Philly Returns ‘Christmas’ to ‘Holiday Village’ Sign

Consider it a Christmas re-birth.

Philadelphia’s mayor has acquiesced and returned “Christmas” to a “holiday” sign marking the city’s famous Christmas village market. The sign, which originally said “Christmas Village,” was altered to say “Holiday Village” earlier this week in order to be politically correct. But not everyone‘s buying the mayor’s explanation.

Wednesday, Mayor Michael Nutter announced the sign would be changed back. Philly Clout reports:

Mayor Nutter, after sustaining two days of controversy, wants “Christmas” back up on the signs at the entrance to the German Christmas Village at City Hall.  Nutter told PhillyClout he spoke with the village organizer and the sign should be back up by tomorrow.

Nutter said the decision came after “personal reflection” on the matter.

“We are an international, multi-ethnic, multi-faith city,” Nutter said. “I took some time to step back from all of this to think about it in a larger context.”

Nutter said he had nothing to do with the original decision, and stopped short of saying the sign changes national attention factored into Wednesday’s decision.

German American Marketing, Inc. issued a statement Tuesday saying that the original change was made in “response to what the Managing Director of the City of Philadelphia asked for.”

Richard Negrin, the city’s managing director, said that he never specifically asked for the word to be removed, but talked with Bauer about the complaints, Philly Clout reports.

But not everyone is buying Nutter’s explanation:

From MyFoxPhilly.com, quoting columnist Buzz Bissinger:

It was a public relations disaster and the mayor is not telling the truth, that it was the guy in Germany who owned the village that made the decision. It’s not true. The city went to him, the city said, ‘you got to take down Christmas, two people are complaining.’ The city overreacts, as usual, and now they change it back because the city looked like an idiot.

Only after these Liberal idiots get a gazillion telephone calls and a million emails do they reconsider their lunacy in taking the word “Christmas” out of the CHRISTMAS season. Morons! Even in liberal, socialist England, they use the words MERRY CHRISTMAS! What the hell is wrong with this nation?

Take political correctness and stick it where the sun does not shine. It is a “CHRISTMAS” Village. If they want, non Christians can set up their own shopping villages, as well. Even though it is celebrated at the wrong time of the year, CHRISTMAS is CHRISTMAS. Not, “Holiday”. For those who do not like it, tough toe nails. Go complain to Jesus. He gave of Himself so that you might live. So now as a reward, you want to obliterate Him?

    Mayor Nutter? What a name!

Perhaps he should worry more about changing his own name instead of trying to “exclude” Christmas in order to be “all-inclusive”!

DROP THE PC-CRAP NUTTER!!! AMERICA IS GETTING SICK OF IT!!! GET WITH THE PROGRAM — WE ARE GOING THE OTHER WAY AND SLOWLY REMOVING THE PC GARBAGE FROM THE SYSTEM!!!

Having lived in Germany I appreciate their love of Christmas, Christmas markets and Advent. No Holiday used here and no glaring signs of discounts for deals. Just a love and respect for the holiday. The US has lost so much with its secularization and PC agendas. PS. Went to mass last weekend in a cathedral and it was standing room only!!!

Now I have one reason less to be embarrassed to tell people where I live. In case some don’t know it, those who objected to “Christmas” were asked if they wanted to work on that day, according to Phila. Daily Newspaper. They declined to work.

My Thanks to Mayor Nutter for changing the sign back to Christmas. He must be up for re-election or he got overwhelmed by negative phone calls and emails. Whatever made him change his mind I am extremely thankful. There are too many people and companies worried about the almighty dollar and that is why they are wanting to leave Christ out of Christmas. I decided a long time ago to not spend my money in any store that does not wish me a MERRY CHRISTMAS. To all of you who read the Blaze, I wish you a Very Merry CHRISTmas and a Happy New Year.

It’s about time someone is standing up for the word “CHRISTmas”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so tired of being politically correct. Christians celebrate Christmas. There is nothing wrong with wanting to display the word CHRISTmas when our country was founded on Judeo-Christian Values.

    Merry Christmas everyone!!!!
    Happy Hanukkah too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s always been Christmas. I’ve started taking notice and refuse to shop where they use the generic term, “Happy Holidays” and go only to the stores with enough courage to say “Merry Christmas” and
the same with cards. I feel offended by people & businesses who tell me happy holiday instead of what the season is really about. Jesus is the reason for the season!

      @The blazers

Just got the Christmas gift of a lifetime; have seen a family of kestrels here near my apartments for some time dining on the flocks of pigeons (winged rats to me) that people keep feeding for some odd reason. When coming back from the store, one of them, about a year old from the size of it, was perched on a tree branch, and stayed there while I just admired it from about 8 ft away; no I am not crazy enough to try and touch it, value my hands and eyes too much for that.

I love the kestrels, my gramps was a trained falconer as well; he helped me learn some of the skills as well.

Thank you Lord for the great gift of this season.

I couldn’t agree more with you. It seems that everyone elses holiday has to be showcased but when it comes right down to Christianity or or the birth of Jesus that’s a different story. Please don’t ever buy into the politically correct agenda. They echo tolerance at the expense of those they don’t agree with. If they are going to be tolerant (and not be a hypocrite) then they really must tolerate…even Christians.

I don’t believe it has anything to do with being PC. That’s just what they are using to completely eliminate Christianity. And the ignorant that believe that its “Freedom FROM religion” Too ignorant to look it up, its “Freedom OF religion” They know exactly what they are doing.

This does make the city look like an idiot. I am tired of two or three people complaining and the inevitable over reaction by the PC patrol.

If you are offended by Christmas then you should stock up on what you will need until the new year and lock yourself in the basement. I don’t even want to know anyone who is offended by Christmas.

      Merry Christmas to you all.

I don’t just not shop at the stores that have substituted Holiday for Christmas,,, I take it one step further and ensure the Manager knows my feelings. Fill a cart and then refuse to buy in front of the Manager and walk out making sure the manager knows it is only because of the lack of support for Christmas.
