Peggy Noonan Schools Mika Brzezinski on Obama ‘Mischievously’ Misinforming Public About Contraceptives

During a panel discussion on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” about the growing controversy surrounding the Obama administration’s contraception mandate, co-host Mika Brzezinski took issue with Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan’s comment that the administration is “mischievously” misinforming the public on this issue.

Noonan shared her observations on exactly how the White House and the liberal community are disingenuously spinning the subject for political gain.

As the discussion began, Noonan asked host Joe Scarborough, “Do you believe that at this point of this struggle, the White House and the National Abortion Action Rights League and Planned Parenthood have decided that mischievously and for political gain they will put this whole issue and imbroglio forward as simply a disagreement on contraception? The Catholic Church is trying to take your contraception away from you? Those bad men are trying to mess up with your contraception?”

After a commercial break, Brzezinski took issue, saying, “I do want to ask you about your choice of words, ‘mischievous.’ Come on, Peggy.”

“It is political mischief.” responded Noonan.

“What?” gasped Brzezinski. “Trying to get contraceptives?”

“When you take a serious political issue and put it forward, break it apart in a way that is not true but may excite people who you think deep in your heart are sort of uninformed,” Noonan stated.

    What blew me away, was that Noonan took such a stand, she normally plays right along with the script.

      Yeah, what a schooling that was. Huh? More than half the states in the US already already have this requirement for insurance companies. This is old news that Noonen is getting paid to drum up again. 98% of Catholic women use birth control. The vast majority of Americans, especially women, support insurance coverage of birth control, just like other prescription medicines. Nobody is trying to make political hay out of this except the right.

      Catholic churches are excluded from this, which I agree with. The rest is political theater put on by the right, especially given that 28 states already have this on the books.

      @JZS – in how many of those 28 states with the “same requirement” force the church to pay for the coverage, either directly or indirectly? As I recall, most if not all require that the insurer offer companion policies for the explicit purpose of satisfying this requirement – and the choice to take the policy and the responsibility to pay for the coverage falls to the worker, not the religious group.

      The Catholic Church as well as many others have a problem with paying for abortions and contraceptives. By pay for their insurance they’re still paying for them just one removed. This is not about that anyway it‘s about forcing people to capitulate to the government’s forces on morality. I would think that you as a liberal would understand where that can lead, say for example you can be gay but you can’t have physical contact with your partner because the government said so. Even better forcing a vegetarian to pay for a bloody steak they won’t eat and are repulsed by.

      It’s about the systematic undermining of the Judeo-Christian belief structure in which the nation was founded. Thus undermining the very Constitution by way of the Declaration of Independence

      If obama gets away with this, he will have completed his negation of the entire U.S. Constitution.
      He will have set precedent that government has the authority to ignore Constitutionally protected, God-given rights, in favor of government created entitlements.
      Next “health and human services” will create POLICY that takes away all guns for the purpose of “preserving health.” Don‘t think for a second that they aren’t already working on that possible route to to their socialist utopia.

      Great comments, Miami. I had not even thought of the impact Che Guevara‘s Revolutionarly Liberation Movement coupled with Cone’s Black Liberation Theology, taught to Obama for 20 plus years in Jeremiah Wright’s church, would have on Obama and his apparent hatred of the Catholic Church.

      JZS…everyone has already pointed out how wrong you were with your “28 states have the same” rule or whatever. You too are misrepresenting the facts. As Beekeeper pointed out, the companion policies fall on the worker, not the religious institution.

      I see didn’t see anyone point out your blatant mistake of the “98% of Catholic women use birth control” so I’ll correct you on that. First off, the study removed anyone over the age of 44. Second, the study didn’t take into account anyone who was currently pregnant or recently pregnant. Third, they took out any woman who was currently trying to get pregant or any woman who didn’t want to get pregnant and was not sexually active. In short, the Guttamacher Institute (if that is how you spell it) went OUT OF THEIR WAY to find non-practicing Catholic women for their study. I encourage you to read it for yourself.

      This goes for all of you. Enough with the “98% of Catholic women use birthcontrol” bull crap. It’s simply not true.

      zorro, when you are trying to find out how women prevent an unwanted pregnancy, either by using contraception or the Church recommended rhythm method, you don’t ask women who are are past menopause. Of course 80 year old women and babies are excluded from the statistic. You only ask women who are capable of getting pregnant and are trying to avoid pregnancy.

      The topic here is “birth control.”

      “Get your hands off me”
      “Like H— you are!”
      “You touch me tonight, just remember this: You gotta sleep sometime…” Have all been effective contraception in my home, authorized by the church and far from excluded under any insurance plan, no matter what idiot resides in the Lincoln Bedroom. If you ask any Catholic spouse about practicing contraception, I’m absolutely certain this is on their minds and has skewed your half-witted poll.

      However, your results would be “98% of women who don’t want to get pregnant, are able to get pregnant, and identify themselves as Catholic”. Not “98% of Catholic women.” In fact, the study says that a large majority (I believe it was over 90%), rarely attended mass. Hardly practicing Catholics. The results are being misrepresented by the people who conducted the study and regurgitated by the media ad nauseum.

The government does not have the right to make the church go against its believes. Whether its contraceptives or abortion or whatever. To tell the church it has to pay for insurance for its employees that provides them is wrong. It is against their believes to provide them right or wrong it is their believe, you cannot make them pay for insurance that provides them. This steps on their freedom of religion, which means they can worship and practice whatever they want without government interference.

