Police in the United Kingdom saw a still dog inside a vehicle on a warm day. Not wishing for the dog to perish in the heat, the authorities came to its rescue and smashed the window.
Unfortunately, their efforts were for naught. According to the BBC, “Little Willey”, who appears to be a King Charles Cavalier, was really a very realistic looking toy. The incident happened in Nottinghamshire after police responded to a “call made in good faith” and resulted in about $288 worth of damage.
Luckily, Little Willey’s owner Gordon Williams, 80, believes the police did the right thing:
“I know Little Willy is quite realistic and if they weren’t sure about it, they did a good thing as we don’t want any more dogs dying in the heat of a car,” said Mr. Williams.
The police used this mistake to make a statement asking residents to think twice about what they leave in their vehicle in plain view:
“In this case officers believed a dog could be suffering due to the heat of the day and its life was potentially at risk, so felt there was no other option but to enter the vehicle.
“This is a perfect example of why drivers need to think about what they leave on view in their car, both in terms of other people’s perception of the objects and in a bid to deter opportunist thieves.”

BBC reports that Williams and the police are in discussion over the cost of the damage. Williams said for now Little Willey won’t be taking any car rides with him.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 3:38pmOMG!! What about babies??? You hear of babies being left to die in their carseats in hot cars every year. While I appreciate their concern, one would think a baby would be high on the list to save.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 4:50pmYou don’t have to leave dogs to die in order to save a baby. It is possible to do both. This vehicle happened to have what they thought was a dog. I’m sure that if they saw a baby they would have done the same. IT’S NOT EITHER/OR.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 10:43amLook at the toy in the second picture, it is tiny. Not only is it tiny, but the toy appears to have been designed to look like a full grown dog and not a puppy. It would be quite easy to tell the difference between a toy and a dog by looking closely.
However, someone said they couldn’t see the dog that well because of the FROST on the windows. FROST = very cold. Very cold = A dog not dying in a hot car.
And some of you are claiming they did the “right thing” by not making the SLIGHTEST effort to see if it really was a dog and not just easily indentifiable decoration? No, they were idiots, and they need to be treated as such.
Then this man has to go through “talks” about working out the costs of the damage? There would be no talks other than me sending a bill for the damages, the time involved for repairs or to make other travel arrangements, etc.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 11:05amThe Nanny Police State is alive and well. Maybe their efforts at being nobel would better be served breaking down the doors of a abortion clinic to save innocent babies from slaughter.

The police screwed up, and they are lecturing the residents? Am I the only one disgusted at this?

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 8:27amI was just thinking the exact same thing. This is the nanny state out of control. They make the mistake and somehow it’s the citizens fault.

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 9:43amWhy the hell would this be the nanny state??? So you are saying if it was indeed a live dog it is wrong for them to break the window to get the dog out of a hot car????? I cannot tolerate people who think animals are just throw away things!!!!! They did the right thing. This idiot man should have known that something like this would happen…the stuffed animal does look very realistic!!!!!!

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 12:40pmDear God, Lolab! The cops broke the window of a private individual without gathering sufficient evidence, and you claim the owner was an idiot? That makes about as much sense as assuming those with whom you disagree consider pets to be throwaways. Oh, wait, you did that, didn’t you?
