Police: Assault Rifle Used in Florida Mall Shooting, One Man Dead

Police in Fort Myers, Fla. said one man is dead after a shooting with high-powered assault rifles at a crowded Florida mall Friday night.

More than 100 rounds were fired when an unknown number of assailants pulled up in a car beside two men in the Edison Mall parking lot and started shooting.

One of the men was killed. The other was not hit, CNN reported.

Lt. Jay Rodriguez of the Fort Myers Police Department said shell casings were found up and down two rows of the parking lot, suggesting the attackers were targeting a man “as he was running towards the mall.”

“Three vehicles were completely shot up. The wall of the mall was shot up pretty good,” he told CNN, adding that the mall was swarming with thousands of holiday shoppers.

According to local NBC affiliate WBBH-TV, police believe the man who was killed had around 50 to 60 rounds shot at him.

“I was at entrance of the door. I heard popping and thought it was fireworks. But I said, ‘No, that is not fireworks,’” witness Frank Eramo told WBBH.

Police are still looking for the suspects. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.

    If this man deserves Mercy now, He had better been trusting GOD before he started collecting lead as a hobby. The biggest loss I fear, is another ***** in the, already weakened, security, freedom and safety for free Americans including the implications that BIG BROTHER can use against the 2nd ammendment.

      i was at the hooters about 1000 yards from where this happened last night at 10pm and it was quite a scene. the shooting happened around 9pm so i wasnt there for that, thank god. you dont see things like this that much here, that is, a brazen shooting in a public place. i have got to think this was some how drug related because there is a bit of a cocaine trafficking problem in florida. fyi, in case you‘ve been living under a rock sense the 70’s. well, merry christmas i guess.

      “Assault Rifle”? NO an “Assault Rifle” is a select fire weapon, AKA Burst or Full Auto.
      “High Powered” If this was an AK or SKS type rifle then it fires 7.62×39mm, about the same power as your grandpa’s 30-30. AR type rifle .223/5.56×45mm This round is typically used for varmint hunting and is only barely considered for small deer at relatively close ranges. Will these rounds kill man? Absolutely. But no-one considers them to be High Powered (whatever that is) As long as the so called “good guys” in media continue to use the terminologies set forth by the Anti-Gun crowds we will continue to lose our 2A rights. I have thought about writing a book called “The objective media’s guide to writing Firearms related stories“ Just imagine if your doctor got away with researching your health the way these ”Writers” do.

      EX: High Capacity clips…..first off they are Magazines if the cartridge’s fit inside, Second if the Magazine is designed for a million rounds it isn’t a “High Capacity Magazine” it is a Standard Capacity Magazine! Likewise if they ban any over ten rounds and it will fit more, then it is a Reduced Capacity Magazine! They don’t call the gas tank in your car a “High Capacity Fuel tank”

      @Wedon’t — as a matter of fact, there are many other kinds of rifles other than assault. An assault rifle is usually a carbine w/a magazine of 30 rounds or more of .223/5.56 or 7.62 ammo w/a burst or automatic selector switch as well as single shot, semi-automatic function.

      As “stinkingbadges” pointed to, “assualt rifle” is a dumb term. If it was a fully automatic rifle (M16, thompson…) then yes, it is an assault rife, if it is a mean looking gun, then it is probably just an ar-15, which is just as assault ready as a semi-automatic pistol, which most are… I can have an assault rock, or an assault bat, but just because something is murdered with a gun doesn’t make it an assault rifle.

      On another article written about a week ago, I learned that the AR in the AR-15 doesn’t stand for assault rifle, it stands for Armalite, who created the first AR’s. The brady campaign and the anti-second amendment people are the ones who continue the idea of AR = assault rifles.

      Modern ARs don‘t jam unless you don’t know how to use them. They are the best all purpose rifles in the world. They are good from anywhere close to 500 yards. They are light and use light ammo that allows you to carry lots of it. The bullets travel faster than an AK and do just as much damage. There is no kick so the shooter can keep his sights on the target easily and quickly. And even be kept easily on target in automatic. Great gun.

      I have a Saiga AK-47 with a scope. I can hit a 20 ounce bottle at 100 yards. So I’d have to disagree on it not being accurate. The prob with gang bangers, is the AK is a status symbol. I doubt they do any range time. One of my kids could do better than that.

      According to the video, the man was hit multible times. Give me a good old (and I mean old) Model 1911. It served me well during Nam and I averaged 24 bullseyes out of 25 at 75 feet on the range. After 9/11/01, I could still hit 23/25. I grew up on a range, rode with a 30-30 saddle rifle for wolves, used a 12 ga. for birds/ducks/geese, a .22 LR for rabbits/squarrels, and carried a 1911 for wild boars.

      Trouble is, nowadays, we have very few men who grew up shooting – takes longer to teach recruits the hand/eye coordination for accurately placed shots – and you learned to be accurate because you worked to pay for the rounds.