There was no question that they wouldn‘t endorse Obama’s “accomodation”. The Catholic Bishops however are the ones who represent the Holy See and speak for the church in this country, not the CHA. It‘s the Bishops that will be filing legal action against Obama for violating the church’s first amendment rights. The church and it‘s enterprises aren’t telling the women that work there not to use birth control, sterilants or abortion pills…they’re saying they will not directly or through their chosen insurer pay for these “free” services (yes I know….“free” falls out of Obama’s mouth like drool)..as is protected by the first amendment. Those who work for the church our also cover under freedom of religion not just the church as they are part of the church.       I love Santorum, i just dont think he is the right pick. I hope I am wrong about him. He is the purest conservative there is in that bunch, but that is where it ends for me. The danger of what the Conservative Right is doing is mind boggling. Bill Buckley once said:

      1. Choose the most conservative
      2. Who can win

      I dare to add a third point to it:

      3. Who will do a good job

      I have broken down his comment into the two most important aspects it has. If the only criteria for our choice of a leader at this time is that he/she must be conservative, then the conservative movement is digging America’s grave unwittingly.

      When conservatives begin to do a better work at politics, the right order of the criteria would look something like this.
      • Who can best do the job?
      • Who has the best ideas ?
      • Whose plans seems best to solve the problems the country has?
      • Who is most conservative?
      • Whose ideas are closest to conservative ideology
      • Who has a history of walk and talk conservatism?
      • Who is best amenable to conservative views

      Thinking people are stupid is a trap, a blind alley in the maze, a mental Trojan Horse. I honestly don’t think most, or normal, or the average average, or everyday people are stupid. I think they tend to trust our leaders and our system too easily because they have been taught to do so. I also think life is hard, and finding the time and making the effort to think about this stuff takes a lot of effort. Many Dem‘s and Repub’s need to think most people are stupid, they need for us to be stupid, and they even try to encourage us to be stupid by repeating the same slogans over and over again like a hypnotist and the shiny gold watch. “You are getting very stupid, your brain is getting heavy, you are too tired to think, sleep, sleep… and let me take care of everything for you… there now isn’t that better… sleep, sleep.” We need to find ways to wake people up, to help them think, to encourage them to think.

      So you think having to pay for this health care mandate is going to get us any closer to paying down that 15 trillion in debt. The government continues to grow into the public sector eliminating the free market and mandating that we pay what the government deems to be our fair share of the bill.
      When has the government ever ran anything efficiently? The post office is the perfect example, how does it not make money. Maybe because we decide to charge too little for the service or maybe because we had stamps with odd values like 43 cents. Why would there ever have been a need to print a one cent stamp. Just another government entity that was run poorly by people who only wanted to grow the government above and over “We The People”.

      Obamacare gives the HHS the authority to make calls like this one and many, many others. For example, it also creates alternative funding routes which don’t fall under any current laws preventing funding for abortion. At any point in time, HHS can set up one of these routes directly to Planned Parenthood or someone else and directly fund abortions. This would be perfectly legal. If Obama wins, you will see this happen.

    The issue is not about birth control. It’a about the government forcing a religious institution to ignore their beliefs. The “fix” is just to make the insurance companies pay for the drugs. Great, what that really means is everyone will pay for their free reproductive services. I‘m a Catholic and I don’t use birth control. Keep Obama’s government out of my Church.

      I like the way Mike Huckabee explained it. Forcing Catholic owned hospitals, orphanages, etc. to ignore their religious convictions in favor of providing not only contraceptive pills, but morning after pills (which to a devout practicing Catholic is abortion), is one step too far. To quote Mike, “since when is getting pregnant and delivering a child considered a disease”?

    Peggy Noonan is just far right political hack, and is “mischievously” misinformed herself, and just a misinformation barker for right wing Anti choice forces. Good god god 98% of Catholic already use contraceptives, and Yes it should be covered under preventative Care. Most insurance companies already include contraceptive coverage to Catholic institutions already. The right wing republicans are making a Big mistake using this contraceptive as the C Church and so called pro-lifers have very little support among the majority of voters, including Catholics, on their opposition to contraception.

    Noonan and the far right keep trying to paint PP as an evil institutions, but Planned Parenthood and NARAL ProChocie America have done much more over the years to reduce the need for abortion trough education and protecting access to contraception than any so-called pro-lie org every dreamed o doing. PP and NARAL information and services are based on medical facts , and woman’s health needs and backed up by the medical profession.

      This issue is not about birth control. It’s about the government telling a religion that you have no rights to your beliefs. You will do what we say you will do. By the way, I‘m Catholic and don’t use birth control. I think your stat of 98% of Catholic women use birth control is a little off. I know plenty in my parish who don’t use it. There is low cost birth control available almost everywhere in the United States. Keep your government out of my religion!

      I agree with Encinom. It is not a 1st Amendment issue. It’s more basic than that. This is clear overreach and intentional expansion of the powers of the executive office. Where in the constitution does it give our president the ability to force an insurance company to provide specific services, for free? It doesn’t. The 1st Amendment issue is a simple distraction and no more. (This is just another extension of the power grab we now have with his unconstitutional Obamacare.)
