Paul Ryan’s 78-Year-Old Mom Joins Him on the Campaign Trail for Medicare Talk

THE VILLAGES, Fla. (The Blaze/AP) — Paul Ryan, a champion of changing Medicare, spoke as a passionate defender Saturday, promising seniors that he and Mitt Romney would save it, and he introduced his mother to voters to drive home the point that the health program “was there for our family” and “we have to keep that guarantee.”

The vice presidential hopeful tried to strike a careful balance on a dicey subject in his speech at a sprawling retirement community. The Republican ticket has come under withering criticism from President Barack Obama for Ryan’s proposals in Congress to overhaul Medicare. Ryan says Medicare will be protected for people in and near retirement, and he wants to see younger generations offered alternatives to the entitlement.

Obama, campaigning in New Hampshire, was casting the choice Election Day as one between two fundamentally different approaches to the government’s responsibility to its citizens and who pays the bill. In an excerpt of his planned remarks, he criticized Romney’s tax proposals as “trickle-down fairy dust” that has failed to grow the economy in the past and won’t work now.

Ryan took the stage in The Villages with his mother Betty Ryan Douglas, 78, while Romney scheduled a series of fundraisers in Massachusetts. The Wisconsin congressman said he saw Medicare’s benefits firsthand as a child when his grandmother, with Alzheimer’s, moved in with his family. “My mom and I were her two primary caregivers,” Ryan said before shifting to his mother and the promise of Medicare for her.

“She planned her retirement around this promise,” Ryan said. “That’s a promise we have to keep.”

“It’s not just a program,” he added. “It’s what my mom relies on.”

He accused Obama of undermining Medicare by cutting billions from the program to devote to expanded coverage under his health care law, and asserted: “We want this debate. We need this debate. And we are going to win this debate.

Older Americans have often resisted changes in Medicare, the federal health care insurance program for people 65 and older, and for the disabled.

The Romney-Ryan ticket is betting that voters‘ worries about federal deficits and the Democrats’ health care overhaul have opened the door for a robust debate on the solvency of Medicare, one of the government’s most popular and costliest programs.

In the week since Romney announced Ryan as his running mate, Medicare and Social Security have appeared as a driving issue. Florida, Pennsylvania and Iowa are among the top five states in the percentage of people 65 and over, and all three are closely contested this election.

I just got done with listening to obama at a stop in New Hamshire. I also listened to Ryan speech in Florida. Ryan gives us hope and independence where barry gives us nothing. Everything barry said can and should be easily picked apart. Most if not all were lies and deceptions – par for this guy.

What I found interesting was the people. I’m willing to wager they were bussed in union folk mixed in with some really diehard dems. I cannot believe that after 3 and a half years people still cannot see through this guy. Has this country dumbed itself down to a point that people are so easily blind ignorant of the truths?

This guy is a failure and a liar and his failing has damaged this country to a point where all of our rights are in danger of being taken away. He is a socialist and if I recall, socialist programs have never contributed to the people. I want this man voted out of office because if he isn’t, we all loose.

Of course Obama cut Medicare… It was in the News perpetually prior to getting it jammed down the American gullet. It was the only way that the Dems could get all of their jack-rabbits on the obamacare flat-bed – by making this abomination of a bill look “deficit neutral.” With a little financial prestidigitation BHO moved a huge chunk from Medicare into his obamacare manure pile and violla! …”Deficit Neutral!”

Do you not understand that the plan R & R are proposing is to give us the right to choose for ourselves. We will have a choice to keep with the current system for ourselves or have the system that Congress enjoys with choices which will bring competion which in turn will bring cost down. And eventually will replace the inferior system of medicare. With Obamacare a panel of 12 or 15 people who have not been elected will choose if you get care or not. Medicare is in fact wealth redistribution and socialism. Don’t protect and strengthen it, any fool can trace the cost rise in all health care along the same curve as the implementation of Medicare/Medicaid. I recall visits to the doctor’s offices where my grandmother payed by cheque, a low amount, and hospital visits bankrupted nobody. They did cut $7 billion but the already low reimbursements to doctors and hospitals will be cut and the Obama people act like that will not affect seniors and only affect those receiving the reimbursements.
Since some doctors are already dumping medicare patients because their costs are not covered by the already low reimbursements it will only get worse……….to the point where finding a doctor to treat them will definitely be an issue. Even though they act like the seniors won’t be hurt directly they will be indirectly. It is rhetoric and words and tricks to fool the public once again……..just like all the BS they were spouting to get obamacare passed in the first place. Verse of Treason.. You are either: uninformed, blatantly liberal or dumb as a box of rocks. Here is a transcript of the interview Obama gave back in 2009 after passage of the bill:

