Parents Attack Police During Wild Fight at NC High School Basketball Game

A brawl broke out at a Charlotte, NC high school basketball game on Friday after a father attacked a police officer who approached his daughter to tell her to return to her school’s side of the gym. After the father reportedly confronted the officer, the man, his wife, and daughter all started physically fighting with the officer and others who stepped in:
WCNC reports the father regrets the incident:
A man arrested at a CMS basketball game Friday night tells NewsChannel 36 he regrets what happened.
Ernest Owens said he was just trying to check on his daughter after he saw school resource officers approaching her.
The brawl happened at East Mecklenburg High School during the boys basketball game versus Butler High School. Owens‘ daughter plays for Butler’s girls basketball team, which had just wrapped up its game.
The video shows Owens’ wife jumping in, along with their daughter, and hitting the officer in the head.
NewsChannel 36 has been told the argument started when the resource officer asked Owens’ daughter to move from the East Meck side of the gym back to the Butler side.
It’s a common practice that students from different schools sit separately at high school games.
Owens said his daughter moved from East Mecklenburg to Butler High School this year, and there has been some tension between her and staff at her old school.
The father was arrested on multiple charges, and WCNC says more arrests are possible. No one was seriously injured and the school has not decided what action to take with the student.

The same situation in another story recently at a Waffle House, all the participants were black. Though that situation was not caused by a family acting poorly, it was people acting poorly. It is what it is and do not let the facts get in the way of your argument.
There is no “authority” in my freedom. I am not under the thumb of an “authority”. And so long as I am lawful, no “authority” has any business interfering with my freedom. Our freedoms are not predicated on some “authority” granting us them. We are guaranteed our freedom through The Bill Of Rights and the “authority” is constrained by The Constitution.
Stick your head back in the sand. The adults are talking here. Nothing racist about this, the video shows the facts. Not saying that the same BS is not happening with white perpetrators. Posted on January 31, 2011 at 11:56amI agree and disagree with MrLogan. I would say the overwhelming majority of the black population do not have political understanding or knowledge. They vote almost exclusively for either a democrat candidate, or more importantly, a black candidate. In my hometown in NC, there is a “black caucus” which solely supports black candidates running for office regardless if a white person is running on the democratic ticket. The black voters will meet at their church and the church will drive them to the polls in buses and vans, hand them a piece of paper with all the black candidates names, and tell them who to vote for.
Look at our prison systems in America. Even though about 20% of America is black, well over half of all inmates are black. Can’t fight the facts.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 12:12pm@Conservativeheeler Thank you for acknowledging my point on the political naivete of the black community. I try my best to make sure that I am politically educated as a black individual. I do have to disagree on the prison rates though. This table (http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/data/table_49.html) indicates that white people account for the majority of arrests for all crimes except robbery and gambling. But at 35.4%, blacks represent the highest percentage of the incarcerated population. It doesn’t really make sense if you think about it.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 12:28pmI erred, you did reply – I apologize. According to your definition there is no difference between a family attacking a police officer and two 20 year old drunk guys getting in a fistfight? Should all violent crimes receive the same punishment because, after all, violence is violence? Manslaughter is the same as first degree murder because … murder is murder. There is no nuance when it doesn’t fit your argument I suppose
Report Post »Edgar Bennet
Posted on January 31, 2011 at 12:34pmI don’t need to justify bad behavior … why do you? Is it realistic to believe at all that nobody except for black people were involved in brawls this month? That’s not a rhetorical question either, I actually want you to answer that.
Edgar Bennet
Posted on January 31, 2011 at 12:53pmNo of course not. And if there was video of a couple of black kids inviting an old friend over and then beating the tar out of them – it wouldn’t draw a comment from me at all. It’s the systematic crumbling of social norms that alarms me. Drunk people and former friends have always fought and I don’t care what the skin color. It‘s indicative of the culture and the area they live in not the fact that they’re black – but to deny that it‘s largely in black communities were ignorance isn’t chastised but glorified is again an error.
If in Northern Idaho some backwoods White Trash was making it seem like the US version of Beirut I would fret and opine just the same

