"Tofurkey, Texas"? PETA has asked the town of Turkey, Texas to rename themselves to the vegan alternative in honor of Thanksgiving. (Image source: Flickr user Meowster)
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has approached the residents of Turkey, Texas with a request: rename your town “Tofurkey” in honor of Thanksgiving.
Even if the name change to the mock meat vegan alternative is just for one day, PETA said it will draw attention to the treatment that turkeys in the U.S. suffer virtually every day of their lives.
In return, PETA said it will treat the entire town — population 421, according to the U.S. Census Bureau — to a “delicious, healthy vegan holiday feast.”
“Changing the town’s name to Tofurky will remind people around the country that we each can have a delicious, protein-packed, and satisfying Thanksgiving meal without supporting animal abuse,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a letter Monday to the town’s mayor.
But local ABC affiliate KVII-TV spoke to a few locals who bristled at the idea of renaming their town.
“What do I think of changing the name of Turkey to tofu? I think it‘s about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard,” Tommy Sims said.
“We are insulted,” resident Carol Redd added. “We like Turkey. We are proud to be Turkey.”
City officials reportedly have no plans to change the town’s name.
_____
From KVII, here is the full letter sent to Mayor Pat Carson of Turkey:
Dear Mayor Carson,
I am writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our more than 3 million members and supporters, including thousands in Texas, with an idea that will boost Turkey into the spotlight and promote compassion: Rename your town “Tofurky” for Thanksgiving. If you agree to adopt this moniker for just one day, we’d be happy to provide a delicious, healthy vegan holiday feast for all the town’s residents.
Tofurky is a savory, flavorful, “meaty” vegan entrée with wild-rice and bread-crumb stuffing that is 100 percent cruelty-free. In contrast, virtually all turkey meat sold in the U.S. comes from factory farms, where birds are confined by the thousands to filthy, barren sheds. They are drugged and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. These bright and social animals are denied everything that is natural and important to them, and at the slaughterhouse, turkeys are still conscious when their throats are slit. Changing the town’s name to Tofurky will remind people around the country that we each can have a delicious, protein-packed, and satisfying Thanksgiving meal without supporting animal abuse.
PETA’s feast would feature Tofurky with mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes (made with vegan margarine), and vegan apple pie topped with vanilla dairy-free ice cream. Introducing vegan cuisine to your residents would help improve their health: A vegan diet is free of the saturated animal fats and cholesterol found in meat and dairy products, and according to the American Dietetic Association, a vegan diet reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.
Thanksgiving is the perfect time to rename your town and give turkeys, as well as your town’s citizens, something to gobble about! Please let me know of your decision.
Sincerely yours,
Tracy Reiman
Executive Vice President

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 2:14pmAs an activist Vegan, PETA disgusts me. They prefer stirring trouble where it’s undue and unnecessary. Who cares what its name is? They are also hypocrites. Almost all of the domestic pets who are turned into them as homeless animals are euthanized. There’s no excuse for that. They say stupid things like that fish are sea kittens, and they protest vermin extermination. Fish are NOT sea kittens. They’re FISH. And as a vegan I feel they don’t have to be cute to deserve rights against being treated as property. You want to see a group that actually cares about animals and not publicity, and gets things done? Look at the Animal Liberation Front. I love them. They are heroes.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 3:41pmMy personal experience with “activist vegans” is that they elevate animals above humans. I say this because, while they would carefully tiptoe around a bug on the sidewalk, they will say the most vile and insulting things to people who disagree with them on what to eat. Here’s an actual quote (a mild one when compared to other things this person has said): “People who hunt should have their throats cut.”
alf (I intentionally don’t capitalize it) seeks to violently impose it’s ideology on everyone else.

Posted on November 18, 2011 at 5:35amUntil recently, I was also a Vegan… and like most Vegans relied heavily on Tofu/Soy… thenl I discovered soy beans contain estrogen. Excessive estrogen feminizes males and causes additional health problems for all consumers. Soy is confirmed as the root cause of especially small genitalia in generations of Japanese male babies. Even if a diet does not include Tofu and soy milk, soy is increasingly difficult to avoid… because our food supply is now saturated with soy. Is it just a coincidence that soy is so opportunely instrumental for a sterilization/ depopulation scheme? No need to read the labels on trusted products? Wesson’s Vegetable Oil is now 100% soy oil… Best Foods Mayonnaise in now made with soy oil… most salad dresssings and sauces now contain soy oil… butter-like spreads such as I Cant Believe it’s not Butter, Country Crock, cooking oil sprays such as Pam, are now made with soy… most breads, crackers and chips are now made with soy oil… Bisquick pancake mix now contains soy… most organic packaged foods also contain soy. Read your labels and avoid soy unless you are content to be a feminized male and sterilized (both genders). In addition to male-feminization and sterilization, other consequences of excessive estrogen include; weight gain, headaches, infections, fatigue, fibroids, Osteoporosis, irregular periods, cramps, hot flashes, depression, panic attacks, mood swings and memory loss.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 1:53pmBlow ‘em out the airlock. What a bunch of condescending idiots. These PETA turkeys are lucky their organization brings in enough money to employ them because they’re too dumb to earn a living doing anything else.
BTW PETA are notorious for animal abuse. Nothing noble about killing a van full of stray cats and dogs with a hammer and illegally disposing of the corpses in a grocery store dumpster. Look it up.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 2:10pmI agree with PETA(can’t believe I said that) that turkeys and chickens are treated horrifically by the plants. Don’t believe it? Visit Tyson, Pilgrim’s Pride, or any other major poultry plant. But instead of using their members to do something real, the idiots chase whatever they can to get on the news for being morons.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 11:05pmAs I was reading that ridiculous letter, I got to that part and thought, “Yeah, I agree with that.” But my answer isn’t to never eat any animal meat or byproduct ever again. I try to buy from local farmers who sell grass fed beef with no antibiotics or growth hormones. Same with chickens; free range and no drugs. We are also avid hunters who stock our freezer full of deer meat every fall, and we’re hoping to harvest a turkey for Thanksgiving. Some of my friends and family think I’m going “hippie” all of a sudden, but just because I agree with some of the things liberals agree with, doesn’t mean I agree with their politics. PETA is stupid!
Have you seen the conditions that chickens are kept in at places like the Tyson contracted farms? They are given hormones to fatten them up so fast that they can’t even walk a few steps without collapsing. It’s because they are growing at twice the rate in half the time a normal chicken would. They have so much weight on them from growing so large that their organs can‘t function and their legs can’t hold the weight. They have lots of chickens just keel over and die. Ethically, that’s no way to treat an animal. Even hunters believe that you should respect these animals. And what‘s just as bad is that we actually think it’s okay to eat these sick creatures! What do you think that’s doing to our bodies?! I think God gave us exactly what we need to survive, and there’s no point screwing that up with all the crap we
