Pastor Speaks Out on Interracial Church Ban: ‘We’re Going to Get it Resolved’

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (The Blaze/AP) — The pastor of an eastern Kentucky church where the congregation voted to not accept interracial couples as members says the decision is unlikely to stand. The Blaze first reported on the church’s startling decision to prevent interracial couples from leading worship services and becoming members earlier this week.

As we reported, at the heart of the decision stands 24-year-old Stella Harville. Her father, Dean Harville, is a longtime member of and secretary for church who has come out strongly against the newfound regulation. While his daughter grew up in the church and worshiped there, she is not currently a member.

Stella, who is working on a master’s degree in optical engineering at a college in Indiana, brought her African-born fiancé, Ticha Chikuni, to church last June. The two performed worship music and, as a result, Stella claims the pastor (who has since left his post) decided to push a measure placing bans on interracial couples.

Stacy Stepp, pastor of Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church, told the Appalachian News-Express in Pikeville he believes state and national Free Will Baptist associations will stand with him and other members of the church who oppose the ban.

Stepp also said he’s seeking another vote on the issue, perhaps as early as Sunday, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. ”We’re going to get it resolved,” Stepp said, going on to claim that he doesn’t believe the congregation is racist.

The Blaze spoke with Dean over the phone this week and he told us that he is hopeful that he and his wife will be able to convince the church to change its mind. Still, regardless of what happens, Stella claims that she likely won’t go back to the house of worship.

Dean confirmed that a decision would likely be made this weekend and that an earlier meeting this past Wednesday to address the matter had been cancelled.

The Herald-Leader has more on the controversy:

The National Association of Free Will Baptists issued its first formal statement on the controversy Thursday, saying the vote by the Pike County congregation does not reflect the denomination’s position.

“Many interracial couples are members of Free Will Baptist churches. They are loved, accepted, and respected by their congregations,” said the statement issued by Keith Burden, executive secretary of the association.

“It is unfair and inaccurate to characterize the denomination as racist,” the statement said.

The newspaper continues, claiming that the Free Will Baptists have a history of championing human rights. In fact, according to the group’s statement, the denomination was a leader in the fight against slavery in the 1800s. The statement goes on to say that there is no policy barring marriage between individuals of different races, as the issue has never come up.

Many members of the congregation did not vote last Sunday on a statement that everyone could attend services, but that interracial couples could not join the church or have a part in worship services. Of those who did vote, 9 favored it and 6 opposed it.

But — with only 15 of the 40 congregants voting, one can’t help but wonder why the others abstained. Stay tuned for more on this developing story this weekend.

      Yes, good points, FREEDOM 1776, but if you don‘t like this Church then don’t attend it. And if these two young people wish to get married, then it really isn’t any of our business. BUT why are they trying to get married in a Church with a congregation that is so obviously hostile to the union? If this isn’t just grandstanding on the part of two selfish youngsters, then what is? IF you believe in wearing clothes WITH buttons on them, enjoy electricity, and drive a car, then DON’T try to get married in an Ahmish Congregation. If you want to commit miscegenation, then go to one of the THOUSANDS of churches that not only approve but applaud such activity.

      Well, the point is if you let a church you went to most of your life or any church discriminate against you or anyone else then it is saying it is ok they do that and it isn’t. Any real church wouldn’t do this in the first place. Someone has to make a stand and it won’t be people who agree with the church so it has to be someone who the church went against.

      lol……sorry Pig pen…had to laugh at your “miscegenation” word..considering it is a very archaic word used since the late 1800′s! BUT not so much today…I too, love my English but I couldn’t help but wonder if you thought about how many people would understand it. You do have a point in hand & I see you have some agreement. But, bottom line is that this church, should be OUTED..or should be put out there to be seen by all..for they are not doing what God commanded. Loving thy neighbor! Moses, I guess would not have been welcome there either! He married out of his race, tribe. And his sister Marion complained, remember? And what happened to her for that horrible attitude? umm,.. lets see…oh yeah! God caused her to be a leper! Good thing He isn’t doing that any longer, eh? That church is wrong!!!. That was her family’s church for years. Why wouldn’t she want to be married there? I THINK YOU GUYS OVERLOOKED THE REAL WRONG HERE!!!

