Penn Jillette: Glenn Beck Is a Nut — But I Like Him

Question: You’ve appeared a few times on the Glenn Beck show. What do you think of him?

Penn Jillette: He’s a nut. I mean, he’s a deep, deep nut. On a one-on-one level I like him. My tolerance for crazy people is I think high a tolerance as you’re ever going to find. I love being around David Allen Coe. I would have loved to hang out with Tiny Tim. I can listen to Sun Ra on a tape-recording rant. I have… it’s not patience, it’s love for people who are… live outside the law. And Glenn Beck is that.

    Glenn Beck has evolved past this loser. Honestly, when I first saw him on Becks show I decided to watch his cable show. I was surprised Glenn would even be friends with this pervert. His show is filthy with not only language but inappropriate nudity.

    God-riddance to Penn. He can continue to make his stupid show aptly named Bull *hit.

      You know, I just don’t know why people get all bent out of shape over nudity or foul language. For the record I don’t run around nude and I reserve foul language for friends, jokes and work. I do, however, appreciate maintaining the capacity for certain words and terms to offend so that they might retain some measure of power and impact. Ultimately though i just find it rather silly. For instance…I can say ****** or I can say *****. I can say copulate or I can say ****. I can say excrement or I can say ****. You all know what words hide behind those asterisks. You know they are synonyms. So why all the fuss?

      It’s like the original political correctness. Sanitizing language does nothing. You know how they were Progressives and then they were Liberals and then they went back to Progressives…How long did they fool ya?

      News for you sensitive types that advocate the use of terms like ‘special needs’. In a generation or less there will be a slur based upon your sanitized language and it will be just as hurtful to you as was ‘retarded’. Or those that are offended by ‘gay’ being used to describe something silly or awful. You cannot claim ownership of a term, it is its own animal. It is the intent that matters and if one intends to slight you, they will. You can’t take a word like gay that once meant happy or aloof, change it to mean homosexual, and then expect it will never change again. That would just be ‘special needs’ of you to think that. Say copulate it

      I don’t agree with everything he says, but I respect Penn. Most of you guys are overreacting, he’s not insulting Glenn, if anything he’s giving him a compliment (although the Hitler comparison did put me off a bit). But Penn is kinda like Glenn in some ways. They’re both a bit unorthodox and think out of the box, but, and I don’t agree with everything about Penn, he’s honest. He might not be right, but he calls it as he sees it. He’s like Glenn in the respect that he tells the truth plain and simple. If he was like every other liberal he’d just be bashing him, but he doesn’t. He gives Glenn some points but criticizes him too. And he did make a good point on how you get to know a person if you listen to them often, and that if you don’t you miss their point. The whole context/character idea. Also, someone else made a point, you people are being too single-minded. If we just blindly attack anyone who makes a point that slightly differs from ours, what makes us any better then the liberals we criticize all the time? Glenn tells us to search for the truth and not just accept what we hear. That includes what he tells us. If we’re afraid to let someone with a differing opinion in, that shows how insecure we are in our convictions. I believe Penn and Glenn (haha just realized their names rhymed) have a mutual respect and understanding of the other, even if they don’t agree, and are both alike in that they believe in calling things how they see them. Alright, that’s all.

      The comments on here about this are really telling. Glenn has his Koolaid drinkers too apparently. Look at Penn’s policy statements over decades (not just the last couple of years) and you‘ll see he’s got to be 95% in line with Glenn, if not more. If you‘re going to go nuts like this on a guy who agrees with almost everything the Tea Party stands for just because he’s an atheist or because he said Glenn is a nut then good luck getting anything done. You’ll be a coalition of 25 bloggers arguing with each other. Like I said, lighten up and don‘t just reflexively defend when there’s really been no big attack against Glenn.

      Beck IS “crazy’ considering all the normal sheeple who have their heads buried. And considering he is screaming ‘THE SKY IS FALLING!!!” When in fact it is, but the majority of those listening won’t even look up from watching “Jersey Shore” or “American Idol”. So yes, Beck IS crazy. Crazy defined is only the differential between the status quo and those who “see”.

      Well I suppose we all cared to some degree since we all clicked on the story/clip. I thought it was a reasonable comment from someone on the left. ****Before you start in on me**** I am an Insider Extreme member of long standing & admire Glenn & crew a great deal! We shouldn’t become a cheerleading squad for Beck. If we don’t hear and listen to opposing viewpoints we could easily become to self-involved ideologically.

      If any of us are really honest we would admit that some of Glenn’s ideas are on the edge. I can only speak for myself…….. I like to hear well thought out opposing points of view. This guy disagrees he isn’t a whacko.

      It tickles my funny bone that so many people here are attacking Penn so harshly. His (and Teller’s) series on Showtime is very entertaining and highly informative, and Penn also has a great series of Youtube videos that are a logical continuation of the show. As a libertarian, I find myself agreeing with him on just about everything.

      Out of curiosity, how many of you have actually taken the time to watch his show or his Youtube videos? It seems to me that the biggest grievance most of you have with Penn is that he is an atheist, and in my opinion, being an atheist doesn’t automatically void you of any sense of morality or virtue. If you have checked his stuff out, you should be able to see that his opinions are really not that far off from Glenn’s on most major issues.

      Now, I see all these comments of people who are genuinely offended by Penn Gillette’s comments about Beck. You guys are that serious about Beck? He‘s told you he’s an entertainer if you’re listening.

      Penn’s a great guy. I wish that all liberal Libertarians were like him. We don’t have to agree with him to like him, just as he shows he doesn’t have to agree with Glenn to like him.

