Perry Repeats Opposition to US-Mexico Border Fence

Texas Gov. Rick Perry Repeats Opposition to US Mexico Border Fence New Hampshire Presidential Campaign

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — He may have been 2,000 miles from the border, but Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry’s immigration record in Texas quickly became the focus in New Hampshire Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to hundreds of Granite State voters at a private reception, the Texas governor was asked whether he supported a fence along the Mexican border.

“No, I don’t support a fence on the border,” he said, while referring to the long border in Texas alone. “The fact is, it’s 1,200 miles from Brownsville to El Paso. Two things: How long you think it would take to build that? And then if you build a 30-foot wall from El Paso to Brownsville, the 35-foot ladder business gets real good.”

Instead, Perry said he supported “strategic fencing” and National Guard troops to prevent illegal immigration and violence from Mexican drug cartels.

The answer produced an angry shout from at least one audience member. And it exposed an ongoing rift with some conservative voters over Perry’s immigration record.

Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities. And Texas tea party groups sent Perry an open letter this year expressing disappointment over his failure to get a bill passed that would have outlawed “sanctuary cities,” municipalities that protect illegal immigrants.

The Blaze previously reported Perry sent a letter to the federal government three days before he entered the presidential race, requesting Texas be compensated nearly $350 million for incarcerating illegal immigrants.

Perry has surged to the lead in national polls since joining the presidential race just three weeks ago. But New Hampshire Republicans are just getting to know him.

“I think there are a lot of questions out there still,” said tea party activist Jerry DeLemus, chairman of the Granite State Patriots Liberty PAC. “We don’t know him very well.”

Even in New Hampshire, he said illegal immigration is a key issue with his members and raised concerns about Perry’s immigration policies. DeLemus said a border fence should be part of any policy.

“Any deterrent is a good deterrent,” he said after Perry’s second private reception in Chichester.

Saturday’s visit marks the third time Perry visited the first-in-the-nation primary state since joining the race.

Despite having deep Southern roots and conservative social positions, the Texas native has indicated he will compete aggressively in New Hampshire, where both Republicans and independents vote in the primary election.

As a Tea Party member, I use a thing called critical thinking. Did Perry say he was against keeping illeglas out, NO. He said: “Perry said he supported “strategic fencing” and National Guard troops to prevent illegal immigration and violence from Mexican drug cartels.” That is NOT pro-illegals. Just like with home security if they want to get in they will. They have so many tunnels already in place a fence would be useless. I think armed military, and armed Immigration agents are more effective to meet our new guests. Guns are more effective than fences.

      Keep an open mind.

      God bless.

So that everyone gets this. California’s illegals were going back to Mexico in droves, because the economy is better in Mexico. Perry is creating jobs with prisons by using our tax dime to subsidize them. He also wants illegals to pay lower university tuition costs so that just means that our own citizen students will pay a little less for those illegals. Fences, we don’t need. Cutting entitlements, healthcare, and not letting their children obtain automatic citizenship would solve the problem.. You see..no money wasted on a ridiculous fence, and no more fraction of the trillions that our government is printing.

So to take this idea to another place; I should not bother to keep my basement drain clear and open since we will just get more rain anyway? What a putz! This seems to be a real thing with Texas politicians, GW was the same way about border security. I will say that if you use National Guard troops you better arm them and make the rules of engagement very loose, as in anyone crossing illigally is shot until dead and left to rot. A message to the Tea Party….I like your purpose and your determination. I love your strict adherence to the constitution. I love your fiscal beliefs and your beliefs about LIMITED GOVERNMENT. I live in TX and I know that stopping illegal immigration is crucial to the survival of America. It is crucial simply because with each new illegal America looses a small part of it’s own heritage. A new heritage starts to slowly cover and incorporate itself into society. This is why I stand firmly against ILLEGAL immigration and stand firmly for LEGAL immigration. But I digress. Many people desire a GOAL of stopping illegal immigration. Please do not be rigid in how it can be accomplished. If Perry can severly limit illegals entrance into America with “strategic fencing” and National Guard troops…what the heck do you care? Isn’t your goal to STOP or severely inhibit illegal immigration? I think we shoud ask Mr. Perry some questions about how he would plan to implement “strategic fencing” and the National Guard and then compare his ideas to a fence. Saying …”OHH because he doesn’t want a fence….I’m not going to vote for him” is foolish and unwise at this point in his campaign.

