Wikileaks Defies U.S. Order, Releases Classified Files

The online website WikiLeaks unveiled hundreds of thousands of classified State Department documents Sunday in defiance of U.S. government and military demands not to publish the files. According to the Associated Press, the WikiLeaks website appeared to be inaccessible early Sunday and the group reported in its Twitter feed that the leaked documents would be printed in the U.S. and Europe if they could not be posted online.
The Obama administration has been bracing for the documents’ release for the past week. Upon today’s release, the White House immediately denounced the decision to release the classified files, claiming they may endanger U.S. diplomats and intelligence agents. Included among the documents are off-the-record candid assessments of some foreign leaders and governments — characterizations that threaten to undermine U.S. standing in the international community.
The White House says many of the documents reflect initial reports that are “often incomplete” and don’t always shape final policy decision. In addition, the Obama administration denounced the stunt as “reckless and dangerous” and considers the classified files “stolen.”
The Pentagon is also taking steps to shield itself from the document leak and says it has tightened security procedures since WikiLeaks’ last document dump. The Defense Department also announced Sunday new efforts its taking to prevent future unauthorized releases.
Since August, the Pentagon has changed its rules of file transfers utilizing flash drives or similar data storage memos, spokesman Bryan Whitman said Sunday. It has also changed the way classified materials are moved to and from unclassified computer systems, hopefully making it more difficult for an individual to steal secrets.
An Army specialist is reportedly the prime suspect in the latest theft of some of the materials.

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 5:56pmIt looks like Glenn was right on the money about Google. check out this paragraph i found on NYT about the wikileaks….. ¶ A global computer hacking effort: China’s Politburo directed the intrusion into Google’s computer systems in that country, a Chinese contact told the American Embassy in Beijing in January, one cable reported. The Google hacking was part of a coordinated campaign of computer sabotage carried out by government operatives, private security experts and Internet outlaws recruited by the Chinese government. They have broken into American government computers and those of Western allies, the Dalai Lama and American businesses since 2002, cables said.

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 6:30pmOf course China has been hacking us for a long time. They steal anything not nailed down, and then some. Bank accounts of private citizens, trade secrets of businesses they can use to game our stock market and stealing any technology they can from our government/military.
Part of the “Art of War” is to use the wealth and resources of your enemy against your enemies rather than fighting them directly. China has been doing that to us for awhile. There was a reason the chinese diplomat handed Bush the book, Art of War to him publicly at the white house a few years ago. It was China letting us know, they already beat us. They have been at war with us for years yet our government acts like China is our best friend publicly.
I hope more eyes open to the truth of the matter, and soon.

Do we really believe that millions of documents could get copied and NO ONE notices?
I was in Europe when a foolish young Marine guard at the US Embassy in Moscow got involved with a Russian woman and took her inside.

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, the soldier accused of leaking classified data while serving in Iraq, apparently disguised the data as a music CD by Lady Gaga in order to smuggle it past military security, according to a report from the New York Times.
[-----]
Former hacker Adrian Lamo said Manning confessed to him that he leaked the video to the website Wikileaks, as well as a second classified video of the infamous 2009 Garani airstrike in Afghanistan. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has said his organization has the video and is working to decrypt it.
Sources told NYT that Manning hummed and lip-synched to songs to make it appear he was using the classified computer’s CD player to listen to music. In reality, he was downloading classified data in violation of the law.

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 9:02pmWow, has everyone here read all these “leaked” documents?
I think for the sake of our credibility and humility we should not indulge in these conversations without first knowing EXACTLY what was leaked and what was said.
It’s easy to jump off the handle and scream treason, but lets get our ducks in a row first and be completely prepared to fight this battle before taking to the field.
If you are Beck supporters you should know that research is key and the most important aspect of any argument. We can all talk it, but can we back it up?
RESEARCH first people.

