Pastor Who Told Parents to ‘Punch’ Effeminate Sons Speaks Out: ‘I Wasn’t Advocating Violence Against Gays’

A North Carolina-based preacher caused furor last week after his sermon encouraging parents to “punch” their gay sons made its way around the blogosphere.
While Pastor Sean Harris of Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, claims he was only joking, gay rights activists, among others, have publicly ridiculed his remarks. Earlier this week, Harris spoke out about the controversy in an interview with CNN.
“Can I make it any clearer?” Harris asked in the original sermon. “Dads, the second you see that son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give them a good punch. OK?”
In his interview with CNN, the pastor explained — as he had in previous media interactions — that he wishes he had been more careful with his wording. He attempted to better frame the meaning behind his commentary.
“I was telling them, in strong words, that we’re not careful. What did I learn this week? Be more careful with your words,” he said, going on to recap how he would re-frame his words if he could go back and do so. ”I would say straighten that wrist…It’s amazing how punch has been equated to inciting violence against gay youth. That’s not what I meant.”
When pressed to provide more information about what, exactly, he intended by his encouragement that parents “punch” those young boys who are acting effeminately, he attempted to clarify.
“A shove, an affirmation. You see coaches give their players a good punch a good slug,” he said. “It’s a way of affirming the gender distinctions between a male and a female.”

Pastor Sean Harris
On the apology front — something many in the gay community would like to hear — Harris is only sorry over his choice of wording, not the Biblical views he holds dear.
“I was apologizing for my failure to say the right thing. To be more careful,” he said. “To make sure that no one thinks that Sean Harris is suggesting, as was said, although I never said this, ‘Beat the gay out of children.’”
The pastor also said that he doesn’t “believe there [is] such thing as gay children.”
“I was dealing with effeminate behavior and instructing parents to affirm the manhood or the womanhood in their children,” Harris said regarding apologizing. ”I don’t think I need to apologize for preaching to my people what the word of God says. That’s my responsibility.”
Members of his church defended Harris, claiming that they knew what the pastor meant during the controversial sermon and that he doesn’t need to apologize or change his wording.
“They knew that I wasn’t advocating violence against gays, lesbians, youth,” he said of his congregants.

News flash, when LGBT young people routinely get beat up by their peers and beaten (to death) by their parents, making a comment about giving one “a good punch”… That is as far from a joke as Obama is from a Constitutional scholar.
He may not THINK that he was urging parents to beat the gay away, but the fact is that that is precisely what he DID do, and he is a singularly odious human being for having done so.

We live in a society where cruelty is being taught. It is not okay. Little children need to be protected and cared for and know their parents love them. There were probably small children in that congregation who now fear this pastor and are afraid if they do anything that Daddy doesn’t like he is going to beat them because he heard it in church. A common one at that. It actually makes me angry that people are so distanced from the concept of “gender” that they don’t even understand what “give them a good punch” means. Slight double standard maybe? And wow what a crazy PC world we live in. I thought I was on CNN reading these comments. What an influence such a small percentage of people can have on the minds of the weak. All these people saying you can‘t use the word ’punch’ and kids in the same sentence! My goodness people, it does not take many brain cells to figure out what the pastor was actually talking about. If you really thought he was encouraging the beating of children then you need to see a counselor and ask how to quit playing the victim in life. What a bunch of pansies. Posted on May 9, 2012 at 2:04pmPeople should not punch their kids for this. Parents should be leaders, not abusers. All kids go through a stage of being babies and delicate and start being more who they are as a few years pass. I am hoping this preacher was at a loss for the appropriate words to describe what he seemed to be attempting to “lead” his son into right choices. The “punch” thing was likely a poor choice of words, if not this man needs to rethink his way of dealing with children. Some people want to toughen up their boys, but believe me that will do that on their own in a few years. Leave kids alone and let them grow into who they are. They were not given to experiment with. Leadership and love will lead a child towards the right thing, but an overbearing ogre will cause his to distance himself from those who are being mean to them. Children are a gift from god and should be treated with respect, disciplined properly and for the right things, and allowed plenty of nourishment, fresh air and sunshine to grow. This is so scary to some men, they are wanting to do a flight or fight thing. It is just not something we should have to be talking about all the time. It should not be encouraged or even talked about in schools. We need leadership in this country and in the homes based upon what is right and good from God.

