Hundreds of Boston police officers tore down the Occupy Boston encampment early Saturday, evicting protesters and bringing the 10-week rally to a close.

At least 46 protesters were arrested in the “lightning-swift operation,” the Boston Globe reported. Police moved in about 5 a.m. and the entire operation was finished in less than an hour, police said.

Police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said protesters were “very accommodating” to police, though about two dozen demonstrators linked arms and sat down in nonviolent protest and police soon began arresting them. She said police moved in to “ensure compliance with the trespassing law.”

The arrests were for trespassing, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Driscoll said. No injuries were reported.

The city had set a deadline for midnight Thursday for the protesters to abandon the site but police took no action until Saturday.

According to the Globe, demonstrators ran for the camp yelling “Wake up! Wake up!” when police first arrived. Within 20 minutes, about 50 tents had been torn down and a front-end loader was scooping debris from the camp into a garbage truck.

Protesters estimated between 100 and 150 demonstrators had lived in the encampment.

Protesters first erected the encampment on Sept. 30. Many pulled up stakes and left the encampment Thursday after learning of the midnight deadline Mayor Thomas Menino had set for them to leave the square, but others stayed, and some said they were prepared to be arrested.

Mayor Thomas Menino previously had said the city had no plans to forcibly remove the encampment, he appeared to become increasingly impatient with the protesters in recent days, saying the occupation had become a public health and safety hazard. He issued his ultimatum after a judge ruled on Wednesday that the protesters had no right to stay in Dewey Square.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    ****************************************
The point of the demonstrators is exactly that–it is wrong for a society to operate this way–where some people work three jobs just to make ends meet, while others do absolutely nothing but collect the benefits of other people’s hard work. You guys seem to think that the spongers are the unfortunate people without a job, health care, decent place to live, enough food to eat, who get some measly allowance fro welfare. The real spongers are the people who are getting mutli-million dollar Christmas bonuses, while 30% of their workers have been laid off. How can you not get this basic fact?

Hey dummy, the reason for the bonus is the guy makes his company money. If you made money with the least amount of effort, you also would pay the person responsible, wouldn’t you. Or would you just have a bunch of people on pay-roll doing nothing. The best thing to happen to anyone is to be laid off from a job that is obsolete. Then they can grow.why am I wasting my time trying to educate an idiot?

And who are all these “unfortunate people”? Unless they’re mentally ill or physically unable, just who are they? I don’t think that anyone objects to helping the truly needy, but don’t tell me that all the entitlements we taxpayers shovel out go to them. Forcing others to compensate laziness or irresponsiblity is greed too. People create their own fortune in this country and we taxpayers pay a huge amount of money in education, student loans, etc. so that people can get a job. What exactly do people do with the opportunity they are given? What do they have to show for their own effort? OWS? There are some greedy CEOs, but take a look at hefty government union pay/benefits as compared to the hard-working pay in the private sector. That’s not just greed, but political evergreening as union dues funnel to Progressives. Why isn’t OWS camped outside the homes of greedy union bosses, Marxist Professors, and Hollywood glitterati? It’s because OWS thing is driven by socialists and anarchists who are more interested in destroying America than actually improving it.

Pretty simple. I started with nothing. I’m 63 and I still work 10 -12 most EVERY day. This year I’ll be upwards of 400K in income from my hardwork. What do these 20 YO’s do? complain because people like me worked hard and got to where I am?

Naturally some are given things and don’t work hard for them. Most of them is because their parents worked hard to get there. There are some that simply don‘t work and don’t want to work. What do they deserve?

More importantly our entitlement programs creates back over 80 years ago have created a slave society dependent on the government tit. The tit isn’t big enough now to support everyone and we have generations of medicare, food stamps, social security, and soon to be unemployment folks that no longer know how to function in the society and EARN a living and EXCEED. They are the foundation of the Progressive Movement that is bent on taking away from hard working people and give to the enslaved people. YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO WHAT I”VE EARNED AND WORKED HARD FOR. Wake up and EARN your keep in this society and stop thinking your entitled to a damn thing other than your individual freedome which you are squandering for a hand out.

Human beings are entitled to an eight hour work day, a safe work environment, a living wage, healthcare, good quality education, safe streets in their neighbourhoods, and unpolluted food and water sources. To take away from the basic components of a dignified, normal human life of millions of people in order to give away multi-million dollar kickbacks to Scrooge McDuck is ludicrous. No one is buying this nonsense any more.

