Police Raid Occupy DC, Protesters Not Evicted

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Dozens of U.S. Park Police officers in riot gear and on horseback converged before dawn Saturday on one of the nation’s last remaining Occupy sites, with police clearing away tents they said were banned under park rules.

That move left large swaths of open space and raised questions about exactly what would remain of the encampment.

Still, police said they were not evicting the protesters. Those whose tents conformed to regulations were allowed to stay, and protesters can stay 24 hours a day as long as they don’t camp there with blankets or other bedding. Police threatened to seize tents that broke the rules and arrest the owners.

The police used barricades to cordon off sections of McPherson Square, a park under federal jurisdiction near the White House, and checked tents for mattresses and sleeping bags and sifted through piles of garbage and other belongings. Some wore yellow and white biohazard suits to guard against diseases identified at the site in recent weeks. Officials also have raised concerns about a rat infestation.

According to the Washington Post, police said they found urine-soaked bedding, bottles of urine and dead rats while they were clearing the site.

Police by mid-day had arrested four people who refused to move from beneath a statute and two others who crossed a police line.

The National Park Service, which has allowed the protesters to remain in the park for months, has said it will give protesters notice if police decide to clear the park. Police on Saturday were careful to say they were not evicting anyone or closing the park, but were instead stepping up enforcement of an existing ban on camping.

Protesters had braced for a confrontation when the park service said it would start enforcing the ban Monday, though no crackdown happened until Saturday.

Despite what police said, some protesters said the crackdown amounted to eviction.

“This is a slow, media-friendly eviction,” said protester Melissa Byrne. “We’re on federal property, so they have to make it look good.”

The officers poured into McPherson Square just before 6 a.m., some on horseback and others wearing routine riot gear. As a helicopter hovered overhead, they shut down surrounding streets and formed neat, uniform lines inside the park.

The police initially turned their focus to dragging out wood, metal and other items stored beneath a massive blue tarp – which protesters call the “Tent of Dreams” – that had been draped around a statue of Maj. Gen. James McPherson, a Union general in the Civil War. Protesters agreed to remove the tent.

Later, in a lighter moment, Park Police used a cherry-picker to remove a mask of 17th-century English revolutionary Guy Fawkes that had been placed on the statue.

The mood turned more tense, with occasional shoving, in the afternoon as protesters complained police were indiscriminately seizing tents.

Jeff Light, a lawyer who represents a couple of Occupy protesters and who was at McPherson Square, said he expected to challenge the police actions in court. He said he was frustrated because a lawyer for the government had said there were no plans to seize tents that complied with the regulations. As The Blaze previously reported, a federal judge ruled Tuesday that Occupy demonstrators must be given fair warning if police intend to evict them.

“Here they are,” Light said, “doing something different than what they said in court.”

The Washington demonstration is among the last remaining Occupy sites, enjoying First Amendment protections by virtue of its location on federal park service property.

Similar to the New York protesters, who strategically occupied a park near Wall Street to highlight their campaign against economic inequalities, the District of Columbia group selected a space along Washington’s K Street. The street is home to some of the nation’s most powerful lobbying firms.

When we were in DC for Restoring Honor we walked past many actual homeless who were sleeping on park benches (sitting upright mind you). I wonder how many of the actual homeless were kicked out of the parks by OWS so they could occupy. Most of these homeless were people who the cops actually know by name and take the time to talk to daily.

About a month before that, met a gal that had an interesting background(I am a magnet probably because I love people & enjoy God’s creations-however, DO NOT LIKE MEAN-SPIRITED PEOPLE) and she had helped me with my mom when mom had to go to a nursing-home.I told her about my beloved cat and she said with her wheat-grass machine, she said give your cat a dose of wheat-grass juice. I am not kidding, gave my cat a shot of wheat-grass with an eye-dropper straight into her mouth….in about a minute my cat looked at me, jumped down from the table, after being listless, not eating, she walked around meowing and bright-eyed and bushy-tailed! She lived 5 more years & both of us got a shot of WG at least twice a week. I read-up on this magic-seed-to juice. Went to a place where you could get wheat-grass shots(cup of the juice & drink-it like a shot of whiskey). Can’t find any places where I live now so buy the powder and put into gel-caps. Tufu…Yuk!

Warn them once and then clean them out; those who follow orders let leave, those who resist or turn violent arrest and prosecute. I wonder when Obama will order the army in to protect the OWS bands.

He won’t Snow. He needs violence to occur. It’s the only way to call off the election. I’ve said this before. This is all one big chess game. Each move is calculated and war gamed. This is going to be a VERY interesting year………

That does seem to be in the cards and WOW, Alinsky playbook. After all this time, no coherent message, no list of demands or grievances, just disorder an mayhem. DC would be a great place to train dogs and new rubber projectiles out.

And cops and soldiers will be forced to play along else they lose their jobs/receive bad conduct discharges.

The stock market is surging on phony economic news. People are hanging on by a thread. Sadly, many will bow down in the false hope of surviving. Upheaval and martial law sure appears to be in the cards as far as I can tell.

Sorry Drago… but, OWS is like ******, can‘t live with them and can’t shoot them. Jail time is the only thing they will understand. Why, you might ask? Well, 3 hots and a cot is all they are asking for…. I say give it to them. I’ll kick in another 3% in Federal taxes to house them in a Federal prison for the rest of their sorry lives. How about sending them to Maricopa County? How does that song go; Pretty in Pink?
