Pat Robertson: ‘If Enough People Were Praying, [God] Would’ve Intervened’ to Stop the Tornadoes

Pat Robertson: God Would Have Prevented Tornados if Enough People Prayed

Pat Robertson

The violent tornadoes that raged through the Midwest and South over the past week have led to stories of extreme tragedy and loss. But could these horrific events have been prevented?

The Christian Broadcasting Network’s Pat Robertson thinks so. In fact, the well-known figure in both faith and media sectors had plenty to say about the horrific storms. On Monday, he proclaimed, to the dismay of some, that the tornadoes would have been prevented if people had prayed more fervently.

(Related: Donations to Mercury One Help Victims of the Indiana Tornadoes)

“If enough people were praying He would’ve intervened, you could pray, Jesus stilled the storm, you can still storms,” Robertson said on CBN’s “The 700 Club.”

Also, during the discussion he tackled the notion that people shouldn’t blame God for actions they take. For instance, if people know that tornadoes are bound to happen in a specific area, building houses in that vicinity is not the best of ideas.

“Why did you build houses where tornadoes were apt to happen?” Robertson asked. ”If you’re going to build a house in the San Andreas fault, you know there’s going to be a fault. You know the earth is faulted and there are going to be earthquakes. So, don’t blame God for doing something foolish.”

This isn’t the first time Robertson has made comments that have raised eyebrows. He asked last year if mac and cheese is “a black thing,” had some tough criticisms for the GOP presidential candidates and wondered if a crack in the Washington Monument caused by a Washington D.C.-area earthquake last summer was a “sign from the lord.”

As a Christian, I don’t understand why he would say something like this. Has he read Job? Who is he to say what God would or would not have done? God’s Word says we live in a fallen, cursed world due to sin. Disasters happen. Death happens. You can believe in prayer. You can believe in miracles. But you can’t pretend to know everything.

And there once was a little child who rode his big wheel in the street when he wasn’t supposed to, and he begged his daddy not to take his big wheel away for a week. And the child said my daddy don‘t love me because he didn’t hear me, but the next day his friend who wasn’t punished by his own daddy was crushed beneath the wheels of a semi-truck.

AntiChrist sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. (Thessalonians) The temple of God is the body of Christ. The body of Christ has been devalued and depowered and ruined by false teachers and preachers like this man. The false teaching about the “man of sin” and the antiChrist has the body of Christ looking “in the flesh” to Jersalem to see somthing that has already happened in 300 ad. Thus, Christians with all the false teachings, not only from this man but others who stand behind the pulpits Sunday morning will give account on judgement day why they followed these men instead of Jesus. There will be no excuse.
The prayers of one man could have stopped the tornados if it was meant to be that way. The judgment hand is upon the United States. It will depend in 2012 if his hand can be held back with compassion or not. Christians in this country, most of them do not even know the savior. They have injested a false image of God like as Aaron made for the children of Israel. Jesus said, “All those who come before me are thieves and robbers”. I know that in the translation it states, “all those who ever come before me are thieves and robbers” but this is a very wrong deliberate translation.
Pat Robertson is not a man to listen to when it comes to the things of the Lord. God has been calling his people “out” of the disgusting abomination of the system of organized religion.

Understanding your own life, causes and effects, the job of a mom, the job of a father is crucial to understanding God the Father. That’s why the family structure is a big threat to power mongers. And it’s why Jesus said to some he sought to teach: you don’t understand earthly things, and so how could you understand the things of Heaven.

And the deer in the woods says: why did you remove me from my forest. And the Lord said to the deer, because you know not a fire is coming to destroy your woods, and so I put you in another woods. And people may even ask the Lord: why did you hit earth with an asteroid? And the Lord would say: because you know not that the orbit of the earth is changing which will destroy all life anyways.

@MARTINEZ012577 – I’m glad we agree that no one should preach the gospel for money.

1 Corinthians 9:18 What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ WITHOUT CHARGE, that I abuse not my power in the gospel. (Emphasis Added).