“But we should learn something else, that when you stand for the truth, when you don’t let anger force you into stupidity, eventually the ship will right itself. You just have to remain standing. The people attacking you with lies will be buried under their own weight. I

The RINO accusation is getting tired. What I believe you mean is that he is not conservative enough for your taste. You may have noticed that there are several Republicans who vote their “concience” and as a result look more like Democrats. That to me is a RINO. Rick Perry is far from being a RINO and he tells you what he believes. His point on the fence is well thought out by a border state veteran who has seen what works and what doesn’t. However, his stand on in-state tuition for illegals sucks..

You‘ve honestly got to question ANYBODY’S motives that well into adulthood, held the democratic ideology only to do a 180 when the right job presented itself. I don’t understand how somebody could do that for money, because I certainly never could; you can never really be comfortable (unless you‘re as crooked as a dog’s hind leg) with yourself. Yet, this is exactly what Perry did.

We all need to understand this because there is a better option out there for those with our ideologies.

I can”t stand the thought of passing over Ron Paul because of one issue, Iran. This man is the only candidate with a proven record extending more than a decade you twits. We are not going to get a “perfect” candidate people. Look at who covers the most issues we want solved and the answer will be Ron Paul by a landslide every time. Every time.

Look, Iran will be dealt with by Israel and the UN first. The nukes will fly from Israel as they will be attacked first by Iran, then the UN will step in. This notion that the US is the front runner in confronting Iran is silly. Besides, if we take military action against Iran, we might as well attack China, Russia, N. Korea, Cuba and a few others as well. They are all one in the same and will be our third world war in which everyone dies. The end of human existance.

We need to remove ourselves from that side of the globe and fortify our homeland, build our economy, and our military. Let Israel take care of Iran, then take it from there after the dust settles. Ron is our best chance regardless of his stance on Iran.

Think about it. He can win and he is our best candidate that will address more of our concerns than any other person running.

He was also still pushing the NAFTA Superhighway under the radar in opposition to the vast majority of Texans. Can I also point out that Perry sabotaged a Texas law in the Senate that would have held TSA accountable for their brutish and illegal treatment of the flying public. @Jaque: But would he do like the current administration and prevent other states from taking their own action with illegals? He want position himself so far on sanctuary cities. This is the number 2 issue for me. Jobs/immigration. They go hand in hand. If he’s strong on one and weak on the other, less jobs for true Americans. I’m holding out hope that maybe he would send the guard down in “large scale” force and start downsizing the threat of illegals and cartels. He needs to take action while he’s governor against sanctuary cities in Texas, if they do exist. Otherwise, I will throw my support for towards someone else in the primary. He’s like a conservative Democrat.

Firstly, Gore then was not the same Gore he is now.
      Secondly, people evolve, hopefully.
I was a lifelong Democrat, and in the 2008 primary I was a delegate for Hillary Clinton, then the current Fraud In Chief was gifted w/ the nomination and the scales fell from my eyes and I have become quite Conservative.
I wouldn’t support Hillary now if she ran against Obama.

Too many things about Perry/Romney make me uneasy.
Perry- in-state tuition for illegals and the fence ; Romney- Mass-care

Why do they not speak directly about the issues that illegals bring to our country?
Why do they not talk of the insane costs they bring to our schools, healthcare, and law-inforcement services?
Why do they not talk of the jobs they take from Americans…(I know, Americans won’t do those jobs).
If you are a candidate, I want to hear exactly what you think and WHY you think it. Do not beat around the bush!

like a limp sapling in the wind, it blows one way you do that thing, it blows another way, you do that other thing…I am disappointed in what Perry said, however, he‘s correct in saying a 30 foot fence won’t keep people out, a 35 foot ladder will do the trick, also shovels can dig a good hole.

There needs to be a better answer for border control. Such as automatic weapons, when an illegal comes across our borders they are shot. When they are found in the desert thirty and hungry because they were abandoned by their coyote leave them there to die.

Sounds pretty harsh but it would soon be a reality check for the illegals coming across the border knowing they are not welcome, and they would be killed if caught trying to cross the border.

Perry that’s a crock of krap, the seabees can build that fence in no time and under budget as long as the unions stay out of it. it’s a matter of national security so the seabess could do this job.

