic U.S. military installments in the Middle East.
Accompanying the article, the newspaper created a graphic map (pictured above) of various U.S. assets in the region including troops in Afghanistan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia as well as U.S. vessels in the Gulf.
The secret contacts with the Iranians combined with a public statement last week by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey that he won’t be “complicit” in an Israeli attack is being interpreted in Israel as a message from the U.S. that the Jewish state is on its own in stopping Iran from obtaining a doomsday weapon with which to threaten the very existence of Israel. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other Iranian leaders have articulated a desire to wipe Israel off the map. Schiffer writes:
Israeli sources point to the unprecedented low-point in relations between the U.S. and Israeli defense establishments. It appears that the Obama administration decided to warn decision-makers in Israel of the destructive results of an attack without coordinating with the U.S. […]
If true, the report begs the question: If he truly wants to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapons capability, why is President Obama investing in secret contacts with Iran about an Israeli strike aimed at destroying – or at least setting back – the nuclear program? Wouldn’t his efforts be better focused on warning Ahmadinejad of the dire consequences of his apparently accelerated efforts at one day possessing a military nuclear capability?
The Wall Street Journal may have an answer in an editorial this weekend. Though President Obama likes to say he has Israel’s “back,” “his Administration tries to sell to the public a make-believe world in which Iran’s nuclear intentions are potentially peaceful, sanctions are working and diplomacy hasn’t failed after three and half years.”
Also on Monday, The New York Times reported that President Obama is trying to find non-military ways to stall an Israeli attack and restrain Iran’s nuclear march, including naval exercises and new antimissile systems in the Persian Gulf. The Times reports that Obama officials are also considering implementing previously rejected covert activities as well as a new declaration by the president over what would prompt a U.S. military strike.

Hmmmm….that all kinda adds up to something now doesn’t it. Oh and the name Barack HUSSEIN Obama says it all. This is not a conspiracy just a culmination of the facts. He is a Muslim and has stated he would support the muslim states if it comes down to it. What more evidence do people need to know and understand this? Israel’s air defense umbrella is deeply integrated with US equipment and logistical support. Our capabilitities in the region surpass the Israelis to the tune of about 7 min of advanced warning to missel threats that we can detect before the Israelis do. The real question is will we assist with our quicker detection systems, or will we leave them alone to respond based on their own capabilities.
Report Post »When people get so worked up about our “support” for the Jewish State, or lack threof, it sounds like they expect American boots on the ground, or fighter jets in the air…HUGE mistake. Believe me, the Israelis are fully ready and cacpable to $hit-hammer any combined threat in the region. We will always back Israel, however, just not in the knee-jerk reactionary way so many Monday morning generals that post on some of these sites think.
Iran is going to get what they’ve been asking for pretty soon, and if these other nations want to get involved like they did 3 times in the previous century, my feeling is that the Israelis will not show the painful resstraint that they were forced to in ‘67 and ’73. God bless Bibi, Ehud, and the rest of the Jewish heroes as they write their nations next, and most important chapter.

This would be utterly irresponsible of us due to our already heavy involvement with Afganistan, and the possibility of being drawn into the Syrian conflict. Don’t you realize that being drawn into a war with a nuclear Iran and Israel will most likely start WWIII? Many of those who voted for President Obama did so because of his ideas on foreign policy, and we were terribly embarrassed by Pres. Bush’s “cowboy” mentality when it came to foreign policy. I‘d must rather have a president who tries all diplomatic avenues before entering into an armed conflict than one who doesn’t. Candidate Romney has been completely irresponsible in his thoughtless comments regarding this subject and shows his lack of any foreign policy smarts.

I will concede that in a sense, Obama being elected was a good thing considering McCain’s progressive ways would have not helped the country either. Also, having Obama elected shows the population why the Left is inept when it comes to properly governing the country. Hence, this is why Governor Mitt Romney will win in 2012.

I applaud a “diplomatic mentality” regarding foreign policy.
You applaud a “cowboy mentality” regarding foreign policy.
I do care what other countries think of us, realizing it is one of the most important things for a successful foreign policy.
You do not care what other countries think of us and therefore do not care about having a strong anad successful foreign policy.
Obviously, we couldn’t be more different in the way we see the world, but one thing we have in common is that we both care very much about Israel and will stand with her – I just won’t be bullied into war by their leader, and anyone who thinks being bullied into war is okay, doesn‘t have American’s best interest in mind.

Thank you! I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. The article isn’t about how Obama is conspiring with Iran to oust Israel, it‘s about how America doesn’t (or shouldn’t) want to be flung into another war!
Israel is our ally. But if they act unilaterally without our consideration or coordination we wont, and shouldn’t, support them! I don’t want anymore Americans dying so that my gas can be a dollar cheaper.

As I have said before, this is Israel’s fight, not ours. I hate entitlements because they make someone dependent and weaker. The same goes for foreign entitlements. I prefer Israel to handle their foreign affairs like a true sovereign country – instead of a USA puppet state.
I dont know exactly how Israel/Iran handle it any more than how US/Iran would handle it. I presume Israel has many contingencies. The best is probably a surgical strike with possibly a covert unit on the ground to finish it off (think of how they did it for Iraq).
I dont know what the outcome will be, but Israel surely knows the potential risks and retaliation that would come as a result. Israel currently has a cost/benefit equation going on, which balances the possibility of Iran’s responses. However, if USA does it – there are very few short term risks/costs (they are more long term – out of sight out of mind) because we are half a world away and such an overwhelming force. That means that we are more prone to attack because we do not deal with the other side of the coin. The role of the USA should be to keep Russia, China, Syria, etc on the sidelines to prevent a world war

I think it comes down to enabling. Are Russia, China, Syria etc in a better (stronger self interest) to enable Iran as opposed to US enabling Israel? All countries could refrain from entering a Israel/Iran conflict yet support in a variety of ways…I suspect that is the equivalent of your term Cold War.
I would fear that Egypt, Libya, Syria, Iran would adopt the adage…”it’s easier to apologize than get permission” and decimate Israel. From our perspective our military has been our and many allies best defense. If this story is true, the playing field just changed dramatically and at least that part is maddening.

He wanted to get rid of the FED and at least slowly get rid of social programs. He is pro-life, anti- gay marriage etc. His at home policies are great. Can you please explain to me why you hate reducing the size of government? That is what Paul has been so serious about after all. Isn’t that what conservatives want? Romney/Ryan may start us off in the right direction but I really don‘t think they’ll dent the deficit and lessen the size of government on a big scale like I think RP would.

Whenever Israel gets involved in a major war, it turns into a dog pile, Egypt and Syria could easily strike (what better way to build unity than to channel them at an enemy everybody hates?), and the Ruskies and Chicomms will likely be providing support (at least if the cold war conventions still hold true and they want to back their allies).
Think of it like the US being able to take down China, but suddenly, Russia, the EU and a bunch of PO’ed countries in Latin America all decide to hit the US at once. We’re good, but against something like that, we could be in some trouble.