1 Peter 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the coversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; NOT FOR FILTHY LUCRE, but of a ready mind. (Emphasis Added).

Matthew 10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: FREELY YE HAVE RECEIVED, FREELY GIVE. (Emphasis Added).

Not making excuses. My grandfather and my wifes grandfather are both ver senile and they say things like that and its like who are you? That’s because a lot of christians do not understand theology, and that God is in control and He does things or lets things happen for His own reasons, which many times we do not understand.

It‘s sad that a member of the church knows more about theology and God’s attributes, than the pastor does, but mnay times that is the case

      Very good analogy Bubba.

Mr. Robertson must think of God as a jeanie in a bottle, that with the right soothsaying hex, you can control the awesome power of God, and make him do your bidding.

God does answer all prayers. In his own time and according to his will. Sometimes the answer is no, and we may never understand why until we meet him in eternity.

Pat Robertson sometimes has decent things to say, but he does this all the time when it comes to tragedy. He said something similar about Haiti after the earthquake. We do not know the mind of God. He has reasons that are beyond are comprehension for some of the things that He does.

Does God sometimes punish nations? Yes. Was he punishing our nation here? Maybe. I’m not a prophet (although I’m fairly decent at interpreting prophecy), so I didn’t get the chance to talk to God and ask him about his motives. Pat Robertson is not a prophet either.

If he was just speculating, then that would be one thing. Maybe God sent the tornadoes to punish us on our policy towards Israel. Maybe not. If we turn to God as a nation then the Bible does say that he will heal our land, BUT the Bible does not say that bad things will never befall us. God sends challenges to people for many reasons. To test them, to make them stronger, to punish them, to prevent a worse calamity, because it’s better for them in the long run, etc. Unless we hear specifically from God, who are we to say exactly why God does something? God is so complex that he could be doing many things to many people. He could be punishing one family and preventing a worse calamity for someone else.

I wish Pat Robertson would stop saying stupid things for which there is very little theological support. Could praying have diverted the tornadoes? Maybe. Would it have? I don’t know, that’s not up for us to decide. Of course, this doesn‘t mean that those who came out of the tragedy shouldn’t be thankful for it, or pray for those loved ones who survived and for those who they lost.

The rules of nature are in place for a reason, and God is not some cosmic bellhop coming down to alter them whenever we put in a call. Additionally, applying morality to natural evil is a fool’s errand, because we never know when or how it is a part of some greater good.

@ENCINOM – Don’t be ridiculous. I’m a conservative and a Christian, and I’m confident that if we paired my logical argumentation up to yours, you would be found wanting.

I can’t defend everything he says but, he is taken out of context alot. It’s not natural for people to ask why God allows things to happen. It’s always been that way. I seem to remember Job questioning God for about 36 chapters until God speaks to him in the last 3. You know what? God NEVER told him why it happened. Don’t believe everything you read in the media. Even the Blaze.

Listen I know him personally. He did not use to talk like this. About 10 years ago he began to slip because he is old. I do not know if you have had an elderly person in your life but they say things without thinking. Not excusing his comments, but he helps millions of people all around the world. He is a good man. I hope you can hear what I am saying. He should not say those things and dont listen to what one man says and lump everyone together. Listen to what Jesus says. Read the writers of the New Testament if you want to know what a follower of Jesus should believe.

      @JAMESTEAPARTYMAC

Give me a break, this guy has been spouting nonsense and prophecies from the 1980s. He is the TEXTBOOK definition of a false prophet yet still has many followers.

“Today, Robertson told the congregation that “This is where God wanted me to be . . . . Here I am in New Hampshire, before a major primary.” He then said, “I assure you that I am going to be the next president of the United States.” [Washington Post, 2/15/1988, via Nexis]”

If Pat Robertson or his close advisers had ANY interest in actually preaching the gospel, they would have him step down and get someone who isn’t a zealot to run their show.

The floods in WA state are due to poor planning and build up of communities, runoff…some of it is man caused…and whatever. LOL

Environmentalist have caused a lot of problems…forest fires due to not removing old dead trees, branches etc…it’s a tender box.

