Plouffe Blasts Gingrich for ‘Reprehensible’ Reaction to Obama Response on Trayvon Martin Case

While appearing on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos, David Plouffe, President Barack Obama’s senior advisor and 2008 campaign manager, laid into Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich for his remarks scolding the president’s comments on the tragic death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin:
“Those comments are reprehensible. You know, Speaker Gingrich is clearly in the last throes of his political career. And, you know, you can make a decision about whether to go out with some shred of dignity, or say these irresponsible, reckless things, and he’s clearly chosen the latter path, and that’s unfortunate to the country.”
On Friday, President Obama commented on the Sandford, Florida, case involving the shooting death of an unarmed African-American 17-year-old. As the details and investigation surrounding the case are still in dispute, the president did not delve into specifics, but commented that if he had a son, “he would look like Trayvon,“ and that he can ”only imagine what these parents are going through.”
During an interview on Sean Hannity’s radio show Friday, Gingrich expressed disgust towards the president’s remarks.
“Is the president suggesting if it had been a white who had been shot, that would be OK because it wouldn’t look like him?” Gingrich said Friday. “That’s just nonsense. I mean, dividing this country up, it is a tragedy this young man was shot.”
Plouffe commended Obama’s remarks on the tragedy, blasting Gingrich on ABC Sunday for comments that the senior adviser described as out-of-pace with the majority of bipartisan reaction to the Florida case.
In a separate interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” host Candy Crowley asked for Plouffe’s reaction to the Gingrich comments as well as remarks made by Rick Santorum regarding the way the President responded to the Trayvon Martin case.
“And then, this, it is — again, politicizing it. This is, again, not what the presidents of the United States do” Santorum said in clip played on CNN regarding the president’s reaction to the Martin case. “What the president of the United States should do is try to bring people together, not use these types of horrible tragic individual cases to try to drive a wedge in America. ”
Plouffe said on CNN Sunday in response to the Santorum and Gingrich remarks:
‘I don’t think there’s very many people in America that would share that reaction. You know, this is – this Republican primary at some points has been more of a circus show, a clown show. And those two comments are really irresponsible. I would consider them reprehensible.
I think the president spoke movingly about this tragedy, as a father, made it clear that there’s an investigation going on. So I think those comments were really hard to stomach, really, and I guess trying to appeal to people’s worst instincts.’
Crowley noted earlier in the program that all of the Republican presidential candidates said the Sandford incident was a tragedy, needs to be further looked into, and shouldn’t have happened.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 9:02pmDid the kids who set the other kid on fire get arrested? Crimes happen everyday, we just expect the police to arrest and collect evidence. They may not have charged Zimmerman but allowing him to leave with the same clothes he came in with and not doing a drug or alcohol test not only makes things at least seem one sided but they are harmful to both, Martin, and Zimmerman. The evidence should have been collected and could have been used to either prosecute or exonerate Zimmerman.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 12:12amMy first thought is, why Gingrich still running? He can’t win. Is he trying to sell books, increase speaking fees, and does he just have a big grudge he can’t let go of? Certainly he can insert himself into the 24 hour news cycle by making controversial statements (he’s an expert at that), but, given that he can’t, and never could, win the nomination let alone the Presidency, why does he keep running and keep himself in the news? He can’t be President, so what’s in it for him? Does he really think he’s appealing to anyone outside some tiny core group of supporters with his remarks?

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 7:36amThere’s a HUGE difference, and you know it. First of all, Obama isn’t the one who has made this a nationwide issue.
All murders are horrible, and ones involving teens/children are the most deplorable of all, regardless of the perpetrator’s appearance, background etc. The fact that Obama hasn’t talked about the kid that was set on fire does not by any stretch of the imagination mean that he ranks it as a less of a crime than the Treyvon Martin case, and anyone who interprets it that way is a complete idi0t. There are approx. 3400 murders of kids under 19 per year in the United States. A president can’t mention all of them, let alone the most heinous of them, but when one creates such a nationwide uproar as this one has, then it is his duty to at least publicly acknowledge that it has happened. This specific case has brought to the fore so many issues regarding various policies, laws, racial attitudes, second amendment rights etc and has become a politically hot potato with enormous media coverage. It would have been totally strange if Obama hadn’t brought it up at some point.
At this stage, any decent person would have done just what Obama did, so stop spinning this into something it isn’t.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 9:37am“…but when one creates such a nationwide uproar as this one has …” MAJASDAD has it exactly right. The president saw this as a national story with a ‘white vs black’ story line and jumped in after the fact to try to squeeze some good press from it. The bottom line is that there are thousands of young black men killed yearly by other black men and those stories are on the back pages somewhere. The issue here is not the death of that kid but the fact that the president can wring some points out of a sad situation by emphasizing the racial component. How sad for a man who is supposed to be uniting the nation.

