Pelosi: ‘It’s All About Fairness in Our Country’

Speaking at a United Steelworkers event on Monday, Nancy Pelosi railed against the wealthy and income inequality in America:

We’re talking about addressing the disparity in our country of income, where the wealthy people continue to get wealthier, and some other people are falling out of the middle class when we want to bring many more people into the middle class. But that disparity is not just about wages alone. That disparity is about ownership and equity. It’s all about fairness in our country.

Pelosi also continued her charge that Republicans receive loads of foreign interest money, and asserted that the Wall Street reform bill was about saving jobs on “main street”:

      I’ll assume you mean those that actually earned their wealth, for those that inherited it merely benefited from the actions of their fathers, for whom the following comments apply…

      If you have watched the corporate earnings reports for the last year, then you would realize how dumb your comment sounds. If you understood the source of labor productivity growth in the US for the last decade or more, then you’d understand how ignorant that comment is. The wealthy have profited as labor has lost jobs. Where do you think the earnings growth has come despite flat or declining revenue in the last three years? And while senior management has failed to grow the top line, they have increased their salaries and bonuses from 2005 to 2010. This is how the game works. Now, there are exceptions to this rule, as companies like Google and Facebook have clearly grown jobs based upon innovation. But that is a very tiny exception proving the general rule that corporate profit growth and margin expansion has come at the expense of labor, and management has taken home Carly Fiorina sized profits while tens of thousands of Americans, like at HP, are now the long-term unemployed. Yet at the end of the day, when you lose your middle class, you’ve lost your consumers. Companies may not care about the US turning into the Philippines or Greece, but citizens should care about this and ensure that there are proper support mechanisms to help people retrain for another job. And laws should be strengthened to ensure that executives and investors do not crash the system so that their profits are privatized while their losses are socialized. This is what Wall Street reform was supposed to be about, and it merely touches the top of the ice berg on what is required to fix the ills of our current system.

      ABC, I take it that you worked for a union. Who do you think received most of the money from these big banks for their campaign? Who do you think passed this finance bill that now completely bypass the Congress on everything. Why do you think big corporations are leaving this Country? Because of Nancy, Reid and Obuma and their policies.

      Actually, the companies are following their own self interest. They’re going where labor is cheaper which is capitalism in its purest form. America CANNOT keep up with chinese or indian wages. It’s not possible. Even if we abolish unions and cut the taxes to the bones it’s not possible. Americans don’t work for 40 dollars a week, 14 hours a day.

    Typical Nancy. She is such a hoot. All this socialism is giving me such a warm & fuzzy feeling inside. I don’t know how I can still feel that. I was told ever since I was a kid if you looked into Medusa’s eyes you would turn to stone. Maybe I have to be in the same room with her. It sure is easy to go in somewhere like a union & give softball speech & have everyone cheer. It’s better for her then facing any townhall meetings. Everytime I see her it makes me more determined to push to get her out. And please Lord, our Father in Heaven, please help Nancy pelosi blink. It must torment her as it does us watching her not blink.

    People who are in unions are usually middle class. The steelworker unions has forced must production of steel to be move away from America because of the demands they wanted. What happen to Bethlehem Steel, United State Steel, and others. What happen to the American car industry? It was taken over because the union workers did not care about quality control. Today it is different and the union work is bring sense to quality in order to keep their jobs

      There is no question that the unions pushed for too much in the 70s and helped precipitate the decline of US Steel, but management also failed to modernize plants and improve productivity. Also, new steel demand increased in parts of the world that slapped tariffs on US steel, since they wanted to grow their own industries and viewed the industry as strategic (e.g., Japan, Korea, Brazil, China, India). Partisan hacks want to blame everything on the unions since that fits neatly into their very elementary world view. Yet I like to shake up that view and make people think and hopefully realize that the world is more complex than their little theories describe. And I like to ask the following question: if powerful unions are such a bad thing, then why has Germany, with much more powerful unions than the US has ever had, become and remained such an export powerhouse? They produce cars and steel and the like using unionized labor, and they remain highly competitive. Perhaps you attribute far too much blame to the unions…

