Paul Says He Favors an Immigration Policy That Doesn‘t Rely on ’Barbed-Wire Fences and Guns’

Ron Paul Talks Immigration in Nevada

(The Blaze/AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul outlined his views on immigration Wednesday, saying he favors a compassionate policy that doesn’t rely on “barbed-wire fences and guns on our border.”

Paul spoke to several dozen people organized by Hispanics in Politics, Nevada’s oldest Hispanic community group. The Texas congressman has scheduled several days of campaigning in Nevada before the state’s caucuses Saturday.

Paul went into much greater detail on immigration policy than he has at most of his campaign stops. He typically steers clear of discussing rights for specific groups of people, insisting that his libertarian-leaning views apply to everyone as individuals.

But in Nevada, which is 26 percent Hispanic, Paul outlined an immigration policy far outside the Republican mainstream.

Paul blasted politicians who blame immigrants for causing the country’s economic problems. He compared the situation to Nazi Germany’s targeting of Jews in the 1930s.

“When things go badly, individuals look for scapegoats,” Paul said. “Hispanics, the immigrants who have come in, are being used as scapegoats.”

Paul said he doesn’t support illegal immigration and said people who break the law should be punished. But he said he opposes any effort to round people up and ship them away.

“If an individual is found to be breaking the law, serious consideration should be given for them to return. But I would think 99 percent of people who come here come because they believe in the American dream,” Paul said to applause.

Paul decried a punitive border policy, which said offended his belief in individual liberty.

“The one thing I have resisted and condemned: I do not believe that barbed-wire fences and guns on our border will solve any of our problems,” he said.

Paul also said he was against laws that require immigrants to carry proof of legal status. He says he doesn’t want to live in a country where people are required to carry identity papers.

“You say, `Well, this is only for illegals.‘ That’s a bunch of baloney,” Paul said. “How do you sort out illegals from legals? Unless you put papers and identification on everybody.”

Hispanics in Nevada have favored Democrats over Republicans in recent election years – a full 74 percent of Hispanics supported President Barack Obama in 2008 over GOP rival John McCain.

But Fernando Cortes, Paul’s director of Hispanic outreach in Nevada, said many Hispanic voters had shown interest in Paul’s message.

“They’re always pandered to by the left and ignored by the right,” Cortes said of Hispanic voters. “They’re very motivated by the wanting of freedom back and a sound economy.”

Are you talking about the “barbed wire and guns”? If you watch the debates, he talks all the time about bringing the troops home to patrol the border. I havent seen this video so I dont have his context. When he says ‘barbed wire and guns”, he is probably talking more about a military zone like they have at north/south korea – that is a little excessive. However, that sort of fence is what some other republicans always talk about and never get it done

It is like I have said before, he is a politician.

He wooed the Libertarians in ‘88, then dumped them

He cajoled the old south racists, with the news letters, then dumped them

He cajoled the 911/FEMA camp conspiricy theorists, with his talk of re-opening the investigation, appearences on Alex Jones’ show then dumped them (off the wall)

He cajoled the close down the border and ship them all back crowd

and now when it is expedient for his election, he tells a crowd of hispanics what they want to hear.

      He is just another politician.

      @naed gets it.
We already require papers of everyone. Everyone who enters our country is required to have their visa with them (or green card, etc). That system is designed for everyone who enters our country. It does not address people entering illegally, because you are not ALLOWED to enter our country illegally. So, if they enter LEGALLY, it is already taken care of. By NOT requiring papers of illegal immigrants, we are treating them better than LEGAL immigrants, whom nobody complains about.
NO. NO SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR CRIMINALS. (and don’t start claiming they are not criminals. Just because you have not been convicted of rape, doesn‘t mean you aren’t a rapist. Policy is NOT law.)

How Tragic RP does not believe in Concentration camps
The Transfer Agreement (which promoted the emigration of German Jews to Palestine) implemented in 1933 and abandoned at the beginning of WWII is an important example of the cooperation between Hitler’s Germany and international Zionism. [11] Through this agreement, Hitler‘s Third Reich did more than any other government during the 1930’s to support Jewish development in Palestine and further the Zionist goals.

Hitler and the Zionists had a common goal:Â to create a world Jewish Ghetto as a solution to the Jewish Question.
      The Transfer Agreement

The Zionist so-called “World Jewish Congress” declared war on the country of Germany,[12] [13] knowing that it would affect their Jewish brothers residing in that country who would be left without protection. When others tried to help them escape to other countries, the Zionist movement took actions which caused those countries to lock their doors to Jewish immigration (read more in the books, “Perfidy” and “Min Hametzer”). As a result of the Zionist influence five ships of Jewish refugees from Germany arriving in the United States were turned back to the gas chambers. http://www.jewsagainstzionism.com/antisemitism/nazisupport.cfm#_ftnref6

I was almost going to vote for Ron Paul. His position about bringing the troops home and guarding our own borders seemed to make sense to me.

