Pat Robertson: ‘What Is This ’Mac & Cheese?’ Is That a Black Thing?’

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson tends to find himself in the limelight for making comments that some find offensive, curious or entertaining (sometimes, a combination of the three). Today, on CBN’s “The 700 Club,” Robertson asked co-host Kristi Watts, “What is this ‘mac and cheese?’ Is that a black thing?”

The question, which seems even more bizarre without context, was posed after an interview between Watts and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was aired. During the interview, Watts asked Rice, “What’s that one thing at Thanksgiving you just have to have?” Rice’s answer? Mac and cheese. Watts agreed that it is her favorite holiday dish as well.

Mediaite has more:

A confused Robertson, who grew up in Lexington, Virginia, acted like he had never heard of the culinary dish, a popular American staple for generations and absent-mindedly singled out the meal as a food reserved for blacks. [...]

“It is a black thing, Pat!” exclaimed Watts. “Listen! And you guys! The world needs to get on board with macaroni and cheese. Seriously, I just– Christmas and Thanksgiving, we have to have macaroni and cheese and it just trips me out that you just don’t. ”

“I don’t and I have never!” the televangelist conceded.

Watch the interaction, below:

The only person I know who wants mac and cheese on Thanksgiving is my son (who unrelated is handicapped), but he wants it every day, so I don’t think that counts. And he wants my MIL’s homemade in the oven mac and cheese, not the box kind (which we can‘t have anyway because it’s not gluten free…we usually buy it, use only the cheese pouch and save the noodles for my husband to have tuna shellroni).

Same here. Once in a while someone will make some weird, experimental baked macaroni and cheese, though I can‘t remember how many years it’s been since we had it at Thanksgiving and/or Christmas.

If it‘s a regular thing at black folks’ Thanksgiving meals, then it may very well be a “black thing”. These things exists. Stating as much ain’t racist.

TRI-OX, I’m with you on this one. In my entire life, I’ve never had mac and cheese on a holiday. I grew up dirt poor, but we never had mac and cheese on a holiday. We had it on regular days.
I‘ve never been served mac and cheese at anyone’s home, on a holiday. I know the homemade kind is pretty good stuff, but I don’t want it on a holiday.

Maybe Pat Robertson was thrown off a little, by it being called mac and cheese. Everyone I know calls it macaroni and cheese.

OK I had to sign in for this. The mac and cheez is a put down on Americas reason for Thanksgiving. Yes Thanksgiving is a White Protestant Christian celebration as we created America.

Mac and cheese are daily suppliments and not the main course in American homes that are Patriots. Now we are talking about being Patriotic indeed. Never heard of such foolishness of having such a mundane food on what is really a Holy day for American Christian Patriots. stuff your mac&chez

At my Thanksgiving dinner this year, we are going to have three black people, three white people, and three black/white biracial (little) people. We’ll be having turkey, thank you. Also, in our family we have a veteran and a former military spouse (that would be me, the veteran, and my husband is the former military spouse). VERY common in the south. home made in the oven with elbow noodles and various types of cheese melted in. some times they (southerners, regardless of color) put a crust on top. I don’t care much for it, but maybe because i’m a transplanted yankee. If it aint Velveeta, it aint mac & cheese as far as I’m concerned. but very high in carbs so it‘s no wonder Pat wouldn’t have it at his table.

Collard greens, black eyed peas, sweet potato pie, okra, etc…. (There’s something to be said for having your own garden.) When it comes to mack & cheese do it right, not the cheap out of the box crap, homemade with milk & cream and then baked until brown on top.

I guess she was surprised that her young men were devouring such massive helpings of mac and chesse that the huge pan she had made was not going to be enough. I just nodded and agreed, never letting on that it sounded so odd to me that they were having mac and cheese on Thanksgiving. What’s a few hundred more calories on Thanksgiving?!

    A quote I tend to agree with…

“Someone needs to say this plainly: The faith healers and health-and-wealth preachers who dominate religious television are shameless frauds. Their message is not the true gospel of Jesus Christ. There is nothing spiritual or miraculous about their on-stage chicanery. It is all a devious ruse designed to take advantage of desperate people. They are not godly ministers but greedy impostors who corrupt the Word of God for money’s sake. They are not real pastors who shepherd the flock of God but hirelings whose only design is to fleece the sheep. Their love of money is glaringly obvious in what they say as well as how they live. They claim to possess great spiritual power, but in reality they are rank materialists and enemies of everything holy.”

