WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Pastor Rick Warren says he’s canceled plans for a “civil forum” featuring the presidential candidates because their campaign is so uncivil.
Neither the Obama campaign nor the Romney campaign says their candidate had committed to appearing at the forum at Warren’s Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., near Los Angeles. However Warren said that both candidates had indicated they were interested and the church had started traffic and security planning. The forum had been planned for this week.
In an interview published Wednesday by the Orange County Register, Warren said the forum’s goal was to promote civility and personal respect between people with major differences. He said that‘s not been the climate of the presidential campaign and that he doesn’t expect that to change.
“We created the civil forums to promote civility and personal respect between people with major differences,” Warren told the paper. “The forums are meant to be a place where people of goodwill can seriously disagree on significant issues without being disagreeable or resorting to personal attack and name-calling. But that is not the climate of today’s campaign. I’ve never seen more irresponsible personal attacks, mean-spirited slander, and flat-out dishonest attack ads, and I don’t expect that tone to change before the election.”
“It would be hypocritical to pretend civility for one evening only to have the name-calling return the next day,” he added.
But that isn’t the only reason. In a question-and-answer format published on the Register’s site, Warren reveals there’s another larger issue that led to the cancellation [emphasis added]:
Q. You said you canceled the presidential civil forum because of the negativity and a larger issue. What is that?
A. It is the crumbling of our constitution’s first guaranteed freedom: the freedom of religion. This issue is more significant and has far greater implications for America’s future. People have forgotten that America was founded by people who came here to escape religious persecution. Freedom of religion is the first freedom mentioned in the Bill of Rights – before freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to assemble, and every other freedom.
And yet today, at the city, the state, and the federal levels, government bureaucrats are daily trying to limit that freedom, impose restrictions, and stifle expressions of faith on campuses, in hospitals, and in businesses. There are widespread attempts to redefine the First Amendment to simply mean “You are free to believe anything at your place of worship but you are not free to practice your conscience elsewhere.”
The constitution doesn’t just guarantee your freedom to worship; it guarantees you freedom from government intervention in you daily living out what you believe. That‘s why we’ve chosen to host a civil forum on religious freedom in September instead of the presidential forum. It’s a fight for the constitution, not a personality.
Warren held a candidate forum in 2008 with Obama and Republican John McCain.

At first, I skimmed the article with disappointment, going straight for the comment section for reading. I was ready to be very negative toward Warren and prepared to call him a “coward”. I was annoyed because regardless of my opinion of mega-church, I wanted somebody other than leftie journalists to moderate a debate. Well, I felt that old, familiar check in my spirit to skim again! Yikes, I am wrong, again, yes, I said wrong:(
Apparently, Warren is actually usng his platform to correct Obama’ first on the civility, and more importantly…..religious freedom!
Please see it! Warren is boycotting Obama based on policies effecting religious freedom and civility. He is so thoroughly disappointed in the artificial color and sweetners of the “koolaid”, not going to allow it in his church!
I am not sure if he has issues with Romney or Ryan, I guess it will be a wait, listen, and see. Here it could be the old anti-mormon and anti-catholic protestant prejudice, but again he says he is doing Freedom of Religion conference..so, I suppose not!
Sorry, for repeating myself, I want my comment readand pg 2 takes patience?

“Q. What do you think are the candidates’ views of religious freedom?
A. President Obama’s policies clearly show what he values and I have told him that I adamantly disagree with those particular policies. I have not talked about this issue with Governor Romney, but I would imagine that as a Mormon he’d obviously understand the importance of protecting all religions against persecution, and ensuring people’s rights to practice their conscience without government intervention.”
He invited a Leading Catholic, so, R/R faith is not his issue.
Yup, HE IS TAKING A STAND AGAINST O’anti-christ’s anti-civil actions and anti-religious freedoms.!
Come on Blaze readers,
we should be supporting Warren’s actions, being similiar to Daniel refusing to bow or stop praying! Just wait to see the IRS, going after the taxes of Warren and several church leaders or contributers. Watch and see for a scandle to be revealed somewhere to cause a church split or embarrassment. Hold on Warren, u POed the devil, and persecution is coming.
Perhaps, we should be praying instead of joining the “crucify” Warren and his church crowd.
Sorry, again?

