‘People Do That Every Sunday’: S.E. Cupp Defends Palin Praying Against Daily Show Co-Creator

In the aftermath of the revelation that a particularly ham-handed Republican donor was thinking of resurrecting the Jeremiah Wright narrative for this year’s election, MSNBC couldn’t resist bringing on a collection of its favorite (mostly liberal) contributors to bemoan the idea. Unfortunately for those contributors, S.E. Cupp was among them, which meant a little critical thinking was going to also be involved.

For those expecting a fire-breathing performance from Cupp, though, there was also disappointment. Cupp was relatively subdued throughout most of the segment, and agreed with the contributors involved that the proposed move was a terrible idea. However, as anyone who’s watched the Mercury contributor knows to be the case, there are some things S.E. won’t put up with, and religious bigotry is probably the prime example.

To that end, Cupp pointed out – pointedly – that the Left was also known for trying to scare average Americans using this or that politician’s unconventional faith. And rather than go for the obvious point about mainstream media displays of anti-mormon bigotry, Cupp instead chose to go straight for the jugular and point out how many savagely unfair attacks had been made against Sarah Palin’s religion when she was running for Vice-President.

This prompted one of the other contributors – Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead – to react with something between incredulity and horror. Surely Cupp wasn’t suggesting that the media had an obligation to be fair to people like that?

“I would say there’s videotape,” Winstead began, “of Sarah Palin at a church with a person praying over her…”

“So?” Cupp fired back.

“What I’m saying is, that does scare people,” said Winstead.

“Praying scares people?”

“There’s a difference,” Winstead countered weakly before Cupp shot her down completely.

“People do that every Sunday,” said Cupp.

Watch the exchange here, courtesy of Mediaite:

Now, in the interests of fairness, it should be noted that Winstead wasn’t hallucinating about that video of Palin with a person praying over her. However, the reason the video in question was notable wasn’t because prayer was involved. It was because of what the pastor in the video was praying for. For those wanting a quick refresher, you can watch the original video below:

So the issue was that Palin was being prayed over by a man who apparently still believed witches exist. However, as Hot Air’s AllahPundit noted at the time:

Why prayers about witchcraft would be deemed alarmingly kooky or outre when prayers about angels, demons, or Satan are perfectly mundane and unexceptional escapes me, but then an atheist wouldsay that, wouldn’t he? Meanwhile, Bill Donohue, as quoted by Tapper, makes a level-headed point (for once) about how different cultures understand evil. Is it really shocking that a guy who comes from a part of the world where they believe in witchcraft would pray for protection from it? Was Palin supposed to have run screaming from the altar when he mentioned it rather than have stood there politely and waited for him to finish?

Quite right. And to drive the point home even further, which is the more unacceptable superstition? That witches exist, or that America should be struck down to hell because it’s not a socialist country? Winstead’s obviously right that this video scares people, but as to whether those people are “average Americans”? Unlikely.

The dangerous reality of the left is that they are materialists and as such, are oblivious to the supernatural evil they serve. Their ignorance will not go unpunished. At some point they will understand that they are at war with God and that knowing hell is seeing the truth too late.

Have watched SC Cupp on Fox for years… She is articulate and very incisive. During the past year, I havent’s seen her…that vacancy happened about the same time that Beck left to form GBTV… the new guy took over the Fox news division…and Rupert Murdock and NewsCorp were targeted for by the Globalists through the British. The obvious result is O’Reiley Report becoming glorified pablum with about half of the show being “funny” brain dead gameshow and commedy routines.

That Cupp is showing up on CNN and MSNBC rather than Fox…actually speaks for itself. She is really outstanding but hard conservative…and FOXnews has obviously taken a hard turn to the middle….

Wish I could afford to subscribe to GBTV…but like most of the White american males over 50 I am out of a job and without the funds… Ah well… welcome to the joys of tbe French rerevolution starting this summer…

      {Sigh…does anyone ever dig for their history…even when it is repeating itself right before their eyes}

      She is needed more on the leftist news network ;
From the right view – to present a case for reality
From the left view – to both allow themselves to say that they allow all views to be presented AND give the rest of the panel a conservative viewpoint face to target, ridicule and discredit.

Notice how, when SE Cupp makes obvious and undeniable points that reveal the leftist rhetoric as being pompous manure that clearly makes SE’s point by itself, the host jumps in and attempts to stir the pot and drive the conversation back to leftist territory.

SE Cupp was very clever to sit like a timid little, outnumbered realist/ conservative and then hand them their own hypocracy on a platter.

      Nice work.

… and she may be an athiest, but she holds the governing principles of Christians. You know; the ones that work!