      If all those people in Nancy’s district are so smart then why is California insolvent? Perhaps just perhaps it is much wiser not to try to govern and control everything.       Conservative Grinch, California is insolvent because it has been hit particularly hard in this recession given the region’s huge dependence on real estate–which also explained the great boom from 2000-2006. I’ve heard that up to 20% of the economy was linked to real estate by 2006 if you include the multiplier effects. The state is also living beyond its means and cannot easily or quickly cut spending because much of it was put in place by the power of popular initiatives so neither the Governor nor the Legislature can cut those parts of the budget. Beyond those popular initiatives are the pensions, which are a very big part of the budget and which cannot be renegotiated since they are valid contracts. I don’t know the exact figures on this, but you’ve gotta believe that when they start cutting AP courses in local high schools and closing public lands and parks, the low hanging fruit has already been chopped. The rest of the wasteful spending cannot be touched by law. This has to do with too much control to the people rather than too little, both in terms of these popular initiatives and in terms of freedom to form contracts. You have insinuated that the problems are due to SF liberals but this is not true either in gov’t or in the economy more generally. The regions that are struggling the most, however, are not in and around the Bay area, which has the best model for wealth creation in the world; rather, it is in areas to the north (e.g., Sacramento) and to the south (e.g., Inland Empire and new building around SD), and those regions are not nearly as liberal as SF. Moreover, a lot of the remaining problems around the budget have to do with the fact that you cannot make budget decisions with a simple majority, so intransigent Republicans can prevent compromise with an effective veto vote. So I wouldn’t make generalized comments about all of California or even the liberals in SF without understanding a lot more about the state.

      Psychosis, I do my best to supply facts and statistics as I am doing now. You generally retort with opinions masquerading as facts. Either put up facts and logic in a rebuttal or retract your claim that I’ve been “beaten up” on this site. You have yet to lay a hit on one of my arguments.

You haven’t proven anything at all. Texas has a budget shortfall this year equal to 20% of its GDP–the same amount as California. But of course, being impervious to facts, you‘ll just ignore mine and claim victory without ever marshalling a single shred of evidence to show that the blame liberals narrative isn’t 100% correct.       You would die of starvation and exposure if you had to exist on the wealth created by the “Wannabe Tyrants” but we all live in luxury (compared to the standard of living before the industrial revolution) in an economy created by innovative Entrepreneurs.

      This is completely correct. I have been to places that only seem to have the very poor and the very wealthy. The gap between the income classes is very apparent, and apparently unassailable. This country has a middle class, and it is one of the greatest economic engines that have ever been created. Because you realize the fruits of your labor, and if you are willing to educate yourself, work hard you can rise into the upper income ranks, perhaps even being considered wealthy.

      I started a small business several years ago. During my first year in business, I worked for someone else full time, and worked my business in my off time. I was computer consulting, and would frequently work until 3AM to satisfy my customers, then get up to go to work in the morning. When I got ready to pay my taxes that year, I found that FULLY 50% of the income I earned had to be paid as taxes. I was appaled! The Government was not even there to bring me a cup of coffee during those marathon sessions, but felt that I should gladly hand over half of it to them to distribute to the poor?? What is up with that?? Nevertheless, we strive to improve our lot in life by our sweat and toil, and if that is not the case, and we are sitting around waiting on the coins to fall from the pockets of the wealthy, then we cannot be choosy about how much actually falls. Fair or not.

      When I was first beginnging to work, which I did in my early teen years, I would sometimes talk about something not being fair that had happened at work. My parents told me in no uncertain terms that life was not fair. It was not fun to be faced with this lesson, but it is completely true, and the sooner you understand it, the better you are equipped to deal with life.

      Where is the hypocrisy? Is it that she is rich and is calling for policies that tax the rich more? That is called a progressive tax system, which we’ve had for nearly a century. Is it that she cares about the poor or struggling middle class? Just because she is rich doesn’t mean that she cannot support such programs for those less fortunate than herself. I struggle to see the hypocrisy here. You can dispute that her policies make sense for whatever reason (e.g., I don’t care about equity, it will never be managed without massive waste, it creates disincentives for jobs to move back here from low-wage China, etc.), but hypocrisy is DEFINITELY not a valid argument in this case.

      Now, the Tea Party candidates, who have taken welfare or made money off of government programs but now want to shut them down despite their own personal benefitting from them. That is clearly hypocrisy, and Miller, Angle and Paul ought to own up to it.

      As if class warfare is merely a political tactic. Marx got that much correct: that labor and capital have interests that are far from aligned, that when we say we bailed out the banks to save capitalism but we cannot bail out steel workers we are showing that lack of alignment. You think class warfare is a rhetorical term used by poorly educated conservatives to describe dirty Democratic campaign tactics. It happens to be a socioeconomic phenomenon studied in hundreds of historical contexts and geographies and it refers to the real misalignment of interests of those who sell their labor for a living and those who invest capital for a living. That you don’t understand this means you understand very little. Given that the majority of our economy is driven by consumption, you ought to care about the well being of the middle class that is responsible for that consumption. And the vast majority of that middle class is labor, not capital. Where they go, the economy goes.

