Police Hunt for Lions, Bears & Cheetahs After Mass Escape From an Ohio Farm

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (The Blaze/AP) — Schools closed and motorists were warned to stay in their vehicles as officers with assault rifles patrolled a rural area in eastern Ohio Wednesday, a day after police killed dozens of escaped animals from a wild-animal preserve, where the owner was found dead.
As authorities warned that more animals still were on the loose, three school districts in the region and some private and special schools canceled classes as the remaining bears, big cats and other beasts from the Muskingum County Animal Farm were hunted down.
Flashing signs along area highways told motorists, “Caution exotic animals” and “Stay in vehicle.”
Authorities wouldn‘t say how the farm’s owner Terry Thompson died, but said it wasn’t suspicious.* However, several aggressive animals were near his body when deputies arrived and had to be shot. Thompson, who lived on the property, had orangutans and chimps in his home, but those were still in their cages.
The bizarre situation unfolded due to the fact that the animals‘ cages had been opened and the farm’s fences had been left unsecured, police said. A sheriff says new, overnight animal sightings have not been confirmed in rural eastern Ohio, where police have killed dozens of the escaped animals.
Muskingum County Sheriff Sheriff Matt Lutz (lootz) told ABC’s “Good Morning America” before dawn on Wednesday that he believed up to 35 of the 48 animals were accounted for. He says daylight will allow officers to get a more accurate count.
“These are wild animals that you would see on TV in Africa,” Lutz said at a press conference. He told residents to stay indoors and sent updates to them via Twitter. There were no reports of injuries to the public. Here are some of the most recent tweets:

The preserve had lions, tigers, cheetahs, wolves, giraffes, camels and bears. Police said bears and wolves were among the escaped animals that were killed and there were multiple sightings of exotic animals along a nearby highway.
Lutz called the animals “mature, very big, aggressive” but said a caretaker told authorities the animals had been fed on Monday.
Tuesday night, more than 50 law enforcement officials – including sheriff’s deputies, highway patrol officers, police officers and officers from the state Division of Wildlife – patrolled the 40-acre farm and the surrounding areas in cars and trucks, often in rainy downpours. Lutz said they were concerned about big cats and bears hiding in the dark and in trees.
Neighbor Danielle White, whose father’s property abuts the animal preserve, said she didn’t see loose animals this time but did in 2006, when a lion escaped.
“It’s always been a fear of mine knowing (the preserve’s owner) had all those animals,” she said. “I have kids. I’ve heard a male lion roar all night.”
“This is a bad situation,” Lutz said. “It’s been a situation for a long time.”
Lutz said his office started getting phone calls at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday that wild animals were loose just west of Zanesville on a road that runs under Interstate 70.
He said four deputies with assault rifles in a pickup truck went to the animal farm, where they found the owner Thompson dead and all the animal cage doors open.
The deputies, who saw many other animals standing outside their cages and others that had escaped past the fencing surrounding the property, began shooting them on sight.
Staffers from the Columbus Zoo went to the scene, hoping to tranquilize and capture the animals.
Lutz said his main concern was protecting the public in the rural area, where homes sit on large lots of sometimes 10 acres.
White, the preserve’s neighbor, said Thompson had been in legal trouble, and police said he had gotten out of jail recently.
“He was in hot water because of the animals, because of permits, and (the animals) escaping all the time,” White said. A few weeks ago, she said, she had to avoid some camels which were grazing on the side of a freeway.
At a nearby Moose Lodge, Bill Weiser remembered Thompson as an interesting character who flew planes, raced boats and owned a custom motorcycle shop that also sold guns.
“He was pretty unique,” Weiser said. “He had a different slant on things. I never knew him to hurt anybody, and he took good care of the animals.”
Weiser said he regretted that the escaped animals had to be killed. “It’s breaking my heart, them shooting those animals,” he said.
Bailey Hartman, 20, a night manager at McDonalds, also said it saddened her that the animals were being shot. But, she said, “I was kind of scared coming in to work.”
Hartman said Thompson’s wife, who no longer lives with him, was her teacher in middle school and used to bring small animals such as a monkeys, snakes and owls to school. “It was a once-a-year type of thing, and everyone would always get excited,” she recalled.
This morning, famed zookeeper Jack Hanna appeared on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” where he gave advice and discussed the situation. Hanna was live at the scene in Ohio:
Ohio has some of the nation’s weakest restrictions on exotic pets and among the highest number of injuries and deaths caused by them.
*UPDATE:
CBS News is now reporting that the local mayor is saying he was told the animals’ owner shot himself and then let them loose:
According to Zanesville Mayor Howard Zwelling, the owner is believed to have taken his own life. However, before he died, he let all the animals loose.
“I did get a call from my safety director and he told me that the owner had turned them loose and had shot himself,” Mayor Zwelling said.

Posted on October 19, 2011 at 12:26pmAnd a waste of taxpayer dollars. I can guarantee that it would be far more effective, efficient, and it would actually would be financially rewarding to stop using police for this and to have local hunters get the opportunity to shoot one of these animals and pay a $200 tag after the kill. Figuring 30 animals killed so far, that would have provided the city with $6,000 in revenue and the hunters would have gotten a nice trophy and the hunters would have used a cartridge more suited to killing large game than a fmj .223 that is no doubt what the officers used in their “assault rifles” (may I just say that the term assault rifle is a fiction and does not say anything about the lethality or usefulness of the gun in question.).

