NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — Carrying bibles and singing “Amazing Grace,” a group of pastors knelt on the street outside ground zero on Saturday to protest New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s decision not to include a clergy-led prayer in the ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The group of about 50 pastors and supporters prayed outside the chain-link fence around the site as police and National Guard troops carrying shotguns and combat rifles watched from a distance. Protesters said they felt shut out of Sunday’s memorial service.

“Many of us served here after the attacks, and we know the importance of prayer and the presence of clergy,” said Rev. Rob Schenck, an evangelical pastor. “To exclude them from the ceremony was hurtful.”

Thousands of people have signed a petition asking for a formal prayer at Sunday’s ceremony, but Bloomberg has said it would be impossible to include all the religious leaders who would like to participate. His office says the ceremony will include readings that are “spiritual and personal in nature” and that there will be six minutes of silence for personal reflection or silent prayer.

Bloomberg defended the decision on his weekly radio show Saturday.

“It’s a civil ceremony. There are plenty of opportunities for people to have their religious ceremonies,” Bloomberg said. “Some people don’t want to go to a religious ceremony with another religion. And the number of different religions in this city are really quite amazing.”

City officials are also keen to avoid the religious conflicts that have flared around ground zero in recent years.

Plans to build a mosque in lower Manhattan angered ignited protests last year, and in July an atheist group sued to keep the September 11 Memorial and Museum from exhibiting a cross that was formed when girders broke from the collapsing World Trade Center.

Some leaders, including Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan and the New York Board of Rabbis, have said they agree with Bloomberg’s decision. Worshipers are welcome at dozens of religious services around the city, they say.

But the Southern Baptist Convention, the Catholic League, the Family Research Council and other religious groups say barring clergy from the ceremony ignores the central role that religious groups played during the Sept. 11 attacks and the recovery afterward.

One of the victims of the attacks, Michael Judge, was a fire department chaplain who was killed by a falling body while performing last rites for the dead. A Greek Orthodox church was destroyed.

Churches around the country donated tons of supplies for relief workers, and an Episcopal congregation allowed rescue workers to operate out of St. Paul’s Chapel for months.

Clergy performed thousands of funerals and dozens of memorial services, including an interfaith ceremony at Yankee Stadium. Individual church members pitched in to help feed and support the families of the dead.

“The American public wants prayer at this event,” said Fernando Cabrera, a New York City councilman and pastor of a church in the Bronx. Cabrera said he collected 100,000 names for a petition asking for a formal prayer.

“They could have had different faiths offering prayer, and it would have been a beautiful message to send to the world,” he said.

Passers-by were divided on Bloomberg’s decision.

“I think it’s terrible,” said Sarah Cavanagh, of Bayside, Queens. “It’s Sunday. It‘s God’s day.”

But others felt it was a wise choice, noting that religious hatred helped motivate the Sept. 11 hijackers.

“Religion got us into this problem in the first place, so I think it’s OK,” said Lisa Gianforte, 30, a tourist from Chicago. “A moment of reflection can be a spiritual moment or a nonspiritual moment to each person.”

Not a good idea. Think about it with your head instead of your emotions. We need to be mature about this and not “get back at them” for slighting us. It’s like a couple of kids trying to pick a fight. Let the left show how “little” they are, but we need to take the higher road as Jesus would. Let it alone, please!

It’s hard to believe that the result of religious hatred that killed so many has itself become a testimony for that hatred by denying the inclusion of Christian faith in deference to the very people whose “religion” was the catalyst for this attack!

The paradox and the irony are stifling, and resemble a bad episode of the Twilight Zone. This is not America any more. In a manor of speaking, you could say they have already won the war to islamize America. They have most definitely won the heart and mind of the mayor.

