Perry to Jay Leno on Voting-Age Gaffe: ‘I Was Thinking Drinking Age, Maybe’

Last night, Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry appeared on “The Tonight Show,” where he addressed recent campaign gaffes.
Perry, who has come under fire for a series of recent flubs, cracked jokes, bantered with host Jay Leno and made light of some of his most embarrassing media moments.
“Thanks for coming. You provided us with a lot of material, so thanks for being here,” Leno quipped. “Well, that’s what I do,” Perry responded. “Well, you’re a good sport to come, because we’ve been nailing you,” Leno continued.
There was a light-hearted tone as the two went back and worth. Perry, clearing willing to make fun of himself, engaged in joke-making and a healthy dose of self-deprecation. In addressing his forgetfulness during debates, he said, ”Every now and then I call my dogs by the wrong name,” eliciting laughter from the audience.
Most notably, Perry addressed his most-recent New Hampshire voting-age gaffe. “Those of you that will be 21 by Nov. 12th, I ask for your support and your vote,” he told a college audience earlier this week. Since the voting age is 18 and no one is exactly sure what’s happening on the November 12th date he references, Perry caught a fair bit of heat.
“You and I — we grew up in that 21 voting age. I was thinking drinking age, maybe,” Perry quipped. “You’ve got to have an excuse, right, so that‘s mine and I’m sticking to it,” he continued. As far as November 12th goes, Perry seemed to indicate that it was 2012 he was referring to, not the specific day as it seemed in his speech.
Leno, of course, also asked Perry what he thinks about Herman Cain’s recent troubles. “Yours are gaffes, those are ‘oh my gods,’” Leno joked. Here what Perry had to say about his fellow candidate and watch the hilarious dialogue, below:

Please give me a break Perry pauses for a word and he has dementia. Maybe you need your mental health checked. To dismiss a serious candidate for a momentary slip is just stupid!

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 6:13pm@1froglegs great research leads to great points, and you’ve made a few good ones here. Which goes back to one of mine, now in the spotlight Newt is going to have to atone for a number of decisions he’s made in his personal and professional life. The argument being that in the 2012 election the GOP is going to have to paint, as Reagan said, “in bold colors” the differences between its nominee and the current President. With the points you’ve made, along with his consultant work with Fannie Mae among others, it won’t be long before the voters, at one time beguiled by his statesman like debating skills, start asking uncomfortable questions. Rick Perry firmly supports the 10th Amendment, put forth a solid economic plan based on personal responsibility and limited government, has a flawless record on supporting gun ownership rights, and understands the true threats to our nation and Constitution. I’d rather have a President who forgets his talking points (and yes ALL candidates memorize them ad nausium before the debates) than one who forgets about America’s core values. Without a teleprompter our current President can’t seem to remember either.

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 10:57amLast night (and in the last two debates) Perry reminded folks in the Tea Party and throughout the GOP why they begged him to run in the first place. Because the GOP actually vets its candidates and its primary voters generally don’t gravitate towards one candidate with cultist fervor, the front-runner in this race has varied from month to month. However I think the Ron Paul commercial bashing Gingrich is just the tip of his 30 year old record iceberg. The added scrutiny due to his current front runner status at this point in the game will ultimately hurt Gingrich, and if Perry keeps staying on message with ideas that resonate with the American people like he did last night he will emerge as the predominate “anti-Romney” candidate in this race. Keep it up Governor Perry and we just may get our country back on track!

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 11:10amThe worst part about Newt is that he is to the left of Romney on all the policies that people oppose Romney for. Romney-State health insurance mandate vs Newt-National insurance mandate support earlier this year on Meet the Press. Romney- global warming believer vs Newt- global warming believer who wants cap and trade. Clearly Perry is the best choice, as long as people vote on policy and experience.

And frankly, it’s something I would strongly support.” — Gingrich, February 2, 2007

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 2:09pmNewt once again–
Some aspect of the working poor has to involve transfer of finances. To ask people in the lowest paying jobs to bear the full burden of their health insurance is just irrational, it’s not going to happen…One of my conclusions in the last six years, funding the Center for Health Transformation, and looking at what our system is, unless you have 100 percent coverage, you can’t have the right preventive care and you can’t have a rational system. [...]
If I see someone who’s earning over $50,000 a year, who has made the calculated decision not to buy health insurance. I’m looking at someone who’s absolutely as irresponsible as anybody who is ever on welfare….I’m actually in favor of saying, whatever the appropriate income is, you ought to either have health insurance, or you ought to post a bond. But we have no room in this society to have a free rider approach if you’re well off economically to say we’ll cheat our neighbors.

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 9:47amRick Perry or any of the Republican candidates can and will defeat BHO. Obama is a total failure as President, if the media used the same standards when it comes to BHO as they use against Republicans in general, he would be exposed as a liar, inarticulate, gaffe prone buffoon, instead they prop him up and make excuses, it’s really a disgusting double standard. Posted on December 2, 2011 at 8:47amRick Perry is the only Republican candidate with a chance at beating Obama. This is going to be the dirtest campaign ever waged, Obama is desperate, and he has many menions to do his dirty work. Obama’s hands will be clean, that is how he has operated from day one. Here is my view of how each will look after the attack. Memes do stick. Romney-Mormon freak. Gingrich-Arrogant, old, unfaithful, Pelosi lover, Paul Ryan hater, flip floper, etc. etc. Cain-too much swirling around in that head, and in a whisper Cancer. What can Obama say about Perry? Idiot clinging to his gun and Bible? Racist! We can’t find the N-Rock, but we are sure he painted it as a child, and all those many Black friends and supporters are Uncle Toms? Wants to secure the border and support Hispanics with the Dream Act? Gaffes? I can‘t wait to see Perry’s ad of all Obama’s gaffes, each one cutting to Perry saying Oops! Uh, I think I’ve been to…57 states. Oops! Navy Corpse man…Oops! The English embassy…Oops! It has to be Perry. How about Perry/Rubio!

Lets look at the records and compare what they say with what they did. Simple enough! Come on MSM, do your job instead of laughing at these candidates. if anyone deserves to be laughed at its Obama and the MSM. Only thing needed for a Republican candidate to do is put an ad out there with Obama saying one thing and doing the opposite along with all “his” slips!!!

Posted on December 2, 2011 at 8:23amI’m so tired of the focus on gaffes and alleged affairs. I don’t want a liar, cheat or phony as our republican presidential candidate, but I think these candidates ought to refuse to answer these types of questions and start using appearances on mainstream TV as opportunities to remind the public that the president of this country is destroying everything that we have held dear, that he associates with subversive individuals (Ayers, Wright, Muslim Brotherhood writing his speeches), and that he is intentionally creating a divide between citizens by playing on fear and anger. When are these candidates going to really turn up the heat? This is one reason we the people are frustrated.
