Vote: What Should Happen to PA Pastor Who Lied About Being a Navy SEAL?

When a paper has to begin a follow-up story with a correction saying it was duped by someone claiming to be a former Navy SEAL, the first question to come to your mind is probably, how did it get fooled? That’s a valid question. But it soon becomes a secondary one once you realize the person doing the lying is a pastor, and he not only lied to the paper, but he’s also been duping his congregation for years.

On Friday, The Patriot-News decided to feature stories of local Pennsylvania serviceman who served as Navy SEALS. One name reporter Dan Miller kept hearing was Rev. Jim Moats. Moats, pastor of Christian Bible Fellowship Church in Newville, PA, gave Miller an interview, and soon the piece was centered on Moats. That was the beginning of the end.

Here’s part of what Miller wrote for Saturday’s paper. It’s detailed, and convincing:

When he learned of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, the Rev. Jim Moats almost got out his old Navy SEAL flag to run up the pole in front of his home in Newville. Moats was a Navy SEAL four decades ago during the war in Vietnam.

Now 59, Moats was a brash athletic 19-year-old from a military family in northern Virginia, who enlisted in 1970.

An expert swimmer and high school lifeguard, Moats was put on the road to becoming a SEAL by a commander who asked him to sign up for one of the underwater demolition teams.

Navy SEALs – the acronym refers to elite teams trained to fight anywhere on sea, air and land – emerged from President John F. Kennedy’s speech about putting a man on the moon, in which JFK also pledged to expand the nation’s special operations capability.

Moats underwent SEAL training at Little Creek Amphibious Base in Virginia Beach in summer 1971.

Instructors hit SEALs and goaded them to quit. He was subjected to waterboarding, because the Navy knew that’s what the Vietnamese did to SEALs and air crew members who were captured.

SEALs were kept going for days with little sleep. The instructors would lie, promising sleep or a break, but when the time came it wouldn’t happen.

Moats grew accustomed to the physical part because he was in good shape. The mental barrages were more grueling. “I had almost no discipline.

I was as wild as they came. That was my nemesis,” Moats said. “They weren’t looking for a guy who brags to everyone he is a SEAL. They wanted somebody who was ready but had an inner confi-dence and didn’t have a braggadocio attitude.” In August 1971, Moats got into a fight in a club. He went from Navy elite to dishwashing as part of a mandated “attitude adjustment.” Moats soon after rededicated his life to God.

Soon after, however, readers started noticing something fishy. According to a retraction published by the paper’s editors, numerous people wrote in to say that Moats’s story was false. One such reader was Don Shipley, a former SEAL who apparently keeps records of former SEALs for the Navy:

Moats was never a SEAL and never had set foot in Vietnam, Shipley said. The information can be verified through a Freedom of Information Act request from the Naval Special Warfare Command in San Diego, he said.

Shipley called Moats on Saturday night to confront him about the issue.

“We deal with these guys all the time, especially the clergy. It’s amazing how many of the clergy are involved in those lies to build that flock up,” Shipley said.

Shipley said Moats’ story about being re-assigned to kitchen duty and about being waterboarded were lifted from the Steven Seagal movie “Under Siege,” while his reference to being hit by SEAL instructors was vintage “GI Jane.”

Moats had a plaque on his office wall that honors SEALs and other Navy special-operations units. Moats said his two sons, who were in the Army and served in Iraq together, made the plaque for him.

The paper then followed-up. Sure enough, Moats confessed. He also explained the Genesis of the lie:

Moats’ name doesn’t appear on the plaque, but when church members got the impression from it that Moats had been a SEAL, Moats didn’t deny it. From there, the word spread, and Moats did nothing to correct the record.

“I have allowed people to assume that, and I have not corrected it. Probably at this church for the last five years do people assume that,” Moats said.

Moats said his wife and his two sons, Jamie and Jonathan, knew that he was never a SEAL. Moats said one of his sons called him after seeing the published story to ask why he would tell the world he was a SEAL when he wasn’t.

“I bring a shame and a reproach upon the name of Christ, I bring a shame and a reproach upon my church, and I bring a shame and a reproach upon my family,” Moats told the paper.

