BOSTON (The Blaze/AP) — Police say a Utah man who was viewing child pornography on a Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Boston has been arrested.
Massachusetts State Police say 47-year-old Grant Smith, of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, was sitting in first class Saturday afternoon when a fellow passenger saw the pornographic images on Smith’s laptop and alerted the flight crew.
When the plane landed at Boston Logan International Airport just after 4 p.m., troopers interviewed Smith and subsequently arrested him.
Police said other passengers took cell phone video of Smith, a chemistry professor, looking at the images, Boston ABC affiliate WCVB-TV reported.
He has been charged with possession of child pornography, and police say additional charges could follow. His bail is set at $15,000, and he’s scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
Smith was in police custody Saturday night and couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Delta Air Lines Inc. is based in Atlanta.

Were they arrested for possession too? Why not?

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 9:22pm@JZS, Perhaps because he was a professor he was naturally a liberal and his first class flight was funded by taxpayers from whom he received a Department of Energy stimulus grant. And if he truly is a liberal then he‘ll claim that HE was the victim and he’ll try and sue the other passengers and airline who outed him for violating his right to privacy and the ACLU will defend him. LOL

No, he wasn’t a Republican he was a democratic union thug. His excuse for looking at the child porno pictures is ‘they are art.’ Must be the cousin of the liberal professor who takes provocative pictures of himself naked with one of his naked students alleging it is art. Oh these bleeding heart lib turds!

Posted on November 28, 2011 at 7:15amThere are more rich Democrats than Republicans, look at Obama’s contributors.
That said, there are also pop ups from spam emails that put that on your screen before you even realize it’s up there. I would call for an investigation to look for a pattern of child porn.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 8:01pmThe part that gets me is that The Blaze had to add “…In First Class” to the headline. As if that makes the crime somehow worse. Come on guys, you can do better.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 7:16pmAnd folks chide me for wanting public hangings to make a comeback?
How did we conquer a continent? Did local law enforcement make speedy arrests? Were the accused given trial by jury? Did they hang murderers, rapists (and horse thieves) if found guilty? You bet. Now we have generations who live without fear of reprisal.
And just a minor correction for those who wish to “dress-up“ the act that took place so that the chemistry professor could watch his ”child porn.” Call it what it is. It is the rape of a child.
But, since we kill 50,000 future citizens every year without consternation, the loss of citizen rights for those who can‘t defend themselves is becoming more or less acceptable to a portion of the world’s population. While I’m writing this, some sicko is traveling to a third world country for sex with kids.
Fear of swift and decisive retribution has to come back to the forefront of our justice system. Oh, and leave the hoods off so that others can see what the face of a man dead by hanging looks like. It‘s not a pretty sight and that’s why it was done.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 6:09pmThat’s not enough time, and here’s why: During my professional life as a psychotherapist I had numbers of these people “sentenced” to do therapy with me for various periods of time. They taught me that they regard pedophilia as normal sex, and in fact for them it is their normal. They think their is something wrong with us! They aren’t going to change their preference anymore than normal heterosexual men and women are going to change theirs to homosexuality or pedophilia or necrophilia.
You can’t even put these people on electronic leashes. They’ll bring their sexual desires to them.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 4:11pmKudos to the observant passenger who saw what’s being viewed by the subject on his laptop. People need to think about the real victims; the children and yes we need to go after the perpetrators but the viewers are contributing to the further victimizing of innocent and helpless children, or they (viewers) could be perpetrators themselves and deserves to be in the slammer or agree to some of the thoughts here, castrated……..

Its about poor horney joe looking at images of children who are forced, tricked, whatever into doing these things. Besides this isn’t a guy in pocession of a magazine. He downloaded this stuff off the internet, there is no ‘publisher’ per say. Pretty hard to find the folks who put it on in the first place. They ARE prosecuted when they are finally tracked down. Just out of curiosity what would you do if you were sitting next to him and saw that stuff?

This guy would have been better off smoking crack than looking at child porn. He’d probably get less than a year for the crack if it were his first offense.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 2:41pmI hope it was actually “child” porn. Its a shame how many people get accused of these things when the images they’re looking at are really girls 18 or over. I see a lot of pictures that look like a girl could be 14 when she’s really 20. Hard to tell these days.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 2:52pmAll porn is disgusting . Granted child pron is by far the most perverted but make no mistake porn of any kind is in large part responsible for the country’s moral decay. You make some kind of distinction between actual children and women who look like children ,You might want to rethink your priorities. Lusting after women who look like children is the same thing.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 3:01pmAn interesting question. What if he was looking at pictures of adults specifically made to look like children? What if he THOUGHT he was looking at adults dressed like children? Since the Supreme Court has ruled that manufactured digital art representing children do not constitute pornography a lot of confusing grey area is involved in some pornography laws. I would be happier if it ALL was made illegal, and viewing it in public was treated as its own crime, like public indecency.
Those who MAKE child porn should be ground into dog food…slowly.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 3:55pm@drattastic I disagree with you. We must remember that despite the fact that many on this website tend to be conservative, most proclaim to share the views of libertarians. Those who truly share the Libertarian view tend to believe porn to be no different than drugs or alcohol, homosexuality, abortion and many of the other items that “Social Conservatives” rally against. Pornography in and of itself is neither good nor evil. It’s simply a form of entertainment that some people get pleasure from and others revile against, like country music. Be careful how you choose to determine what should and should not be allowed.
Of course, Child Pornography is anathema to Libertarians as the children, unlike the adult performers who choose to be in that business, have no say in the matter.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 6:02pmDogs aren’t picky what they eat. Only their owners are. So obviously I’m thinking of homeless dogs, the kind that are out in the street when you are thrown to them.
You’ve seen what they eat, I’m sure. They’ll happily wolf down some raw pornographer-patty, barf it up, wolf it down again, expel it out the other end, and then eat THAT. The biblical view of dogs is like that of young girls about boys, “They’re gross!” :-)