      The labor unions do not have the guts to do the right thing…which would be to surrender some of the perks and benefits that are draining the manufacturing potential of this country. A union worker, dollar for dollar, is not as productive as non-union workers. I have seen this with my own eyes. Any one in the U.A.W. is very familiar with the term “Gummint work”. That refers to any activity that is NOT your job, while you are ‘ on the clock’. My estimate is that 30-35% of a union worker’s day is spent doing “gummint work”. At the wages these people are paid, this cost is enormous!!

      Why not put the congress on minimum wage as well – its the good for goose is good for gander principle.

      It is so nice that the Progressives are finally angry enough that they are not even bothering to hide their distortions of truth and just stating they want to redistribute the wealth, and crush the America most of us love to be a part of.

      Seems the memories of the electorate are very vague. When Nasty Pelosi voted to raise the minimum wage she got a special exclusion for American Samoa. This was becuase her Husband had a factory and did not want to pay the new rates. We must not forget there are two rules in the US with Pelosi one set for us and one for her.

      There is no fairness, period. There is also no such thing as a corporate tax or tax on the wealthy. Corporations don’t pay taxes, period. Neither do the wealthy. Any so-called taxes on the wealthy will simply be applied, in-turn, to the middle-class. Why do people keep falling for this stupidity? A flat-tax is the ONLY way to make it “fair”. 10% across the board, with no loopholes, incentives, excuses, etc.

      So Pelosi’s family is very wealthy, has one of the nicest houses on Nob Hill overlooking all of SF, and is nonetheless advocating higher taxes for the rich. This alone will not bring back the middle class, but it will close the structural deficit caused by GW Bush cutting taxes while failing to identify the program cuts to offset the lower tax receipts. Until a Republican can specifically state what those program cuts are, then that tax cut ought to be reversed on everyone and on the richest first, since those marginal dollars are less likely to impact our consumer led economy. This is all simple economics and accounting.

      The politics of this drives me crazy, since it is the Tea Party groups that are upset about Pelosi standing up for programs that help the down-trodden even though many of these same Tea Party folks, not to mention their high-profile leaders, have taken government money. However, when they take it, they are not a parasite but a hard-working citizen on tough times. It’s just when someone else takes that money that they are dead-beats and Pelosi is rightly demonized as a Communist.       “The Perfect Storm”

      t’s a perfect storm. And I’m not talking about the impending dangers facing Democrats. I’m talking about the dangers facing our democracy.

      First, income in America is now more concentrated in fewer hands than it’s been in 80 years. Almost a quarter of total income generated in the United States is going to the top 1 percent of Americans.

      The top one-tenth of one percent of Americans now earn as much as the bottom 120 million of us.

      Who are these people? With the exception of a few entrepreneurs like Bill Gates, they’re top executives of big corporations and Wall Street, hedge-fund managers, and private equity managers. They include the Koch brothers, whose wealth increased by billions last year, and who are now funding tea party candidates across the nation.

      Which gets us to the second part of the perfect storm. A relatively few Americans are buying our democracy as never before. And they’re doing it completely in secret.

      Hundreds of millions of dollars are pouring into advertisements for and against candidates – without a trace of where the dollars are coming from. They’re laundered through a handful of groups. Fred Maleck, whom you may remember as deputy director of Richard Nixon’s notorious Committee to Reelect the President (dubbed Creep in the Watergate scandal), is running one of them. Republican operative Karl Rove runs another. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a third.

      The Supreme Court’s Citizens United vs. the Federal Election Commission made it possible. The Federal Election Commission says only 32 percent of groups paying for election ads are disclosing the names of their donors. By comparison, in the 2006 midterm, 97 percent disclosed; in 2008, almost half disclosed.

      We’re back to the late 19th century when the lackeys of robber barons literally deposited sacks of cash on the desks of friendly legislators. The public never knew who was bribing whom.

      Just before it recessed the House passed a bill that would require that the names of all such donors be publicly disclosed. But it couldn’t get through the Senate. Every Republican voted against it. (To see how far the GOP has come, nearly ten years ago campaign disclosure was supported by 48 of 54 Republican senators.)