And FYI tornadoes are showing up in places that never had tornadoes. Hey, that’s some cheap property and the cost of living is comfortable…get big insurance like I do…jimho

      Susie –

I would disagree. Use your damn common sense if you have any. There are many parts of America where natural disasters do not hit regularly. As a matter of fact, there are many places where they do not hit at all, and if they do, it is very rare. Pull your head out of your ass and think rationally for a change moron. I am 40 and yet have experienced a natural disaster. And if I do, I will make sure that you are the first to know LOL.

Well I am in my sixties and have already experienced two natural disasters in areas where they were never expected. If anyone has their head shoved deep into a black hole, I contend is sure isn’t me.
Hope your luck holds for another twenty years. But when it doesn’t, don’t call me. “LOL”

If people built houses that could withstand a tornado, most could not afford them or they would be mostly underground. That would make less land available in areas where rock was close to the ground or the water table was very high, like Florida or Appalachia. You can build a small shelter that could survive but retaining the whole house is still a matter of economics. We could also save more lives if everyone had an ambulance follow them everywhere. Maybe there seems to be more people being dislocated because of tornadoes because there are more people. The US population is doubling about every 66 years. Thank God for sprawl. Dense housing and smart growth just makes the disaster worse by making land more expensive and concentrating possible victims in a small area. A house that could survive a tornado might not survive a near miss with an asteroid.

I am a Christian and I believe that Jesus is my savior and died for our sins but I question some of my fellow Christians when they believe and say stuff like this?? Prayer works but I do not think it is up to us on how it works. Our life is not promised here. It is promised when we meet Him..

Sort of. God certainly has the power to do so, and he delights in the prayers of his children, but to say God‘s will is determined by man’s actions is not only incorrect, it’s blasphemous. But he does answer prayer. it’s just not a strict cause and effect relationship. The reason America is slowly losing God’s protection is that as a nation we have drifted from him. George Washington, in his first inaugural address in in NYC dedicted this nation to God and his laws and said that judgement would come upon us if we drifted from that. Then he and the Congress walked around the corner and up the street to St Paul’s, which overlooks the WTC site, and reconfirmed it. Funny how the first breach in God’s protection is so instructive yet so ignored.

And you have to have specific prayers ones that desire to be in God’s will, not what man wants…yes miracles do happen but I‘ve been taught to be specific prayer and ask to be God’s will not mine.

I’ve seen miracles happen, but not the way I thought and prayed for. LOL You gotta be careful what you pray for or you might get what you wanted… :)

Stop cherry-picking Pat Robertson, you guys. You could find statements made by Billy Graham that, taken out of the greater context, would sound silly to a lost and dying world. Pat Robertson has only minimal audience in the evangelical world, while his station holds a bit more interest to mainstream Christians. Based on his premise, if enough people had prayed, he would have been elected President. Leave Pat alone.

I am a deist when it comes to my believes. Most of the replies I get from people tell me I need more Jesus in my life. Most of the posts on here are centered around the world needing more Jesus, but look what happens when you get too much Jesus. This man has about as much believe in Jesus is one person can have. He is nuts.

does he have as much belief as one person can have? is he the best example? my mother-in-law is a rock with her beliefs. i think more so than mr. robertson. but she does not have a tv show and an audience to listen to her other than our family. just saying exposure does not constitute level of belief. just means he is a charismatic speaker and has gained an audience.

Nah, you are wrong…the Christian is asked to pray in God’s will…not mans desires of God…cause it is God who is doing the works and all we desire is a relationship with God and join Him in His good works…If not then we fail…go read Job, the book in the bible entitled, “Job”…a man of God but look at his life.

Come on. If you were a “real Christian,” you’d know that there are differences in thought regarding issues like this. While I might disagree with a Word of Faith teacher theologically, I still believe that they are likely Christians. Pat Robertson is a Christian who has statements cherry-picked by the media to make him look extreme. He is still concerned primarily about reaching the lost for Christ…more than many mainline Protestant groups today.
