Both Marvin Potter (right) and Jamie Curd (left) are charged with the murder of Billy Payne and Billie Jean Hayworth.
MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (The Blaze/AP) — A father who was upset after a Tennessee couple deleted his adult daughter as a friend on Facebook has been charged in the shooting deaths of the couple, authorities said Wednesday.
The victims had complained to police that Marvin‘s Potter’s daughter was harassing them after they deleted her as a friend on the social networking site, Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece said Wednesday.
Potter, 60, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in last week’s slayings of Billy Payne Jr. and his girlfriend, Billie Jean Hayworth. The couple was shot to death in their Mountain City home in the far northeast corner of the state. Their 8-month-old baby was found unharmed in Hayworth’s arms.
“It’s a senseless thing,” the sheriff said.
Watch the local news report:
Authorities have been involved other cases where Potter’s daughter, Jenelle Potter, believed she had been slighted by someone.
Marvin Potter’s friend, Jamie Curd, has also been charged in the killings. Curd, 38, had romantic feelings for Jenelle Potter, 30, the sheriff said.
TriCities.com has more from the sheriff:
Reece said Jenelle Potter has a history of getting angry when people de-friend her on Facebook.
“Apparently, she was on the internet all the time,” Reece said. “That was her life. When she was a friend with someone on Facebook and they removed her, she went ballistic. This is just a senseless thing. That’s no reason to kill people.”
According to court documents, on May 7, 2011, another woman actually took Potter to court. Lindsey Thomas filed a telephone harassment complaint against Potter.
“Jenelle Potter whom I’ve never met has been harassing me for months now,” Thomas said in her affidavit of complaint. “She has called my phone anywhere from 5-20 times a day. I have asked her on more than one occasion to quit calling me, but have had no luck. This all started because I deleted her off my Facebook. She continues to lie and say stuff about me all over her Facebook. I have proof of Phone calls and stuff on Facebook.”
Potter and Curd were arraigned Wednesday. Potter asked for time to hire an attorney while Curd was assigned a public defender who did not immediately return a phone message.
Assistant District Attorney General Matthew Roark said Curd’s initial bond was raised to $1.5 million while Roark agreed to put off a bond hearing for Potter until next week, when he is expected to have an attorney. Potter remains jailed on his initial $200,000 bond.
The victims lived with Billy Payne Sr., who was the last person to see them alive. He told detectives he saw Hayworth get up to feed the baby before he left for work at about 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 31.
The slayings were discovered about five hours later when a former neighbor stopped by to pick up mail the family would save for him.
The younger Payne was found in his bedroom, and Hayworth was found in the baby’s room.

I only friend people I know personally and like. Like being the operative word here. I refuse to “friend” my mother-in-law because she’s always in my business and my family hates her. She’s bossy, always right (in her own mind) and has made comments about what she thinks about my family (which are not nice). I wouldn’t subject the rest of my family to her.

I knew Billie Jean and her family really well, her older sister working with me at a local factory in Boone, NC. I‘m ashamed at these men and that woman’s actions and am horrified for the child. I know the child is in good care now, but it‘ll never have the care it can get from it’s loving mother.

If you want to incriminate yourself as one having little brains by using a warped and warn-out dogma of people based on where they live to humor yourself, go right ahead. There is nothing in the constitution obliging me to save you from making a complete arse of yourself.
Frankly- I think we should all be more concerned for what yet another social network fiasco will do our freedoms and rights. This is like the third negative FB story I have read this week. People shooting people because they were defriended, dad’s shooting kids computers. I for one, applaud the dad’s format and vehicle for teaching his daughter a lesson on respect. BUT- I know that that is not how the left will see it. They will spin it as the reason the government should have more control over the internet. They will use this very situation to trumpet their on-going barrage on American freedoms. But- you guys go right ahead. Hillbillies ARE the bigger issue here.

Posted on March 7, 2012 at 3:32pmWhy anyone would want a Facebook account is totally beyond me. Are you egotistical? Are you a moron who doesn’t know that anyone can get your info from Facebook? You must be. If you really believe Facebook is safe, you are really delusional. There are so many ways to get around their security, it is so pathetic. I am an I.T. person with a background in Programming and I DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT and never have, BECAUSE I KNOW HOW EASY IT IS TO CRACK SOMEONE’S SECURE FACEBOOK PAGE – it is way too easy. Just search on the Internet and they will not only tell you how to do it simply, but will also provide you free tools to do so. Because I know programming, I NEVER USE GOOGLE (nothing Google owns or runs), FACEBOOK, MYSPACE, or any other SOCIAL NETWORK, like Twitter. THE SECURITY ISSUES SURROUNDING THESE ONLINE APPS AND SITE WOULD SHOCK YOU BECAUSE ***THEY ARE NOT SECURE***. They are lying to you. So, if you subscribe to any of these sites, you will get what’s coming to you sooner or later. UNSUBSCRIBE AND GET OFF NOW before our new Dictator Obama lets you know what he knows about you and your family.
MOST AMERICANS ARE SO GULLIBLE. I am warning you now, so don’t say no one told you.
ALSO, if you use those Windows desktop gadgets, BEWARE. As long as they are online on the web, your COMPUTER IS NOT SECURE. Gadgets provide a back door to intruders. THINK PEOPLE THINK.

Posted on April 30, 2012 at 1:33amI agree with ‘I support God’s Israel!’. I am NOT a programmer but I‘ve always had a ’bad’ feeling about Facebook and the other social media. I follow my intuitions and have never had an account. I did not think about ‘this’ reason in particular. It was always more amorphous that that. But this confirms it. I will now NEVER have a Facebook account.
I also have always had the ‘feeling’ that Google was not on the side of the Angels either and have been thinking about ceasing using them too. This confirms that. There are plenty of other good search engines out there. Just goes to show that you don‘t need to be a scholar to ’know’ something… :) In fact it can be seen to severely stunt one’s common sense. Just look at Liberals in the universities and beyond…

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 9:06pmWhat about states where there is no firearms registry requirements? In Missouri, as long as you have no reason to believe someone is ineligible to purchase a firearm, and they sign an affidavit attesting to this fact, you can buy/sell firearms between individual citizens with zero federal/state/local paperwork.
Report Post »Nearly all my rifles and pistols were purchased from other private citizens in this legal way. Honestly, it’s no different than buying a used car from a friend.
You’re only required to go through the NICS background check system if you buy a firearm from a LICENSED DEALER.
In all honesty, if we repealed all firearms laws except the 2nd Amendment, then applied those firearms laws to Automobile purchase/ownership/use, we would save tens of thousands more lives every year.
Also, abortion is the biggest killer in the US right now. More babies dies from abortion last year than EVERYONE from all types of cancer COMBINED. In fact, abortion in 2008 killed 2x as many as all combined types of cancer.
It’s all relative. How can you decry the deaths a few thousands from firearms, while HUNDREDS of thousands of others die from a COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE cause of death, abortion?
Honestly, how do you justify that dissonance?

The social network is getting too full of psychos.
Too many people now days, don’t know how to deal with day to day problems and disappointments, by communicating, working out the problem, and just moving on with their life.
Life is full of disappointments. You do not need to be liked by everyone. Not everyone wants to be your friend. That’s okay. Deal with it without violence, and move on.
This poor little baby has no parents now, because of someone’s temper tantrum, and lack of emotional control, which led to very bad decision, resulting in two murder victims.