    First, quit bad mouthing the southern states. I travel the entire US and everywhere I go I see where white flight has taken place and metropolitan inner-city misery has set in. Most people who retire would like to move south if they could afford it, your welcome here just leave your liberal ideas behind. The social experiment of the “Great Society” is over and it was a dismal failure. I am sick and tired of hearing about other peoples poor choices. The group of people that should be up in arms is black women as they are being shut out by street walking white women.

    I had no problem with the way they resolved it the first time. Mixed marriage is disgusting. It’s their church. They should be able to do what they want. There’s no law against it. If you don’t like it, don’t go. Why should it matter to anyone? Why can’t busybodies mind their own business? When did it become popular to force other people to your way of thinking? What happened to tolerance?

      Agreed. Since when was it a crime to have free will and the freedom to associate with whom ever you prefer? I posted on this before and as I said, it is not the African fellows fault. Poor guy was just trying to fit in with his girlfriend’s folk. Well, not everyone accepts FORCED situations as willingly as the majority that has been conditioned, threatened and shamed into it. I say, live & let live. I will not go to Africa and tell them what to do in ANY country there and perhaps this girl with the African boyfriend should do the same. By the way, let her go to South Africa or any other country on the continent of Africa and find out how welcome she is there. South Africa is now a genocidal place for White People. My wife and I both have mechanical engineering degrees. My oldest daughter has a 4.5 GPA, plays varsity Volleyball, section leader in the marching band and part of the honors society. My youngest has a 3.5 GPA, plays in the JV Volleyball team and is in the marching band.

      So what about you and your “pure un-disgusting” marriage? What have you, your spouse and your kids done with your life?

      I go to a very conservative Baptist church and my family is accepted and so are other minorities. One church does not make all churches. Ones Baptist church does not make all churches.     40 members??? That’s an awfully big (and looks new) church for just 40 members. Was that a trash can/ashtray outside the front door? Nice.

    Did the old pastor go to a different church? If so, they should become members of that church before they can be banned. That’ll learn him.

    On a different note, I hear Southern Baptists are about to drop the ‘Southern’ because they think it gives the appearance of racism. Maybe the ‘Free Will’ Baptists should drop ‘Free Will’… because it gives the appearnace of …. uh… well… Free Will.

    Jim Crow ended just a few decades ago and discrimination against ethnic minorities is alive and well today (especially in the South). It is things like this that make it look like conservatives are racist at their core.       Not all Southern conservative whites are racist. That was too strong. Apologies. But bigotry against blacks is still alive and well today and is most prevalent in the South. You can pretend it has vanished but you would be fooling yourself. Soft racism (blacks are lazy, blacks are violent) has replaced old stereotypes but it still exists.

There are many liberals who are racist and try to hide it behind stupid platitudes aimed at minorities. They will espouse “equality” among the “races” (there is only one race; the human race) as long as they are more equal. The idea that someone with a different skin color should get special consideration for education and employment is one of the most racist ideas ever. The idea that some people cannot be criticized for their beliefs simply because they have a different skin color is more to shut down debate than to “protect” the target.

      To say that sin (ANY sin) disqualifies a person from entering the Kingdom of Heaven is to completely disregard the New Testament and Jesus, Himself. There is only one way through those gates and being perfect/without sin is not an option. We are ALL, without exception, fallen. That is the nature of man and THAT is the point.

      Aspire to be good but be prepared forgive (even yourself). Opening your arms, especially to those seeking the Lord, would be a good start.

      The only marriage God forbids is a man lying with a man as he would a woman. He highly discourages marrying someone not of your own faith (like a Christian marrying a Muslim or even a Jewish person), but says nothing of color. The “not of your faith” is being unequally yoked. My son’s best friend is from Africa and he left because his family is Christian.

