Master Cpl. Byron Greff
Life is short. This is a lesson many of us often hear, but so few retain. It‘s easy to get caught up in life’s chaos and messiness, but Master Cpl. Byron Greff‘s story is a reminder that it’s important to cherish the people in our lives who matter most.
Just days before the Canadian soldier was set to deploy to Afghanistan, photographer Erik Hornung took his intern, Laura, to Greff’s home to take some pictures of his newborn baby. While the experience seemed like a standard, run-of-the-mill photography shoot, little did Hornung know that he would be taking the last professional picture of the father with his baby girl.
Tragically, Greff was among 17 people who perished in an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, over the weekend. Following the incident, during which a suicide bomber slammed a van containing explosives into a NATO bus, the Taliban claimed responsibility.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has since offered praise to Greff for boldly serving his nation. ”Master Cpl. Greff paid the ultimate price serving his country. His life and death serves as an example of the bravery and outstanding dedication of Canadian Armed Forces members on this mission,” Harper said in a statement.
It was just days before this horrific development that Greff was at home, relaxing in Canada and preparing to deploy. While Hornung originally had no plans to photograph the soldier, something compelled him to do so anyway. He describes what led him to take a family photo of Greff, his wife Lindsay and their baby, Brielle (emphasis mine):
After spending some time photographing mom and Brielle, I don’t know why, but I thought to myself that since I have come all the way out here we might as well get dad in the room for one shot. Again – interrupting him from his sports highlights and last moments of relaxation as he was scheduled to be back in Afghanistan in a few days – he agreed and joined his wife and came into the nursery. It didn’t help my cause that I asked him to remove his ball cap, and then bluntly telling him that he’ll need to go fix his hat hair in the bathroom. He came back, and I rushed through a few shots as quickly as possible to keep the peace between us. Immediately after those final shots Brielle started to cry, and cry loudly! We left Brielle with Dad to take care of business as I packed up my gear and Lindsay saw us to the door.
As terribly sad as the events have been, Hornung hopes that the picture of Greff and his family will assist, even to a small degree, in Lindsay’s mourning process. He goes on to write:
This is the first time I have ever fully realized the power of our minds, instincts, and gut feelings. As disinterested as Byron was in having his photo taken, something made me go through the uncomfortable efforts of interrupting him from his sports, taking off his cap, and fixing his hair for just three clicks of the shutter.
Below, see the last professional image that was taken of Greff and his family (minus one child who was in school that day):

Posted on November 2, 2011 at 6:50pm@Rose Ellen, You are truly a vile human being. If you cannot see the difference between an American soldier that is fighting to give freedom and rights to a population that is ruled by evil cowardly bastards and the suicidal martyrs of mohammad, you are worthless. Furthermore you are doing a disservice to your religion and helping to perpetrate the belief that muslems are indifferent to human life and values. You do not deserve to live in a Country such as ours where you are not summarily executed and persecuted solely for your religious beliefs, such as the nation states of islam.

Report Post »I have watched your deranged and twisted rants for some time on this site and needless to say I have actually felt pity for you, that is until today. I am stationed in Kabul Afghanistan, and I was about 500 meters away from where this hero and 16 others were violently murdered by cowards with zero regard for human life. I felt the explosion, saw the smoke and watched the tears stream down the faces of their comrades in arms. I saw the look of grief on the faces of the other Soldiers in the convoy as they struggled to come to terms with the fact that their friends had been killed before their eyes. I can tell you the story of how a Soldier with tears in his eyes carried the body of a military service dog out of the wreckage of that bus with the same reverence that was given to the fine men and women that perished. You say that these people “lived by the sword, and died by the sword”? Did you know them, any of them? Did you know that over half of them were civilians just trying to make a living so that they could feed their families? Did you know that the one woman who was killed was a Muslim, who was adored by the other members of the company she worked for? Maybe you were there when one of her friends with tears in his eyes placed a single pink rose at the base of her picture the day of the memorial?

