Pastor Rick Warren Cancels Obama Romney Civil Forum Because Candidates Are Too Uncivil

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Pastor Rick Warren says he’s canceled plans for a “civil forum” featuring the presidential candidates because their campaign is so uncivil.

Neither the Obama campaign nor the Romney campaign says their candidate had committed to appearing at the forum at Warren’s Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., near Los Angeles. However Warren said that both candidates had indicated they were interested and the church had started traffic and security planning. The forum had been planned for this week.

In an interview published Wednesday by the Orange County Register, Warren said the forum’s goal was to promote civility and personal respect between people with major differences. He said that‘s not been the climate of the presidential campaign and that he doesn’t expect that to change.

“We created the civil forums to promote civility and personal respect between people with major differences,” Warren told the paper. “The forums are meant to be a place where people of goodwill can seriously disagree on significant issues without being disagreeable or resorting to personal attack and name-calling. But that is not the climate of today’s campaign. I’ve never seen more irresponsible personal attacks, mean-spirited slander, and flat-out dishonest attack ads, and I don’t expect that tone to change before the election.”

“It would be hypocritical to pretend civility for one evening only to have the name-calling return the next day,” he added.

But that isn’t the only reason. In a question-and-answer format published on the Register’s site, Warren reveals there’s another larger issue that led to the cancellation [emphasis added]:

Q. You said you canceled the presidential civil forum because of the negativity and a larger issue. What is that?

A. It is the crumbling of our constitution’s first guaranteed freedom: the freedom of religion. This issue is more significant and has far greater implications for America’s future. People have forgotten that America was founded by people who came here to escape religious persecution. Freedom of religion is the first freedom mentioned in the Bill of Rights – before freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to assemble, and every other freedom.

And yet today, at the city, the state, and the federal levels, government bureaucrats are daily trying to limit that freedom, impose restrictions, and stifle expressions of faith on campuses, in hospitals, and in businesses. There are widespread attempts to redefine the First Amendment to simply mean “You are free to believe anything at your place of worship but you are not free to practice your conscience elsewhere.”

The constitution doesn’t just guarantee your freedom to worship; it guarantees you freedom from government intervention in you daily living out what you believe. That‘s why we’ve chosen to host a civil forum on religious freedom in September instead of the presidential forum. It’s a fight for the constitution, not a personality.

Warren held a candidate forum in 2008 with Obama and Republican John McCain.

      Freedom of Religion!

At first, I skimmed the article with disappointment, going straight for the comment section for reading. I was ready to be very negative toward Warren and prepared to call him a “coward”. I was annoyed because regardless of my opinion of mega-church, I wanted somebody other than leftie journalists to moderate a debate. Well, I felt that old, familiar check in my spirit to skim again! Yikes, I am wrong, again, yes, I said wrong:(

Apparently, Warren is actually usng his platform to correct Obama’ first on the civility, and more importantly…..religious freedom!

Please see it! Warren is boycotting Obama based on policies effecting religious freedom and civility. He is so thoroughly disappointed in the artificial color and sweetners of the “koolaid”, not going to allow it in his church!

I am not sure if he has issues with Romney or Ryan, I guess it will be a wait, listen, and see. Here it could be the old anti-mormon and anti-catholic protestant prejudice, but again he says he is doing Freedom of Religion conference..so, I suppose not!

Sorry, for repeating myself, I want my comment readand pg 2 takes patience?

      Click and paste from article:

“Q. What do you think are the candidates’ views of religious freedom?

      A. President Obama’s policies clearly show what he values and I have told him that I adamantly disagree with those particular policies. I have not talked about this issue with Governor Romney, but I would imagine that as a Mormon he’d obviously understand the importance of protecting all religions against persecution, and ensuring people’s rights to practice their conscience without government intervention.”

He invited a Leading Catholic, so, R/R faith is not his issue.

Yup, HE IS TAKING A STAND AGAINST O’anti-christ’s anti-civil actions and anti-religious freedoms.!

