Pastor Delivers Controversial NASCAR Prayer: Thanks God for ‘Smokin’ Hot Wife’

A Tennessee pastor shocked more than a few spectators on Saturday during the NASCAR Federated Auto Parts 300 Nationwide series race. Why? Not only did he thank God for “Dodges” and “Toyotas” during the pre-race prayer, but he made sure to thank the Almighty for his “smokin’ hot wife.”
Reuters recounts the epic invocation by Pastor Joe Nelms of Family Baptist Church in Gladeville, Tenn:
He thanked God for such things as “these mighty machines that you’ve brought before us,” going on to cite the wonders of Dodges and Toyotas and Fords.
Prayerful thanks then were directed to, among other things,
“Sunoco Racing Fuel and Goodyear tires that bring performance and power to the track.”
But it was when he got to his family that he had fans and drivers unsuccessfully holding back laughter.
“Lord I want to thank you for my smokin’ hot wife tonight, Lisa, my two children, Eli and Emma, or as we like to call them the Little E’s.”
The prayer was quickly captured by many and posted on YouTube, and shows several breaking out in laughter during the normally serious ritual:
The prayer is reminiscent of one given during the comedy movie “Talladega Nights” (which centers around NASCAR racing) starring Will Ferrell:
But as HuffPo points out, Nelms is no stranger to epic, pre-race prayers. The outlet posted two other videos of past prayers that seem to be a warm-up to his instantly infamous one on Saturday:
Nelms was unavailable to comment about his latest invocation to Reuters.
But while some may find Nelms’s prayer irreverent, at least one person liked it, race winner Carl Edwards.
“I turned to Jack (Roush) after that. I said, ‘If anything happens, I want him to be at my funeral,’” Edwards said according to the Christian Post. “That was one of the best invocations I have ever heard.”
What do you think?

The issue is the irreverence toward our God and Creator that was shown by this ‘pastor’.
Really how could a man professing allegiance with God, a pastor say a prayer at a NASCAR event in the first place? Wrong place, wrong time, wrong event. Prayers to the Almighty should be private, not public.

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 4:00pmRoseblood, not only was your comment idiotic, but you seem to not understand the difference between loose and lose.
Everything has its proper time and place. Levity is great, principally because we should not take ourselves or our cares that seriously. But flippancy is bad when dealing with truly serious and holy things. God is not silly, and prayers to him should not be silly. I’m glad this pastor thinks his wife is hot, but I wouldn’t want him making love to her in the pulpit nor do I want him making comical sexual references about her when praying to the Lord of heaven.
Everyone who says that God has a sense of humor; I would love to know your scriptural basis for that so that we might know what the parameters and purposes of that humor are. God says that he is not mocked, so where does that fit in?
Personally I think God’s sense of humor lies in laughing at us. Laughing at him alweays seems to be a characteristic that he discourages.

What you describe is a ruler, not a creator, in my opinion. Rulers cannot tolerate having flaws pointed out, while creators embrace those flaw in themselves.
And allow me another translation of that quote: “I tell you with certainty, whatever you prohibit on earth will have been prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will have been permitted in heaven.” I know the difference between lose and loosed, but apparently scholars disagree with the translation.

Report Post »Would you say a public prayer to atheists, homosexuals, or muslims, those who do not share your understanding of the true God? At a NASCAR event, the audience could contain people of that sort and they would not appreciate your prayer. So, this is a part of the issue as I see it, because it is the wrong place, and as such does not guarantee a reverential prayer.

Sure showing your Christian spirit again today. Remember we speak what’s in the Heart. You sound angry an awful lot. I hope things get better for you.
@RoseBlood
The “one book” is the only book and God is real. Gratefully we are allowed to believe as we choose, as the Creator doesn’t force you to believe in Him. A ruler would though. I do hope you search for God and come to find him. If I can ever help you do so please let me know. God is good.
I find that anyone looking to pray in front of everyone else isn’t praying for the right motives usually. The Bible tells us in Luke the motives of why men seek to pray in Public gatherings.
The man can speak as he wishes. My faith finds it distasteful and not a good practice.

