Pastor Calls For National ‘Registry’ to Track Godless Americans

Florida Pastor Proposes National Atheist Registry

Florida Pastor Mike Stahl

Most Americans are familiar with the National Sex Offender Registry, a portal designed to keep Americans informed so that they can protect their children and families. But what about a national registry to track…atheists?

This latter proposal, both controversial and — to some — bizarre, comes from Florida Pastor Mike Stahl. Bloggers and journalists have been buzzing about Stahl’s suggestion that a national database be created to help track non-believers.

Stahl is the self-described pastor of the Church of the Living Water, which apparently exists solely online. While he originally posted his proposal on his personal blog last year, his words are just now beginning to pick up national steam. In describing his views, he wrote:

Brothers and Sisters , I have been seriously considering forming a ( Christian ) grassroots type of organization to be named “The Christian National Registry of Atheists” or something similar . I mean , think about it . There are already National Registrys for convicted sex offenders , ex-convicts , terrorist cells , hate groups like the KKK , skinheads , radical Islamists , etc..

This type of “National Registry” would merely be for information purposes . To inform the public of KNOWN ( i.e., self-admitted) atheists..

Stahl’s main goals in creating the atheist “offender” list would be to “inform” the public, to expose “admitted atheists” and to “begin to witness to them” in an effort to steer them away from their non-belief. He continues:

Now , many (especially the atheists ) , may ask “Why do this , what’s the purpose ?” Duhhh , Mr. Atheist , for the same purpose many States put the names and photos of convicted sex offenders and other ex-felons on the I-Net – to INFORM the public ! I mean , in the City of Miramar , Florida , where I live , the population is approx. 109,000 . My family and I would sure like to know how many of those 109,000 are ADMITTED atheists ! Perhaps we may actually know some . In which case we could begin to witness to them and warn them of the dangers of atheism .

Stahl has obviously drawn the ire of atheists and critics who stand appalled at the fact that he has equated non-believers with radicals, murderers and racists. Law professor Jonathan Turley, dismayed at the prospect, responded with the following:

It is a fascinating glimpse into the mind of intolerance. It is particularly interesting to see Stahl talking about hate groups in the midst of an intolerant proposal like a national registry.

Of course, reactions have been interesting to observe. One blogger makes the assumption that Stahl’s views are mainstream among Christians (a fact many believers would dispute). Hemant Mehta, also known as “The Friendly Atheist,” explains his theories:

You know, there’s a reason so many atheists are afraid of coming out publicly and it’s because Christians like Stahl treat us as targets. I know a lot of Christians want you to think he’s a crazy extremists who doesn’t represent the faith, but most of what he says isn’t unusual — a *lot* of evangelical churches follow some form of his suggestions already; they’re just not as blunt about it.

Like when they teach members how to proselytize to non-Christians. (I wouldn’t be surprised if they had specific atheists in mind during lessons.) There’s no attempt to befriend us or actually understand where we’re coming from — it’s only about converting us at all costs. Just because they don’t have an “official” list of atheists doesn’t mean they’re not acting on an imaginary one.

As a result of the negative response Stahl has received from atheists and their supporters, his blog has been made private. Also, it appears his Facebook page was deleted. Despite these efforts, his words continue to spread.

Judging from his retreat, it looks like he won’t be creating that registry after all.

(h/t Jonathan Turley)

Let’s not pretend. He’s a real Christian, a profoundly devout Christian, a devotee of Christ and a servant of God. Just as extremist Muslims represent all 1 billion members of the Muslim of religion (20% of the world’s population), this man is an iconic Christian, one who represents all of Christians. Because he declares his opinions in the name of the Christian God you have to believe he represents Christians the world over.

If you say he doesn’t speak for all Christians you are a fool. That‘s like saying an Islamic terrorist doesn’t speak for all members of the religion of Islam.

We’re about freedom to practice, and believe me, atheism is just as much a religion as any other. They have the right to not believe what they want to. I don‘t cram Christianity down anyone’s throat, and as long as they don’t try to cram atheism down my throat, I don’t care what they believe, who or where they are.

And i just thank God for the US Constitution, the first amendment of the bill of rights, and YES, the separation of church and state. This man is a prime example of why, in America, pastors, priests and other “religious leaders” have NO legal or civil authority over anyone other than that which is given voluntarily to them by their fellow believers. America is NOT about religion, it’s about FREEDOM of religion. In America all faiths, are equal in the eyes of the law. The Church, any church, can excommunicate me from their ranks, but that is ALL they can do. No pastor, reverend, priest or pope and have me executed or even jailed for my “sins”. In America i can only be prosecuted under the RULE OF LAW. And that is only the law that passes muster under the constitution….God bless America.

