LONDON (AP) — A U.S. military jet crashed in Libya after an equipment malfunction but its two crewmembers ejected and are safe, the U.S. military said Tuesday.
Vince Crawley, a spokesman for the Africa Command, says both sustained minor injuries and were separated because they used parachutes to eject from the F-15E Strike Eagle jet at high altitudes, ending up in different areas.
The crash occurred Monday night at 2130 GMT (5:30 p.m. EST). Its exact location was not given.
One crew member has been recovered and an operation is currently under way to recover the other one – “but we know he’s safe,” said Ken Fidler, another spokesman for Africa Command.
The aircraft, based out of Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England, was flying out of Italy’s Aviano Air Base in support of Operation Odyssey Dawn at the time of the incident. The cause of the crash is being investigated.
The Air Force has said only that B-2, F-15 and F-16 fighters are participating in operations over Libya. The U.S.’s involvement in Libya is being run by Africa Command, which is based in Stuttgart, Germany.
Africa Command launched in Oct. 2008 after the Pentagon abandoned efforts to base the command on the continent after it hit resistance among the African nations, and instead posted about two dozen liaison officers at African embassies.

Posted on March 22, 2011 at 8:53amOur military forces in and over Libya, God bless each and every one,
should not be doing the dirty work of the Arab League!
We will never be told of the hardships imposed on our brave men and women
in other theaters due to the shift of their protectors-in-the-air to Libya
…at the whim of OTHER countries!
And even if the Arab League…all 57 states…

It’s all about political face saving, ya know, just as you can’t “take the lead” in this war or you might upset the Muslims or look like George Bush. Hey 0bama, unlike Bush, you forgot to ask Congress. On the other hand, I guess Congress isn‘t needed when you’ve handed your military over to George Soros’ “new world order”. You are right. I don’t think JESUS is into killing at all. It was my lame attempt to be humorous early in the a.m. Didn’t work, did it?
I do know our avowed enemies (kill ALL infidels~~~that’s us to them~~~men, women and children)~~want to see us deal and gone, out of their way. I simply think that ignoring that fact will do us in.

Posted on March 22, 2011 at 8:28amThe plan that went down is the F-15E “Mud Eagle”–used for air to ground bombing and interdiction (probably on a mission to bomb an anti-air target to help get the no fly zone established. The Air Force has been at war continuously since 1990 when Bosnia kicked off, then PGW I, then Southern and Northern Watch, then Afghanistan, then PGW II. The wear and tear on equipment without any real replacements has and is taking its toll. We paid all that money for the F-22 (which can be used in the air superiority role or the ground interdiction role like the “Mud Eagle”, but its never been used in combat–missing in action here too.

And another thing, who are we supporting in all this? If you listen to what Quadaffi is saying, the rebels are being organized and lead by Al Qaeda! If so we providing close air support for our Enemy!

This used to be the domain of the Soviet Union, the ChiComs and the Nazis, going out and attacking other nations for no apparent reason. How shameful that we’ve become habitually addicted to the same terrible action.

Posted on March 22, 2011 at 8:24amYou don’t need a stealth fighter to go against a country that has no active radar or modern jets. Mechanical failures happen even on new jets. Just ask Boeing or Airbus. Aircraft are not like cars that are dated after 5 years. I have a friend that is a crew chief on an F-15 today and even he says it is a great aircraft even now. We have B-52‘s from the Early 60’s still in the air. An F-15E is not from the 70′s, they were built as late as 2004.
Report Post »USA4liberty
Posted on March 22, 2011 at 9:47amOk…got it. The F-15E is mainly a 1980′s a/c built on 1970′s platform (F-15C). Whatever the date may be, it’s still a piece of junk with a terrible maintenance record. Yea, there are old a/c still flying…that’s because of our very capable US Airmen.
My point is that we should be using the Billion$ spent on new technology currently shelved (F-22s & F-35s) rather than keep them in training mode in the states. We’ve engaged in THREE wars and have yet to put the technology to use. (Debunk that fact!) If the US continues on the path of not utilizing purchased technology, then manned a/c will go way of the Zepplin and be replaced by unmanned Remote Piloted a/c.
And BTW, why are we in Libya? Can’t we put our resources to better use in America? We have a war on the Mexican boarder (ranchers being decapitated) and a broke economy. We can‘t afford this war or the one’s we’re currently engaged it! Why are we still in Iraq/Afghanistan? Still after Bin Laden or are our politician too afraid to pull out. Let’s get back to the basics and focus on America and the wimp leading this effort. LBJ = BHO!

He was not threatening us and to say this is for humanitarian reasons in ridiculous considering we would be at at war all over the world if that was justification. The same thing is happening in Yemen, Bahrain and Saudia Arabia, are we going in there next? I think not. If this were Bush the media would be screaming.
As far as the F-22, it is not a ground attack aircraft, it is for air to air engagements against sophisticated aircraft of which Libya has none. It would be like using Javelin anti tank missile to take out a pick-up truck. The round is worth more than the target. I would rather F-22′s stay here to defend the US.

Eglin AFB is has been building a huge infrastructure for the arrival of the new F-35.
http://www.srpressgazette.com/news/eglin-10852-force-afb.html
The F-15 has a superb safety record for !00,000 hours flown and it has been used in every conflict since it was introduced in the 70s.
I see the F-15 flying all the time at from the Test Wing of Eglin AFB and it certainly is junk. It has had numerous upgrades and changes to keep it one of the World’s Best Fighter Jets. And the Strike Eagle version, F-15E, two-seater is a deadly threat to any enemy trying to hide from it.