“TAPPER: One of the concerns about health care and how you pay for it — one third of the funding comes from cuts to Medicare.
      PRESIDENT OBAMA: “Right.
TAPPER: A lot of times, as you know, what happens in Congress is somebody will do something bold and then Congress, close to election season, will undo it.
      OBAMA: Right.
TAPPER: You saw that with the ‘doc fix.’
      OBAMA: Right.
TAPPER: Are you willing to pledge that whatever cuts in Medicare are being made to fund health insurance, one third of it, that you will veto anything that tries to undo that?
OBAMA: Yes. I actually have said that it is important for us to make sure this thing is deficit neutral, without tricks. I said I wouldn’t sign a bill that didn’t meet that criteria.”

So which is it? Uninformed, blatantly liberal or dumb?

“VERCE”OFREASON, How is it reasonable to state “Obama cut zero money pertaining to recipients care.” when the AHCA cut 718 billion from the medicare program? Are you accepting the false promise that that much can be saved by reducing fraud and waste? That means that you also believe that there has been that much fraud and waste in the administration of the program and that any additional effort to reduce fraud and waste will not cost a great deal of money. Much of the cost of this additional cost will fall on the service providers whether they as individuals are part of the problem or not. Many service providers are currently refusing to take on new medicare clients because they simply cannot afford to serve them. It is reasonable to assume that this trend would continue to increase as the cost of serving this group increases.

We all know it;s unsustainable as it is now. With Ryan addressing the plans features that it will only affect citizens under age 55 is the great “changer.” I believe that costs of anything drop with free markets.. Those younger folks will be able to buy heath coverage across state lines. Just like auto insurance. They will be able to shop and compare coverages to find deals that best suit them. Providers will also have to compete for the business. That too will lower provider cost. Free markets fix everything to the benefit of the consumers. Non union providers will compete with SEIU nurses.
      These changes will save Medicare.

Obama’s ingenious plan will cut $700+ billion from doctor and hospital reimbursements. They also want to change how doctors get paid. A specialist will be paid like your family doctor. If you have cancer do you want your family doctor to treat you instead of an Oncologist? I sure don’t. Both of my doctors plan to retire early if and when this goes into effect. Then we have an issue of finding another doctor because the doctors have already started refusing care for new medicare patients.

Not in so many words. Very cleaver to fool people who don’t go past slogans. Setting up 15 person medical rationing panels in seven? districts the DNC SAYS will “save” $700 billion (over ? years). Actually, it will just transfer it from an 80 year old smoker with lung cancer or an 85 year old with advanced heart disease due to overeating to a 16 year old who needs a transplant to live. That’s why they have been nicknamed “death panels”. This IS in the actual law – read it all instead of listening to what Obama SAYS. I’ve read the entire law. 90% isn’t even about health. It’s about (more) “people control”. Doctors have been interviewed who are to the Left and ASKED how they would ration X billions if appointed to one of these panels. They ALL responded they would favor those with the most “useful to others” years remaining. Seniors (like me now – 65) we’ll be on our own! Those who trust those who have set us up for a complete collapse as a country deserve what they‘ll get I’m sorry to say. But those who use common sense and consider what has REALLY happened since 2008 and what is coming with four more years of “more of the same” will be forced to endure the same ever increasing Hell on Earth. I don’t debate slogans and emotions so please – if anyone responds, please only state complete non-spun (true) facts.

Does he tell her it‘s all an act and he doesn’t really believe it; that it’s just what a minority of people want to hear? And it doesn’t have a chance of coming true?

We will have a choice to keep with the current system or have the system that Congress enjoys with choices which will bring competion which in turn will bring cost down. And eventually will replace the inferior system of medicare. With Obamacare a panel of 12 or 15 people who have not been elected will choose if you get care or not. Can we please restore liberty and not a government funding of healthcare entitlement?

Where does the Federal government get the authority to have a Medicare program?

Makes me wonder if Paul Ryan is for the constitution or redistribution on wealth and government control of healthcare?

Instead of arguing over what “flavor” or type of government healthcare we are for, can we please get a candidate that will argue for the end of government healthcare and freedom and liberty to have free market health care? Can we get a plan to eliminate government health care?

on http://www.usdebtclock.org it shows the current estimated unfunded liability for Medicare is $83,383,150,574,399. That liability increases by $1M every 7 seconds. Really… you are going to fund and save that program??? really? Current Federal debt is $15 trillion and somehow, you want me to believe that the Federal Government will fund Medicare. Are you are being honest with us Mr Ryan? Sure Obama may be worse; however, that does not therefore make you right!

