‘Plantation Overseer’: Sportscaster Bryant Gumbel Turns Racial While Blasting NBA Commish

Legendary Sportscaster Bryant Gumbel turned heads Tuesday night during a televised editorial regarding the NBA’s labor union stalemate. Speaking on HBO’s “Real Talk,“ he called NBA Commisioner David Stern a ”plantation overseer.”
Gumbel said the “egocentric” commissioner is focused on “demeaning the players” rather than solving the NBA lockout:
“Stern’s version of what has been going on behind closed doors has of course been disputed, but his efforts were typical of a commissioner who has always seemed eager to be viewed as some kind of modern plantation overseer, treating NBA men as if they were his boys. It‘s part of Stern’s M.O., like his past self-serving edicts on dress code and the questioning of officials. His moves were intended to do little more than show how he’s the one keeping the hired hands in their place.”
Here’s the full rant:
Those are stern words (pun slightly intended). But according to NBC, it’s not the firs time Gumbel has invoked race while making an argument:
Gumbel has often played the race card when talking sports. In 2006, when then-NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue was leaving office, he said Tagliabue kept Players Union boss Gene Upshaw on a “leash” as his “personal pet.” The comment was widely viewed as having a racial overtone.
Later that year, Gumbel explained why he doesn’t like the Winter Olympics.
“Try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention,” Gumbel said.
Despite the comments and despite his past, Gumbel wasn’t backing down.
“Some will of course cringe at that characterization but Stern’s disdain for the players is as palpable and pathetic as his motives are transparent,” he said.

In all honesty, I’m perfectly fine with Bryant keeping his job. The more he flaps his gums, the more he outs his (and, by extension, the MSM’s as a whole) racism. I like knowing peoples’ true feelings.

Add to that the fact that the vast majority of the athletes in the NBA are black and Stern is white and it is clear that the listener is not supposed to think of an unlikely pair, as in Hank Williams’ Jr.’s comment, but to think of Stern as a vicious overseer commited to making sure the slaves stay in line. If you can’t see that difference that means your liberal blinders are still in place.

2. Gumbel called someone a name that is only associated to race in a negative way. See a Plantation owner kept slaves. Plantation owners were white slaves were black. So in today’s parlance to call someone a plantation owner is directly calling them a slave owner.

They are free to walk if the job is too tough and they don’t think they make enough money. Then, they can go out and get a relatively low paying job like the rest of us. Nobody wants to solve the problem any more than Commissioner Stern. The league, teams and owners are losing millions of dollars per week as long as this strike continues. The fans are being ignored by everybody.
I personally don’t give a rip about Basketball. I don‘t watch the games and really don’t know about or care about the league, the commissioner or the players. To me, this is another bunch of overpaid spoiled players, fat cat owners and fans, many of whom can’t afford the tickets, quibbling like vultures over the spoils.
Remember the demise of the Roman empire. The slaughter in the Colesium was all the rage and no one cared about the empire. History is repeating itself. Obsession with sports worldwide, as it was in Rome, is the panacea of the masses.
Mr. Gumble, you are just another tool of the sports “Entertainment” establishment. Your rhetoric shows it beyond a doubt!!!!!
