PETA: Hey, Let’s Change Bible to Include More Animal Friendly Language!

If this proposal goes anywhere, it would be the second PC-inspired assault on the Good Book in less than a month–the first one being that the New International Version of the Bible will now use “gender neutral” language.

Gothamist reports:

After they heard that the latest translation of the New International Version of the Bible will now use gender-inclusive language such as “he or she” instead of just “he”, PETA saw an opportunity to change one other thing. The organization has petitioned the Committee on Bible Translation to suggest that its next translation remove “speciesist” language, by referring to animals as “he or she” instead of “it.”

CNN spoke to PETA rep Bruce Friedrich who said,  “When the Bible moves toward inclusively in one area … it wasn’t much of a stretch to suggest they move toward inclusively in this area.”

Friedrich, a practicing Roman Catholic, said, “Language matters. Calling an animal ‘it’ denies them something. They are beloved by God. They glorify God.”

“God’s covenant is with humans and animals. God cares about animals,” Friedrich said. “I would think that’s a rather unanimous opinion among biblical scholars today, where that might not have been the case 200 years ago.”

Friedrich, who is also a vegan and suggests the Bible promotes vegetarianism, puts a religious face on PETA’s ethical arguments.

“What happens in slaughterhouses mocks God,” he said. People know intuitively that “animals are ‘who’ not ‘what.’ … Acknowledging it would better align our practices with our beliefs.”

David Berger, the dean of Yeshiva University’s Bernard Revel graduate school of Jewish studies, said making the shift in English PETA is requesting would be difficult given the nature of ancient Hebrew.

“In Hebrew all nouns are gender-specific. So the noun for chair is masculine and the noun for earth is feminine. There’s simply no such thing as a neutral noun,” Berger told CNN. “It’s unusual to have a noun that would indicate the sex of the animal.”

Over at the website Weasel Zippers, we are confronted with a very pointed question: “How many overwhelmingly leftist PETA members actually read the Bible?”

Because i don’t believe that you… trying to interpret anything from the Word/Bible
in you own thinking avails very much…TRUTH!
You cannot get understanding of the Bible through mental assent!
Through the hEARt man believes to right standing because
God put an ear in your hEARt to hear the Word (close up and personal)
because of love…the Word came out of love to the World!
HE is smarter than us and
    it was for His purposes
that He did it that way….
and if you think about it
it is pretty awesome! the way He did it….
    end of story!

the event you mentioned :) Have a good laugh

“They peed on me!!!” charged one activist. “They grabbed me, said I looked like I was French, started calling me ‘La Trene’, and duct taped me to a tree so they could pee on me all day!”
“I…I was trying to show my outrage at a man with a heavy leather jacket, and he…he didn’t even care. I called him a murderer, and all he said was, ‘You can’t prove that.’ Next thing I know he forced me to ride on the back of his motorcycle all day, and would not let me off, because his girl friend was out of town and I was almost a woman.”
Still others claimed they were forced to eat hamburgers and hot dogs under duress. Those who resisted were allegedly held down while several bikers “farted on their heads.”

Whoever it was that said, “ I was almost a woman”, is probably closer to being a woman than a man! A man would have, at least, put up some kind of fight; even though he might get his butt kicked! I don’t believe there are any Men in PETA. I’m pretty sure any males involved with it must relinquish their sack upon entry. In fact, they’re probably required to eat it to prove their distaste for masculinity and humanity.
      Same with the Libs.
      Leave my Bible alone.

You used to respect PETA? Do a little digging and you will find that at their most radical they advocate for no pet ownership, abolishment of meat as a food staple, elimination of hunting or animal control of any type, and onward…. They have never been balanced regarding good stewardship. They would have to destroy the Word of God in order for their advocacies to be realized.