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 11:23pmI just recently rewatched “V for Vendetta”. I have to ask, how many of you knuckleheads cheered for the fingermen, appreciated the roving surveillance and were celebrating when people were black backed.
A lot of you wish we could just black bag this guy, don’t you. Yea. That’d solve this problem we have. Let’s black back the SOB! Hey big brother, I give you the power to black bag this scumbag, torture him and bury him in a shallow grave because he did something that just cannot be tolerated by the high chancellor, I mean fuhrer, I mean messiah, I mean by the GOP. It’s not like you have a history for over using and over reaching the powers given to you, right?
I feel like we’re about to live a bad remake of “V for Vendetta”. Oh yes, I enjoyed that movie a lot.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 12:35amJust something to question. Supposedly the info was leaked to wikileaks by the gay soldier mad about the break up with his boyfriend (ok, having a bad relationship day makes most people put their whole country in danger, right?!). There are reports in NYT article on this leak that say some of the documents were from as recent as this past February – hasn’t the “soldier” been detained much longer than that? It was also reported he smuggled the info onto a disc he had labeled ‘Lady Gaga’ – the number of documents dumped THIS TIME would have taken MANY cd’s. I have been very suspicious about the TRUE origination of this leak for a while. Most in the military know that this kind of information is not readily available to most soldiers (especially ranking private first class) even if they have a Top Secret Clearance. Just sayin’ – sounds fishy!

I’ll leave you to your phone taps, your torture, your black bagging, you’re eye in the sky as long as I feel warm and fussy at night life.
I find it funny that some of you cry for freedom but willing give up your freedom for some illusion of safety. I believe someone wiser than all of us said something similar to those words back from our nations founding. I ask myself, “Would our Founding Fathers be proud of what we’ve done with their hard work?” My answer is almost always a resounding NO.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 3:07amWikiLeaks did not steal/take the documents. They had nothing whatsoever to do with who or how or from where they were obtained. WikiLeaks is a clearinghouse for whistle-blowers to get their information out to the public without reprisals.
If Glenn Beck were to anonymously receive leaked government documents proving…oh, just for a hypothetical example…that Obama and Spooky Dood planned to start a war as a domestic political distraction…would you want the government to assassinate Glenn for receiving and publishing them?
If you grant the government power to kill/kidnap/harm Assange for publishing *already-leaked* documents, they can and WILL use that power on people you *do* agree with who *are* the “good guys”.
Does anyone remember the Pentagon Papers and Woodward and Bernstein? Did they *cause* the leaks? Would killing them have stopped anything, or would the original leaker simply have found another outlet?
If you destroy the ability of the press to publish things the government doesn’t want published, you‘ve gutted the press’s ability to be the guardians as the Founders envisioned. The leak had already happened before WL received the documents.
The documents were available to approximately *3 MILLION PEOPLE* on SIPRNET. Now, with all the news of late regarding how China and other countries have been stealing us blind with spies both inside and outside our government, don’t you think that any foreign government that wanted the information already had it long ago?
If so many lives were at stake, why the H*** were they placed on a relatively low-security network where a *freakin’ Specialist 1st Class*(!!) could access them? Not only access them, but was allowed to copy and transfer them out of the facility? Don’t you think that any foreign government that wanted them could have gotten them with little problem?
This is not the fault of WikiLeaks or Assange. If they hadn’t been released there, they would have been released elsewhere.
This is the same thing as a newspaper being given sensitive documents here in the US. Would you like Obama to have the power to assassinate journalists? How long do you think it would take for Obama, the unions, Spooky Dood, etc to use those powers to “take out” Glenn?
The same powers to they would need/use to “take out” Assange/WikiLeaks are the same powers that would be used to “take out” any other journalist/reporter/blogger/news outlet/etc.
Remember also that much of this “countless lives at risk” talking-points stuff was heard with the last WikiLeaks document release. I have heard of no deaths as a result. Not even a “I heard from sources” claim of deaths as a result. And the previous leaks DID directly concern military operations.
This leak appears to only concern US diplomat’s chatter about other foreign leaders and diplomats…”the leader of so-and-so appears to be in very poor health“ or ”this guy is an a**hole” type of talk. Unless some country wants to declare war on us for an insult from some low-level diplomatic attache’s assistant, I don’t think too many lives are at risk. This is CYA and a perceived chance to expand their control over what we can see, hear, and publish by inflaming people enough to grant them additional power over news and the internet.
Even Glenn has said that if they get control over the internet, we’ve lost. Is shooting the messenger worth losing the battle for a return to the America we love?
Save your ammo, guys. We have bigger and more important battles to fight, rather than helping Obama and the Progressives silence one of the only places where people can see and read things the government doesn’t want you to see or read.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 9:01amThere is a huge scam afoot. I’m surprised so many folks on here I respect as patriots and wise citizens are falling for this.
They‘re counting on you all returning to your patriotic senses of the America we’re all longing for, to want to hunt down the “traitor” with swift justice.
Stop and consider the ramifications of this. What will come of this? Democrat and GOP congresscritters passing a “bipartisan” bill allowing the government to squash any website they deem a “risk.” Is that Glenn’s website? Is that your blog? Is it mine? Who get‘s to decide what’s a risk? The majority of these top secret cables are nothing earth shattering…they’re filled with intel we all know, now it’s just confirmed.
Saudis funding terrorism…derrrrr.
China attempting to hack anything with an extension cord and more than 5MB of memory…duhhhhh.
NoKo selling weapons to any buyer…doyyyyyy.
Spying on other countries at the UN…would you expect anything else?
Two wars raged on. Obama played golf. The Gulf filled with oil. Obama played golf. The economy burned. Obama took a vacation. The “worst” diplomatic foul-up in American history. Obama played basketball.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Either Obama and his crew are hell bent on screwing this country and “fundamentally transforming America,” or we’re all wrong and Obama really does care about this country and the “grave concern” over these leaks prove his administrations care. Which is it.
Wake up, you’re all being played…again.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 9:28amFor those of you wasting your time arguing with “AmericanSoldier”, don’t bother. In my 20 years in the Army, I’ve run into a few of his kind, very few, but they are out there. My guess is he “joined for the college money”, chose the wrong job (or wasn’t qualified for a good job), has become disgruntled because he figured out it isn’t the joy ride his recruiter promised, and now hasn’t the fortitude to go the distance. But he’ll brag about his “service” and tell all kinds of “war stories” to whoever will listen. I’m always a little wary of those guys who have a war story for everything. Just for the record, I served 3 tours in Iraq before retiring honorably with just over 20 years of service, got a lot of war stories, but I generally keep them to myself. If you were there, you already know. If you weren’t, you probably wouldn’t understand anyhow. As for “AmericanSoldier”, why don’t you change your UserID to something else. When you use that monaker and spout some of the stuff you do, it makes the rest of us look bad. Just like when you wear the uniform off base and act like an idiot in public, it makes the rest of us look bad. I imagine you have some experience with that.