@ Baik – last post – I agree you should have a safe work environment and unpolluted water and food, that’s what basic regulation is about – and we are the safest nation on the planet in terms of food and worker safety. Good quality education… well, you get a free public school education, but ask the unions about the “quality” part… we spend more per student than any other nation. Safe streets…. if you are backing the OWS crowd, ask them why crime goes up in cities where OWS events are held… it’s because police have to waste time and resources babysitting these fools instead of spending time making residents safe and secure.
So what you don’t have on your list is the entitled to a 8 hour workday? Living wage? free health care? Hospitals will treat anyone with or without insurance, and we offer low income folks Medicaid… yet more than half our poor simply don’t enroll.

So what’s left? Entitled to an 8 hour workday: You have the right to work as much (or as little) as you like. You can work one job, 8 hrs/day if you like. If your current job doesn’t offer that, you are free to quit and find work elsewhere. Be prepared to reap the benefits of your (lack of ) hard work.

Living Wage? Just say what you mean – “Income equality” or “total redistribution of wealth”. THAT is what Occupy boils down to. It’s fine if that is what you truely believe will fix our economy, but be honest about it. You want what others have, and don’t want to have

I believe it is, we have the right to “life”, “liberty” and the “pursuit of happiness”. Since when does this mean we are entitled to free education, free medical care, all the food you want and/or a decent wage. We have the right to pursue a living and if that means working two or three jobs to achieve a “comfortable” living, then do it. Otherwise, do not and stop complaining about those who do. Education when those words were written was usually from your family or if lucky enough to live in an area that could afford to pay for a teacher at the school. Formal schooling ended by age 12/13 so you could help with the family farm/business. Your ability to purchase food is a direct relationship as to how much you are willing to work/earn. You do not want to work for free, so do not expect for anyone else to do it either, thus no free health care.
Having someone else work and then taking away their earnings so you can give it to those unwilling (not incapable) to work is paramount to making the worker an indentured servant of the recipients. Andrew Wilkow

I don’t understand the hatred for the rich. The rich provide many jobs, are big philanthropists providing o to countless scholarship funds and many charities and invest making it so that many people in this country will have retirement funds other than social security. Are there crooked rich people? Yes. Are there crooked poor people. Yes. So are there crooked middle class people. So do you hate the movie so called stars who make enormous amounts of money and who use all kinds of loopholes to work around paying more taxes? Do you hate the NFL and NBS players who make more money just by signing on to a team than any of us could ever make in a lifetime? More power to them. I don’t care how much anyone else makes if they have worked for it. I live within my means and am a happy person. With some of you, nothing and I mean NOTHING will ever be enough to satisfy you. What sad lives you must lead. These occupiers should be sent to a communist country to live for a while and see if their whining will get them anywhere there.

None of these types of government have worked.

And Stalinism was responsible for the death of millions.

“After the Soviet Union dissolved, evidence from the Soviet archives also became available, containing official records of the execution of approximately 800,000 prisoners under Stalin for either political or criminal offenses, around 1.7 million deaths in the Gulags and some 390,000 deaths during kulak forced resettlement – for a total of about 3 million officially recorded victims in these categories.” (Stephen G. Our rights have limits defined by Natural Law.
Your rights end where others’ rights begin.

OWS people are breaking the law. We cannot just look the other way and pretend that breaking the law is OK.

If our Society descends into lawlessness, then everything comes crashing down with it. Kind of like Rome burning. Nothing but ashes and broken lives left after that. And if it is bad enough, a defenseless country ripe for jealous and vengeful nations to rush in and conquer a dazed and broken society blinded by the false comfort of material wealth, and weakened by a loss of a certain fortitude that only comes from moral firmness.

Don’t cry for OWS. Cry for yourself.

@Baikonur, you’re wrong. You are Oh. So. Wrong.

You think most of the United States supports Occupy Wall Street? No, they don’t. A recent poll last month showed that support was waning. In fact, only 33% said they support OWS goals. (Which is a miracle in itself that any of them understood the goals since OWS is about as clear as mud about their goals.) http://bit.ly/sch6b7

For instance, if you OWS protesters are all about the injustice of bank bailouts and CEO multi-million dollar salaries, then why in the hell are you protesting Glenn Beck book signings? It’s inconsistent action vs. ideology that is killing your message. That and the fact that the majority of America finds rapes, drug use, baiting police into confrontations, and overall anarchy tactics repugnant.

Most Americans understand that hard work requires sacrifice. They understand no one “owes” them anything. They work their asses off at the jobs they have, they get promoted, and they enjoy the fruits of their labor. Something Marxists like you hate because you’re unable to do it.