A fence is the right thing to do as far as the 35′ ladder comment yes someone could get a ladder that size to climb over, but that is where the national gaurd or the border patrol would come in and stop them.

That is why you do not hear Mitt promising he will bring in the fair tax because he knows that realistically this may not be something he can actually achieve. The reality is that those of us that believe in America first (our heritage, our Constitution), have to force candidates against the wall to answer how they will deal with illegal immigration. It is costing us trillions to educate and provide healthcare to these people.

Don’t tell me we should not have absolute border security. If you place your hand on the bible to take the oath of office, you are sworn to protect our borders. No further discussion necessary.

Remember….. many Mexicans believe that much of Texas, N Mexico, Az, Ca, Colo, and even Oregon should rightly be part of Mexico. Read Pat Buchanan‘s book to get the story if you don’t believe me. Patrick tried to tell us back in 1992, but we wouldn’t listen.
Do not vote for Perry or Romney. How did they just go to the top of the list?
Do you want your candidate to be picked for you?
It’s looking more like Palin with Bachmann, Rubio or Cain. I’m leaning towards Rubio or Cain due to female conflicts if Palin/Bachmann were elected. West is out due to not explaining his affiliation with the racist group the CBC. Sorry Allen, joining a race-based group is anathma to what the civil-rights movement was supposed to be about. Plus, Allen, you haven’t called out the CBC as racist. In fact, Allen, you joined them. Very curious. Bad choice.

      A 35′ ladders?

How does an intruder get down the other side? He can‘t pull up a 35’ ladder by himself. If he waits until there are about four people on the wall to hoist up the ladder, it would be noticed by the cameras that view the general vicinity, giving the Border Patrol lots of time to get there. Large groups of people wouldn’t have enough time to cross without being detected.

Too, if fences do not work, why has the one completed a short while ago in the San Diego area virtually stopped ALL crossings? And other places where there are fences as well?

This issue of amnest and immigration favored by Bush caused the Republicans to lose Congress in 2006 and that, along with the war in Iraq, almost destroyed the Republican party, thanks to the fat nitwit, Karl Rove.

“According to Wikipedia…In spring and summer 1953, the United States and Britain, through a covert operation of the CIA called Operation Ajax, conducted from the American Embassy in Tehran, helped organize a coup d’état to overthrow the Mossadeq government. The operation initially failed, and the Shah fled to Italy, but a second attempt succeeded, and Mosaddeq was imprisoned. According to a study of the coup headed by Mark J. Gasiorowski and Malcolm Byrne, intended “to resolve” the “controversy” over who and what were responsible, “it was geostrategic considerations, rather than a desire to destroy Mosaddeq’s movement, to establish a dictatorship in Iran or to gain control over Iran’s oil, that persuaded U.S. officials to undertake the coup.”

And Americans wonder why Iranians are hostile to the United States and its out-of-control government.”

Even though it would help, unless the commitment to effectively patrol such a fence would be made and implemented, a 35 foot ladder would be all that was necessary to make it ineffective.

Not even a 35 foot ladder. In existing fencing that’s already been put up thousands of breaches have been found, each one costing thousands of dollars to repair. It’s unknown how many have passed through breaches in fencing, but it’s certainly a lot. Studies have almost univerally shown fencing will not do much to address the problem. They will have an impact, but not enough to justify cost. They are only effective in very small corridors., like San Diego.

And really, I think many conservatives are blaming too many problems on illegals. As a capitalist pig, I don’t care if a business is able to hire lower wage workers that are illegal. That’s capitalism. Don’t want illegals to take American jobs? Ok, get rid of minimum wage! Let the market determine wages. And if after that Americans aren’t willing to work as cheaply as Mexicans, hey, that’s a social problem with lazy Americans, not Mexicans.

I agree illegals shouldn’t be provided services though. Turn them away at hospitals. Deny them access to our public schools. Actively deport the ones we do catch. Severely punish ones involved in crime. If you’re an illegal engaged in criminal behavior the punishment should automatically be much more severe than it would normally be for a US citizen.

Building a fence isn’t going to do jack but waste a bunch of money.

I walked foot patrol on the East/West German Border several times from 1988 to 1990. That fence extended across the country. At OP Alpha and OP India, we observed the border. The border was 3 fences deep, the 3rd was a click or two back. The border near those OP’s were mined, and protected by soldiers and trained German Shepards.