A lot of it is probably because the families are to lazy to take their children. What a different world it would be if the parents of the children of the 60′s had paid more attention to them. Correlation doesn‘t prove causality and I’d love to know what variables account for the number of those who stay Christian. Did they control for amount of one-on-one parental time, family devotions, whether there is a dinner hour, how much and what sort of television are they allowed to watch, social networking habits, etc.

I think the number one reason people leave the faith is hypocrisy. They see people teaching one thing and doing another. Parents are notorious for this. If you are not a living example for your kids then good luck getting them to believe anything your trying to teach them.
I once saw a father in a restaurant trying to teach his daughter manners just by telling her to say thank you to the waitress. During the same period he never once said please or thank you to the waitress. Kids want to be just like their parents when they are little. And many of them end up as religious hypocrites just like their parents.
Many religions teach that Christianity is just a belief with absolutely no actions or behavior necessary. So how do you believe in being a good parent by not being one?

“.If more attended (parents and children) there would be fewer atheist”

One of the quickest ways to ensure someone eventually abandons gods is to constantly expose them to the myths and delusions of religion, then watch as they find said myths and delusions incompatible with reality.

It’s so confusing to watch people laud the eventual abandonment of belief in Santa Claus as the sign of a healthy mind, yet go completely bonkers when the same children realize that gods are no more real than the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy.

…..then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for you.

Have at it pal, you might not like the response you get. You see, us realist realize that those that mean us harm will come in many forms, where it be radical muslums, radical liberals, radical Christains, or just the flash mob moving down the street.
Either way, I for one am sitting on my porch, waiting for one of you Godly folks to raise his hand, in violence. I and those that will not be herded will smite you like no God you have ever known.

hey soldier, first let me say thank you for your service. as a bible only non-churchgoing christian (for all the reasons everyone here has posted, and there is a part in the bible that backs me up as a believer who hates denominationalism. thats as much preaching as your gonna hear from me. its your choice to hear it or not and i don’t speak it unless asked about it.) the same notion croossed my mind when i read this insane idea but i couldn’t remember the quote. you are absolutely right. it’s scary to think that this could gain momentum with extremists (yes i acknowledge there are in christianity. you only need to look at history to see the most atrocious examples)

“On the fringe” is an understatement. He has an “online church” no one has ever heard of – who holds him accountible? Who ordained him? Could he even get ordained? He‘s like the two nutballs who thought that bombing the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem on New Year’s Eve 1999 would bring about the return of Christ. Ever since their warped theology hit the news, critics of the faithful tell us that we all believe this and that it shapes our reasons to support Israel (cuckoo)! The blogger sited above is a perfect example of atheist paranoia which takes one nutcase as proof of their worst fears and encourages others to run with it.

Solzhenitsin, not all religions require ordination. i agree with most of what your saying, but you can’t blame atheists for feeling the way they do. the truth is they do get targeted by over zealous christians who refuse to recognize their right not to believe, which action jesus counselled against. i’m very strong in my belief in what the bible teaches but, i‘m constantly bombarded by denominations who believe i must not be saved because i don’t attend church (theirs specifically). this happens with all denominations, and i usually wind up preaching to them in response, using the bible to back my words, of course.

Ya know, anyone can call themselves a pastor and start their own church….any of you….if that is your thing. Doesn’t mean you are one to be taken seriously!!

Remember the story about: Welcome to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Give this person the consideration he deserves……………..given he has a church of ONE!

Would this sham of a Pastor have atheists sow symbols into their clothing also, maybe send them off to a special camp to think and reflect, a quiet place to concentrate, a concentration camp.

This only proves of close to facism and nazism the extreme “christian” right is.

The founders were not stupid men and put a great deal of time into the Constitution. They selected the word “Creator” for a reason. Who created me? Well, technically my parents…. who created them? I can believe in a force of some sort. Somewhere out there, perhaps. Could he be considered a God? Sure. But Gods can be misinterpreted by uninformed people. Maybe aliens created our solar system and our planet, even go as far as planted the seeds of life on this planet. Aliens could be our creator. Guess what though, I don‘t know the answer to this question and I’m not willing to jump into the bandwagon to play on the safe side and avoid hell.

Honestly, what kind of God would do that? Punish you just because you don’t believe in him? Doesn‘t matter how good of a person you are or the good you’ve done in this world, none of it matters. As long as you repent your sins, you’re golden! You’ll be up there in heaven having dinner dates with Jeffrey Dahmer in no time!

soldier (ok maybe one) there actually is a part in the bible that looks after people like what your describing. they are referred to as a law unto themselves, if it is their nature to live as god wants them too, even though they don‘t know and don’t believe. christians rely on grace, but those who follow law (like jews and those naturally good non-believers) aren’t necessarily doomed. those who choose the law must follow it completely. that is a point often misrepresented. i just wanted to clear that up for you and any christian who missed that part.