Too much is made in this twin tower incident. This nation is a wimp and can only look at this and whine. It will not/can not do what is necessary to do away with the Islam threat. So it turns to the Look what they did to me. The came into my country club and hurt me. What sick ships americans have become. For me, I would have rounded up all Muslums in this country and sent them somewhere out of this country. But we live in the secret place, protected by the Most High God! I fear NO one..for I know in whom i have believed, put my faith in, in whom i trust…with everything!
Natzi’s cannot defeat, muslims cannot defeat, communists cannot defeat and politically correct progressives can not lay low…“Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world” (system). We can say the truth strongly with no fear..for God will defend protect and handle the light work..(punishing those that work to harm His own)…those who are godless or full of hateful deeds..He is our bullwork, our attorney, our Savior, and our God…Stand for truth and God will Himself rectify…Be bold in the Lord..one with God is an Army! So you see, we ourselves NEVER have to take these matters into our own hands…we just take these matters and place them into HIS hands! We can say a truth and walk in love, being stong in the might of the Lord…He is our Victory! So I know sometimes we feel the pressure to step in and help God out…it is NOT necessary for He is well able to do exceedingly abundant above all we can ask or think! They should praise the Lord every day and ask Him to turn the evi onto the heads of the ungodly people who invaded our country. The we should all demand that all Muslims be deported and bring all our people from Arab countries and forbid them to ever go there again. No Religion? What? There’s a religion accepted down there all right. It’s called Secular Humanism and Washington sanctions it. It worships man’s intellect and teaches there is no absolute right and wrong – whatever your conscience can stand. Forget about “Thou shall not…”, it’s up to you to decide.

What these snakes knowingly ignore is this country runs on the Judean-Christian principles that built it. Of the 55 Founders, ~40 were Clergymen of CHRISTIANITY. They embedded Christian Principles in our laws and it has proven itself in the blessings America has realized. And make no mistake, our DNA is not compatible w/ Paganism, Aetheism, Secular Humanism, and Radical Islam. They do not “Coexist” like that stupid bumper sticker says.

“Separation of Church and State” is NOT in the Constitution. When Jefferson declared it, ‘Church’ meant denomination, like Catholic, Baptist, etc — NOT Christianity!! What he was saying was ‘Separation of (i.e the Catholic Church) and State”. Unless we reclaim those Founding Christian PRINCIPLES, we will continue to fall into an abyss that will destroy us.

Thomas Jefferson was not an idiot and if he wanted to MEAN the separation of the Catholic Church and the State, he would have said it. Many of our founders and those around them escaped from religious persecution, correct? Why would they create a system of government that would be left open to religion to take over government, to become exactly what they escaped from? Sure, many of you hypocrites here would see no problem with them wanting something like that. It’s fine to have a theocracy, as long as it‘s YOUR religion that’s in charge. Thankfully, the founders didn’t allow that to happen, regardless of how hard you want to believe they did.

What’s the matter, does the truth get in the way of what YOU want to believe?

He meant what he said and said what he meant. He said “Church” in our language and context of the day.

He said it in response to a Baptist Church in CT that expressed concern about the First Amendment. They thot it was dangerous that The First Amendment may imply that the church actually got it’s power from the Govt to begin with, as opposed to Inalienable Rights from Our Creator. He of course concurred in his letter about the inalienable rights and went on to concur saying that there was a “wall of separation between the Church and State”. He did not say the State would not use Judean-Christian Principles.

The DNA of our gov’t just so happens to be founded on Judean-Christian Principles. The use of “God” in Gov‘t was challenged at least twice in the 1800’s in the Supreme Courts and upheld because they understood what he meant by ‘church’. Churches are where different denominations congregate around their Principles. The US happens to use Judean-Christian Principles.

So why don’t you just enlighten us, which one of the “Thou Shall Nots…” do you really hate?

Hey AS(S)hole, you do know that for many years after ratification and adoption of the Constitution – including the Bill of Rights – a lot of the individual states actually did have official established churches? I disagree with one of the other posters; the 1st Am. was intended to preclude and official established national church, such as still exists in Britain ( and, for that, matter, in a number of European nations, for which they seem none the worse), where different denominations are legally of secondary status, and the clergy of the established church are a part of the government. If you did not know, bishops of the C of E sit in the House of Lords, and of course the reigning monarch is the temporal head of the church.

Still, it was only after the Civil War, with the 14th Am. and “Incorporation,“ that the phrase ”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” was even applied to the states, and (much later) the original meaning and intent began to be warped into the shape leftards like you would like to see.

Escape from New York is not just a movie – it’s also a state of mind.

