Peggy Noonan Smacks Down Keith Olbermann for Questioning Second Businessman on GOP Ticket: A Lot of People Who Think Businessmen Create Businesses Which Create Jobs

Image source: ABC

Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan on Sunday shot down Keith Olbermann’s suggestion that a “second businessman” on the GOP presidential ticket is not the way to go for presumptive nominee Mitt Romney.

Appearing together on a roundtable for ABC’s “This Week,“ Noonan had said it would be a ”wonderful time” to pick Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, calling him “someone fully adult and accomplished.”

“A former trade rep, former OMB [Office of Management and Budget], I think six or seven terms in the Congress, U.S. Senator,” Noonan ticked off. “Yeah, this would be a wonderful time to pick someone fully adult and accomplished.”

She continued, “I think Mr. Romney should not try to be, should not try to electrify and go outside the system — and pick somebody new. Someone you’ve never heard of. We’ve done that one twice in my lifetime. Mr. Quayle, Ms. Palin. Don’t do that again. Underscore who you want to be – serious.”

Olbermann, seeming mystified by Noonan’s response, asked: “Do you really want a second businessman on that ticket though in light of the, if it’s not a majority view, it’s a very large view right now that business has never been viewed less favorably in this country since they ran Jay Gould out of town?”

“Oh, my goodness,” Noonan replied, looking surprised.

“Portman and Romney together?” Olbermann pressed.

“Yeah, I think that would be just fine I think,” Noonan said firmly. “There is a lot of people who think businessmen create businesses which create jobs.”

“But what about running a government?” Olbermann said.

“Well, I think people are awfully mad at Wall Street and they’re awful mad at certain types of finaglers in business. But they’re not mad at businessmen,” Noonan said.

    What is this turkey doing on ANY TV show anymore. Oh, I forgot, ABC is part of the Obama Campaign Network too, just like the NBC crowd. On second thought, they should put him on

      Did you notice when Noonan said Romney shouldn’t pick someone like Sarah Palin? Obviously she’s not totally sold out to FOX, and has some common sense.

      In any case, if that’s this website definition of a “smack down” then that’s a redefinition of the phrase. She agree with him that people are ticked at Wall Street, and then said she supported him anyway. Okay, whatever.

      Hey by the way, the rich guys and Wall Street are making record profits, and taxes on these “job creators” are lower than they have been for forty years. So, there’s this idea that if taxes on the “job creators” are low, and if these “job creators” are making money then they’ll, you know, create jobs or something. Hey guess what! They aren’t creating jobs any more than when Bush cut taxes, twice, and blew out the deficit.

      At some point Americans are going realize that cutting taxes doesn’t create jobs. They’re going to realize that when people like you and me, people who buy things have more money, and buy things, then jobs are created. Companies hire people when they need them to make products, not when the owner has more money.

      While its idiotic that Oberman should think businessmen don’t create jobs because the current president who knows nothing about business says so and burdens them with paying for his makework government jobs, Noonan shows her elitism by throwing Palin, the only person who addressed the non-elite, thinking people in the last election. Obama bashed the nebulous unseen bad people that are out to get the poor. McCain ran as a more sensible, less scary democrat. I thought once Santorum was out and the establishment Reps felt safe, they would drop the need to bash their base.

      Taxes are higher than ever, JZS. The last few weeks the news has been full of references that these United States now have the highest corporate tax rate in the world.

      You are a lying fool. If you’re going to stomp around for the Communist Party, you need to find news that’s less recent. The Obama Administration is trying to convince Congress to increase Capital Gains taxes, too. You are just full of lies, JZS.

      The Senate still hasn’t passed a budget. Hey, JZS, have you ever tried to control your spending without a budget? Have you ever had the responsibility of budgeting my money? I’m a 93% – I paid 15% of my income last year.

      Don’t tell me how low taxes are, because I’m supporting a family of 5 on 80K – 15%.