Right prayer does scare wicked because they might be the target. Jesus told us to pray for our enemies and that is hard . You know I would rather break their jaw but God wants me to pray for blessings upon them. Only he knows if they will change .I can’t change them. But sometimes. Their evil intent falls back on them. I have seen this happen. Without God we are all open to attack from satan. Yeah growing up it was easier to punch first and shut their trap. Oh and when a guy would pick on a girl man they. Got it twice as bad. But that was then and know Gods word says to pray. So let’s pray. Pray for america pray for our children and grandchildren pray for your family pray for your friends pray for your enemies. Time is short. Pray for forgivness.

Witchcraft is alive and well today and is being practiced by many people in high places. The art of concealment is something that “they” have perfected, so well that most ‘well educated, well meaning’ people do not believe that witchcraft exists. the cartoonish characters seen every halloween are not of course what they look like. If one defines witchcraft as the manipulation of people and events by whatever means available, especially drugs, and all for personal gain (incidentally that is a fairly accurate definition biblically speaking) then you need look no further than Washington DC to see some of the best at the “craft” as they call it. There is power in the spoken word and that is why the non-believing, unbelieving world is uncomfortable with prayer because it is the call of the faithful to God to intervene in the affairs of humankind. The spirit realm waits on the words of men and women to act. The Bible speaks of blessings and cursings; both come out of the same mouth James says. What a person utters gives wings as it were to which angelic realm gets to work. So, be careful what you say…

Do not bring up Reverend Wright but remind people what OBAMA believes. OBAMA agrees with Reverend Wright. His name does not have to be mentioned. He ideas must be talked about. OBAMA says what Americans want to hear,(while putting them to sleep), but under cover his actions coincide with what Reverend Wright believes. Someone ask how raising taxes will solve America’s economic problems. How expanding the size of government will be successful. If he cannot explain it thoroughly with graphs and charts, he does not know what he is doing.

His talents would have been far more suitable as a voice reading children’s bedtime stories. He could have actually solved parents problems. Getting their toddlers to fall asleep.

Yes, hosts on TV shows wear earpieces connected to the director in the control room. Everybody does that. No, they weren’t afraid of her, but they werent’ going to let her derail the current political discussion by bringing up the supposed martyrdome of Sarah Palin four years ago. Sarah Palin proved herself to be a poor choice for Republicans and it is Republicans who have said the worst about her. And her thin-skinned responses are even more proof of her lack of fitness for the office. The other people on the show were not scared of the massive brilliance and intelligence of S.E. Cupp, they were probably wondering what she was doing there in the first place. She fits in about as well as Alan Colmes on Fox, and she gets about as much respect as he gets, which is to say, not a lot and not deserved. And I have to tell you, Sarah being prayed over by some witch-believing African preacher who was there to get more funds for his church didn’t play well with independents and folks in the middle in either party. Most churches would not have invited such an extreme speaker into their midst.

I pray that God’s will be done because I also believe that God has a predetermined plan for each of us. All of us are important in God’s plan. He granted us free will to choose the right path, or the wrong path. Those on the wrong path, often suffer the consequences quite early. This a nudging from God. Open up your eyes, heart and mind. The gift of life is a miracle. I respect the Mormon faith (I’m not a member of it), because true believers don’t smoke, drink, or use recreational drugs. Have you had “prayers” answered? If so, why do you think they were answered?

Have you had “prayers” go unanswered? If so, why do you think they went unanswered?

Do you praise your God when a prayer is answered?

Do you curse your God when a prayer goes unanswered?

If in any of your answers you mention the will of your God, your “prayers” are irrelevant. Also, who are you to ask your God to change his will on your behalf? Shouldn’t you ALWAYS be satisfied with the will of your God? Shouldn’t you always trust that he has your best interest at heart? Therefore, why ask your God to change it? Surely you aren’t claiming to know better then your God what is best for you?

From the sequence of questions you listed I think you imply “inshallah” which means God’s willing in Arab. Do you mean that? That doesn’t make sense and is un-biblical.

Hezekiah‘s prayer isn’t that a proof that G-d’s willing can be changed if a prayer is given? Of course it doesn’t mean He changes His mind by prayer but it means G-d is willing to change His mind under HIS AGENDA. (I think G-d is the ONLY ONE allows to have AGENDA)

Your theology has flaws. G-d can have HIS own free-will; that is, HE can do whatever HE likes. So HE is more than willing to change HIS will on our behalves, if our behalves fit HIS AGENDA!

Also, you said “God has his own agenda” and “God can do whatever he likes”

So what you‘re saying is that I don’t have free will? I only have free will in the confines of God’s agenda? Is that what you are implying? Because if so I would say that it‘s not even free will and I don’t see who would construe it as such.

