Florida Pastor Terry Jones on Saturday made good on his threat to burn the Islamic holy book, lighting a copy of the Koran on fire to protest the imprisonment of Iranian Christian pastor Youcef Nadarkhani.
Jones had threatened to burn the Koran and images of Muhammad back in February as a way to demand Nadarkhani’s release from prison in Iran. Nadarkhani has been jailed since 2009 following his arrest on apostasy charges for his conversion to Christianity and is reportedly facing execution.
Wearing an “Infidel” T-shirt, Jones burned a copy of the Koran and an image of Muhammad in a portable fire pit on church property late Saturday afternoon, the Gainesville Sun reported. About 20 people gathered for the event, which included speeches by Jones and another pastor calling for Nadarkhani’s release. The event was also streamed live over the Internet.

“We take no joy or pleasure in this particular act,” Jones said after the book was set afire, according to video footage posted online.
“We pray that the Muslim community, perhaps through this act or perhaps through the many evangelistic aspects of Christianity and the reaching out to the Muslim community, they would somehow be set free from the deception of Islam, from the deception of Muhammad, from the death and destruction that Islam has caused since its very beginning,” he said.
According to the Sun, the Gainesville Fire Rescue issued Jones a citation after the demonstration because despite having authorization for a burn, he didn’t have approval to burn books.
The Pentagon had urged Jones to reconsider his plan, citing fears it could put U.S. service members at risk.
Jones made international headlines in 2010 for his plan to burn hundreds of Korans on the anniversary of Sept. 11. He drew widespread condemnation, including from President Barack Obama, the Vatican and Gen. David Petraeus, then the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan. Jones ultimately canceled the event, though did burn one copy of the book in spring 2010, sparking deadly riots in Afghanistan.
An assistant pastor at Jones’ Dove World Outreach Center also burned a copy of the Koran in March 2011 and broadcast it on the Internet, prompting violence that resulted in at least 12 deaths, according to the Sun.

“Burning isn’t a popular choice, because fire is associated with the devil as well as the early rival religion Zoroastrianism, but some scholars find it acceptable. Saudi religious authorities place burning on par with burial, as long as it’s done ritually on mosque property. They point out that Uthman ibn Affan, a friend to the prophet and early caliph, sanctioned the burning of nonconforming Qurans after compiling the official version. Other scholars view burning as a last resort, for example, in an emergency situation to prevent the book from being defiled. After burning, the ashes should be buried or scattered over water.”

The Quran is considered to be the speech of God to humankind — word for word — explains Imam Johari Abdul-Malik.
“The traditional way of disposing of used or damaged copies of the text of the Quran is by burning it,” he says.
But Malik, the director of outreach for the Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Va., says that doesn’t include burning it with the trash. That’s what U.S. officials say mistakenly happened with the Qurans in Afghanistan. The burning of Qurans at a NATO airbase near Kabul led to days of rioting by Muslims who say it was a desecration of their holy book and an affront to Islam. President Obama has since apologized for the incident.
Islam certainly isn’t the only religion that has rules about how to handle its sacred text. Many faiths prescribe specific rituals for disposing of them, and the bottom line is respect for the words on the page.
Malik, who spent time in Afghanistan in November 2010, says the troops should have asked for guidance.
“If one said, ‘Well, we’re burning some Qurans today,‘ that wouldn’t incite riots in Afghanistan,” he says. “The problem is when one puts a malicious intent as part of the burning.”
Malik says the assumption there is that Americans disrespect Muslims. That’s why there would be such a visceral response to burning the Quran, even though a layperson could do so under Muslim law — as long a

“So actually the Florida man is doing the Muslims a favor by disposing of several copies of the Koran in a proper way”
That’s a very interesting point. Now the Koran burnings are kind of funny and ironic.
Having said that, the reason some of us want to burn Korans is because Islam is a religion of conquest, rather than persuasion, and the fact that Arab countries think they have a right to tell us how to behave is laughable.
Were it not for that, we would either buy Korans in order to have debates with them, or we just wouldn’t bother buying them.
Terry Jones has a right to burn his own property, whether it’s a Koran, Bible, or Flag. But he doesn’t have a right to tell other countries how to behave.