Report Post »People here talk as if your book dictates to them what must be done to worship god. His people have made him a ruler by their own interpretation. The Bible is not one book, as it is made up of many books and stories; and I do not believe we have seen even half of what was written at the time.
I appreciate your offer to find god, but I have already found the creators and worship them appropriately with words, music, art, critical thinking, and humor.
Islesfordian
Posted on July 25, 2011 at 5:02pmbearfoot, a public prayer is an opportunity to witness to others who God is, but also to draw people’s hearts to God despite their level of spiritual awareness. Yes there would be atheists there, but there often is in the church, many of them calling themselves believers. That is what is so offensive about this“prayer”. He was yucking it up and celebrating the fun they were going to have rather than drawing them to remember that there is more important things than ephemeral fun.
Many of those here celebrating clowning around with prayer should take note that we are in the state we are as a country both politically and spiritually, and the two are related, because we have forgotten to take seriously the important things. We have treated God as benevolent but soft hearted grandfather, expecting him to bless whatever pleases us, and we have treated the Constitution without the respect it deserves and made it a toy.
Laughter is a good thing, in its place. Many of you don’t seem to know that things have their place. Why don’t you go to a wedding or a funeral and let a loud fart escape in the pew during the wedding vows or the eulogy, then explain that God has a sense of humor.

@RoseBlood
One book composed of several books. Believe as you choose, luckily we can. The God, the God of the Bible, forces no one to worship him. There is no ruler on Earth forcing one to believe. Yes many humans on Earth believe they should try and force such belief and in doing so become what they were fighting. Jesus clearly tells us we can choose the wide path or the narrow path like him. Clearly there is a choice and each will live with the consequences of that choice forever. Yes The Bible does demonstrate to those believing how to worship. Offer always stands in help finding the one true God and Creator of all. Remember, life is just the initiation to the after life! I hope your days great.

But if it makes you feel better by calling me angry so you don’t have to come up with logical points, knock yourself out (not literally, of course). But you might not be aware that the tactic of commenting about someone’s emotional state as a way to dismiss his argument is a trick that Freud made popular. And all the progressives have adopted it as well, so you’re in good company, I guess. Well, not so much good but….
Freud also had a theory called “transference”, which is when one person accuse another of doing what he really does. I don’t know, but when you write stuff like this:
“When you have God, you fear him and that is it. A Muslim is a non believer as a Jew is a non believer as an atheist is a non believer. All are against Christ Jesus. Have a great day.”
some might call that angry. I don’t, not at all. But i think your emotional state is irrelevant. i just think you are wrong to dismiss the idea that the Jews holding to the Law makes them substantially better than atheists and Muslims.

Nice subtle aka deceptive way of saying I‘m Progressive because I don’t believe as you. Name calling is anger. You calling me a Progressive instead of debating is a tactic of the group you called me, isn’t it? Regardless I was referring to you calling someone an “Idiot”, “Progressive”, etc just because they don’t believe as you. I simply and lovingly was trying to tell you it hurts the cause and message you proclaim to bring. The message of God.
Transference. Are you a practicer? I’m rubber, your glue. Ready to debate like Christian adults now and stop distracting???
Did you find where it says we should pray in Public with nonbelievers?
If I never heard of God and you come along and begin praying openly for me I’d think you were crazy and would put my guard up against you. Now if I attended Church, I’m obviously going to learn of God, I would learn what prayer is and how to do so if I wished.
If that is anger, the Bible is angry because a non-believer is anyone, again anyone, who does not accept Jesus Christ. What Law does modern Judaism keep? And can you provide scripture for your opinion?