      Some of you here could learn a thing or two from that. Some of you don’t know how to disagree with someone without making it personal and condemning him. remember, Jesus ate with sinners, even Pharisees. He didn’t shun them.

      All of you who slam Penn are no better than anyone else that refuses to listen to a different point of view.
      Most of you would hate me because I do not subscribe to your beliefs in Jesus. I DO believe in God, unlike Penn, but not the Jesus thing.
      But I AM a Libertarian and as such will listen to anyone that is sensible in his beliefs and does not try to force those beliefs on the rest of us.
      I am sorry for those of you that act as Sheeple and follow blindly without doing your own research…read, study, and form opinion based on that research. I believe most of what Glenn says is coming because I have confirmed it from other sources.

      OK. 1st time to ever listen to Penn Jillette. But I have listened to both clips and realize that it is only two small clips that I am commenting on.

      First, I must admit that I did agree with him on several comments. Mostly that you need to watch someone for months to really get to know them, what they stand for, and who they really are.

      Second, and probably the most problematic for me is how he would refer to Glenn saying “stuff that is reprehensible” and “outrageous things” and having “some very bad ideas” without specifically telling us WHAT Glenn said that was “outrageous”, “reprehensible”, and “very bad” that he is referring to.

      Glenn is a good, honorable, courageous, and kind man. I will stand next to him as long as he remains that way. God bless him in all he does. THE TRUTH HAS NO AGENDA – Glenn Beck

      Glenn is not crazy, at least in one respect. He’s made money to last a lifetime, millions and millions, with an entertaining personality and a message of fear, paranoia, end-of-world beliefs and hatred of the “others” – anyone with a different opinion or color or religion as the people who love him. It’s a time honored career, and he’s following in the footsteps of many Americans who have come before him, people history has all discredited, like Joseph McCarthy and Father Coughlin. He has their charisma and he has made it big. Good for him.

      And he’s made the money off of many you. The only problem he has is that advertisers think he’s crazy (and wouldn’t advertise on his show), and Ailes thought he was crazy. But if you want to send him money and become his close friend and get his newsletter, go for it.

      I think the real stories of the week could be revisited and made some sense out of …Blaze and the Miss Huff Post Glenn pays to run it….. here is a free idea for you. Completely out of the New York box your lost in…..Instead of having Sunday as a SNL or comedy rerun..Use it as a story link day.. Example .So you have the Christians being killed and tortured Raped in Egypt..The TSA completely out of control…More Muslim extremists leaders taken out in other countries by our military..Libya who even know what the hell is happening there or happened to their stock pile of surface to air missiles lost to the Muslim brother hood..So one of the real story of the week is the complete bankruptcy of this nation monetarily and morally and with the lost of freedom and liberties …All because ..We self gratified instead of killing off our enemy…Write that story each Sunday..You could call it the Week in review ..On the war with Islam…Include the dead count on both sides. So we know if were winning or loosing..

      One thing you all must understand here is that the majority of Penn’s exposure to Glenn is based upon outtakes, edits and false attributions as it is with most people. Everyone, and I really mean EVERYONE, I’ve ever met that hates Glenn or Fox news never actually watches it or has watched it. They only see the edits and jokes on The Daily Show or the late shows. They only read the misquotes and out of context material on the networks. Most importantly, 80% of people are followers…sheep if you will. If they hear something enough times it must be true. Case in point, most Glenn haters think he is anti-semitic. Those that watch even part time know that this is completely false. So it is with everything else. The only people that truly hate Glenn are the marxists and communists with whom there is a diametrically opposed viewpoint. They in turn activate the mass media machinery to slander, smear and dehumanize those they disagree with. Then the sheeple do what the sheeple do- they follow. It is fashionable to hate Glenn and sheeple love to be fashionable. It gives them validation to exist in the herd, even as they leap over the cliff…

      I watch Glenn‘s show and I watch Penn’s show. I‘m not sure what ’reprehensible’ comment Penn is referring to but I can tell you that they are in agreement with one another about 99% of the time. They both have strong personalities which is the main requirement to being the ‘crazy uncle’. They also both have strong convictions and know who they are and what they believe in. This in itself puts most people off because that is such an alien condition to them. Many people have beliefs but seldom are they hardened into convictions, so they waver and hesitate in the face of opposition. They haven‘t tested their beliefs so they can’t forcefully stand for them. Those that have conviction often come across negatively to the large majority who do not. This is especially true when your message is one of warning, or ‘impending doom’ if you will. Essentially, nobody likes a party pooper. Also, those that speak doom are often wrong or completely off their rocker. Unfortunately Glenn is spot on, but it is a reality that few are willing to believe, even as he implores them to find out for themselves. It’s like that tupperware dish at the back of the fridge with the mystery leftovers inside. It‘s much easier to let it sit and fester rather than deal with it and when it finally comes down to a ’have to’ case, how often would you just toss out the whole thing rather than contend with whats been growing inside for so long? Is this the fate of our nation? Probably.

      Penn’s rant was a job stabilizing one, he says that he does not agree with Beck on some issues. Which ones? Beck is a libertarian, take the guy for his words just as he takes the liberals for their words. If you listen to Beck he is without a doubt, libertarian.

      I bet if they went from issue to issue, Penn would agree with Beck 90% of the time.

I don’t agree with everything Penn has to say, and that’s fine. With the show ********, he argued against some things I really enjoy, but he also fueled my arguments for both sides with his information.