Now he states, “The one thing I have resisted and condemned: I do not believe that barbed-wire fences and guns on our border will solve any of our problems.”

Okay troops on the border mean guns on the border.

His position then has to be interpreted by staunch followers with a kind of “No, no, no. That is not what he meant. He meant this…..

I get the position that national identity papers already exist for legal immigrants and if you don’t have them when asked you must be illegal.

Well his position is to bring the troops home for controling the border in the SHORT TERM. Long term there are better solutions and the goal is not to have these troops.

The problem with illegal immigration is that they use our social welfare system. If we get rid of the system for both Americans and immigrants then there is no problem. The ones that come to work are not an issue. I don’t mind paying immigrants $2 an hour to mow my lawn if it helps them. More money in our pockets to buy things and no Americanized workers would take this job.

What a lot of people don’t understand is that the hard line Libertarian philosohy of immigration is that there should be no borders at all. Let that sink in.

People have freedom to decide their own destiny, therefore they have the freedom to choose to live where they wish (just ask John Stossel). Paul is a libertarian, and much more hardline than I think he lets on these days.

What part of the law do you not understand? Federal troops, those of the active and reserve components, can not patrol the border. They are prohibited from doing so. As a former MP who has worked in that region (thank God for a short time) we recieved briefings by both JAG and BP. Posse Commitatus prevents federal troops from patroling the border in the manner currently done by the Border Patrol. We could observe and report ONLY!

National Guard is a different ball game some what. But if on Title 10 orders they have been federalized and would fall under PC also.

Basically, if your gonna tout the rule of law you had better know it.

The Hispanic population of Nevada, at least the illegal population, moved out when jobs became scarce. When Alabama was allowed to put much of their tough illegal immigration reform law into effect, the same thing happened. As an added benefit, the unemployment rate dropped dramatically. There seems to be an easy solution set to the problem without resorting to mass round ups and deportations.

If you prevent illegal immigrants from receiving any benefits, like welfare, food stamps, education and the like, and withhold all federal funding from any state, county, city, town or other entity that provides aid, or driver licenses, etc., it will become more and more difficult for illegals to live here. Of course, you need to go after employers who hire illegals, and make it too risky or unprofitable for them to do so. First offense should be a substantial fine that would hurt, like $50,000 for each illegal they employ. A second offense could be a mandatory jail term and $250,000 fine for each illegal, etc.

I haven’t heard any candidate express a realistic immigration policy. They are either too soft or just too unrealistic. That’s what happens when you have politicians who prefer to pander rather than govern!

That‘s exactly what Ron Paul’s stance is. Remove the benefits for illegal aliens and they have no incentive to live here. If they can’t receive welfare, drivers license or get a job, how would they survive here? They can’t. Government policy is what keeps illegal immigration thriving. Cut off their nectar and it’ll reduce the problem. No barb wired fence or extra guns needed.

Dr Paul wants to return to the Constitution. That menas we don’t feed, educate and comfort the illegals in this country. They break the law and they need to be punished. That does not mean cruelty. It means to send them back home. that is punishment enough I would think.

WE do not let them stay here. Dr Paul is not suggesting that at all. If we would just enforce the laws and turn off the freebies this all would end pretty quickly.

Exactly…remove the incentives. In North Carolina, where I live, they raided a chicken processing plant which employed illegal aliens. Afterwards, citizens who had been working at the Wal-Mart for about $5/hour went to work at the plant for $7/hour. This totally disproved the argument that illegals only take the jobs citizens don’t want. BTW, I worked for INS and the term “alien” is used there. All persons entering the United States from other countries receive an “alien number” or “a-number”.

I hope everyone is aware, that when the Soviet Union fell, several of their smaller battlefield nukes went missing, and are still unaccounted for to this day…..it isn’t difficult to guess where at least one of them may have ended up. There might be something more than drugs coming across our border in a backpack. But I guess, if a US city disappears in a mushroom cloud, maybe more people in this nation will wake up and take things seriously.

Interesting when they found out it was military weapons grade no? The kind only the US military can produce… Mmmmhm.

Enforce the laws on the books, no new laws, enforce residency status checks at voting booths and for all jobs, bingo.

No need to spend money on gas deporting, let them walk back across the southern Arizona desert in the summer, again, except headed south :) Ron Paul 2012.

I am a Libertarian also, but I have Conservative views on some issues such as Foreign policy. I don’t understand Dr. Paul’s position on the illegal immigrant issue. No one suggests taking illegals to the gas chambers, but how exactly do you solve the problem of millions of people being in this country who have no legal right to be here? I don’t think that the concept of individual liberty, a mainstay of the Libertarian philosophy, applies to violating the right of a sovereign country to keep you out. You have no business here if you are not a citizen. I would like for a televised debate with the candidates to explore exactly what he would do to maintain our sovereignty, but execute a “Compassionate” solution to rectify the lawbreaking activities of illegals. By lawbreaking I mean the act of being in the USA without legal right to do so. I think I may have missed something in the article, or I don’t understand the Libertarian ideals like I thought I did.