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 1:44pmAnd now that I’m thinking … that data is from the Gov’t correct? You have to ask why would they not have a category for Hispanic/Mexican? That‘s not a coincidence considering there’s a category for Native American/Inuit and Asian/Islander. I wasn’t able to track down 2010, do you have it? It’s gotta be at least the first hypothesis the second is much more benign
Report Post »Rogue
Posted on January 31, 2011 at 1:46pm@ MrLogan – I’ll agree with others that the stats you provided are extremely skewed. When I looked at those figures, I first noticed how there is no per capita stats, which is crucial in your arguement. In 2010, black population was 12% in the US – whites were 64%. Leaving out the lack of hispanic statistics, we’ll just assume white is only whites, no other ethnicities included. If violent crime were equal across racial lines, black numbers would be only 1/5th of white numbers, and it’s clearly not the case.
Report Post »conservativeheeler
Posted on January 31, 2011 at 3:00pm@MRLOGAN…I think the more important statistic to concentrate on when looking at the chart you posted is the percentage of crimes that blacks committed. Logically there would be more whites arrested because America’s population, according to the 2010 census is 74.8% white and 12.4% black. Now look at your table about crime rates. The 12.4% black population accounts for 54.5% of murders, 55.8% of robberies, 41.6% of violent crimes, and 43.8% of illegal weapons possessions. These crimes, which should carry longer and more severe sentences, would account for the 35.4% of black inmates, because they commit these crimes at a much higher rate than any other ethnic group.

I’m neither promoting racism nor sticking up for “my people” (the people in this video or any of the other videos I mentioned from the Blaze are NOT my people), I just want to not see the bias. I just want to see good media. On crime and the charts, I agree, the charts are off, I do not deny that. I also agree that crime is more prevalent in the black community. All I‘m saying is I’ve seen multiple videos in the past month that portray blacks being violent but I’ve seen very few of any other race. Not just white, any other race. I’m not a “black power” or “black people first” racist at all. Most of my friends are white, my girlfriend is white. All I’m asking for is that there be no bias in reporting. I would agree with all of the people on this page that the people who caused this fight were idiots, boneheaded idiots, I’m not defending them or justifying their actions by saying “look, all races do this.” But the editors of the site are simply not giving examples of all races being belligerent.

So either this editor left and or cut stuff out or is simply an incompetent editor and or writer. Secondly this guy is not a “cop” but rather a school security guard.
This in no way defends their actions but the lack of information in this story is deafening.
Report Post »Who wrote this story? Who are they tied too? Why did the officer ask the teen to move if her game was over and she wanted to sit with friends that she probably knew from when she attended that school? How did the officer address the father of this child when he approached which he had every right to do? How did the father address the officer? Is this the fruit of a larger issue; if so what? Had this student and this security guard have any issues during the normal school day?
There is a lot that we do not know about this back story and this article for whatever reason chooses to leave it there.
Now I am not trying to defend them because we are black, I simply have trained eye and a keen understanding what needs to be done when you are trying to convey a message.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 9:58amNo, two very different issues.
1. This is what happens when enough people get video-capable phone and the rest of civilized society sees how these people act. Through Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Malik Shabazz they demand to be treated the same as whitey, but they refuse to act in a civilized way.
2. Cops have created the bad stereotype that they now feel victims of. They make a habit of abusing citgizens’ rights, then wonder why they’re not respected as a group.
Both groups are examples of getting the respect you deserve, not what you demand to get.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 9:05amstate Governors will have to defy the EPA, the fed Goverment and take Energy Policy into their own hands!!! Start drilling, Mining and Laying Pipeline!!! The EPA just pulled a 2007 permit out from WV, and are upping the STANDARDS on NEW permit applications to Mine and drill. The epa just increased it allowable ethonal content from 10% to 15% in gasoline—how stupid must we be to allow the fed Government to start burning FOOD SOURCES for energy? The Governors of our great states muty now redifine a UNITED STATES mentality, and in the name of saving AMERICA from global oil catastrophe, we need to start putting the PEOPLE back in charge and start eliminating the control and power of the Fed Government!!! The policies they are implemnting without DUE PROCESS: Voting, reading the bills, writing the bills its CRIMINALWHAT THE FED GOVERNMENT IS DOING to us, WE THE PEOPLE!! The Local/state Governors have to start taking leadership seriously!! They need to bypass the Circus in DC and start a new wave of saving America without DC!!
The DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE specifically states its OUR DUTY to abollish and dissolve an abusive and destructive Government that rules without the consent of the people— we are at that point!!! This Fed Government is ABUSIVE and DISTRUCTIVE== Pleasse write your Governors to speak out and start ACTING!! Please call Governors of Alaska, Texas, Louisianna, Florida etc— lets take this energy crisis and use common sense to become energy independent!!