      Here’s the third part of the perfect storm. Most Americans are in trouble. Their jobs, incomes, savings, and even homes are on the line. They need a government that’s working for them, not for the privileged and the powerful.

      Yet their state and local taxes are rising. And their services are being cut. Teachers and firefighters are being laid off. The roads and bridges they count on are crumbling, pipelines are leaking, schools are dilapidated, and public libraries are being shut.

      There’s no jobs bill to speak of. No WPA to hire those who can’t find jobs in the private sector. Unemployment insurance doesn’t reach half of the unemployed.

      Washington says nothing can be done. There’s no money left.

      No money? The marginal income tax rate on the very rich is the lowest it’s been in more than 80 years. Under President Dwight Eisenhower (who no one would have accused of being a radical) it was 91 percent. Now it’s 36 percent. Congress is even fighting over whether to end the temporary Bush tax cut for the rich and return them to the Clinton top tax of 39 percent.

      Much of the income of the highest earners is treated as capital gains, anyway – subject to a 15 percent tax. The typical hedge-fund and private-equity manager paid only 17 percent last year. Their earnings were not exactly modest. The top 15 hedge-fund managers earned an average of $1 billion.

      Congress won’t even return to the estate tax in place during the Clinton administration – which applied only to those in the top 2 percent of incomes.

      It won’t limit the tax deductions of the very rich, which include interest payments on multi-million dollar mortgages. (Yet Wall Street refuses to allow homeowners who can’t meet mortgage payments to include their primary residence in personal bankruptcy.)

      There’s plenty of money to help stranded Americans, just not the political will to raise it. And at the rate secret money is flooding our political system, even less political will in the future.

      The perfect storm: An unprecedented concentration of income and wealth at the top; a record amount of secret money flooding our democracy; and a public becoming increasingly angry and cynical about a government that’s raising its taxes, reducing its services, and unable to get it back to work.

      We’re losing our democracy to a different system. It’s called plutocracy.

I personally am so angry at these liberals, I could spit, spit, spit, but instead of showing that angry stupidly, I am getting everyone I know to vote conservative on November 2nd. So far, I have (or the truth has) converted about 120 people (friends and family). I am doing my very best to educate them as to what I have learned myself in the last year. I was liberal – REALLY LIBERAL until my arguments simply fell apart after listening to Glenn Beck and some of the other conservative talk radio hosts (and, DOING MY OWN HOMEWORK!!!!). I could NOT justify abortion. I could NOT justify ruining my country for the sake of lazy do-not-want-to-work mindset welfare recipients. I could not justify taking from others just so I could benefit. I believe now, that TRUE LOVE, whether it is for country, a person, or something else, IS SELFLESS. In other words, you give of yourself TOTALLY without ever asking for anything in return. Liberals ALWAYS want something in return. I think THAT is what turned me around, and of course, my relationship with Jesus Christ, who is still teaching me the true meaning of loving thy neighbor as thyself. So, Nancy, do us all a big favor: RESIGN OR READ THE BIBLE, OR BOTH, and maybe, just maybe, you will see something or someone OTHER THAN YOURSELF. THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.       TeaPartyPatriots, first, I hope that you will denounce Miller and Angle for taking such free funds and call out Paul for making a business out of it. Second, I hope you will provide me with evidence that the people without a job are lazy and not looking as opposed to part of the structurally unemployed that cannot land a job. Third, I hope that you will agree that since governments have implemented counter-cyclical measures like unemployment benefits, the boom-bust cycles seen in developed economies have been more modest than the horrific ones seen in the latter half of the 19th and first third of the 20th centuries (this is borne out by many econometric studies, by the way). Finally, I hope you will admit that regardless of how you personally feel about government aid, that one cannot suddenly remove it in the middle of the deepest economic downturn seen since the ‘30’s when people are relying on such funds just to get by. I listened to a recent conference call involving the CEO of Walmart, who noted that they are seeing at their 24-hour grocery stores a phenomenon whereby families show up at 11PM and buy basic food (milk, eggs, etc.) and then get in line just before 12AM because that is when their food stamps are activated. The CEO noted that these people could come the next morning, but they are coming at the first second that the funds are available. His conclusion? That they are literally malnourished and need that food immediately. Waiting eight hours will not work for them. His guess is that about 10% of their shoppers have demonstrated this behavior. These do not sound like lazy families to me. And their numbers make your argument sound terribly harsh, while your support of Tea Party candidates with records of taking government funds when they needed them but now hold policies of ending such policies for others sounds rather hypocritical.