Most sinners take pleasure in their sin, that is why they do it. The Lord is a liar because you have a sensual appreciation for something he calls an abomination?; weak argument indeed.
Also, the bat is quite correctly identified as a creature that flies (’owph), and not as a bird (tsippowr), in Leviticus 11 where it is among flying creatures that are to be held in abomination, many of which happen to be birds. Please forgive the transliterations of the Hebrew words ‘owph and tsippowr; I could not get the Hebrew characters to load.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 3:43pmShalom,
Christians and Jews who follow the Scripture have never been a customer of the shrimpers, so not much change there and the shrimpers need not worry about their livelyhood.
Nice bit of foolish hyperbole, though; will you also be flying to California to inform the pornography producers that the Christians and Jews do not have a taste for their product? Will you warn Planned Parenthood that Chistians and Jews will no longer be getting abortions? They probably already know.
Yes, what we eat is a portion of how we interact with the world the lord Created. One of the Lord’s first commandments was about what we should and should not eat (Genesis 2:16-17). Our welfare is very high on the Lord’s list.
You recall incorrectly. The Lord is very clear in his stance against slavery; it is a crime that carries the death penalty (Exodus 21:16). With modern slang and sloppy language use, many have difficulty with the concept that words used to actually mean something definite, and were not interchangeable. Servitude, being a servant, is a paid position. Slavery is forced labor without recompense and is equated with stealing someone’s life and thus committing murder. Likewise, the occurrance of events being recorded within Scripture does not lend them any weight or appropriateness. Scripture contains the records of numerous murders, rapes and other atrocities that are against the Lord and his Law. People doing things does not make them appropriate.

I take issue with this statement: “Christians and Jews who follow the Scripture have never been a customer of the shrimpers”.
How can you be so knowledgeable about all your other points and miss the simple fact that the law does not apply to Christians? Jesus abolished the law when he died on the cross. If you‘re an orthodox Jew and don’t believe Christ was the son of God, well, I guess the law still applies to you, and you’re pretty screwed, because you can’t live up to the law.
From my point of view, as a Christian and a gentile, the law is basically a moral compass, nothing more. It’s not binding, and if I choose not to live in a kosher manner, that isn’t a sin.

If you want to have a conversation about this, I’ll be glad to do so. One ground rule though, you’re already starting to be condescending and insulting in your initial post. If you can’t converse civilly, then please go troll someone else.
Now, that being said, no, I do not have an answer for everything. Some things I do have an answer for. Some of my answers are right, and some are wrong. I’m fallible just like anyone else.
The ten commandments are not the same as the mosaic law as described in the Pentateuch. Mosaic law was ceremonial in nature, while the ten commandments are moral in nature. Even though Jesus stated in the sermon on the mount that he did not come to abolish the law, he fulfilled it so we don’t have to.
The law was intentionally written in such a way as to make human imperfection obvious and reveal the need for Jesus. Animal sacrifice was used to atone for the inevitable misstep in the old testament, but Jesus was the final sacrifice on the cross thus eliminating the need for any future animal sacrifice.
Am I suppose to live in a kosher manner because it’s written in the law? Perhaps. I could be wrong. But I do not believe that to be the case. God has not revealed to my heart that eating shrimp is a sin. The holy spirit is here to guide us and convict us when we sin. I’ve been convicted plenty of times, but not for eating shrimp.

Shalom,
Report Post »I am sorry to hear that you take issue with my statement.
As the Lord himself said that the Law was for all generations, and must be applied the same to both Jew and Gentile; as the Messiah himself said that no portion of the Law would pass until heaven and earth passed away; as there are still generations; as heaven and earth is still here; as this is clearly contained in Scripture, I stand by my statement. “Christians and Jews who follow the Scripture have never been a customer of the Shrimpers.”
When the Lord himself says one thing (The Law is for all generations, same Law for Jew and non-Jew), the Messiah says the same thing (until heaven and earth pass away, not one title or jot of the Law shall in any wise pass until all has been fulfilled), and then anyone says the opposite (the Law does not apply to all, the Law has been fulfilled, or the Law just does not apply); so long as there are still generations, so long as the earth is still here, integrity demands that I take the side of the Lord, his Messiah and his Word, against whoever says that it is not so.
Also, I do not think the Lord was trying to make myself and the rest of his people “screwed” as you so colorfully put it; it does not go with what I know of his character and is counter-productive for a Lord desiring reconciliation with his creation.

I appreciate your conviction and your use of scripture to back up your claims, however, I still assert that your claims fly in the face of evidence in the New Testament, and I would like to see you address the points I made in my post to HOLY GHOSTBUSTER.
Next, the Lord says no less than 14 times in Leviticus that he is speaking to the children of Israel. This implies that the Law was never intended for gentiles. When Jesus said that “not one title or jot” shall pass away until all had been fulfilled, he was saying the law will be in full effect until the entire law has been fulfilled, which he did, and abolished the sacrificial system, which was in itself part of the law. He could not abolish part of the law and leave the rest intact. He fulfilled the WHOLE law, and we reap the benefits of that.
