Paranoid? Secret Service Now Treating Silverware as a Threat to President Obama

There are plenty of objects that shouldn’t be placed in the same vicinity as the President of the United States. Guns, for instance, or knives (at least, the kind that are at least as sharp as steak knives). But silverware? That’s a new one. Politico reports that the Secret Service has required guests at a lunch where the President was speaking this afternoon to surrender their forks and knives before Obama would enter the room:

“It’s very important that you use your utensils as soon as possible,” National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials board member Raquel Regalado told about 1000 delegates at the group’s annual conference.

Regalado hurried the diners to finish up their salads and pre-cut chicken breasts, saying that the Secret Service required that there be no knives at the tables and that the forks be rounded up before Obama entered the room.

“As you know, we’re having another speaker and there is some Secret Service involved. So there’s a reason why there’s no knives at your table and the forks will be collected. … And I’m not joking,” Regalado told the audience in a ballroom at Disney’s Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World. “So, like the good Hispanic mother I’m here to tell you to please, eat your lunch.”

A Secret Service spokesman confirmed that the agency made the request, but said such requirements are common at large events where the president speaks at about the same time people are dining.

Maybe this is what they're afraid of?

Now, naturally this kind of defensiveness raises questions – is Obama really in so much danger of being stabbed with a fork or a bread knife? And wouldn’t it be rather difficult to do that much damage without getting caught by the Secret Service first? What differentiates this from, say, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which also has a large number of participants and which, as far as we know, doesn’t require those participants to fork over their silverware.

But frankly, the question that interests us is – why just forks and knives? Surely spoons can do damage. Or has the Obama team never heard of a spork?

      What about the glassware – surely those could be broken to have a sharp shard that can cut? Or how about the plates – quite frisbee like, napkins could be fashioned into a slingshot and the salt and pepper shakers could be used as the projectiles.

      I imagine that request isn’t made at those celeb $40,000 plate dnners he loves to attend

      You guys just don’t get it, do you?

      The reason the utensils were removed was to reflect the fact that Obama sees:

      1. His AG under imminent threat of being held in contempt of Congress.

      2. The likelihood of Obamacare being ruled unconstitutional.

      3. The likelihood of the AZ Immigration law being held constitutional.

      After enduring a week like that, the reason for removing the silverware was to protect Obama from harming himself! That would be a shame, wouldn’t it? Glad to see the Secret Service was on top of this one.

      I doubt Obama made that decision or even knew about it. I also doubt it came directly from the SS (they are people of habit). So, where did it come from? It came from Obama’s staff, they don’t trust the Hispanics.
      What is shows me first is those who surround Obama are inexperience little children whose only life expensive is schools and living in luxury. They have not idea about real people.

      Second, they are racist.

      So this fork thing is just another example of the inept WH. Another point, one hires people with likeminded beliefs

      Denture reference reminds me about the female-democrat rep that was talking about some people in this country (it is possible), (but the rep. was “sticking-it-to” anyone that was against the proposed hlth-care bill,) that had to use a dead-person’s-tentures……And then the “strange” fellow in the movie “As-Good-As-It-Gets that brought his own plastic-utensils to a cafe. (To all dog-lovers..wasn’t Verdell the cutiest/sweetest dog EVER?..and “melted-the-heart“ of the ”strange” fellow. Great Flick!
      I trust the president’s handlers that they will keep him safe. Must be a tough-job to try and think what possible dangers are lurking around our president.

      That‘s OK they don’t have to register a silverware choice, (or any other) anymore, he just told them to forego wedding, and birthday gifts and donate to his campaign instead. Maybe the clinton’s have been back in the white house stealing the silver again, and he was gathering it up so he has a stash for after the get bill & hill out of there.     I have not seen any report the Secret Service (SS) has removed forks and knives from any of the celebrity functions, or any other dinner party or function. It only happened at a LATINO function and it appears that the Prez and the SS, at least subconsciously, have profiled the latinos and marked them as dangerous. Is this the true feelings of the prez and his ilk about the many millions of illegal latino immigrants coming to our country?

      Seems very racially profiling of him. As it’s already been mentioned, I doubt that any of his la-di-da rich people’s fund-raisers have been asked to surrender any of their silverware. What an insult to Latinos! Would they stand (or sit) for that if it was Romney who required it? I doubt it. And really – forks? With all the automatic weapons he’s sent into Mexico, I think forks should be the least of his concerns.

      This function was at Disney. Their catering food is really good. I used to work there for 4 years, and went to several catering functions at the Contemporary Resort, always World Class.

    The secret service detail is not only hung over, they are likely spending most of their time scoping out cleavage and asz. And pocketing the silverware to pay for the next hook.

    Such distractions leave the prez at great risk.

      Yes, I agree. Would they have been so cooperative if the request had been made by Romney? You know they wouldn’t, but the race card would have been flying! But because it’s Obama (as minority himself and liberal, not because he’s president), they probably laughed about it as they turned in their silverware. Wake up, people – he is not your friend! All he wants is money and votes – but he’s as much of a racial profiler as all the police that Latinos are always accusing of the same!
