Photo: Minn. Man Accidentally Kills 40,000-Sq-Ft Lawn Right Before He Was Set to Host Cystic Fibrosis Event

A bottle of almost anything these days will recommend customers read the label and directions carefully before using any of the product. Rob Olson of Lake Elmo, Minn., would have been wise to do so more carefully.
Olson was slated to host a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis in his expansive, 40,000-square-foot backyard, but thanks to advice from a local garden center and tiny print on a bottle of weed killer, the fundraiser has been canceled. According to KARE 11, Olson’s bottle of Ferti-lome did more than its job on his yard. It killed everything.

Rob Olson stands in his yard. (Image: KARE screenshot)

You can easily spot the patches that were missed by the weed and grass killer. (Image: KARE screenshot)
It turns out, there is one mention on the bottle that the product is actually a weed and grass killer. Olson’s entire yard was accidentally destroyed.
Here‘s more from KARE on Olson’s thoughts and what he is doing now about the situation:
Olson believes the mistake is less the fault of the garden center than the labels used by Ferti-lome.
In an email, Geneva Aragon, a Ferti-lome spokesperson, pointed out instructions “related directly to the product” are contained in a booklet fixed to the back of the bottle.
On the second page of the eight-page booklet, customers are warned to not use the spray on desirable plants or lawns. There is one additional reference to “Weed & Grass Control” on the front of the bottle.
Olson believes the warning should have been clearer and more prominent. “I think the packaging should say right on it, this will kill your lawn.”

"Grass" is mentioned as one of the plants killed by the product. (Image: KARE screenshot)
Watch the report where the reporter makes note that “the only green areas are those he missed” applying the product:
As for the canceled fundraiser, Olson, whose two sons have cystic fibrosis, was disappointed not to fund another venue for the event in time. He told KARE that last year the fundraiser he held raised $20,000.

The corn across the street from me is not as high as my tomato plants. This is NOT good. My lawn reminds me of amber waves of grain :/

Posted on July 16, 2012 at 4:48pmI spent over twenty years spraying lawns and this kind of thing gave me a lot of business. A licenced applicator is well trained and regulated beyond reason but any idiot can go down to any garden center and buy these chemicals. In fact some are available to homeowners that are not available to licenced applicators. If the product contained GLYPHOSPHATE (ROUND-UP) I hope he sues Monsanto because they have run the worst ad possible on TV for years and gotten away with it. We’ve all seen the ad where the guy standing in his lawn uses the spray bottle to kill one dandelion 15 to 20 feet away. I guarantee anyone doing this will have a streak all the way from the spray bottle to the dandelion that looks like the picture above.
Report Post »A man playing golf in Florida had a heart attack and died. The golf course had been sprayed with diazinon so the family sued. Nobody knows what the settlement was but Diazinon is no longer labeled for use on a golf course. You can still use in your yard and on your GARDEN though.
Our state was one where ground water was tested for pesticides. The results showed home owners are the big poluters because the main contaminants found were ones that farmers and professional applicators wouldn’t use.
I find it hard to find sympathy for this guy if he did not read and understand the label. I believe every pesticide label in effect says do not use until you READ and UNDERSTAND the label. It’s idiots like him that make it tough on the real professionals

Posted on July 16, 2012 at 4:52pmYou don’t need “green grass” to bring in “green cash” for a Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser.

One more thing. Here in Florida, during our no-rain periods, real estate agents hire people to paint lawns green so the houses will be more appealing to clients.

So I‘m not sure we’ve seen anyone dieing on the golf course lately.

A professional lawn company could have treated his lawn for a modest amount. Judging from the house, he could probably afford it, and it would have been far cheaper than buying a whole new lawn.
