Pelosi: Catholic Church ‘Has Not Enforced’ its Teaching on Contraception

During an event at Texas A&M University on Monday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi claimed the Catholic Church has never enforced its teaching on contraception and that the church is now looking to the federal government to enforce that teaching for it.

“Ninety-eight percent of women in childbearing age that are Catholic use contraception. So, in practice the church has not enforced this and now they want the federal government and private insurance to enforce it. It just isn’t consistent to me,” Pelosi said.

The statement came after Pelosi was questioned about the conflict between the Catholic Church and the Obama administration over its new policy mandating that religious employers cover the cost of contraception and sterilization procedures for its employees.

Pelosi added, “Whatever my personal beliefs or my personal upbringing are on this subject everyone has their own responsibility in terms of the size and the rest of their family.”

“So, I think this should be removed from the debate, it’s inflammatory–misrepresentations are made.”

All 181 Catholic bishops in the United States have vehemently denounced the Obama administration’s mandate, calling it “an unprecedented attack on religious freedom.”

    “In practice” Nancy – you should leave your filthy little hands OFF the beliefs of the Catholic church!

    The government wants to ram down our throats how ‘separate’ we are supposed to be by attacking the Christian faith left and right (not that the left has any – but ANYway) yanking the 10 Commandments from public buildings, even though much of our country’s laws are based on Jewish / Christian beliefs and codes.

    My father grew up during WWII – in Germany. Immigrated here (LEGALLY) after the war and raised 5 kids, telling us all what a great country this was. It’s now looking more and more like Germany in the years leading up to WWII. Getting scary out there folks… and Nancy here is spouting stuff not even realizing that she is helping history repeat itself. Gotta watch those leaders who sweep into office on a huge wave of popularity – then little can be done to correct or discipline them. Things get out of hand, really, really quick.

      Here is the perfect example of what the agenda of the progressives is base on. Enforcing their views on what is right and wrong. In religion we have choices, it’s called free will. In our present day government with King Hussein sitting upon the throne. All of the progressive ideals will be fully enforced. The people will be made to obey.
      Are you getting it yet Americans, this isn’t about liberals and conservatives. This is about those in government and business controlling our lives. If you want to go the way of the Europeans, vote for King Hussein or Romney. If you want a chance at saving our Republic from these evil people, you have to vote for someone else in 2012. Four more years of the progressive agenda and we the people will not have enough wealth left to save her.

      To be clear, the Catholic churches that provide insurance do not have to have insurance for birth control. Churches are exempt. The government is not forcing churches to cover prescriptions for birth control. Churches are exempt.

      Second, I believe that Catholicism is a great force of good in the world as I believe religion is in general. But the Catholic bureaucracy, the old white men who profess to speak for God? These old white guys systematically covered for pedophiles in their ranks, shifting pedophile priests from one church to another as they received complaints. They paid off the victims who did and will suffer the rest of their life with confusion, guilt and shame. Don’t tell me this was a couple of isolated priests, and a few people who covered for them. This was a systemic problem in the Catholic church.

      Again, I think the Catholic church is a force for good in the world, but for these same old white guys, who covered for the pedophiles and paid off the victims, to declare their outrage at having any organization associated with them being required to follow the law seems to me empty. Where was the outrage when preists were doing a number on teenagers? Where is the outrage that 98% of Catholic women (and their partners) are using birth control? It’s true: these old white guys want the Federal government to enforce what they cannot through their religion.

      You are incorrect. It’s not just the church were worship services are held. The Catholic Church as an institution provides multi-services for the general welfare of the public. Colleges, hospitals, food pantries, shelters and insurance are part of the multi-services that employ Catholics and Non-Catholics alike. They services supply insurance to these employees. Under the health care law these services will be force to provide contraceptives, abortifacients and sterilizations through insurance companies… one of many is Christian Brothers. That is a Catholic based insurance company.
      Second, you think “that Catholicism is a great force for good”, but call it’s Bishops “old white men” and doubt God’s ability to lead His people through them. Are you saying that you are pure of soul and can throw a rock without blame? Denigrating God’s servants denigrates God, for they are His and answerable to Him alone. And what statistical secular proof do you have to say that it’s more than “a couple of isolated priests” and a “systematic problem” that you opine? None. It’s your opinion based on the bias of the media.