Long past time they cleaned the place out; we had in Phoenix the Occupy Phx group bring in some tents and sleeping bags, in clear violation of the laws of the city for that park; when the police moved in to clear them out the Occupy Phx band howled about the violation of their right to protest; the officers countered about the city laws have to be enforced and gave I think four warning attempts for them to clear on out with their goods, stating they can protest there, not sleep there.

Those that refused wound up going to the jailhouse; which I thinks was about four or five.

      Gallery of Cat Folks…..
I‘ve said here before that OWS will work to the advantage of the opposition to Obama’s re-election. If this nonsense heats up next spring, and Obama/Holder/the CBC and others start comparing it, again, to the Tea Party, ‘they’ will be victimized most by it.

It is clear that OWS does not, in any way, represent the 99%. That has always been a complete joke.
I‘m a TP’er, and it infuriates me and all Tea Partiers. Its like when an elected official gets a few letters protesting some bill. They know for every one letter they get, there‘s 100’s that share that sentiment.

As a “Tea PaHty guy” I wanted to have first hand accounts of this (bowel) movement. I work nearby (in the North end) , and have, on multiple occasions walked by and through the encampment.I also drive past it on my way home , around 3ish.
There were never that many of them, around 12ish if you saw 20-30 of them , that was alot. The camp was tiny , and the larger crowds seemed to appear in the late afternoon, and were not there in the mornings. The people I had seen are your typical hippie types( well meaning but delusional folks) amd some known homeless people (ie I had seen them long before Occupy). Lately I have seen alot more media vans around , like they were expecting something to “Happen”.

You can see the park they were in on google earth, it’s tiny

Decendentof56, she has a blissful look because being arrested is like reaching nirvana for these hippies. It is their ultimate and final goal.

She’s doing it wrong, though, you‘re supposed to kick and scream and act like it isn’t exactly what you had hoped for.

Theodwulf, thanks for a very interesting perspective. It’s all Kabuki theatre to me. Everything is carefully planned to look as though it was organic. The media made fun of the Tea Party, and many called it “astro-turfing.” But the OWS protest is THE biggest astro-turf protest we’ve ever seen! How is it that “suddenly” groups of people were setting up camps across the country (let alone spreading so quickly to other countries?). And the media love to zoom in on a few and then insinuate it was some huge group. However, welcome to the Internet Age where we have folks like you telling the truth.

Protest all you want, but once you start “camping out,” guess what? You’re now squatting. Pretty much every city doesn‘t want that and all it does is make the protest look like it’s a bunch of self-entitled whiners.

Here’s the deal: America has its eyes wide open now and we can see OWS for the Marxist movement it is. You don’t represent “the 99%.” And hard-working Americans are getting tired of your crap. Want to see a list of all the leftists that support OWS? Check it out:

While I have no use for the occupy groups, I also have no sympathy for the cities they occupy. The mayors etc should have routed them from day one. By tolerating the illegal activities of the protesters, the city governments and their citizens allowed the camps to grow into the messes they are. And now the cities have to clean up the mess…and the citizens will have to pay for it one way or another.

I certainly agree. The right to freely assemble does not mean that you may do it wherever you wish, and it certainly does not mean that you can set up camp on public property where there are strict rules against it. The mayors/city councils are to blame for this.

Interesting when one views actual footage of who the occupying people are…………they are not the 99% they claim……….look at their disheveled appearance, lack of hygene, hair cuts, shaves etc. Petty? Would you as a business owner looking to hire a new employee give any of them a second glance where they to show up at your place of buisiness seeking a job? Answer honestly.

NO ONE, EVER, who mentions that the Tea Party and OWS have any similarities other than that they were protesting government is a liar….and knows it.

The Democratic/Socialiats and the militant Black racists (think.. ‘CBC’) who have often used the word “racism” in describing the Tea Party, should NEVER receive a vote form any person able to think objectively. If you are not incensed by those accusations, you just have not been paying attention to what the TP is about.

I‘ve spoken to ’BLACKS’ who attend our Tea Party meetings. If they were concerned that the TP was racially-motivated, they never expressed it to me. They had the exact concerns as I do. Only their skin color was darker. Race was never discussed or even a concern to us. As we stood and talked, I can say that race was not even part of the equation.

Any time you hear someone like S.L. Jackson, M. Waters, or E. (”we’re a nation of racial cowards”) Holder speak badly (how else would they speak) of the TP, you are hearing a complete liar.
The above-mentioned are the only racial cowards I see.

I remember watching the “Restoring Honor” and then forcing myself to watch what i could stomach, “One Nation”. The parks were left in, let’s say: one neat as a pin and the second event, in shambles….. the quality of people differed as night and day from their behaviors. These protesters probably attended the Sharpton “One Nation”, or at least their Obama- worshipping parents did.