Do I have true free will when I’m threatened with punishment if I make the wrong choice?

So what you are saying is that abhorrently evil things like murder, theft, rape, genocide are OKAY as long as God orders it(which he did numerous times throughout the Bible). Then again, that was mostly in the old Testament so I would likely hear back “THAT DOESN’T COUNT!“ or ”THAT WAS DIFFERENT TIMES!”

The countless extermination of groups of people by other people, or groups of people by natural disasters are OKAY because “hey, it‘s God’s will”? I can‘t see how people could think absolutely horrible things and also somehow deem that it’s “good” or “moral” or “righteous” or “justified.” It’s pure evil.

An all powerful God whose evil actions are automatically counted as just and righteous simply because he is God deserves NO input on the conversations of morality.

For some reason, I cannot believe that a statistician believes in the power of prayer. Maybe a statistician could believe in god and go to church every once in while, but they don’t really believe the literal bible and only go to church to see friends and such. You could be a elementary school math teacher, that teaches your kids about percentages and ratios, but not a statistician. You see, a statistician knows about probabilities and I can’t think of anything so improbable as religious doctrine…It’s not an insult on religion, it’s just the facts. That’s why it relies so heavily on faith. So, either you are a bad statistician, a teacher of basic math who has self-esteem issues, or maybe you are just saying that’s your job so people give some respect to your assertion that you KNOW prayer works.

No, I understand your paradoxical loop, and I‘m saying it’s idiotic.

You then answered none of my questions or addressed any of my claims.

Also, how does your being a statistician have any relevance here? We aren’t dealing with numbers or stats or anything of the sort. Did you feel the need to throw that in there thinking that it would give you some kind of higher ground on issues of logic, rationality and common sense? You may know what logic is, but you don’t practice.

Also, my original arguments were questions geared towards an individual and you felt the need to interject with your interpretation of what you thought I was saying based on how you were taught about your religion. There are MANY people who believe they ARE changing the will of God when they have a prayer answered. They are ACTIVELY believing they are changing their God’s mind. How silly is that? I then went on to make logical conclusions if they at any time wanted to try to simply use “God’s will” that God’s will should always suffice and their pleadings are irrelevant. Also, since God is all knowing, prayer is IRRELEVANT!. He knows you will pray for it, and if he knows you will pray for it and he will answer it…….then it’s part of his will. On the other side, he knows you will pray for it, and if he knows he won’t answer it, then it’s a part of his will. Your prayer is irrelevant. You’ve set up a nice little win-win here.

It’s a sick joke, it really is

@NLITEND1 you amuse me… I have no idea to believe in prayer makes me a bad statistician. Also please show your respect to teachers for their hard efforts (but I think not all of them though) in elementary schools. For me I don’t mind to be call a bad statistician but it offenses me to teach math course in elementary school implies bad statistician.

Statistics is divine. We, as human can only work thing and analyse thing through careful data collection and do quantified conclusion from it. For those who have some basic understanding on what statistics is all about, all conclusions draw by statistics are valuable but suffer with possible error. You can ignore error, just like signal transformation between device to device always suffer white noise. The limitation of Statistics is always there. Probability constructs the frame work of Statistics. Mathematical model can’t describe all data in the world. Limitation of science reasoning is always there. You cannot worship Sciences, they are simply a discipline. That’s it!

Statistician tells you something with association but causation. So this is not a contradiction to believe in power of prayer as a statistician. I see a lot of outliers in Statistics after all.

@Adelee, Okay, I’m an outsider on this exchange. I happen to be a devout Catholic, I do believe in the benefits of prayer. I don‘t view prayer as a lucky rabbit’s foot or a Christmas list to God. Prayer is self-reflection and a personal dialogue with God. Because I believe this way, I often side with Atheists and non-Christians because I don’t understand people like you any more than they do. I’m not telling you that you are wrong or not entitled to your own beliefs, but I‘m telling you that I don’t relate and don’t want to relate to such a constricted world view. As to your being a statistician, I don‘t see how it’s relevant. Statisticians are bound by mathematical proof, by demonstrable results, by measurable facts. How do you prove the existence of God with statistics? You can talk about how many people around the world believe in God or a god, but you can’t prove there is a God. And if you want to make the argument that so many people can’t be wrong, you are putting up the logical fallacy of Reductio Ad Popularum. Your argument is illogical and statistically invalid. And your grammar is shaky which makes figuring out your points more than a little difficult.