      The Roman Catholic Church has always championed the life of the unborn. Period. These “organization(s) associated with them” are not just “associated” with them. They are called Catholic Hospital, Catholic College, etc for a reason. They are run by Catholics and follow the Doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church. If they didn’t they could not use “Catholic” in their title. In fact many Colleges have lost the title because they went against Church teachings and didn’t reform.
      And no, the Episcopate and Presbyterate edify the Faithful to the Churches doctrines, they don’t force the faithful to live them. It’s called freewill. Those that don’t adhere to the teachings of the Church excommunicate themselves and put their souls in mortal jeopardy. Mrs. Pelosi herself falls in this category for she is speaking against Church teachings publicly. An as for 98%… would love for her to cite the source of that “fact”, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

      For those wondering about the “98% of Catholic women use contraceptives” claim being made by Pelosi and others thinking to justify the federal government’s abrogation of the First Amendment rights of faith based organizations, it comes from a misquote of a Guttmacher Institute study. It’s an organization dedicated to seeking to advance sexual and reproductive health through research, policy analysis and public education. I took particular note that the study noted whether women EVER used contraception.       I agree. I don’t see how Nancy Pelosi can call herself “Catholic”. I don’t even see how she can call herself “Christian” In fact in the history of religion, the church, and the world, there are numerous instances where a husband could take everything a person owned, up to and including his life, were said person to cause the death of his unborn child, whether or not the wife died as well. Historically, morally and ethically for centuries we have regarded and unborn child as a human person. It was common law and common sense. The problem was that the framers of our Constitution, seeing such things as common sense failed to write it down, not realizing a bunch of liberal idiots like Pelosi who forgot what a real woman was and is, would be spouting off such psychotic drivel as this and convincing other lawmakers, and judges of the same.

So let us call on the Catholic church to be clear on this since Nancy doesn’t seem to feel the Church has taken a stand on birth control and she seems not to want to recognize this situation also involves abortion and pregnancy termination drugs. Please, will the Pope or one of the senior Bishop’s excomunicate Nancy if her “practicing Catholosism” and public statements have caused true believers to go astray through her misguided example and personal deffinitions of Church policy. I believe refusal of communion was in order just a few years ago for some public figures that failed to take the right side in Roe V. Wade?

      There is a BIG difference between PREVENTING conception (i.e. the pill, IUD and other means) and killing a life that has started (abortion via surgical intervention or RU-186). That’s a MAJOR distinction, Ms. Pelosi. I would chance to say that the majority of the women covered in that 98% used preventative measures, and not abortion.

      Oh yeah, and aren’t you the one that actually announced that the early Church fathers stated that life did not begin at conception? I seem to remember that.       Actually, in a wired turn of events due to the American perv crisis, the pope has started talking about excommunication.

      Last month or so, the word was sent out from the Vatican that a catholic cannot check their faith at a ballot box. I think that statement is what started the democrats to declare war on the church. Can youimagine how much power liberals would have if Catholics,baptist,Protestants , Mormons, Jews, allchristians did not check their faith at a ballot box?……………..none

      Not because of their personal sins; the sneering about the hypocrisy of contraception, abortion, and priests diddling kids is legitimate enough even if it’s a fraction of what goes on elsewhere (like public school teachers diddling students).

      It’s that these politicians are VOTING against their claimed principles; they are RULING against the morals they claim to uphold. They place the millstone around the public neck, so to speak, and they deserve moral condemnation for doing so.

    Any time that a statistic says any hot button issue has over 90% of people going one way or another, the statistic is not to be trusted. As my corrections teacher taught me, “if 90% of people are doing anything more significant than breathing, check the facts behind the stats.”

    From what I understand, the statistic in this case excluded women in their child bearing age, so that already takes a huge chunk out of the population of catholic women, then they took away women that were pregnant, trying to get pregnant. Logical, but deceptive none the less.

    Aside from that, when has it become someone‘s right to have birth control pills that they don’t pay for? Here’s a hint, a box of twenty condoms at the gas station I worked at was five dollars. If you literally can’t keep it in your pants, then you should have the forethought to go to a nearby gas station and buy them! I‘m really tired of footing the bill for other people’s stupidity.

      Her district is the 98% that she’s spouting. She does what the Homosexuals and progressive pervs want and she can’t fail at re-election. The Catholic Church has made many mistakes in the past, but abortion and after the fact contraception (abortifactents) is something they have railed against since the time of Jesus. The Pope should publicly excommunicate Nancy and all others who claim to be Catholics, but use their positions of elected authority to lead people astray. This woman needs prayer and a whole lot of it.

      In the poll, they basically counted only people who were using birth control.
      Then they asked what method of birth control they were using.
      So it is a bogus number.

      If you go to the source of Queen Nancy’s poll of 98% claim you will find that the questions eliminated many categories – A poll in the US of A that has a 98% claim should be examined closely. It is a bogus number if you look at all of the polling data.

      Though Catholics realize their Church’s teaching on contraception, it is entirely their personal choice as to how they follow that teaching. The Church should not be forced to pay for something that It believes to be morally wrong just because people do not chose to abide by this belief in their personal lives. The Church is not trying to interfere in anyone’s personal decision in this regard. They’re only saying that they should not have to pay for it.
