Pastor Rick Warren: ‘I’d Go to Jail Rather Than Cave’ to Contraceptive Mandate

Rick Warren: Id Go to Jail Rather Than Cave to Contraceptive Mandate

Rick Warren, the well-known author of “The Purpose Driven Life” and the founding pastor at Saddleback Church in California, is well-known for his willingness to speak out on social and theological issues. That being said, Warren is typically relatively benign in tone and declarative sentiment when it comes to partisan politics.

In 2008, the pastor declined to endorse either presidential candidate, though he did moderate a presidential forum during which both Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Barack Obama were able to share their perspectives on a wide variety of faith-related issues.

(Related: 5 Reasons the Obama Admin May Be Losing the Contraceptive Mandate Battle)

But when it comes to the Obama administration’s contraceptive mandate — a regulation that will force many Catholic and religious employers to violate their beliefs, he is making some bold declarations. Earlier this week, Warren took to Twitter, where he made his stance vehemently known.

“I’m not Catholic, but I stand in 100% solidarity with my brothers & sisters to practice their belief against govt pressure,” he wrote in one tweet. “I’d go to jail rather than cave in to a government mandate that violates what God commands us to do,” Warren wrote in another.

The faith leader isn’t alone in his stance, either. LifeNews.com has more:

Richard Land, a pro-life leader who is a top official with the South Baptist Church, said the same thing the day prior.

“When it comes to abortifacients, and many birth-control methods are abortifacients,” Land said, this mandate is “reprehensible in its demands for people to violate their conscience.” “We are not going to do this. We have a First Amendment right to freedom of conscience, and we’re going to defend it. If we have to defend it by going to jail, so be it.”

Here are Warren’s tweets:

Rick Warren: Id Go to Jail Rather Than Cave to Contraceptive MandateEvangelicals, like Warren and Land, have been coming out en masse to defend Catholics against the government’s new health care regulations.

Disenlightened, you are correct that they are doing it to everyone. Am not sure how much/how many different programs are being funded now, but when my kids were in school they were talking about accepting government funds for certain scholarship programs for public school children to offset their costs. There are probably other type programs within the schools that would qualify them to apply for government grants. When the green monster takes over, there is no stopping it.

I want to preface this by saying that I am a practicing Catholic. The Catholic Church had this coming to them. The Pope and Bishops are always in favor of welfare programs. They were in favor of Obamacare. The Pope recently called for a taxation scheme and banking system worldwide the redistributes wealth. They continually confuse government welfare (by force) with charity. The churches used to run charities fully funded by voluntary donations. Now they expect the government to either do it for them or assist them. I saw it coming when GW Bush advocated using faith based groups to do some of the “charitable” work. It was a fat worm with a hook in it.

The church sees the government as source of money. But when somebody lures you and convinces you to get in bed with them, you should plan on getting screwed.

God commands his people to populate the earth. That requires marriage between a man and a woman without contraceptives. For the United States to be pro-Gay promotes the Islamic movement that we don’t populate as quickly as Muslims who are on pace to be the majority by the year 2040.

What is a practicing Catholic? Put it this way, you continue the practice of not following Christ. Do you practice just an hour out of each day, 2 or 3 days a week? How committed are you for denying Christ Jesus and what He teaches?

Being a Christian is developing a relationship with Christ Jesus through prayer and scripture from the Holy Bible. Roman Catholic Sacraments don’t reflect the Gospel of Christ Jesus.

Satan’s fingerprints are all over this government.
Just makes the time for “The Warning” to draw closer.
The evil one wants all churches knocked to the ground.
But, the church will never die, even though the Father may allow this scourging now.

God is the source of Truth, the Light. These things this administration is doing, is not of God.

We must all join together, all religions, and fight such evil.
Those who live in Truth, have a moral responsibility, not to remain silent.
Darkness like taking away religious freedom, will only bring more power-grabbing.
Just take a look back to all our freedoms lost, since 2008!
We must fight to make them accountable, in order to not be at the receiving end, of all their wrong beliefs.