    Lock them up for life? Lock them up? Who said lock them up? Are you serious give them a trial and if found guilty hang them immediately in front of the courthouse and let them hang there for a few days. Until they begin to stink.

    The reason we have so much of this crap going on now is there is no punishment. We have to get over this pacifistic reaction to murder. Can we no longer put ourselves mentally in the place of the murdered. Why are we affording rights and privileges to these murders they do not afford their victims? To those of you who are so pacifistic I know you think it is terrible for someone to say “Hang’em High.” However, that attitude stops it, while you attitude rewards it!

    It was in the hippy 60′s all this crap started. Somebody came up with the idea punishment was not a deterrent. Well it was and is. We in Arizona, Texas, Montana and Wyoming are smart enough to know that. And yes I know there are some other good western states like the Dakota’s, Idaho and Utah. Seems the eastern folks, many of them well meaning good people just got the wrong idea. Just exactly whose rights have been violated here the shooters or the ones who were shot.

      There is one way I will agree to just locking them up. Reinstate Yuma prison and bring back the black boxes and send them all for a month long stay in one. A few days in the Southern Arizona Sun with no water or breaks will change anyone’s mind about committing a crime of any kind. Think it’s cruel and unusual punishment? Well ask those who were killed in these assaults on the human race just exactly what that is.

      I cannot understand what it is that makes Americans so pacifistic, but we have become pansies with our pacifistic attitudes.

      An assault rifle is a selective fire (selectable between semi-auto and fully automatic) rifle (capable of being fired from the shoulder) that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine

      The above is the definition, however the media believes an assault rifle is any military looking weapon. Especially if it looks scarey to ********.

      According to the news all firearms are assault weapons. If you use a bat and kill is an assault bat??? Nope. You can use a revolver in a crime and the news will show a silhouette of an ak or ar in the back drop. It’s their way of making all weapons look bad. Its typical they never talk about why some “assault rifle” shooter pops off hundreds of rounds and shoots one person. It proves that most of the shootings are done by gangsta movie and video watching thugs. If a legal responsible shooter who trains regularly intentionally went on a rampage the outcome would be much different. Its usually arbitrary in nature and things who have illegal weapons to begin with can’t hit their target. So lay off the legal law abiding gun owners and tell the truth. couple of hundred million firearms in the hands of citizens in the US compared to the few shootings I think the odds are favorable.

      An “Assault Rifle” is a battlefield rifle that can fire on full automatic and/or burst (3-round burst usually). If the rifle(s) used could only fire semiautomatic… that does not quality as an Assault Rifle. However, the media loves throwing that term around without caring that it actually has a specific meaning. It makes stories sound that much more sensational and is often used by anti-2nd Amendment types to make rifles sound somehow more dangerous.

      Ya know, Sig Sauer Guy, it hurts a lot more to be shot to death with an assault rifle than any other type. Guns that look like assault rifles are considerably more dangerous than hunting rifles. A .223 from an assault rifle is much worse than a .30-06 or a .375 H&H. Right?

    But my question is, how do they know it was an ‘assault rifle’. I mean the shell casings might be from anything, regardless of the round. Even if the rate of fire suggests a semi-auto, that doesn‘t make the gun ’an assault rifle’. I guess it spices up the headline.

      There’s no such thing.
      The 7.62×39 (used in the AK47) is less powerful though ballistically similar to the .30-30 Win and the 5.56×45 (used in the M16) is even more of a pipsqueak.
      One of the parameters for the designation of “assault rifle” is that it fires a cartridge intermediate in power between a pistol and a battle rifle.
      The last battle rifle in US use was the M14. (7.62×51) and it was less powerful than the rifle it replaced, the M1. (30-06 Springfield, the quintessential “high powered rifle” cartridge and the standard by which all other cartridges are judged)

      That is because the TSA victims are innocent people, Can you say the same about the victims of the shooting? Time will tell but chances are they were involved in something prior that led them to become targets. Drug dealers, Gang members, hoodlums whatever you want to call them, deserve whats coming to them! I only wish it was open season! Every day I see crimes on the streets somewhere yet law abiding citizens are being harassed for dumb S#!%. I called to report a drunk driver a few weeks ago, Called the P.D. was told that I had speak with the County Sheriffs dept, called them, was told I had to call the State Patrol. I called them and was finally able to make the complaint. I followed the driver to a parking lot and waited there for over 3 hours trying to flag down P.D. and Sheriffs Deputies and Highway Patrol NONE would stop. I flashed my headlights, used a flashlight, it wasn’t their “Jurisdiction”. The Drunk had someone come up to escort them home and they tried to scare me by driving circles around my truck. Even after speaking with the State Police several times and reporting that I was being harassed they still NEVER showed up. This country is lost unless we take it back. I say every time one of these losers die Good people are saved.