That border was more designed to keep their people in, than to keep us out.

Perry, who do you represent? Apparently NOT the numberless masses who are SICK of illegal immigration in this country.

Move fast and hard on this issue, otherwise just come clean and say you support human trafficking, drug trafficking, the closure of American hospitals due to unpaid bills, the ruination of American property, etc.

Oh, and an official apology to every LEGAL immigrant would also be a good step, along with a full refund of their processing fees.

Do NOT compromise on this issue, my fellow Americans.

It seems to me that “social issues” are better dealt with on the state level, making the President irrelevent in that regard. Romney may have made the mistake of “thinking out loud” over the course of his public life, but his stand on these issues appears more clear now. He was never a Democrat, never assisted Al Gore with anything, and as you stated, he would be good for the economy. Who is Perry and why do we care?

“At least he’s not obama”. For all you fools out there that repeat and believe that crap. You need to put the Kool Aid down, and have a friend or family member give you a swift kick in the butt. You need to open your eye’s. This man is “NO” conservative. He’s an opportunist, that will switch sides or try and take your land. There ‘s in semi decent article on WND.com that spells out some of perrys non-conservative ways. The only bad thing about the article, written by a perry supporter. Is, there was no mention of perry becoming a millionaire while holding office. Is there something wrong with millionaires? Hell no, 99.99% of the time the earned that money. Then there are those people who become millionaires in shady back room deals. Will a real Conservative please step forward? DeMint?

SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH Yep..that’s why I am not a Perry fan. He’s utilizing the illegals being here by housing them in prisons on our tax dime instead of deporting them. He wants to let them attend our Universities and charge them a lower rate which probably just means that our students will pay a little less for the illegal’s tuition. Califlornia I understand has gotten so bad economy wise that the illegals were going back home to Mexico in droves. That is all it would take…no fences, no prisons, just cut out the entitlement programs for them and not allow their children born on our soil automatic citizenship….all very simple really…but our government needs some reason to spend trillions and print all that money.

I kind of agree with him. A fence is a huge waste of money and time. We’ve all seen/heard about Juan and Juanita climbing these things, tunneling under ‘em. Because we have a drug war at our borders, murders, kidnappings… the National Guard, or even the Reserves (because it is a Federal issue) should be manning that border from end to end. The Mexican Military has crossed our borders, so we should definately make this a Military matter and live rounds should be issued.

As far as his leniency regarding other issues connected to the illegals problem… I’m not on board.

AMEN! Does Perry think we‘re fools and expect us to believe that it’s too hard/too expensive to build a fence? That’s the LEAST he could do to defend the Texas border but he dismisses it without a thought. He knows good and well a fence could be built and in no-time flat. It wouldn’t be near as expensive or as difficult as constructing an interstate highway!

Look, folks – we all know why he dismisses border control issues just like every other candidate. Illegals are at least 30,000,000+ in this country and it’s a massive voting block. Perry, like all the others, is afraid of offending the 30M + all their families and friends because he wants the Mexican vote. He’s willing to overlook all the illegals just like every other politician has done for DECADES. This is why our country is in the shape it’s in – because of self-serving POLITICIANS. Perry is exactly that.

Don’t want to throw water on Rick Perry (as I love Texas) but I’ve had an uneasy feeling about him from the start, knowing: He was for sanctuary cities, wanted to give in-state tuition to illegals, attended the Bidlerberg conference (New world order) and all this is a worry to me. He seemed to be in favor of the Trans Tex Corridor, opening the borders between Canada & Mexico and the USA . I’ll hold on until he explains what all this really means before I make any decision. Quite frankly, I’m so tired of the lies we get from everyone, all the time. Whom can you believe anymore? Obama has been nothing but one lie after another and his people love it. Why?

Yes Rino. You’re looking at Arlen Spector of the west. Ran Al Gore’s campaign….supported Hillarycare. Refuses to secure the border. Texas’ economy is better than the rest of the country, mostly due to 2 things; low taxes and oil. Perry didn’t create either of those two things. Yes, he’s not Obama, but he’s not as conservative as the media would have you believe. The lamestream is perfectly happy with Huntsman, Romney or Perry. None as bad as Obama, but all just really liberal-lite. Each taking us down the path of destruction, just at a slightly slower pace.