Excuse me, but retired healthcare was on the table as a benifit when my husband decided to re-inlist the first time and the rest of the times until 26 years. It was a promise, period. Part of the retirement package. They have twisted it to be part medicare and part tricare for life. Without it, I as a widow would have no healthcare. Don‘t tell me it wasn’t legal, it was contracted. A promise from this nation we would be taken care of for the months, adding up to years, he spent away from us, the long, long hours when he was home, the devotion to duty he believed in. My husband was a patriot, loved this country and served it with his whole being. He, we, believed in the promises, even though now they are trying to really screw the younger generation of patriots and make them pay much more. (I pay, too). Other people were promised medicare by our government, so they should just say the hell with them too? It needs revamping, no one denies that, but a promise made should be a promise kept.

The whole thing goes bellyup in about 11 years and who do you think can bail it out? The snakeoil salesman is Obama, promising stuff he has no way to deliver. The old people have already counted on these benefits and can’t be put on the street, although Obama’s panel will ration them to death. Obamacare was about power and not about healthcare for uninsured. Everyone was already treated when they went to the hospital. Redistributing extra benefits (or the promise or idea of it) to the uninsured or the poor by squeezing out enbursements for senior care is just going to be another wasteful, bloated program. People need to pay for their own preventative care. Then Obama will dump all the illegals costs onto the already stretched funds. This was about buying votes with rhetoric for stuff no one is ever to get. The healthcare of obamacare is not going to be the same healthcare people have now. More phony hope but there will be a change….just for worse!

When Obama was asked what the solution was to Medicare running out of money, he said – “Obama Care. ” Obama intends to completely dismantle Medicare, so that EVERYONE has the exact, same healthcare. It won’t matter anymore if someone worked their entire life and paid into it, year after year.

Thing is, working people will still have to pay into it, and they’ll get the same care as someone who never worked a day in their life.

I see a lot of them at various charities around town and maybe all they can do is sit in their wheelchairs and act as greeters, but they are contributing to making society better.

So take your argument for euthanasia somewhere else.

LUUUUUUUUUKE . . . “Federal Civil Rights are not constitutionally based.” Did you just say that? I think you just said that. Didn’t you? Don’t back down now just because it is a boldly nonsensical claim on its face. Everybody has the right to be as dumb as they please, and that means you too.

Let her rip, Luke. Nobody’s listening. (By the way, you better tell all your conservative amigos who are always taking credit for the Civl Rights Act that they usurped the Constitution.)

Here’s a tip: When you do this next time, START painting in the corner and work your way toward the door.

There are a lot of fools out there that don’t know that Medicare & Medicaid
      are two separate programs.

MediCARE is the program hard-working citizens paid into all of their lives
to rely on in their retirement years.

MediCAID is the entitlement program that grants all sorts of health goodies
and aid to mostly those, ILLegal & Lazy, who scheme to take advantage of a system.

Oblameo’s putrid policy, ObamaCare robs Peter, “MediCARE” to pay Paul “MediCAID” !

Of course, this miserable administration wants people to confuse & interchange
      one with the other-
it keeps them from being accountable to all the Americans
who deserve MediCARE & it gets them gimmee’ more votes from all the riff-raff…
      deserving of NOTHING !

Remember that goofy “99%” phrase they threw around for months ? It’s the same bad / lying math involved in all Democrat economic plans. Like The “ Affordable ” Housing Act . ” Affordable ? ” What a hoot ! Blew up the economy and every Democrat involved got off scott free ! Now they are pushing the next economic time bomb : The Affordable HealthCare Act. Just another suicidal economic mess brought to by our Redistributing Democrats who will promise a voter anything and then Blame someone else when things blow up.

The most common argument is that some people are a drain on society and a waste of resources that we can’t afford to support.

That is the argument Diane TX used in her post.

I think it was brilliant to associate himself with his Mom since she is a part of that retirement community. That doesn’t make him a woose. It simply shows his intellegence. I agree some of the Republicans are Woose’s but not Paul Ryan. He has the courage to stand up to Obama on Obamacare and the budget. Paul Ryan may be a brainiac but he is no woose!

The Obama Democrats have made their appeals to the young: expanding their medical coverage , offering to absolve student loans, opening the borders, easing voting requirements, pushing gay marriage, undermining the military by enticing young people out to get free higher education, stirring up the young with their ” hate the rich / old people / capitalism ” rhetoric . It is very obvious that in addition to race and class , the Obama people have also tried to create an age division in this country. The Obama people are trying “to change” things which the young do not understand will NOT work fiscally and which will also cause more strife and chaos for the country. The Obama people are economic shell game artists and radical dividers of the American people. Medicare is a classic example of their shell game.