      Come on Blaze readers,

we should be supporting Warren’s actions, being similiar to Daniel refusing to bow or stop praying! Just wait to see the IRS, going after the taxes of Warren and several church leaders or contributers. Watch and see for a scandle to be revealed somewhere to cause a church split or embarrassment. Hold on Warren, u POed the devil, and persecution is coming.

Perhaps, we should be praying instead of joining the “crucify” Warren and his church crowd.

      Sorry, again?

May God protect those who take a stand for righteousness in these times of great lies, deceptions, perversions, and violent language. May He strengthen those standing in the gap for the principals and constitution our founders gleaned from their faith through the Holy Scriptures May He shine His great light to awaken those who have fallen asleep! May He reveal and deliver us from all evil. And may He restore us to truly be a Christian nation (entire Bible), friend of Israel, and bright City on the hill.

      In Jesus Name,
      Amen

Thank you for joining me, traveling through my thought process to this conclusion: it is time to get united, “one nation under God”.

Anyone with common sense would realize that a person such as Warren who puts himself “out there,” is full of himself. No humility. Think about it, all my money goes on the bet that Warren voted for Obama and disgruntled with himself for making such an enormous mistake, so covers it by saying there is too much negativity. Warren, as Billy Graham, humbly admitted years ago during the Nixon admin., got caught up in the rarified air of the political scene. Warren hasn’t the marbles—isn’t humble enough to admit he was suckered in to vote for Obama. Warren’s touchy feely message just turned and popped him in his socket is all and Warren will not subject himself to a remindear of his foolishness. The truth has no agenda.

His book The Purpose Driven Lie, is full of anti Chirtian teachings, Warren teaches to NOT believe in end times prophecies, as taught by our LORD and SAVIOUR, Christ Jesus Himself. Jesus says, in the End times there will be MANY false teachers, with subtle, lying tongues, speaking doctrines of demons, just as there were during HIS time on earth. Warren is part of the Laodician church, as John outlines in Revelation 3. I urge ALL who seek the truth to do the research. The devil, and his minions are VERY crafty. Warren is but another.

Canceling was the right thing to do. Four years ago Warren called obama “a patriot”. Warren held the best debate of the season back then, but he gave cover for obama when he shouldn’t have. He went too far, abandoning truth in trying to be America’s moderator. Now he sees that he can’t pull that one off again, with the obama campaign’s execrable lies and smears, and with Romney not rolling over in the face of it.

CO PATRIOTS: Disagreement is fine … however, the Spirit took me on a journey one time through the internet. For two weeks I spent hundreds of hours listening and watching. ( I will keep it brief) it was like walking a trail. We know how one site leads to another to another … I got into some ( many) ministry sites and there was much stone throwing from one to another about one another. It was sad and pathetic how “ His people” were behaving. I know this grieved the Holy Spirit. Often on this site scripture is used as bricks …. this is not as the LORD intended. We are called to be discerning …I agree … my point and I stand by it, is that we shold not listen to what somebody says about somebody and their purpose for their statement. That is not discernment. I asked a Pastor one time ( was have problems with through a common program) what causes disagreements between people. He responded by saying mis-understanding … not understanding the intent or HEART. I never told him why I went to him. I was checking myself. I do not believe he dug deep enough for if he had he would have found pride to be the root of the issue. I have learned not to listen to what OTHERS say. This is not wise. If I wish to know what a person means I ASK THEM.

I can see from far away whether or not it is a fruit tree for sure but I cannot deem it’s spoiled without sampling. I get that. What you seem to not accept is that folks have sampled Warren and found him spoiled.

I know MANY people of faith that have a jaded eye with respect to “mega” churches in general. The very idea puts them off. Me, I try to listen to the message and decide if it’s for me or not.

      Most are not.

Many in an effort to attract as large an audience as possible leave out or gloss over things some folks find “uncomfortable”. Some delve into the political arena. Some carry the tone of the opinions of the pastor rather than the teachings from The Word.

Is Warren right or wrong? Osteen? Robertson and Graham?

I don’t know or frankly care how you decide for you. I do care how I decide for me.