Queer has come to cover a broad swath of people, from not only Gays and Lesbians but Transgender, Bisexual, Polyamorous and their friends and family. Corn is married with children, but he may very well be Queer friendly, in that he is able to accept and appreciate, and to be accepted and appreciated by the Queer community. If he is Queer in that sense, he wouldn’t find himself insulted by their company, but he would recognize your attempted insult and feel sorry for you.

Of course, prayer scare libs. They are without God and have no understanding about the things of God; nor do they wish to. Sucks for them.

I was reading on this site that what is really scary, is when muslims pray 6 times a day. So logically, praying is only good when you pray for christian things, right? I also read on the blaze how many people were praying for ‘bad’ things to happen to obama, so it must be okay to pray for christian things and to pray for harm to befall your enemies. Maybe prayer is a bit misunderstood because I don’t like these rules.

      @Nlitend1
I infer from your smarmy comments that you think secularists have the moral high ground. Only they are ENLIGHTENED right? ALL Christians are bigots, right? They ALL hate Muslims and atheists, right? Wait, I forgot Gay and Lesbian too. So they just hate everybody.
Yep, they wanna kill all Muslims. Wait, no that’s not true. They just don’t want Islam to destroy them. And Christians are not strapping bombs on to go kill Muslims. Oh, but they ALL definitely hate Gay and Lesbians. They believe marriage should be between a man and a woman. Well that’s definitely hate right there. Wait, no that doesn’t qualify as hate unless you drastically alter the meaning of hate.

As for the moral high ground, this atheist will take people of faith any day over fundamental secularism. I’m not fond of militant religions like secular fundamentalists. And I have very little tolerance for atheists that have to stroke their own ego by demeaning people of faith. It’s nauseating and very child like.

@Nlitend1 – Actually, muslims don’t pray at all. They chant stuff memorized from the koran. It’d be like me memorizing bible verses and the preacher getting up and saying,”Ok, today we are going to chant Matthew 1:1-7 three times.” That’s what muslims do – chant verses. They never pray to their diety – ever. They have no relationship with their al-lah. Period.

The little weasel wanna be psychologist Dick Wolfe on the left is trying to interject thought into the viewer by spouting of talking points at slightly higher volume levels in between saying absolutely nothing at all. David Corn is trying to paint a conspiricy theory. What the host means by “Best part” is that it can be used to spin the narrative into a conspiricy theory. C-cup wooped up on these faux journalists. ! The bimbo to the right of the host confessed who these people really are. They fear prayer! Then the conspiricy moron theorist starts again, mind you, for the purpose of convincing the viewer that it is a conspiricy, he also confesses when he mentions the other, if you listen closely. Then they finish with “Right wing” blah. Well you know, there is a conspiricy and we are coming! We will be voting in 20112!!!!

I think you need to be saved from your really STUPID argument. GOP senators voted to raise the debt ceiling multiple time so now, with 15 trillion in debt and 65 trillion in unfunded liabilities, they should still vote to raise the debt ceiling. Uh, ha ha. Uh, ha ha. Drool.
This is actually a great argument to vote Republican. At least they aren’t pushing national suicide. It is sad some people have trouble with critical thought and some are even allowed to drive. Inches and feet from you at times or hurtling toward you in the other lane.
      Shudders!

Prayer is a very strong tool in this world; if you are actually praying to the one and only God; in the name of Jesus Christ. Any other so-called prayer would be as you say, only therapeutic.

There is but one Bible, one God, one Christ. Anything else is a religion that does not depend on a Saviour. A person is either lost or saved. Obviously, some are unreachable. Such is life, I guess.

No, people believing in superstitions and hocus pocus as legitimate prayer bothers us. I’ve been around some pretty crazy Christians in my time. I’ve seen Bible-thumpers who invoke Bible verses like some magical spell, who rub their prayers like a rabbit’s foot, and attempt to ward off the rest of us like we’re vampires by waving a cross or a Bible or the Ten Commandments in our faces. And then there are the ones who use some books of the Bible like a Ouija Board. Sorry, I don’t really relate to that kind of “praying”. I don’t think it is any more Christian than some old movie “Witch Doctor”. I will grant you, though, it is often wise to run from such people because they usually can’t be reasoned with and they often use their concept of God to punish people who disagree with them.

Desertrose1960. A couple of points. First, Sarah Palin, is what brought more republicans to the polls. If she wasn’t there The liberal republican, John McCain would have lost by so much more. Secondly; The main problem is when this country turned into a “secular” country. The country was founded in faith. Yes, prayer is important. And I know you can’t understand this but the bible is the true word. I know you probably believe that there was a big bang and we were created from that bang. I pray for the haters and the nonbelievers in the world.