      QUIETTEXAN,
Yes it does. I do not know what to think about this latest PETA debacle.
I know that animals have emotions. I know they feel pain. I know they sense their demise whether it be at the farm or the slaughterhouse.
I think that we SHOULD find ways to painlessly kill. I think that we should not eat veal, or any other animal that has not experienced life before we slaughter it.
Vast humane improvements need to be made in the way we treat our “FOOD” animals. They do deserve a semblance of life before slaughter.
      Work on that.
We do not need to change the Bible.

      P.E.T.A. Vs a biker club

From where exactly do the PETA folks think God got those animal skins to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness? Hint — first blood sacrifice required for the remission/covering of sin. Don’t get me started on the lambs, rams, goats, sheep, pigeons, etc. sacrificed at the temple (and let’s not forget that some of the meat was given to the priests to eat).

So how does one make that PETA friendly without totally changing its meaning??

Tibetans, the 2010 niv is NOT gender neutral, because the original Greek ( Arimaic ) Is gender specific but often uses the same word to describe man, men, people, they, them, and female. Only the preceding words in context can be used to determine the precise meaning of the “ gender or exclusivity” of the authors intent.
As for PETA, IT should read a bible, preferably the King James and discover that animals are for People use and stewardship, not vice versa.

I wouldn’t trust the NIV no matter what they did. I don’t trust in now, didn’t trust it in the past, and just won’t trust it in the future.

I use the NKJV and found it to be a good translation. not completely perfect but very close, I look up in strongs concordance anything I have a question about. The world will adjust God‘s word to suit thier purposes when they do it is no longer God’s word but the worlds. It is a shame and is a sign of the times. The days were shorten so that the children of God would not be decieved. That is what Jesus himself said and now I can see why the Father has done that. Because man now is rewriting the Word of God to decieve future generations. God won’t let that happen, The truth is the truth no matter if we agree with it or not, understand it or not, and it won’t change even if we rewrite it.

They have already made a false concept of a good pride. Pride is never good in the bible, yet about 20 years ago I threw a NIV in the trash because it made pride a good thing.

By what right does this Committee on Bible Translation make changes to the Bible anyway? They are the ones who should be challenged. Christians should refuse to use any Bible that has been updated by these PC freaks. There was nothing wrong with the Bibles of our ancestors. I doubt that there was intentional gender bias back then. Using a male pronoun was intended for use as a pronoun in general. Evidently there are some progressives out there who are very insecure about their own gender.

@sissykatz – Be careful when you help the humane societies, you donation is likely going through to PETA. I know the US Humane Society and many of the local ASPCA and USHS chapters donate to other animal groups, including PETA. Ask them or check thier web site. Sometimes it tough to find out, they don’t always admit to it. You can play sly and act like a PETA person and maybe they will open up to you. I just donate to my County Government Animal Control now; they need help too (tax money is tight, as it should be) and I know the money stays in the county. {:-)

Ah just another Roman Catholic watering down of God’s Word. It started in the 1611 edition and has continued since then.

When you understand that todays version of the Bible is what the Catholic Church approved of you have issues with those books in the New Testament that make up the New Testament. And it should be noted that there are many books that were left out because those at the time of Cannonation of the current list of books had a different and maybe biased opinion.

The Book of Revelation is the most controversial book in that list. Now one knows for a true fact who the author really is and the content is the content of one mans dreams or visions while imprisoned off the coast of Turkey.

I recall a moment in time when the Roman Catholic Church tried to make the Nicene Creed “Gender neutral” and take out the word “man.” It really didn’t fly b/c no one remembered to take it out when reciting it. Makes me think that not many were really “offended” by it.

I just take it in context. That’s the way people spoke in that time. It was male in nature. I’m not offended by it.

As far as animals go, I think it’s pretty clear in the Bible of their order in things. They are here for man and not the other way around! I’m also not certain that being vegetarian is in the Bible. I’m no biblical scholar, but I think I do recall lambs being slaughtered for feasts. Unless the left is changing the classification of lambs and they are now considered plants.