Warren, as Billy Graham, humbly admitted years ago during the Nixon admin., got caught up in the rarified air of the political scene. Warren hasn’t the marbles—isn’t humble enough to admit he was suckered in to vote for Obama. We are called to be discerning …I agree … my point and I stand by it, is that we shold not listen to what somebody says about somebody and their purpose for their statement. That is not discernment. I asked a Pastor one time ( was have problems with through a common program) what causes disagreements between people. He responded by saying mis-understanding … not understanding the intent or HEART. I never told him why I went to him. I was checking myself. I can see from far away whether or not it is a fruit tree for sure but I cannot deem it’s spoiled without sampling. I get that. What you seem to not accept is that folks have sampled Warren and found him spoiled.
I know MANY people of faith that have a jaded eye with respect to “mega” churches in general. The very idea puts them off. Me, I try to listen to the message and decide if it’s for me or not.
Most are not.
Many in an effort to attract as large an audience as possible leave out or gloss over things some folks find “uncomfortable”. Some delve into the political arena. Some carry the tone of the opinions of the pastor rather than the teachings from The Word.
Is Warren right or wrong? Osteen? Robertson and Graham?

Rick Warren also does not take a salary at Saddleback. 2005 Warren returned his 25 years of salary to the church and discontinued taking a salary. He says he and his wife became “reverse tithers”, giving away 90% of their income and living off 10%.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:57amExactly. The uncivility is all in the Democratic leadership, Obama, Reid, Pelosi, ad nauseum. Republicans have always practiced what they preach, civility in discourse and action. It won’t end now, just because Obama has become unhinged.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 9:09amSQUID: Interesting that the attacks you mentioned were against individuals while the Democrats today are pitting groups/ classes against one another. Guess that is the result of the Democrats’ New Big Brother War on Capitalism and Religion.

A civil society does not consist of angels. If you have difficulty seeing the difference in civility between the leadership of both parties you are either watching and hearing with your eyes and ears closed or you have no understanding of what a civil society is and requires.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 9:38amI agree with your premise about dividing Americans among groups. What I’m saying is if you study history, “there’s nothing new under the sun”. In the early elections, the parties accused eachother of remaining loyal to the crown.
We can only be divided if we allow it. It is all based on coveting your neighbor’s goods. Probably why God told Moses to write down the 10th commandment.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:29amRick Warren’s brand of religiosity turns me off. He seems to me to be a self-promoter, a man who wants everyone to love him.
When you stand for the Truth of God, you will be persecuted. When you try to please everyone to be a popular public figure, you are just straddling the fence so to speak….hedging your bets. Warren huffs and puffs about “civility”. When Truth is spoken feathers are always ruffled.
Here is a good article about Warren from back in February 2012.

You said, “John Piper ( a straight bible guy) has a good interview on his site with Rick Warren. I suggest that you watch the interview instead of listen to what other people think of what Rick IS THINKING.”
My opinion of Rick Warren was formed by reading his books and listening to him speak. His watered down belief system is not the same as what I read of in scripture.

Thanks for the responce … glad to hear of your efforts. I would still highly suggest that you take a little more time to watch the interview as he does address some of which you speak. If you are familar with John Piper he is not a guy easily fooled. (it’s a good discussion and your loss if you do not)

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:28amI’m sorry to hear Rev. Warren won’t be hosting the forum.
Report Post »During the Obama/McCain forum four years ago, Obama showed himself to be inarticulate and uneducated and the world got to see how poorly this man presents himself without handlers.
However, having said that, Rev. Warren is correct that our religious liberties are in jeopardy in this country under this President.
God bless America and may the voters open their eyes to the truth of this corrupt Serial LIar, anti-American Obama.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:25amThis is just setting the stage for future debates….
I predict that this will be the first presidential election the sitting president will not participate in any debates…. nor will the vice president…… HeII, he won’t even sit down with the white house press.
If he is too scared to sit with press and answer their questions, what makes you think he or Biden will sit down with Romney or Ryan?
Obama is a COWARD!

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:23amI, for one, am sick to death of people like Rick stating “both” sides are being uncivil. Dirtbag Obama is the one throwing out the “Felon” & “Murderer” label on Romney. Romney is putting out truthful, undisputable ads calling out Obama on his hipocracy and overall worthless presidency. I guess in Rick Warren’s world, facts about the black guy are called uncivil and are equal to the outright lies Obama and his team put out (deny, then stand behind again) about Romney. Remember, Rick is the same guy who gave Obama the pass on abortion (or 3rd tri-mester abortion – can’t remember which) when he said it was above his pay grade.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:18amThis is pure baloney…..If Rick Warren really believes that than WHAT BETTER REASON to have his civil forum? The reality is, one of the two candidates will be the president of the United States and the country will need to come together some way. I think that Rick Warren is using the “incivility” argument as an excuse for not holding the forum.