Rose_Ellen, you know not of what you speak but I do. I was there, I saw and felt their pain, I knew these people, worked with them, spoke with them and I promise you none of them deserved what happened to them. Maybe one day Rose_Ellen you will wake up and learn to be grateful for this wonderful gift of life that you have been given, a life with freedoms that have been bought and paid for with the blood, sweat and tears of people who are far better than you. It cheapens their sacrifice to speak of it in such a callous way. As a recently retired member of a military reserve component, and a Platoon Sergeant in reconnaissance unit, with several deployments, I have written letters to parents, and other family members after the loss of their sons, husbands, brothers etc. Each loss effects more people than just the soldier’s immediate unit and family. In some cases the loss is suffered by entire communities. But regardless of the scope each man / woman is to be honored and remembered and spoken of in honorable terms. Regardless of the outcome of these wars, we cannot allow these sacrifices to be cheapened or devalued simply because the politicians or command authority made decisions based on political expediency and not strategic goals. Otherwise this soldier and my soldiers, my friends, sacrifices will be for naught. Speak of them admirably and honor their sacrifice. Please do not treat their deaths lightly by using such slang descriptions. Thank you for supporting your son and thank him for is willingness to serve. It is a small segment of his generation that has shouldered the load and paid the price in these wars and they deserve this nations undying gratitude.

Tell your husband a fellow patriot is telling him to get his rear in gear:) No one plans on dying (short of some whack job intent on suicide). But how many people left on the morning of 9/11 and had words with their spouse before leaving the house. Their last parting comment was not a happy loving comment, but concerned of this issue or that, which in the larger scheme of life was trivial. How many had planned on getting a family picture “later”. I have the UTMOST respect for your husband and ALL who are serving our country putting their life at stake daily. That said, he needs to think about his kids wanting to see him in a picture showing his love for them (and this said even if he grows old). I am certain he loves them and they will very much appreciate it later, even if that is when he dies at 105, shot by a jealous wife:) Again, God Bless you and yours.

Perhaps this will be an unpopular statement, but I am not so sure your statment is completely correct. The subject of the value of life just isn’t that black and white. We are fighting a war that pits American lives of men who are honorable, caring and generally good hearted against the lives of men who seek to kill INNOCENT human beings as a means to an end.
You need to remember, this isn’t really one nations army against another. This is our nations army against a non-governmental terrorist conglomerate. This isn’t a traditional WWII style war where fighters on both sides are fighting because of loyalty to country. The folks our soldiers are killing are not military personal, they are murderer’s. Period. Many would disagree that their lives are worth equal to the lives of our military personal. And I would probably be one of them.

The only thing I would do differently from what we are doing is to ditch all the nation building. We should have gone in there, killed the terrorists and ran off the terroist governments (Sadam, Taliban) and then left. I agree we should be outta there by now, but I do not agree that we should have never gone and I do not feel sorry for any terrorist or governmental sponsor of terror who loses his/her life at the hands of our military.

Look up the statistics — how many civilians are killed by war.

Vekorik: You are right in the extent that media manipulates both populaces, however al Jezeera trains the kids from birth, as do their parents, to HATE Western Civilization. Shamanworld has a point only in that initially all people are born equal. If you take his point to the logical conclusion, Hitler would have the same value as say Gandhi or Mother Theresa, both had families at one point that loved them. This is ludicrous at best. Good and Evil has existed since the beginning of time and will be a constant battle until the end of days. The water gets muddied when politicians stop putting “freeing people from an oppressive rule” in front of “special interests”. We are in this thing and those that do not believe it is a Holy War, I think are at the least not looking at it deep enough. Whether we should be in it or not could certainly be argued, but at this point we are. Can anyone identify a radical Muslim Terrorist from a “peaceful” Muslim either here or abroad by looking at them, especially when the religion encourages lying in an attempt to convert? How about a solution to the Radicals who are using the cloak of “Freedom of Religion” against us? While America is battle weary at this point and perhaps rightfully so, we likely have not seen the worst of it in terms of it landing on our shores.