Of all the stupid things people say on tv and you pick on Pat Robertson? He may not be socially acceptable (and he doesn’t care) but he is right on with spiritual things. Obviously he didn’t mean it racially since he had a black woman sitting right next to him. DUH!

I lost my respect for Pat when he appeared with the phony ‘Reverend’ Al Sharpton in the promotion of man-made climate change,in a TV commercial.Pat should know better.God in his infinite wisdom made nature much more resilient than what any mere man can do to it.Especially in this age.

To not know what MAC & CHEESE is to Americans is like not knowing what apple pie is.The Alzheimers must be settling in.

Oh come on, people! He’s asking whether having mac & cheese for Thanksgiving is a black thing. Don’t know about you but mac & cheese isn‘t on my family’s Thanksgiving menu and I’ve never had it at friends. So it’s a reasonable question – at least I think it is.

      Yes…it WAS a reasonable question

Given the fact that both Watts and Rice enjoy Mac & Cheese for Thanksgiving,
unusual for standard Thanksgiving fare-even at restaurants,

it is only natural to think that it could be a tradition of Black Americans.
I would have asked the same question….!

Secretly, I bet the media was wondering the same thing.
For certain, while they pounced on Robertson,
for sure…they would have ignored any inquiry by me!

Well, I LOVE macaroni and cheese (the baked, homemade kind) and I NEVER would have thought to serve it at Thanksgiving. (I’m quite white, with lots of freckles)
But hey, tomorrow is the feast. Now that I’ve thought of it, maybe mac & cheese would be pretty good!!

I make homemade Mac and Cheese allot but I have never served it on Thanksgiving, although I wouldn’t mind. We all love it. It is just another silly comment that has been made into a racist statement.

Ha! So much discussion about this and Smartgirl was exactly right! Everybody eats mac and cheese at one time or other, but it‘s never been on my Thanksgiving dinner table and wouldn’t occur to me to make it. Born and raised in South Dakota, lived in the south for 40 years … and I‘ve never seen mac and cheese on any of these fine cooks’ tables. But then most people haven‘t seen sauerkraut on their holiday tables either and our family would riot if we didn’t serve that along with the turkey, duck and pheasant.

I think he means is it a Black tradition to eat it especially at Thanksgiving, as it might be for Italians to have ziti or Mexicans to have tamales, or Chinese eggrolls at Thanksgiving or Cajuns to have one of those Chicken-inside-a-Duck-inside-a-Turkey feasts. Harmless question, move on and have a Happy Thanksgiving one and all.

This is where the BLAZE acts no better than a liberal grocery store rag. …The token weekly hit piece mocking Pat Robertson. Pat has heard of Mac & Cheese…He’s just never heard of anyone featuring it on the holiday menue . It cheapens the occation to serve the epitomy of poverty food. OK your poor , you lived in the ghetto, but do you have to serve balony sandwiches and Bumblebee tuna on Christmas? You can’t save up $10 for a real ham, or get a turkey at the food bank ?

Hush, you loon. You’re the ghetto trash if you associate Mac & Cheese with Kraft out of a box, and have never had the homemade version. There are 3 star restaurants that serve Mac & Cheese, and even making it at home, with the cost of good cheese, probably cost more than that propellor hat of yours. You haven‘t lived until you’ve had Mac & gruyere Cheese, with bacon,or pears, and bread crumbs on top.

This man has lost touch with his mind. Please remove him from the air before he loses any good will he has gained in his life. I’ve never watched him before, but I get to hear about it when he says something silly. I think the time to remove him was when he suggested this year that it’s OK to divorce your spouse if they have alshimers (sp?) and you want to date others. This is just sad.

I grew up eating Kraft Mac and Cheese as a white honky kid, it is not a black thing. Pat is dumb and so is this lady for claiming it as a black culinary delight. Kraft is American as apple pie, it knows no color. Next.

Sorry, they aren’t talking about “processed cheese” and “dead noodles”! And “Kraft” mac and cheese has only become an “American staple” when women started going out of the home to work.

What is being discussed here is homemade, three or more cheese, baked macaronia and cheese, which was served at holidays because that is what saved money went toward–real cheese, real milk and real butter!