A new Marist College poll shows that 36% of New Yorkers under the age of 30 are planning to leave New York within the next five years – and more than a quarter of all adults are planning to bolt the Empire State.

    http://www.urbanskishow.com/b/Young-People-Leaving-New-York-in-Droves/-477955820057321027.html

The New York City suburbs, with their high property values and taxes, are leading the exodus, the poll found.

Of those preparing to leave, 62% cite economic reasons like cost of living, taxes – and a lack of jobs.

Bloomberg is against American 1st Amendment right to Free Speech ane Bloomberg is against Americans 2nd Amendment right to Bear Arms. He’s a billionaire elitist who believes in Big Government (nanny state) and the New World Order. New Yorkers are just stupid, that’s all!!!

Since the GITMO trials couldn’t be held in NY court, Bloomberg decided to make it up to the Feds
by shoving this agenda stained mockery in the faces of American clergy and victims of radicals whose flags he proudly salutes.
The GITMO detainees were to be used to implicate the US in any imaginary crime their lawyers could come up with. But since that didn’t materialize, another way to cower before Islam had to be realized. This is it. This is hand in hand with the administrations agenda.

Don’t be there to protest. Be there to be present for honor and the glory of God, the memory of the fallen, the selfless of those who helped, the grief of the suffering, the compassion and love of people who fight terrorism, and the people who love and care for their fellowman and for freedom. Protest demeans what you do. Be there to pray and praise God despite those who would silence people of faith. Religion didn’t “get us here in the first place”. Extremism did. And never forget there can be a difference between religion and faith. Religion is an expression of faith, not faith itself. The more religions band together, the more clearly and strongly public faith is expressed and the more difficult it is for it to be silenced.

Do not protest. Be present in faith. As the song says, Pray, oh pray. My brothers, my sisters, pray. For the Father is listening when you pray. So pray.

    God Bless Them!!

At the memorial service in NYC, Mayor Bloomberg announced that there will be no prayer. Apparently God has no place at a memorial service. Shortly after the mayor announced this, the White House came out with “talking points,” they are not to mention it was Muslims, they are not to mention that ONLY the United States of America was attacked.

NOW we find out that the FIRST RESPONDERS, the HEROES of 9/11, the brave souls that ran into the burning, collapsing buildings of the World Trade Center, to save the lives of other Americans, ARE NOT INVITED!

THAT’S RIGHT, THERE IS NO ROOM FOR OUR HEROES OR GOD AT THE MEMORIAL SERVICE, ONLY ROOM FOR MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND HIS POLITICAL FRIENDS.

I for one will not be watching some Godless memorial where a bunch of politicians gather to bring notice to themselves when God and the Heroes of that day are not welcome. Please join me in ignoring this farce of a memorial, and instead say a silent prayer for the deceased and survivors of that day.

So, Bloomberg can dance with the devil. Evil hearts and Minds did this deed; not Faith. And NO, I don’t consider Islam a faith; it is a gross perversion of the one truth.

Bloomberg supports Obama’s socialistic, pro-Muslim policies so who would expect anything different from him. New Yorkers should be hanging their heads in shame for electing this man and others like Wiener.

interesting its a 30 year old idiot from Chicago that thinks that religion is what got us into this.

Its disgusting to see that people are so intolerant of religion…and they consider themselves tolerant.

Its the contradiction of the last 20 years, brought on by the “progressive” (read communist) idea of politically correct.

I’m intolerant of people who are intolerant of the faith that founded these United States. And I really don’t give a care who is offended by that.

Im not a stranger passing through a strange land. Christians built this society, and I refuse to be shoved to the side in the land that was blessed by our God.

Emphasis on “WAS” I seem to remember there are Blessings and Curses for keeping His covenants, and we sure don’t seem to be getting those blessings now!

It’s time for the Clergy and their member to be more ,active!!!! Soon you wouldn’t able to mention God in your own homes. It’s time to become more active before we lose our right to pray.

It isn‘t Bloomberg’s memorial service .. I don’t understand why the families are letting him get away with this .. unless they are afraid that they too will be “uninvited”. Bloomberg must not win … way to go CLERGY!