I didn’t realize there was a vacancy in the HS…Are you judging a brother’s heart? What’s next, are you going to accuse John the Baptist of an anger problem….?
@ Dan & Foot. I think you’re both right. Jesus warned about those praying in public (as Okie eluded to), as they just wish to be heard & we are cautioned not to cast pearls among swine. At the same time it can be a good thing when there is a certain corporate reverence among a nation or group who recognizes the Almighty God – even if all that are present are not of the faithful. Nineveh comes to mind as well as our own nations humble beginnings. However you can usually judge by the worlds reaction to the prayer, which is which. In this case it is a no brainer (which I think you both agree).
@ RoseB
“I am so glad I don’t believe in this being you call god…Rulers cannot tolerate having flaws pointed out, while creators embrace those flaw in themselves.”
Ummm He’s both (Creator & Supreme Ruler). He created all things and Him all things exist, & you choosing not to believe Him or in Him, doesn’t make Him or the truth null. Second, He has no flaws.
What flaws do you have that you embrace? What worlds do you hold together by your very word?
Your own words convict you “…all that has been created”. So who did this? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name, If you know?

Posted on July 26, 2011 at 3:33am“If I said “you think like an idiot” would you consider that anger? I would.”
Why in the world would you think you could know the emotional state of a statement like that,Okie. If a person really is speaking like a fool how is pointing out the foolishness an action only capable through anger? If I said to Obama, “you think like a Marxist”, would that be an angry statement?
The thing about transference is, if I say something that makes someone else angry, in his anger he sees ME as being angry too, because anger is the way he is relating to the controversy. He assumes I must be angry to think what I said because he is angry hearing it. I might be angry when I say that Obama is a marxist. But I might not be angry. I could say it with sadness, or with no emotional passion at all, simply as a sober reflection of his political instincts.
Now it isn’t relevant whether it is anger or simple misunderstanding that caused you to misread my comment. The fact is that you did. I nowhere called you a progressive. I guess you admit as much when you said I did so sublty and deceptively. I clearly went no farther than labling the tactic of arguing about one‘s opponent’s emotional state as a progressive one. You can use progressive tools without being a progressive, but I think it’s legitimate to question how effective an opponent of progressivism you can be while using their tools.

In this day and age when my God and Lord Jesus are banned almost e-were we need stuff like this!
My heart has been soooooo heavy lately this helped!

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 5:56pmFavored, isn’t the purpose of a pastor and a prayer not to reflect the event where it is made but rather the God to whom it is made? Shouldn’t a prayer offer a contrast to the worldly fun being had? There is nothing wrong in fun, but there are far more important things. And in our age where we want to be entertained all the time shouldn’t a prayer at such an entertainment seek to carve out a space where we focus on God and not just on having a good time, just to balance things out at least? Prayer doesn’t belong to NASCAR. It belongs to God. People who don‘t want to stop the party just for a little prayer aren’t the people who will restore the nation.
Once upon a time, when men wore hats, they would take their hats off and bow their heads when they prayed. What kill joys, huh? Aren‘t we all glad we’re not like THOSE generations.

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 6:38pmFortunately God has told people like Blacktooth how we should pray. Now Blacktooth can teach the rest of us the proper way. It’s great that there are people out there who know exactly what God wants us to do, which religion to join, what sect . . . . and its nice they are willing to share their knowledge with the rest of us. Please keep telling everyone around you what God wants those who know – since you know (and your group knows). As we learn from you, the rest of us will just do our best.

Who I am is not important. I am no one special in any way. I state my opinion here just like everyone else.
I do shape my comments based on my education of God’s Word, the Bible and I try to give references when needed and if no references are stated, it is assumed you already have sufficient knowledge to understand what I am saying. Sometimes I will ask a question without giving a answer to solicit thought and further comment on the subject at hand.

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 2:50pmI am on the fence about this one. One one hand, I know God has a sense of humor. He could appreciate lightening up a moment that may otherwise be full of anxiety. (No, I have never been to a Nascar race but I would think some would be nervous, like the wives.)
But on the other hand, it was all jest and no seriousness. You cannot consider that an actual prayer. Joking around cannot be a substitute for actual communication with God.
Did the pastor pray a true prayer after the fake one? If so, then I don’t see any harm.