Excellent point however, the serves are located outside of the country and they have been moved several times. Please don’t mistake this for me giving the administration a pass on this but, shutting this down is not as easy as some may think.

You need to calm down and think carefully. Read my post above.
You’re doing what Glenn has cautioned everyone about. You’re letting the Progressives get you mad enough to do their bidding without thinking things through. If that weren’t bad enough, you‘re also allowing them to turn us against one another by attacking American Soldier all because you’ve not done your homework.
Again, read my post above, take a break…pray…think bigger picture. Far be it for me to judge anyone, but I think if you take time out to do your own research like Glenn is always telling us, you might want to apologize to American Soldier. He’s done his homework for the nation he loves, and you jumped the gun and have allowed yourself to be played just like Obama and the Progressives are hoping we all would.
Just trying to keep us all together here and on the same page.
Don’t let the Progressives drive you to the Dark Side of the force, Luke.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 10:31am@WILDBLUYONDER11 Actually, I joined because I was an ideological Republican wanting to kill as many terrorist as I could get my hands on. I bought into the hype. They hate us for our freedom! I cheered for President Bush and wanted to do my part. So I joined the Infantry, wanting to create a nice little list of confirmed Terrorist killed. Oh yes, I did become disgruntled. At the entire establishment. At the very reason for being there. Did we have reason to go initially, yes, but the job has long been done. Since when has Conservatives believed in nation building? I thought that was a Liberal thing to want.
For the record, I never spouted off war stories, so don’t judge before you know me.
I’m sorry if thinking that 10 years of war is long enough. I’m sorry if thinking that big government is not very soldierly of me. It’s a shame. I could have just been another cookie cutter soldier, ready to carry out any order given to me, even it it means going against American citizens.
I am not that soldier but I am proud of my service, of my individual accomplishments. I am not, however, proud of where my country has gone and where it continues to go. If that makes me a bad soldier, then so be it. If that’s the price of being considered a “good” soldier, I pay it gladly.

THey tend to have relatively quick solutions for these type abuses of free press.
Maybe the next round of air to Israel could include the request for a little errand from Mossad??