For awhile now, we christians have opposed civil disobedience (breaking the law) in favor of using the voting booth to get what we want. Our fall-back has always been that when the government starts trying to interfere with the laws of God, then we will rise. Is this now the case? If Rick Warren is willing to go to jail, that means he would first have to break the laws of the government. Everyone start thinking about your breaking point – cuz these things are only going to get worse

How about taxes? How about an open border? How about illegals overtaxing an over taxed system? How about gutting the military and throwing money away at green religion? So many issues to take up with conviction and righteousness, and the sticky wicket of birth control and abortion gets all the energy. We have elected officials openly mocking and laughing at oaths of office. No, going to save up for the abortion and birth control fight instead. So many avenues to advance the fight, and abortion and birth control win the day while illegals suck the system dry and half our populations pays zero taxes. God help us indeed.

Satan knows the Bible better than any man, and many men can quote scripture and stand in the pulpit each Sunday, to manipulate God’s Word. WHOLE TRUTH is needed, and why if any clergy says something you can’t understand, or makes you question what they are saying, the Bible should be used, and not their books to justify the spin many clergy run today. This is really dangerous territory that Obama has entered and we ignore it at our peril. The founding fathers of this nation saw men like Obama in it’s future and were intelligent enough to create a constitution that would keep men like Obama in check. I do not believe it’s a coincidence that the left has all of a sudden become very vocal about devaluing the constitution. Obama only recently himself bemoaned the constraints that the constitution places on him. This nation should thank God everyday for the constitution, it’s the only thing keeping Obama restrained and in check and stopping us from devolving into what Europe has become today. More and more I see the founding fathers of this nation as incredibly intelligent men with the foresight of prophets in their tailoring of the declaration of independence and the U.S. constitution.

Your evidence of “devaluing” is anecdotal at best, the rhetorical pap you’re getting fed from the extreme right has clouded your judgement. If the government was forcing the Church and it‘s followers to take or use contraception then I’d the first to cry foul…. but alas that‘s not what’s happening is it. What has happened here is, conservatives, desperate to find some issue they feel will further their agenda, have chosen a loser social issue dear to the hearts of the evangelical base, a minority and shrinking religiously fanatical base. There isn’t anything that the “leadership” of the republican party won’t stoop to in an attempt to make the left and the President in particular, submit to their views of morality even though they don’t often practice what they preach. Look no further then Blazers.

I apologize in advance if this offends Rick Warren fans but Rick shares some responsibility for Obama’s being elected in 2008. I saw the wolf in sheep‘s clothing then and couldn’t see how Rick didn’t. The debate Rick hosted gave credence to Obama’s supposed Christian faith among evangelicals. Rick did a horrible job as a Pastor moderating the event not holding Obama accountable to Christian tenets or even asking sufficient theology questions. Interesting to see Rick quoting Acts 5:29 now because it sure seemed he trying to please to man in 2008.

funny, i saw the event when it was shown live, and i thought that Obama gave a blundering response to each of Warren’s questions. not that McCain was any better. anyone with half a brain could see that Obama was espousing something he did not believe in one bit. it exposed him for who he is. if people were drooling over the prospect of Obama being a Christian, then they themselves are not very aware of Christianity itself. at that point in the campaign, Barry had already perpetrated enough lies that people would believe him that the world was flat. sorry those of you who didn’t see through it.

      mr molotov cocktail,

On the contrary, religious institutions have every right to observe policies and proceedures that are in keeping with their faith. One of the central reasons that European settlers first migrated to this continent was for religious freedom. Thus it is forever enshrined in our Constitution.

There are plenty of religious owned and operated businesses that are allowed to observe their faith.

There are also plenty of ways for people to purchase contraception without forcing the Pope to buy it for them.

Will Obama force Kosher delis to start serving ham sandwiches next?

I will never compromise on my religious convictions. Our rights come from God, and no establishment of humankind has the authority to deny that which God has given. Our government officials have to take oaths of office to uphold those rights. When they violate those oaths they hold no authority in this nation any longer.

@Oldironsides: “Be ye not unequally yoked with unbelievers” In accepting 501c3 designation, the IRS(government) effectively muzzled the pulpit. There are government ‘guidelines’ for what a pastor can and cannot preach, i.e. cannot preach about the sin of sodomy (hate speech), cannot preach that the Jews killed Christ, etc etc. Just because they are ‘non-profit‘ doesn’t make them good. Contextually speaking, ‘profit’, as spoken of in the bible, is edifying. So what does it mean, to a Christian, when a church is ‘non-profit’? (Non believers need not answer, you don‘t know what I’m talking about.)