Posted on April 29, 2012 at 6:11pmIs the aroma of a burning Koran pleasing in God’s nostrils or is it the prayers of the saints that He enjoys? What causes God’s hand to move? Where does the power of God have its limits? Is it at the prison bars of pastor Youcep that God’s power stops? How many here that are for or against the burning of the koran have said a prayer for the safety of pastor Youcep? If not his release, then pray that he remain a faithful witness for the Lord until his execution.
What need does Islam have for more reasons to hate Christ?
What reason does the Godless, lawless world need to hate Christ and persecute His faithful?
What weapons will you chose to battle a spiritual enemy?
A burning book is kind of a weak weapon don’t you think?
.
It is high time to sharpen your skills with the only weapon that will prevail;
“For the word of God [is] living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? [Shall] tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” Romans 8:35
Who is our Captain, the one who has already secured the victory on our behalf?
“Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations.” Rev 19:15
In Jesus alone do we have the victory. Follow Him.

Today most Christians think that they can just sit on their couch and pray the worlds problems away. Pray is important but it is action that is required. That is like saying I will just pray for this guy to become a Christian but never hit the streets to tell him the message of salvation in Christ. Since when did Jesus tell us to just allow evil to flourish? Christians should get angry at evil and at Satan‘s devices and if it doesn’t make you angry then you don’t have God in your heart because evil makes God angry. Christians should be standing against evil in this country and speaking out for truth. I would have loved to see today all the Milquetoast Christians today react when Jesus overturned temples and drove out the money changers with whips when he got ANGRY for turning his Fathers house into a den of thieves. Today we have a man making a point to the world by burning a Satanic book that is responsible for misleading billions and causing hate and murder around the world but yet when this man tries to bring attention to it Christians react and say it is wrong? What nonsense, Christians need to be bold and expose this evil for what it is.

I think Christians have to be discerning in calling righteousness GOOD and evil-doing BAD and shout it to the rooftops, not just quietly accepting that the world is an evil place. “Let your light shine” is in word and deed. If Christians don’t stand for RIGHTEOUSNESS then evil wins. Just alittle bit of true history for your education: The First Crusade came about because the Eastern Empire was being attacked by MUSLIMS and the Eastern Emperor begged the Western for assistance. If the Pope had not rallied the troops of Europe (Catholic) to the Crusade, then you and I would be MUSLIM. Christianity would have disappeared from the earth (that was not God’s plan so thus the Crusades protected Christianity in Europe for another 1,000 years).Spain suffered under the Muslim rule (Moors) at the same time period with the invaders pushing north there. God used both violent warriors and men of faith to fight Muslims and protect the faith of Jesus Christ. True history.

Report Post »A little context to go with your Luke 22:36 would have been nice. When Jesus sent out the seventy He told them to not take money or even an extra cloak or walking sticks. By His grace and prayers to the father, Jesus assured their protection and provision. Now in Luke 22 He was preparing His followers for His betrayal and crucifixion and telling them that they should take appropriate precautions for their own safety and provision. When He was absent from the world, Jesus was no longer the direct guarantor of their wellbeing. In fact He promised them trials, persecution, and in the end death to all but one of them.
How then do you see this verse pertaining to our present day conflict with Islam? Should we read Jesus’ call to carry a sword as promoting the conversion of Islam by the sword?
How about it being Jesus’ way of telling us to take proper precautions for safety and provision as we go out into this dangerous world and preach the gospel of His kingdom?
Look at what happened to all of those that He was speaking too in Luke 22. All of them were imprisoned, tortured, stoned, and except for one, put to a horrible death for the sake of Christ and His gospel.
Revelation 13 says, “He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.”
Here we see that the saints are to wield patience and faith, and not the sword.
What say you?