Shipley, however, has his own thoughts: “He has mental problems, plain and simple. His wife and friends and flock believe it, and he starts believing it himself. That is not an excuse. The pastor is very aware of what he did.”

    I thought so.

Let us clean the trash out of our own house before we look at other peoples houses. How many times did Shipley tell a lie ? What is his mental state ? Hmm Oh, wait a minute, Moats wa a Christian, that’s it, so he supposed to be immune from lying, right ?

Maybe he thought he’d get more tithes and offerings in the plate. I would not be surprised that he is also teaching false doctrines that so many pew warmers are willing to receive without question like the pre trib rapture and doctrine of the trinity and tithing. An easy way to find out if a man is truly of the truth is ask them what name they baptise in and if they teach tithing. It is that simple. Satan is the father of liars. We can forgive him but I seriously doubt if he is ordained by the Lord to be a servant of God. The greatest is to be the servant.

one of the ten commandments ““ thy shalt not lie ”” ops he is in big trouble with the big man, a preacher who lies, wow, so all that bible thumping he done for years is in doubt, you know things are getting bad when preachers lie and continue to lie . lord please forgive him, and please help and guide the church back to you. there are two professions you look up to a police officer and a preacher, and now a days they are more and more of them who have taken advantage of their profession. for ever one bad one there are hundreds more good ones, but it is the bad ones people remember, and that is the sad part, he has not only hurt his family, but his church family, and the church itself, and the profession also. so i wish someone would ask him if he ever thought about the consequences of a little lie, that turned out to big huge.

    An analogy:

A preacher woke up one Sunday to find it was a fantastic spring day. The sun was warm, and the birds were singing. He decided that instead of going to church, he was going golfing. So he called in sick and headed out to the course.

He was playing very well and having a great time. Then he came to a dreaded par-4 hole. He hit the ball in a decent drive that started to fall well-short of the green.

Something amazing happened, however. A wind came up and blew the ball forward. The ball sailed over water traps and bounced around sand traps.

Finally the ball made it to the green. It rolled past the hole and then gently back around. For a second it teetered on the edge of the hole. Then it fell right in.

The preacher was stunned. He made a hole-in-one on a par-4! He started jumping up and down in excitement.

Up in heaven, an angel was watching this. The angel turned to God and said, “I don’t get it. He skips church to go golfing, and you gave him an amazing hole in one.”

God replied to the angel with a smile, “Who’s he going to tell?”

You forgot politicians…,unless you included them with Kings.
I have observed that the Pulpit is a good place for wannabe politicians. You get to hold court and get your EGO stroked.
It has also been my observation that unlike politicians…,the clergy, caught in their lies, do feel shame. I’m not excusing…,just saying.
I was reminded once again of the LIE that is Hillary Rodham Clinton. Remember…., among her myriad of whoppers, the one about taking enemy fire as she debarked her Govt. Helicopter along with then teenage daughter Chelsea?! UGH! HER lies secured HER a position as Secretary of State!
John Kerry shamelessly told lies about his fellow soldiers when he came back from Vietnam. It got him his Senate seat where he continues to do damage to the nation. The list of lying politicians who are rewarded for their prevarications goes on and on ad infinitum.

I guess what I’m trying to say is…at least this Ass did not try to get to Washington. We have enough of his ilk there already.

Yup. Being a pastor does not make a perfect man, the proof being all the pastors who’ve fallen from Grace over the years. But, God does forgive, if they are sincere in asking for forgiveness and they may become even greater workers for the Kingdom, kinda like Paul (Saul) who devoted his life to working for the gospel after his sins.

This “pastor” has missed the point of being a Christian. A real man of God needs to be truthful, especially as to teaching spiritual things. When he yields to lies, he is following, not God, but the devil himself.

John 8:42; Jesus said to them: “If God were YOUR Father, YOU would love me, for from God I came forth and am here. Neither have I come of my own initiative at all, but that One sent me forth. 43 Why is it YOU do not know what I am speaking? Because YOU cannot listen to my word. 44 YOU are from YOUR father the Devil, and YOU wish to do the desires of YOUR father. That one was a manslayer when he began, and he did not stand fast in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks according to his own disposition, because he is a liar and the father of [the lie]. 45 Because I, on the other hand, tell the truth, YOU do not believe me. 46 Who of YOU convicts me of sin? If I speak truth, why is it YOU do not believe me? 47 He that is from God listens to the sayings of God. This is why YOU do not listen, because YOU are not from God.”