Also they said they tried to tranquilize and capture them but as it got dark they worried the animals might get tranquilized and run off to hide and they would lose them. I say sucks the animals had to die and tax $ had to be spent but they did the right thing to protect the people and keep the situation from getting much much worse.

The only way was to eliminate as many as possible as quick as possible to prevent them from escaping the property. It would be possible to tranquilize perhaps a treed bear or an animal that is cornered in a controlled area but chances are that won’t happen.

Posted on October 19, 2011 at 9:07amIt was not in the news but, 2 years ago my In-laws had all of their animals let out too. We all live in Northeast Indiana, they don’t have nearly as exotic animals as this guy but, all the animals they did have were let out of their fences. In one fence there were 2 cows, 1 horse, a Redbone Coonhound named Dan, the chickens were let out of their enclosure, and finally the Reindeer were let out of theirs. My In-laws are the official town Santa and Ms. Claus in the nearby town, the reindeer are used to pull their slay in the Christmas parade and are kept in a pen while they do their Santa duties. They are also very well taken care of, in fact, they take better care of their animals than they did their children years ago. Anyway, I am pretty sure some animal nuts let the animals loose, this does not seem like a prank as the teenagers in this area know how dangerous it would be to let all of these animals run loose, not to mention they would get their pick-up trucks and shotguns taken away and probably their butts whipped. While people should be free to keep whatever animals they want within reason, if they get loose they should get only one chance, then they should lose custody of said animals. Putting the public in danger so someone can exercise their freedom to own so many dangerous animals that have had a habit of escaping is taking away the freedoms of that persons neighbors to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Posted on October 19, 2011 at 9:15amThe African kids deal with this kind of stuff on a daily basis. Also, the bears are already present in the States and a few extra shouldn’t be an issue. OH, and wolves and lions (cougars) are also indiginous to the area as well. African lions and indian tigers are obviously not indiginous and should be taken care of, but the rest will probably disappear into the farm country and woods.
And if you really wan to deal with the threat of lions and tigers you should stop wasting gov’t funded police and animal control officers and start an open season on free roaming exotic cats. Just think how many hunters would love to bag a pre-season African lion. I bet they’d pay for the opportunity to do it too! And they’d probably be a better shot than any animal control officer to boot. So the state can make money, a person can get a trophy, and the animal will have a more humane death. That’s a win, win, win and I still haven’t even added the increase to your local economy as big game hunters from nearby communities would all want a piece of that action and would buy food, gas, and lodging from your town.
In the meantime, just walk your kids to the bus stop with a rifle in tow and protect them and yourself if need be. There is no reason in the world that a parent should not be allowed to carry a rifle to protect their children any day of the year. In fact, every person should carry a gun every day for the protection of themselves and others.

Posted on October 19, 2011 at 8:49amthis is very sad. A man is dead, we don’t know why, and innocent animals are being killed. Can’t anyone find a tranquilizer gun anywhere in Ohio? Sounds like he let them out to get back at the judge for sentencing him, and maybe killed himself. The judge should have put him in jail and have the humane society take care of the animals. Too late now.

Posted on October 19, 2011 at 9:21amSure, I’ll let you have the tranq-gun if you’re the one who shoots the 600 pound wild cat with it before the sedative has taken 10 minutes to set in, if it even works.
Best solution is to start an open season on exotic cat species that are non-native to Ohio and make it a $200 tag that you only have to pay if you take the animal. This will bring in a little revenue for the city and it will make someone a great trophy while ensuring that the animal dies humanely as opposed to getting shot by a peace officer or animal control officer whose aim is often a point of contention. A decent hunter is by far a better and more humane killer than a decent cop is.

Free men do not need the permission of government to keep any ol’ animal they wish, as long as they do so safely. I do agree that if somebody is being unsafe with any animal, he bears the full brunt of responsibility. However, think of this. A person has a dog. The dog gets out of the house and bites somebody. Is the problem the fact that the owner let the dog out of the house, or the fact that people can own dogs?

Yep, all the cages don’t open themselves magically like this. I’d give it 2:1 odds that it was a PETA or another related type of eco-terrorist at work here. The reason I’m not 100% certain is that I do not know how this gentleman has his feeding routine setup, though I strongly doubt it includes things like “open all the cages at the same time and walk away” at any point in the routine.
And of course we can practically hear the sirens gearing up from the fear mongers screamnig that nobody should have any animal except a dog or a cat, that’s guaranteed, and probably the aim of the PETA type people if they’re responsible for this.

Posted on October 19, 2011 at 9:12amHi Peppa,
I’m open to any reasonable explanation on how all of the cages of all of the animals magically opened, and stayed open, at the same time unbeknownst to the owner of said animals. What do you have to offer me by way of explaining that?
Interestingly this is the first time I’ve seen your handle on this forum.

I thought of PETA too but this morning, I heard that they were looking at the possibility that he let the animals out and committed suicide.
Yeah, the similarity between “PEPPA” and “PETA” is interesting.

That’s a possibility, I’ll grant. Need to see how this plays out.
What I do know is that the cages all didn’t magically open themselves at the same time without human intervention causing it to happen on purpose.
