‘Plague of Muslims’? France to Debate Role Islam, Secularism Play in Society

PARIS (AP) – French President Nicolas Sarkozy‘s ousted adviser on diversity called the president’s conservative party the “plague of Muslims” amid a growing furor over its plans to debate Islam’s role in France.

Even Prime Minister Francois Fillon, a prominent member of the governing UMP party, is distancing himself from its debate next week on secularism and religion in France. Fillon said Thursday he won’t take part.

Many of the debate’s critics fear it could lead to the stigmatization of French Muslims. Its backers say it is needed to reaffirm France’s secular traditions and address evolutions in French society – such as a growing demand for mosques and Islamic butchers – in a country with western Europe’s largest Muslim population.

Sarkozy fired his diversity adviser Abderrahmane Dahmane last month after Dahmane criticized the debate.

In an interview Thursday, Dahmane told The Associated Press that he wants to rally Muslims against the UMP and its leader, Jean-Francois Cope, in charge of the debate.

“We are going to engage the whole (Muslim) community against Jean-Francois Cope and against his party. Cope’s UMP is the plague of Muslims,” he said.

Dahmane is a controversial figure of Algerian descent who has called on French Muslims to wear a green star Tuesday in a sign of protest, similar to the yellow star that Jews were forced to wear under Nazi occupation

    The problem with UMP is that they are “infiltrating” France, not “integrating” into it. They have utterly no respect for the culture of France… they complain that they are being discriminated against, when it is they who reject the state and the mainstream. They are a foreign entity defying the basic sovereignty of France… no wonder France has begun to treat them like a foreign invader.

    I support France in being a secular country. There may be some anti-muslim sentiment, but I think it’s better to debate what the secular state is about than just criticize a religious group. Here in the USA (and especially on this site), the idea of the US being a secular country is apparently still up for debate. So here you just criticize.

      France is where it is because it is a secular country. The Naked Public Square just doesn’t work in the long run. SOME form of positive spiritual identity has to be at the center, however tolerant it is of dissenters and aliens. Nature and civilizations abhor a vacuum. Secularism must be defended by positve beliefs about the nature of man and freedom, and the common good, not just by the refusal to have any beliefs.

    Muslim religion is their law. Their law / religion wants all of us dead. I really don’t think the muslim / islamic people should be in any other country until they make a few changes & move into the 18th or 19th century…. at least. Maybe have a quick look back at what their doing right & what their doing wrong. Perhaps a “progress check”? I’m all for the melting pot theory… Heck, I was taught that back in the early 60′s. Live next door to me if you want. I don’t want to have to build gun turrets at the corners of my property to protect my family….

      We need to look back at what they have done? And shall we look back at what Christianity has done? For example the Crusades and the wars that happen centuries ago when the Christians killed millions of Muslims. We need to learn how to live together because the hatred on both sides will only make matters worse. Christ taught love and forgiveness – but we don’t seem to be living those principals! And according to history, Islam was a religion long before Christianity came into being.

    France has a problem that all western countries share. It’s culture is dying because they no longer believe in it anymore. Secularism was created by Christianity and was dependent upon a Christian culture to give it structure. Like many young punks who despise their parents western Enlightenemnt societies began to think they could do without that which created them. Now they are finding secualrism isn’t enough to hold the center.

    Furthermore, their populations are dying because affluence has made them hold child bearing as option of luxury or as a disposable burden.

    They need immigrant labor and these immigrants have a stronger more confident culture than the weak effete secular westerners. The eloi have invited the morlocks to come work for them. We know how that worked out in Well’s novel.

    What a big problem they cause wherever they go. They do not want to melt, they want to take over. There should be a limit on how many can come into a country and it should be a small number. Or else that nation who wants to maintain their own traditions and customs will find themselves in more trouble than they can handle. Everyone seems afraid to speak the truth.

      My comment was also a reply to one that was removed, that is why it is out of context.

      I am not arguing that Islam produces some evil ideas. What I am saying is that if you let these secularists get their foot in the door by outlawing Islam then every other religion is going to have a major problem. That means in America as well as France.

      I understand all the knee-jerk reactions to this subject, but the way to beat the fanatical Muslims is not to outlaw the religion but to not let them take over. There is a balance here.

      France has a huge problem. In an effort to prove their moral superiority over America during the Civil Rights years, the French stuck by the idea that they were so open they could assimilate people from any background into the French way of life. To prove it, they stopped taking statistics. To this day, they have no clue how many Muslims there are in their country. And, like the media here, they are proud of how well they ignore the cries of Allahu Akbar when hooligans overturn buses and riot in the streets.
      But in even MORE idiotic fashion, they claim openness and tolerance, and SECULARISM as the answer to everything. And to prove it, they ban religious symbols in schools. When you try to enforce belief via legislation, you get the huge backlash of large groups of Muslims proving how little control you actually have over them.
      I wish the Muslims there had more self-control, and turned to non-violent means of protest. But I stand BESIDE them in this fight to maintain their religious FREEDOM. Thought control doesn’t work, better to fight ideas with ideas, beliefs with beliefs. Convincing them to change their beliefs is hard, but is the only lasting and viable solution, imho.

      The Islamization of Europe has become such a problem that certain leaders are finally paying attention…

      What the Liberal “lamestream” media calls “Far-Right” groups are now becoming mainstream throughout the European Union as more and more Europeans become frustrated with the results of forced Muslim immigration.

      Perhaps if Muslims would just integrate into or at least show respect for French society, it wouldn’t be such a problem; but it appears that many Muslims worldwide are more concerned with taking over Western countries; not integrating and assimilating…

      As I was reading this article the thought popped in my mind about America and it’s problem with extremist Muslims. I can see our ivy league politicians declaring to themselves that they will out do the French and create a Utopian society with the extremists. Like maybe giving them control of our government, maybe arming them or better yet handing over control of our banking system to show that we are better. Damn liberals and progressives around the world have given them an upper hand even over their own people. I admit I’ve been asleep as well. I take the fair portion of blame. It’s up to us to get it straight and support people like Dr. Yasser who inform American Muslims that it is their duty to follow the constitution and separate mosque from state.