      Shylow, Ezra has absolutely nothing to do with skin color and race, and everything to do with idol worship. The foreign women the Israelites were marrying were of other religions that worshipped idols and often involved human sacrifices. This kind of thing could not be allowed to infiltrate the community as it would drive the people away from God. Foreigners were welcome in Israel as long as they adapted to the culture and obeyed God’s law.

      The Bible never forbade mixed racial marriages because looked at in the context of the times… the people were separated by GOD at the tower of Babel. GOD split the human race up into individual specific tribes and we were instructed to keep separate. Look, GOD created ALL CATS right? Well, why do Tigers not mate with Lions naturally? Both of these animals are beautiful creations and have very distinct features right? Well… why do they not mate? Maybe it’s because there never was a Tiger naturally inhabiting the continent of Africa. Why is that? WHY? If mankind interbreeds with every other race on earth all the beautiful differentiating characteristics will disappear and thus wipe out what GOD originally intended. No one on earth bitches about the Asian cultures aggressively protecting their culture by their refusal as a society to inter race mix. They are proud and should be of their distinctive cultures. How about “Black & Brown Pride” celebration? Why does no one raise bloody murder about the abject hatred of that? Oh, I guess the hatred is only reserved for White Pride proponents, righhhtttttttt…….? Stand in the BLAZE of Truth and it will set ye free!     Wrong, what color your sin is has nothing to do with sin, homosexuality does, read Rom 1:23-32. All churches should welcome anyone to attend including homosexuals, a practicing homosexual is still in sin, hadn’t been saved, so would not meet God‘s criteria for believer’s baptism unless they lied and said they weren’t, then it would be on them!

      So, your ability to reason guides you to the decision that because a tiny church in a tiny town in Kentucky made a bad decision, that ALL Free Will Baptists are this way? So I can assume that because there are some black men in jail in my town that ALL black men are criminals? Because some of the Hispanics in my town are in gangs and like to bbq goats in their back yard that they are ALL that way? Do you mean that ALL Catholic priests abuse young boys? WOW!       Not all of them…but trying being part of a church that acts like they accept you until you announce you want marry another member who is not of your race and see what happens. I found out in the early 70′s. (exact same story) Not just a black/white issue either. White/any other race as well.

    Does God’s Word the Bible condemn inter-racial marriage?

    It did, through the Mosaic Law Covenant, That Law was to keep the legal Hebrew ancestral lineage in tact until the Messiah arrived. And also it was to protect the Israelites from foreign ideas and false worship that would accompany those marriages. But after the Law was fulfilled, accomplished, and Jesus was born in the family line of Judah, inter-racial marriages were not condemned any more.

    If a particular church does not accept this, then it boils down to their being racially prejudice. And that is condemned in God’s Word.

    I had to cancel my GBTV because I was charged $44.95 on 11/17/11 and service was shut off 11/22/11…don’t know why. I’ve called and emailed a few times each, had my case ‘escalated’ 3 times, and been told I’d get a call soon. NO CALL…it’s 12/2/11.

    I don‘t know what’s up, but I don’t like GBTV taking advantage of me. So, I feel I have no choice but to cancel.

    ANYBODY ELSE having a problem with this??

      I checked and 9.95 is what they pulled last month, they won’t pull until 12/18 for this month! I‘m sure it’s an honest mistake, they would last long if they pulled that. I think Beck is an honest man, just one thing I have a problem with and that’s trashing all the GOP candidates but Romney!

    I noticed yesterday as The Beck replacementand the writer of this article and one more guy was having the oval table political discussion, they were trying to move votes from Newt to Romney, they played a video that was put out by Ron Paul putting Newt down in several areas, Billy Hallowell said, yea there one on Romney that Huntsman put out too that just as bad, The Beck replacement quickly killed that comment and moved on without playing the Romney clip..It is sooo easy to see the Blaze that day had an agenda and the full truth didn’t live there. I predicted this would be crucify Newt week, I look for more to come, don’t be a turnip, do your own Romney research. I can’t think if a reason the Blaze would give Romney favor, can you?