I have to agree wtih many of you that have spoken out about Rick Warren, it is true living in California too long does something to the brain. It wasn’t for him to decide civility, have the forum and let the people decide. This is why politics and religion do not go together. If a person is raised with ethics and values of doing the right thing all should go well, but many argue what is the right thing. I grew up hearing things like“Actions speak louder than words”.

Rick Warren is a classic example of why the church should stay clear of politics. He is a pragmatic compromiser who sells books and makes religious customers rather than disciple of Christ.

While I am no fan of Rick Warren, I disagree that Christians/chruch should steer clear of politics. We should be engaged in all aspects of society if we are to be the salt and light we are called to be. The German church tried to steer clear of politics and they ended up with Nazi Germany. We should be engaged in the governing and direction of this country, in fact, I think we as the church will give an account for not being more involved. Thank you…

“Rick Warren is a classic example of why the church should stay clear of politics.”

You really don’t know American history very well. Let me help.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu-n1vTpCRQ

It is BECAUSE the church sent leadership to form our government into the civil society, and worked with the huge minority of deists, that we have the greatest country in the world.

Secondly, your ignorant comment: “He is a pragmatic compromiser who sells books and makes religious customers rather than disciple of Christ.”

You also show your ignorance of the “Celebrate Recovery” ministry which has freed hundreds of thousands of people from the addictions of substance. This comes from Saddleback and has spread all over the country.

Rick Warren also does not take a salary at Saddleback. 2005 Warren returned his 25 years of salary to the church and discontinued taking a salary. He says he and his wife became “reverse tithers”, giving away 90% of their income and living off 10%.

You people spend too much time running down good people. THE VERY REASON why Warren cancelled this event… people like YOU.

It is the electorate that is engaged, angry and ready to demonstrate in Nov.
It is Obama and his ideology, and lack of leadership, that is not only uncivil but crimInal.

Agree with his assessment of the political climate. I have NEVER seen such negative nastiness as the Democrat Character Assassination Squad has been spewing through their Left-leaning media since the advent of the Obama Administration. From what I‘ve read about Alinsky’s Rules For Radicals, that is the source of this bile and smear technique. Apparently attacking capitalism directly is not acceptable, so the Democrats have attacked bankers, CEOs, Wall Street, and the ” rich.” Personal and divisive attacks against fellow Americans, the likes of which I have never witnessed in previous elections. This election boils down to a battle between capitalism and ” anti-capitalism.” Between America as we’ve known it and the America of “ redistribution ” and so-called “social justice ” of Barack Obama and his international Far Left cronies. JFK must be twirling. Nobama 2012 No Far Left Democrats 2012

I agree with your premise about dividing Americans among groups. What I’m saying is if you study history, “there’s nothing new under the sun”. In the early elections, the parties accused eachother of remaining loyal to the crown.

We can only be divided if we allow it. It is all based on coveting your neighbor’s goods. Probably why God told Moses to write down the 10th commandment.

Rick Warren’s brand of religiosity turns me off. He seems to me to be a self-promoter, a man who wants everyone to love him.
When you stand for the Truth of God, you will be persecuted. When you try to please everyone to be a popular public figure, you are just straddling the fence so to speak….hedging your bets. Warren huffs and puffs about “civility”. When Truth is spoken feathers are always ruffled.
Here is a good article about Warren from back in February 2012.

I’m sorry to hear Rev. Warren won’t be hosting the forum.
During the Obama/McCain forum four years ago, Obama showed himself to be inarticulate and uneducated and the world got to see how poorly this man presents himself without handlers.
However, having said that, Rev. Warren is correct that our religious liberties are in jeopardy in this country under this President.

I, for one, am sick to death of people like Rick stating “both” sides are being uncivil. Dirtbag Obama is the one throwing out the “Felon” & “Murderer” label on Romney. Romney is putting out truthful, undisputable ads calling out Obama on his hipocracy and overall worthless presidency. I guess in Rick Warren’s world, facts about the black guy are called uncivil and are equal to the outright lies Obama and his team put out (deny, then stand behind again) about Romney. Remember, Rick is the same guy who gave Obama the pass on abortion (or 3rd tri-mester abortion – can’t remember which) when he said it was above his pay grade.