Report Post »You say, “I believe God would approve” Really now?
Was Peter’s prison doors opened in Acts 5:19 by the demonstration of his followers or through their prayers? Who did the freeing? Was Paul rescued from beatings, stonings, and shipwreck, by burning books or by prayer? Who has the power to save?
Who is this pastor calling more attention too, Pastor Youcep, or himself? I can site numerous occasions of prisoners being miraculously freed by the power of prayer. Can’t think of a single instance of it occurring by the burning of a book. If Youcep is killed for his witness of Christ, we won’t see it in our news, but still to God be the glory. If Youcep is miraculously freed through prayer we won’t see it in the news, but still to God be the Glory. If Youcep is freed by the burning of Korans, who will get the glory, and the TV news coverage? Won’t be God.

Islamists burn the Holy Bible all the time without any physical retaliation from Christians.
Islamists threaten to kill anyone who burns their Koran or an image of Muhammad.
So who’s the real hater?
The Holy Bible has the word of God and images of Jesus, but Christians don’t get mad, we turn the other cheek and just buy another Bible.
It’s just paper, with words and pictures. We carry the light of God and Jesus in our hearts and souls. No one can take that away from us.
Islamists value pieces of paper and pictures over human lives. They just look for reasons to murder anyone who does not believe exactly as they believe.
They enjoy their sick, perverted, hate-filled lifestyle, and feel threatened by Westerners, who have respect for females. These cowards are afraid that their women will some day “wake up” and rise up against the abusive men.
Their religion is not based on love, kindness, generosity, and forgiveness.

Posted on April 29, 2012 at 11:33amThis spiteful individual that has the title of pastor, has OBVIOUSLY, ALWAYS wanted to do this (burn the Koran). He was just looking for a rationale or there lack of (in his and those that would chose to follow his hate-filled ridiculousness) to do so.
Report Post »http://www.gotquestions.org/agape-love.html
Agape is love which is of and from God, whose very nature is love itself. The Apostle John affirms this in 1 John 4:8: “God is love.” God does not merely love; He is love itself. Everything God does flows from His love.God loves because that is His nature and the expression of His being. He loves the unlovable and the unlovely (us!), not because we deserve to be loved, but because it is His nature to do so, and He must be true to His nature and character. God’s love is displayed most clearly at the Cross, where Christ died for the unworthy creatures who were “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1), not because we did anything to deserve it, “but God commends His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). The object of agape love never does anything to merit His love. We are the undeserving recipients upon whom He lavishes that love. His love was demonstrated when He sent His Son into the world to “seek and save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10), and to provide eternal life to those He sought and saved. He paid the ultimate sacrifice for those He loves.

Report Post »In the same way, we are to love others sacrificially. Jesus gave the parable of the Good Samaritan as an example of sacrifice for the sake of others, even for those who may care nothing at all for us, or even hate us, as the Jews did the Samaritans. Sacrificial love is not based on a feeling, but a determined act of the will, a joyful resolve to put the welfare of others above our own. But this type of love does not come naturally to humans. Because of our fallen nature, we are incapable of producing such a love. If we are to love as God loves, that love—that agape—can only come from its true Source. This is the love which “has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us” when we became His children (Romans 5:5). Because that love is now in our hearts, we can obey Jesus who said, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. As I have loved you, you should also love one another” (John 13:34).

I don‘t like when someone burns a Bible and wouldn’t condone someone burning a different religions holy book. However, I think it is completely ridiculous that our leaders are so terrified of backlash that they honestly fear when a Koran (Qur’an) is burned. We are Americans and have the freedom of speech in whatever form that may take. People portray Jesus and other Biblical figures in terrible ways and that seems to be ok to many of the same ones who get outraged by people burning the Koran.