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 10:15amThe parents need to have a fair dose of reality and discipline for themselves; and for any children they are raising as well. This is once again another example of the progressives means of destruction of the American values that have been part of the country since the founding.
It is ultimately a game, and to lose control this way is degrading to everyone across the board.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 12:34pmWhat do you expect……professional sports sets the tone. Like it or not,,the professional sports teams, actors, singers, etc., are role models in our society. When children and adults see that violence on the professional sporting events, famouos actor/actresses, singers, etc., fighting, abusing alchohol, using drugs,,,,,well, it’s inevitable that that mentality will flow into our population.
When there is so little respect in the communities that citizens fight with cops in front of crowds, we have a major social breakdown.
Just sayin’.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 1:16pmObviously, I have observed a trend not many others have not. People, it’s not a black thing,,,it’s not a hispanic thing, it’s a ghetto thing. Ghetto being defined as a lower income, less apt to be college educated, urban blight thing. Here’s the kicker,,,,ghetto’s are now a huge collection of neighborhoods throughout the United States – and is everincreasing at an accelarated rate. The worse the economy gets, the faster the middle class falls into low income and the angrier people get. I’ve seen people of ALL nationalities acting out with evil tendancies at an increasing rate. Stop labeling ghetto attitude with black and take the blinders off.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 1:44pmSilent watcher, if that is the case then have the blaze and every other news outlet show equally these types of outbursts. Recently on this site there was the Wendy’s beating, the Ihop fight, and now a high school. Enough is enough. Sure every race has it’s issues, but let’s see the proof in the video.
Then let’s ask ourselves, why is it that people have no dignity or self respect. I’ve been broke before and I never acted like that.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 2:42pmThis fight was over a police officer asking someone to move from where they were seated and then this person’s mother and father (great influences and kuddos on your child rearing) decided to get into a fist fight over it? Are you kidding me? I guess they felt “Dissed” and had to resort to violence instead of being human and just moving. The officer was trying to keep the peace by moving them to the side of the gym where their team’s fan were. People like this deserve to be tased multiple times for their own good and to made an example to others.
@GODLOVINMOM Your statement, “better neighborhoods and money make you act like responsible humanbeings…think not…” doesn’t seem to follow the data that show that police are more frequently (by a large number) called to go to bad neighborhoods with less money. Think what you want, but remember the guy in this video thought it wise to fight a cop over being asked to move. Answer- you both are wrong!

I read MORE about black violence, than any other violence to date. Doesn‘t mean there isn’t any amongst whites or hispanics, it’s just not reported as often because there seems to be MORE violence amongst black population.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 3:01pmLet’s read between the lines here. The daughter got kicked out of Butler school and that is why she is at the other school. Let me guess….she had behavioral problems at Butler school. Gosh not to hard to figure out where her behavior problems stem from. I am so sick and tired of these parents who complain that there child is being mistreated at a school and some how it is the school’s fault. If parents of underachieving children would get off their asses and start teaching their children how to conduct themselves in society and help them do their homework, we wouldn’t have this problem, but when you have a loser dad and mom this is what results from it.

Posted on February 1, 2011 at 9:41pmto Waggie,,,,not one person blamed the progressives during this whole conversation….you are the only one that brought it up.
I do agree that people need to control themselves, set proper examples for their children,,,but that is not happening. More and more examples of barbaric attitudes are occurring in public and I strongly believe, as a result, that our society is truely crumbling.
I don’t know what the statistics are regarding crimes committed by blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, etc., but my point was that the term ghetto, IN MY OPINION, is not exclusive to blacks. Ghetto, aka barrio, slums, low income, etc. And yes, I agree that not all people who reside in low income areas (which I said was at an ‘everincreasing rate’ and seems to escalating rapidly) are criminals,,,,most are decent people who live in these areas. Just that things keep getting worse in the economy and people are getting angry about it.
just sayin’