Any communication with your god is good communication. A prayer should be as unique as the person saying it.

“If God didn‘t like humor then he wouldn’t have given it to us.”
I already addressed that. And besides, there is a time and place for everything. Just because we have a sense of humor doesn’t meant that we should go to a funeral and tell jokes or pull pranks. I know my example is an extreme, but fact is I didn‘t feel any sense of blessing by this pastor’s words.

“What would be an ‘actual prayer’? Something with a bunch of ‘thanketh thee’ and ‘humble thou’?”
Are you saying that there is nothing in between? Pastor Joe was spoofing the comedy Talladega Nights. It was meant to get a laugh. I can appreciate that. But if you are there to give an invocation, then be sincere.
“Any communication with your god is good communication. A prayer should be as unique as the person saying it.”
Absolutely. But he was speaking as a representative of the group before him. It wasn’t a personal one-on-one with God. I have a term of endearment I use when speaking quietly with Him. I would not use it when giving a blessing publicly.
I believe it was all for show and not heartfelt. Going for the reaction of the people and not God’s favor.

Report Post »It seems he may have represented the group before him fairly well, in a way that connected to them. I know that the chaplain on my last ship had a great line in his prayer blessing our departure from port: “… and for those Sailors new to the open seas, may God toss a bucket your way when you most need it.” Humorous with a message of protection, and directly appealing to the audience of the prayer.

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 3:57pmCan’t help but think more people heard and are still hearing about this conversation with God. And, at least a few are thinking who might not otherwise and thus step one in the learning process…has to be a good thing The Lord knows Pastor Nrims heart and if he is sincere or if he is edifing or drawing attention to himself that he might be thought of more highly than deserved. While I like what he thinks of his wife mine just told me I’d better not say that sort of thing ’bout her in public I won’t! Sure wish I could find a “spellcheck feathure’

“… and for those Sailors new to the open seas, may God toss a bucket your way when you most need it.”
I actually love that. It gets the point across in a light-hearted framing of words, and fits the description of what I was referring to in my original post.
The difference between that of the chaplain and that of Pastor Joe is that the chaplain’s heart was his own guide. Pastor Joe took Ricky Bobby’s words and replaced them with ones that fit the occasion. Again, for the chuckles.

“Can’t help but think more people heard and are still hearing about this conversation with God. And, at least a few are thinking who might not otherwise and thus step one in the learning process…has to be a good thing ”
It may bring some to the realization that talking with God doesn’t have to be in total seriousness. And yes, that would be a good thing. But I also think that those who are not used to prayer would see Pastor Joe’s ramblings as an advertisement for cars, tires and the like.
I really didn’t want to argue about this. I don’t find it that important, just distasteful and irreverent. So I guess I have made up my mind and jumped off the top of the fence into the ‘this was wrong’ camp.
Thanks, you three, for helping me sift through and make up my mind! :)

Toyota, Dodge, Ford employ hundreds of thousands of people and allow them to make house payments and feed their families. A wise man once said the greatest blessing from God is to be able to enjoy your work and your lot in life. And to enjoy your smokin hot wife in the days of your youth.

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 3:12pmNot to be TOO much of a downer, but it sure seems like a lot of folks here claim to know the mind of God. What must that be like? Is the only way you know God has a sense of humor because you see it in the mirror every morning? God is holy. He may have a sense of humor, He may not. I‘m going to go with the whole not taking the Lord’s name in vain side, until He tells me different to my face.

That’s not being a downer, that’s being a jerk. Why did you feel the need to insult me? You don’t even know me.
I don’t claim to know the mind of God except what he tells us all about himself in scripture. Yes, we are to fear God and keep his commands. Absolutely God is awesome and praiseworthy. But scripture reveals a joyful side of the Lord as well.