There was a white college student murdered last night in Miss. by 3 black thugs, do you think this will get his attention? Think again, it won‘t because the victim doesn’t look like he could have been Obozos’ son. Why haven’t the racist group the black panthers been arrested for vigilantism . It is illegal you know, or don’t you? Why were the black panthers in the voter intimidation case allowed to walk? The Holder “just-us” dept. dropped the charges. The direction that this countryside going in is frightening to a lot of people. The current pres is not helping the situation with his rhetoric. Let’s face it, your boy couln’t cure a ham let alone cancer. You sound like…..never mind.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 9:00pmGet back on your meds, pal! Has anyone made any comment on the case of the 21 year old white male student shot and killed on the Mississippi State campus last night, allegedly by three black males, as stated by an eye witness and surveillance cameras. Not yet! But they shouldn’t, because in this country one USED to be innocent until proven guilty by a jury of your peers, not in the court of public opinion. What’s race got to do with it anyway? Hate is hate and murder is murder period! I still stand in strong support of the second amendment and the right to protect oneself, if threatened with grave bodily harm. God help you if you threaten me or any of my family. You will assume room temperature very quickly. God help us all.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 5:25pmIt used to be that if a president commented on a criminal case it would prejudice the case to the extent of not being able to prosecute it. I think in this case it may do that also. Of course Obama can’t keep his mouth shut for one second if he thinks it will help him politically. What an idiot.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 5:22pmGlenn did you ever come out and admit you were WRONG about Ron Paul concerning his ‘earmarked’ spending?
‘I don’t want someone else thats the same’ Well Glenn if they ALL did what Ron Did concerning earmarks…we wouldn’t be having this discussion now would we?
Earmarks 101:
Report Post »Earmarks are not all bad. Earmarks=TRANSPARENCY and are a way for Congressmen to ‘get back’ tax dollars for the people they represent/constituents.
If there were no earmarks then there would be NO transparency for that money, and THAT money still gets SPENT. The money that would have gone to the ‘earmark’ instead goes to the executive branch (i.e. Obama) and the executive branch would spend this money however it/he see’s fit without DISCLOSURE. By earmarking and then voting against the bill Ron represents his constituents and at the same time is making the money TRANSPARENT.
If those bills are NOT earmarked, the money is still SPENT (with NO transparency by the executive branch). By earmarking the bills you are making the money TRANSPARENT.
Ron Paul has NEVER voted for an earmark.
Cutting the number of earmarks does NOT cut spending. Earmarks account for roughly 1% of federal spending FYI.
It makes sense to earmark the alloted funds and KEEP transparency vs NOT earmark and still spend the money with NO transparency.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 5:42pmSomeone named Glenn just called me and told me to tell you this…
Ron Paul stuffed legislation with earmarks that benefit his constituents and thus his reelection, and then vote against the overall bill knowing full well it will pass over his objections so he could claim to have opposed all the spending in the first place. Paul is nothing more than a big government Libertarian who plays the inside Washington game just like many others. A man of principle my arse.

lol Time. So let me ask this. As a Congressmen you are have to make a decision. Which is it Time? Do not earmark and give that money to the executive branch i.e. Obama with NO DISCLOSURE? Or do you earmark it and then vote AGAINST it thus keeping transparency?
Cutting earmarks will not cut the budget one iota. If Glenn had ‘more of the same’ like Paul then NO politician would vote for an earmark. Now Time I do have to agree that Dr. Paul prolly puts these in knowing full well they will likely pass, but he is forced to pick the lesser of two evils.
Pick one.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 10:22pmAnd yes…it would be nice had Glenn told the ‘whole’ story.
One more thing. Ron was elected to represent his constituents correct? Had he not earmarked, then he would not be representing his constituents (what he was elected to do). We all need to demand our Congressmen earmark, and vote against it. Hopefully keeping the transparency. I don’t want Obama using that money to build bridges in Iraq, or waterboard American citizens.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 5:15pmTo Mr. Plouffe’s grandstanding against the Republican candidates, I believe he is as out of line commenting as his boss. Why should the POTUS comment on one isolated incident in FL when every day innocents are being murdered on the streets of Chicago, Philadelphia, Camden, ….(insert favorite crime zone here)? Is it because of possible race-baiting overtones? Is it to further divide our country? If Obama had a son…….; he doesn’t! He can’t know what the poor kid would look like.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 5:08pmI think the “Puffset” would be quite surprised that there are many tens of millions of Americans that see the truth in Gingrich’s statement. Barry NEVER gives calls to the parents of whites murdered by blx. His racist Attorney General DISMISSES those cases while prosecuting the reverse. Just think back to the stories of racial attacks against whites in Philly (some caught on camera) that NEVER got any attention, and certainly NOT from President Marxist.
The Demoncrats are making race an issue in this election. They might just be surprised that the race card has lost most of it’s power because of mis-use. Those that suck in on that narrative already vote Demoncratic.
