Perry Blows Correct Count of Supreme Court Justices…Plus One Key Name

DES MOINES (AP) — Presidential contender Rick Perry said there are eight Supreme Court justices, not nine, and flubbed Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s (SOHN’-ya soh-toh-my-YOR’) name in an editorial board meeting at The Des Moines Register.

Perry met with the board Friday. He struggled for six seconds to come up with Sotomayor’s name, then initially called the justice “Montemayor.” A member of the newspaper’s editorial board helped him out with the correct name.

He went on to criticize “eight unelected and frankly unaccountable judges.” Nine justices sit on the Supreme Court. They are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

Similar gaffes have plagued Perry. On Thursday in South Carolina, he corrected himself after saying the U.S. is at war in Iran instead of Iraq.

Now I am not a Perry for President fan. However, he is right there is only one judge on the supreme count that is accountable and elected (as far as electing a supreme court justice goes). Justice Thomas is the only Supreme Court Justice that went through proper vetting. I will go one step further and say he went through unnecessary taunting and badgering by the left Senate. If was disgraceful. Watch the hearing. It will make your stomach turn. This is why I defend Herman Cain, and Sarah Palin. When the left gets its teeth in, they are ruthless.

His other comment on Sotomayor’s name. LOL……..

There is a reason I never claimed “perfect” people exist–they don’t. However, I would venture to guess that every other Republican candidate would have no problem naming all 9 Supreme Court justices.

Rick Perry has shown time and time again that he does not even have a very basic understanding of our system of government, our history, and the key players in the government today. Therefore, I don’t really care what a “good ol’ boy” he is, he doesn’t deserve to be president.

Yeah, that totally explains it. But does it also explain how he forgot which department of the federal government he would eliminate, and how he did not know what the voting age was, and how he got the date of the election wrong, and how he thought that the revolutionary war was fought in the 16th century, and how he thought that New Hampshire had caucuses instead of primaries, and how he confused Iraq and Iran.

No, I’m sure there is a reasonable excuse for each and every one of those mistakes, because it couldn’t possibly be that he is just not fit to be president.

Obama blew the number of states in the United States during the 2008 primary cycle. Saying there are 58 states is even worse than saying there are 8 Supreme Court justices.

Actually he said there were 57 states and if people would have known what he was referring to maybe we wouldn’t have him in the whitehouse. He was refering to The Organization of Islamic Conference Member States Currently, the OIC has 57 member and 3 observer states according to their website today. Obama has always been a closet muslim I fear, that’s why the slip of tongue or was it more then that?

Don’t forget Satan will latch on and tear the faithful apart. He is the only one that has gotten an ad on the air that shows Whom THE REAL LEADER IS. I truly believe Satan is attacking Perry bc of his faith and we ignore the real message he tries to send. Perry may not ever be our president but all would benefit if they listen to what he is trying to say. He needs a teleprompter, but then again it may be the wrong one feeding the words into it, so I will take the gaffes and choose to hear only the message.

    Just to play devils advocate…

How many fingers do you have 10 or 8? Some people will say 10. Others will say 8 and 2 thumbs.

In the same light you could say there are 8 or 9 Justices… 9 Justices OR 8 Associate Justices and 1 Chief Justice. (Take a look at the Court’s web site, About, Brief Overview.)

So, you think Perry meant that there is one justice that IS elected and IS accountable? That is the only possibly way to read it under your interpretation.

Perry messed this one up big time.

By the way, to all those that will inevitably compare this to the famous “57 states” quote by President Obama–There is a difference between misspeaking and just not knowing the answer. If you watch the whole video, it is apparent the President meant to say 47 and misspoke. I am even willing to believe Perry misspoke when he said 8 instead of 9 justices.

HOWEVER, to not even know the name of one of the most recently appointed justices is simply unforgivable. This man has no business running for president.

I just hope everyone knows that he never tried to fix the border problem the entire time he has been governor here… I helped get Grey Davis ousted from CA for just messing up money and electricity, What Perry has done is worse. He has let up be invaded (yes really, invaded)

Our tax money now going to feed foreign nationals living on our soil, funded primarily by drugs and untaxed work, yet they take WIC and get LONE STAR cards to spend MY money on food, getting huge tax rebates from the federal govt, sending the remainder back to Mexico.

I have worked alongside Mexicans that are here for work illegally, many of them work VERY hard, but they should be working hard in THEIR country, fighting corruption, but instead they are here, not trying to find out what it means to be an American because they don’t care.

They see us as a bunch of wimps because we let them have it all. They are patriotic to Mexico. I don’t have a problem with that, but if their heart in in Mexico, why do you think they see us as anything but sugar-daddies?

They get everything handed to them on a silver platter and we are letting them get away with it. Yes, we the people. It starts with the people we elect to serve our great country. There is only a handful of them that work for us but they are calling the shots. They need to be voted out and we need to get some trustworthy people in office who understand the American people and what it is that we want. We have to follow the laws as citizens of this country, but yet illegals come here and nest and it is ok? Plus we are picking up the tab when we have thousands and thousands out of work. Not fair.

Even if someone didn’t know how many Justices there are, you should be able to figure out that it would have to be an odd number for them to be able to make decisions.