      I’m probably paying you to sit on a computer, getting fatter on my tax dollars, to trash my country. Maybe you’ll slip in the tub or something.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Basic economics. Spending money does not generate wealth.
      Saving money, and investing money, tends to generate wealth. It doesn’t always, sometimes people and companies fail. Most of the time, it does generate wealth. When people save money, banks have real, loanable funds to give to entreprenuers.
      It’s real money, and the banker is responsible to the account holders to make sure he places safe bets. The government has skewed all of that, and further penalizing citizens and business would be stupid.
      JZ -
      You are right about when taxes are cut, people have more money to spend.
      In our state’s largest city, the residents are facing a 2.5 mill increase and the number of foreclosures and houses on the market has doubled in the last month. Those in the rental market are seeing increases of $100.00 per month in rent. A lot of them are single parent homes. And in an effort to keep the cost of running the city down, employees are losing their jobs. That’s just locally.
      State wide, they cut the fuel assistance to the elderly and disabled. SSI has been cut. These people live on fixed incomes. Gas prices, however, with local, state and federal taxes, have continued to rise.
      If B.O.’s fossil fuel restrictions go through, then the cost of electricity, the cost of gas and home heating oil will increase also. It’s a pretty grim pictures.
      Personally, I haven’t had a raise in three years, and will be losing one of my part time jobs. My spouse hadn’t had a raise in five, but the health insurance costs have almost doubled.
      Most of these increases are driven by taxes, whether on the local, state or federal level. However, when there is more money, both product (goods) and services increase because employers can afford to hire more people to make more goods or provide more services. That means more firefighters, more police men, more clerks at the grocery store, etc.
      Hey JZS, why is it that you view profits as something evil? This is the United States of America where we should all view success as something positive. As for your comment regarding tax cuts and job creation, I would encourage you to do a little research before making such idotic statements. Whenever our governement has instituted across the board tax cuts (see JFK, Ronald Reagan and G.W. Bush), job creation has exploded. In the mean time, stop whining about the profits and wages of people who produce in this country. You sound like a petulant child.
      GCCUNNING…JZS just recites lefty rote. He doesn’t think.
      He believes there’s benefits to tax cuts. George W. Bush lowered cap gains tax rates to 15%. What happened? Government revenue WENT UP by over 100%. Why? Because it encouraged more investment activity. What‘s Obama’s proposal? To raise cap gains taxes. Why? Because raising taxes on “the rich guy’s tax” is what Obama’s been taught..he doesn’t know anything else. During the 2008 campaign Obama was pointed out that the lower tax rate actually raised government revenue, Obama’s instinctive response was “it’s not fair”. Uneffingteachable…just like JZS here. Dont’ waste your time with JZS. He’s a shill and a particularly stupid one. His presence is actually noxious and offensive to intelligent life.
      There has been too much questionable behind-the-doors deal-making in Indianapolis. If Lugar gets elected and then retires, whom do you think Mike Pence, the heir apparent, will appoint to fill out his term? And what would embarrass Mitch and Cheri, that he decided not to run for president?
I too hope that he stays out of the race. We already have a big RINO who will eventually be declared the candidate anyway. I hope that Romney has the sense enough to choose somebody who is at least a little more of a conservative. I know better than to expect a real conservative to be chosen. From the looks on Olberman’s face it would be a hoot to watch him should a conservative businessman be chosen. As somebody else here suggested he would have to heavily wrap his head with duct tape in hopes of keeping it from exploding on the air. Like that early ’80s movie Scanners with Michael Ironside.
      “We” need a solid majority. What exactly will that do (rhetorical question)? The ball has been moved forward and unless Romney, assuming he gets elected, clears out the bureaucracy, which is a freaking hornets nest, then identify the mounds of ridiculous and freedom choking regulations that have been put in place the last 10-15 years, “we” don’t have a chance to turn back the tide. He would need to take an axe to a large portion of the federal government and I just don’t see him doing that. Obama has moved the ball forward and Romney would likely just make token gestures to seem like he is reversing everything Obama. This has been the pattern for many years regardless of who is in the White House or controls congress. We shall see!
      And, apparantly, Noonan has no IDEA what a fully capable adult is to bash Palin and Quayle. She’s an establishment RNC backstabber who is scared spitless of the Tea Party Movement. She’s no conservative. She’s what the Main Stream Media wants us to believe is a conservative. She’s better and smarter than Olbermann, for sure…. but not by very much!
    If the government was run like a business bathtub boy, the country would be in much better shape than it is now. I very rarely watched This Week, but the fact that they had Olbermann on a panel means I will never be watching again.
    I do not care what anyone says, government does not create jobs. To create jobs, we need to get the government out of business completely, let the free market determine the market. End the government corporation that we have and elect a President instead of a CEO. The Constitution is what we need to get back to. Our government corporation has destroyed the Bill of Rights for the most part and are doing their best to rid us of all our rights in order to control the world through borrowed money and enslavement of the masses.
      How about Condoleezza Rice for VP?
      I actually have a co-worker who worked on the Obama campaign in 2008 tell me he would vote for Romney if he chose Condi to be his running mate. If not, he plans to vote for Obama again. I asked him why and he said she’s smart and he trusts her.
    I’m not mad @ Wall-Street in the least,, nor am I mad at banks or bankers– I am, however, mad at the Barney Franks’- The Tom Dashels- The little Timmy Geithers‘ the Charlie Rangles’ and the Maxine Waters’ in our government for gaming the system when it was to their favor and then screaming foul,foul when caught…..Remeber, it were the political opponets of all the fore mentioned crooks that first exposed them,, not the IRS and certainly not the media….
      So, you cannot think of any Republican in your list? Nobody listens or nobody cares. Progressives are in BOTH parties. Man, if Romney is the nominee, the corrupt corporations that backed Obama in ‘08 that are now backing Romney will be able to continue us down the path of destruction. I find it hard to believe thaat the TV can still continue to pull the wool over so many eyes.
      Brother, you should be mad at the government figures who allowed the bankers to go out of control. You got that right. But you should be mad at wall street. You should be mad at the bankers. Im not talking about the guys at your local bank. Im not even talking about bankers who make millions and people on wall street who make millions, that their right. You should be mad at the bankers who make billion and trillions (for their banks) they take over countrys. Bet aginst countrys. They have no moral judgment. Its all about the money and power, and they have plenty of money if you get what im saying. They want to control us. The government has benn sold out. The bankers like Goldman sachs and JP Morgan Chase put their people in the highest forms of government all over the world. Goldman Sachs rules the world. We are on a direct path to world government thru the UN and brought to us by the banking elite and the US government.
    Like Politicians have done such a stellar job of running the government, it could probably do a better job by itself. Obama is trying to sell “the looser’s are the ones to you need” like him, never made a dollar in his life back four generations other than a public dime. Dumbest champagne strategy I’ve ever seen, “you don’t want that guy, he’s a winner”. Sounds like a nerd trying to play football.
      Isn’t that the truth! I wanted to slap Noonan up the side the head to get the affected tone out of her voice. This is the one time I give Van permission to tell someone to sit down and shut up. Elite Republicans like her are no better than the radical Democrats, and they both need to be replaced with conservatives and libertarians.
