Philippine Actor Mistaken for Real Gunman Shot Dead

(AP) — Police say a Filipino actor playing a masked gunman has been shot dead by a village watchman in the central Philippines who allegedly mistook him for a real assassin.

Cebu city community police chief Alexis Relado says that watchman Eddie Cuizon tried to accost Kirk Abella, who was wearing a ski mask and carrying a toy gun, and shot him late Saturday just as the actor was directed to speed away on a motorcycle.

Relado says the 32-year-old actor was working on “Going Somewhere,” being filmed by British director Alan Lyddiard in Cebu.

Cuizon claims he was only responding to the reported presence of armed men.

Relado said Monday that Cuizon faces homicide charges and violation of a gun ban.

This is why in civilized societies you have to get a permit before shooting a film. Law enforcement officials are informed before any appearance of firearms, simulated shooting or explosions. They cordon off the area and are ready to dispel the fears of onlooking public that it’s real. The real tragedy here is that the watchman is being prosecuted for the idiotic failings of the morons making the movie.

My wife is a film student and I help out with “heavy lifting” on their set equipment all the time. Even if you didn’t see the camera, you would think the 50 other people with the heavy machinery, lights, and megaphones yelling would tip you off.

Not to mention… why was the watchman carrying a gun in the first place?

When the film crew is shooting in a public place. Its difficult to control everything. Similar thing happened recently in New York where they are filming the 3rd sequel for Transformers. As the yellow Camaro known as “bumble bee” was speeding in an intersection it slamed T-bone on a police cruiser responding to another call.

But this thing that happened in the Philippines is very unfortunate indeed as someone got killed.

This is just an extreme case of ” Too soon, man. Too soon. “

I have lived in the Philippines for over 6 years, and I just can’t believe the watchman did not know they were filming.
The word spreads so fast there, and they did not have cell phones when I was there, and Home Phone were nearly non existant, but word spreads fast there!
Now they have cell phones, and like stated with a film crew, it should have been apparent that there was a movie in production, not a real gunman.

Sad, for both families, and My prayers go out to all of them!

It sounds to me like a Barney Fithe movie to me. I hate to say it but I can‘t believe the watchman didn’t know they were filming. I feel bad for both of them because as stated earlier one life ended and another destroyed.

Sounds like lack of communication. Very sad for both parties involved.

Yes, both of their families are now shattered forever, just as is the watchmans life. One life has come to an ending, and another is destroyed.

May God watch over them, and their families, friends, and those of the area that seen this happen.