The article does not dive deep enough into if he received any compensation from anyone for portraying a member of the armed services. Portraying anyone from Private to Navy seal and receiving compensation is a crime, and you see more and more of it these days.

If he has confessed his sin then he is forgiven in my eyes. If he is a good man of God who lost his way with a foolish mistake there is no reason to condemn him. It’s up to the Lord to judge him.

In the Bible a prophet also had the same problem and told a HUGE lie. God didn’t punish this man and strip him of his rights. He told them for he is a man of God in spite of his sin. ———————-
      ACTS 10:34-48

The prophet was under the law, we are under Grace. I could not agree more that if he truly repents, he will be forgiven, as long as he (the “preacher”) has not blasphemed, but without the Spirit sin will creep back in before long. I hope for the best for his soul, this time though he should go beyond getting forgiveness and pray to Jesus that the reason for sin in his heart would be removed, then Jesus will apply His blood spiritually and the unclean spirit will have to move, Jesus then will pray to the Father and He will send the Holy Ghost to seal the vessel until the day of redemption. Simple, Simple, Simple but because of the simplicity of Salvation many are confounded

Bearfoot why do you quote the old testament, are you not aware we are not under the law? If you doubt my first assertion of you quoting John as the old testament, please look up using google this quote for the verse in Hebrews 9:, ” 16For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.” Your position is self righteous, and your statement is of a religious man not one who understands salvation and the forgiveness of sins. You should be quoting Ephesians not John I’d suggest chapter 2, read it and understand it.

Why is this news? I didnt see any articles asking what should the Rabbis do in NJ which were caught harvesting organs a few months back? Or the one on dateline last year trying to pick up little boys?
Why is it that all we hear about in the Media (news and hollywood) is Protestant adultery and Catholic boy love? If one didn‘t know any better they’d think that the Rabbis were beyond reproach.

If I had a dollar for every person that I ever met that told me they were a former Navy SEAL, served in Vietnam, and now helped train SEAL teams from time to time…We wouldn’t need Social Security, period. These people usually watch every movie they can get their hands on, mimic their hand signals, and brag a lot. In my lifetime, I have met only one true former Navy SEAL. He was detached, hardly ever spoke a word, and kept to himself. His entire deportment showed deeply ingrained disciplines that maximized his every step. You can’t fake this type of discipline. Shame on anyone that claims to be a former Navy SEAL and has no DD214 to back it up. The only place you deserve a Trident is one sticking in your buttock.

God has special punishment in store for those leaders that will manipulate their flock, especially for money or their ego.

      taskmaster78,

I have read your comment but I do not understand your position.
I am pretty sure the account starting in John 8:42 is in the Greek Scriptures (new testament), not in the “old testament”.
Also the words in those verses are not mine, they are the message spoken by our Lord Jesus. So if you have a problem, considering them to be self righteous, take it up with Jesus Christ.

Delusions of grandeur = “Grandiose delusions or delusions of grandeur are principally a subtype of delusional disorder but could possibly feature as a symptom of schizophrenia, etc, etc…”

@ savingtherepublic. Unfortunately, a law called the “Stolen Valor Act” where it was a Federal crime to impersonate military rank, insignia or awards was recently struck down as Unconstitutional. A new law is working its way through Congress.

There is nothing more vile in the eyes of veterans and servicemen and women then these “pretenders.” A little known fact is that over 9,000,000 men claimed to be Vietnam veterans. Sadly, today there are fewer then 800,000 of us left (out of 2.7 million that actually were there). This will give you some idea how big of a problem this is.

Anyone involved in veteran rights is well aware of these wannabees – the fake Seals, Special Forces, Delta Force, Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Purple Heart and just plain old, I was in the military. This means more than someone parading around, claiming they are something they are not. This is about preserving the honor of the military and recognizing the great sacrifices they have made on behalf of our freedom.

silver lining: humiliation is a pathway to humility if he will allow God to do His work. A big lesson can be learned that might make him more fit for the pulpit EVENTUALLY. He needs to step down for awhile would be my suggestion.