The problem I have with people bashing Paul’s views on “illegal” immigration is that these same people actually believe our government has done everything it could have done to prevent it. I mean, it’s a complete joke.

We have an illegal immigration problem because the majority of people in this country don’t care.

Newt worst of all with his new democratically elected citizens brought to you by your local community organizers.. ugh, ‘immigration reform’ by romney and santorum with all their new laws, ditto. Only Paul is saying enforce the laws we have now and they’ll self-deport, no need to build a wall and if problems on the borders include terrorists, put the military on the border, otherwise, let the illegals pay to make their own way back home; they paid to get up here, let them pay the coyotes to get back. Lets see all the local communities put water jugs out in the desert so they don’t die of thirst going back home.

It‘s just too bad he’s like this re borders, some of the foreign policy (erroneous ideas about Islam and why Muslims do what they do). I agree with most of the other stuff he says, as probably a good portion of the rest of us. He seems to be utterly naive and not understand human nature re these issues and it‘s obvious he hasn’t researched Islam – which is strange since I would think if he was going to make this one of his main beliefs, that he would have researched it. He was probably a great doctor & has the intellect, but it just seems when it comes to this kind of stuff, he goes off into “liberal” La La Land and unfortunately it’s a very, very important issue to know. I’d love him to be Sec. of Treasury though !

If you have paid attention, he has provided a lot of ideas that he is for
      1. getting rid of federal entitlements that incentivize illegals to come. Such as free healthcare and education
      2. Let each state decide what the best policy is for policing the border
      3. Not rely on a physical fence (expensive and practically impossible to build) and instead bring the troops home and use their resources to patrol border (aerial and on the ground)
      4. Increase legal immigration. The reason we have so many illegals is that our government has severely restricted the amount of work visas. Better for immigrants to come legally than illegally

It has been a federal responsibility from the begining, and how well have they done? How well did george bush handle the border during his 8 years? If George ‘national security’ Bush could not handle the border, what makes you think another president will?

I can see reason might not work with you. Our border is vast and the terrain difficult. A fence across the entire border is costly and that is why they will never build one. But like I said, you can have a virtual fence using patrols/drones/etc. It can easily be done if we bring some of the troops home from afganistan. I dont know what your objection is

I don’t have an objection to bringing the troops home, but supposedly the good Dr. does not want to use military force and fences to protect our border then what are they going to do yell at them in spanish and dodge bullets. I have an idea why don,t we take the billions in welfare and medicaid fraud perpeptrated by illegal identity theives and build a fence. What are drones going to do take pictures cause they sure as hell won‘t fire warning shots and then big sis will have them at here control and we know the government would never use a peice of surveilance equipment for other than it’s intended purposes. I won’t go alinsky on you and call you names ulnlike your veiled comment on my intelligence at the begining of your post. Ron is not benevolent, he has been a politician for a long time and is running for office, he is pandering to hispanics why else would he have ” Fernando Cortes, Paul’s director of Hispanic outreach ” if we are all equal under the constitution. Soybomb what he is clearly pointing out is paul‘s stating that he doesn’t believe in having guns on the border and your repeated assertions that he would put troops on the border do not “jive”. I have wondered this myself. Does he plan to police our borders with unarmed military? Unarmed drones? It doesn’t seem to make much sense to me to have no enforcement. Enforce our laws already on the books. But with what, a stern look?

I see the confusion now. He talks all the time about bringing the military deployed overseas back home to patrol the border. I think the article is misleading. We dont have the video so it’s hard to be sure – but when he says “barbed wire and guns”, he is probably talking about a military zone like they have in north/south korea. That is more of a prison/mega-state situation

Of course there is a little bit of pandering but i have never seen ron paul contradict himself on important principles. So i think there is something lost in the article translation

THE reason for coming here to work is because of the benefits they receive from the government AND the BIG agra businesses that hire them as migrant workers. Why do you think they are here? Without them no one picks the food we eat. No one wants the dirty jobs. Ask the 99% at the occupy rallies if they’d pick strawberries for a living.. Follow the money and you will always find the answer. Immigration law is a big sham. They don’t want to enforce anything because of cheap labor. The taxpayer picks up the rest of the freebies. Immigrants aren’t the problem, the government freebies are. Common sense prevails here. Ron is correct again. No one should be required to carry papers with the exception of a drivers license. The ID is all over TAXES. Ron Paul will eliminate the income tax so there will be no need to file papers to work. The next thing progressives want is putting an RFID chip in everyone and when they turn off the chip, you’re done. So the next time you eat a tomato or a strawberry it wasn’t a white guy that put it on your table, it was likely a migrant worker earning per deim pay. Get rid of the taxpayer funded government cheese and things will change.
