Police at the University of California at Davis dismantled an Occupy encampment Friday, arresting at least 10 protesters, nine of whom were students.
Videos have surfaced on YouTube of police in riot gear pepper spraying a line of protesters who had linked arms and sat down cross-legged on the pavement to protect their camp. In the footage, an officer is seen spraying the demonstrators at point-blank range.
A total of 11 people received medical treatment on the campus and two were transported to the hospital, Sacramento’s KTXL-TV reported.
“Police came and brutalized them and tore their tents down and all that stuff. It was really scary. It felt like there was anarchy everywhere,” student Hisham Alihbob told local station KCRA-TV.
Students chanted “Shame on you! Shame on you!” as officers dragged the pepper sprayed demonstrators away.

UC Davis officials had said the group may occupy the quad for as long as it wants, but could not set up camp.
“It’s not safe for multiple reasons,” UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza said.
Police reportedly gave the students a 3 p.m. Friday deadline to remove the 28 tents from campus and showed up at the appointed time when they did not comply.
Spicuzza defended the use of pepper spray, saying officers used force out of concern for their own safety after they were surrounded by students.
“If you look at the video you are going to see that there were 200 people in that quad,” Spicuzza told CBS Sacramento. “Hindsight is 20-20 and based on the situation we were sitting in, ultimately that was the decision that was made.”
Authorities are reviewing video of the incident, Spicuzza said.

Officers left the quad area after making their arrests, leaving the field in a direction not obstructed by seated protesters, CBS reported.
Demonstrators were protesting a recently approved tuition increase in the University of California system, according to KTXL.
More photographs of the incident are available at the Davis Enterprise here.

I’m thinking, perhaps the reason these kids are so misled and feel entitled to protest something of which they haven’t a clue is because the extent of their punishment as children was mommy saying, “shame on you”.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 10:33amThe police were wrong in this case. These were students protesting the increase of tuition for the second time in a year. Their protest was peaceful and not at all warranting of the pepper spray that they received. Pepper spray is to disarm or impede the actions of a violent individual and not for punishing people for the lawful right to protest. These were students on campus not urban campers blocking city streets and causing mayhem.

The protestors were told to break up camp by 3pm. They did not. I am positive the officers told them what was coming. They chose not to move. The officer in the video even seems to hold the can up one last time as if to say “last chance” before he sprays.
In MLK’s day it would have been fire hoses and billy clubs. I think the pepper spray is an indication of just how far we have advanced as a society.
And, having said all this… I have two kids that will be in college soon. And I am disgusted by the fact that while I have been saving since before they were born with intentions of helping them with school costs. Universities across the country continue to raise tuition at a rate far greater than my income (savings) has increased. Statistics for costs on a four year degree are staggering. So I am not opposed to peaceful opposition….but as so many have said here, they have to obey the law.

“UC Davis officials had said the group may occupy the quad for as long as it wants, but could not set up camp. “It’s not safe for multiple reasons,” UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza said. Police reportedly gave the students a 3 p.m. Friday deadline to remove the 28 tents from campus and showed up at the appointed time when they did not comply.
Not so hard to understand. The university faced possible civil liablility if they acted differently. People who trespass are subject to the law, and should be arrested. You don’t have the right to protest any damn way you want. Also, there is no reason a policeman should be injured on the job grappling with some jerk who’s locked arms with another protestor. Those men and women are fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, and do not deserve to be called Nazi’s just because they serve society by enforcing the law and arresting criminals.
Peace requires order. Sometimes order requires force. God bless these officers whose lives are constantly on the line, and who face the maltreatment of those they serve, and who should appreciate their sacrifice but do not.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 11:41pmHey, JZS,
I think we can all agree that the university is a private entity and not part of “evil” Government. The universtity does indeed have the right to kick people off their property, just as you and I do when someone trespasses on our property. As citizens, we all pay taxes to the government, who hires cops to enforce laws we all vote on. Those who violate the law are often arrested to protect society from chaos. And yes, police officers do have the right to kick someone off private property using whatever force is necessary. It has nothing to do with suppressing dissent.
Hope that helps.
Report Post »jzs
Posted on November 20, 2011 at 12:11amthecid100, if that’s private property, and I’ll take your word for it, then yes they do. I agree. I‘m not sure it’s wise, or that the police needed to pepper spray everyone in the face to get there, but I agree with you.
And you are correct. The police are a socialist entity. Police buildings are owned by the government, as are police cars and guns and other equipment; and policemen and women are paid by the government. The “government” meaning you and me. Posted on November 19, 2011 at 8:15amPresumably the Officers issued verbal commands that were not complied with before using the pepper spray. It would seem that the officers knew that the protestors planned to physically resist the Officers attempts to physically remove them. Consequently, the Officers made a decision to spray the protestors pre-emptively knowing that this would take much of the fight out of protestors. By spraying the protestors pre-emptively the Officers effectively softened them up and greatly increased their own safety.
It’s kind of the equivalent of carpet bombing a hostile territory before putting boots on the ground.
While being pepper sprayed does cause a great deal of physical discomfort, it is a lot less harmful than being hit with an impact weapon. The effects of pepper pray do wear off in about 20 to 40 minutes and can be treated by washing the eyes and face with large amounts of water.
While one might feel like they are going to die after being pepper sprayed, pepper spray is relatively harmless and does no permanent damage.

The law is very clear, cops don’t get to take presume the protesters are going to resist. The cops should try to move or arrest them, then react to what the protesters actually do…not what they think they might do.
How ignorant to say that the only other option available to the gestapo was to beat them with imact weapons. That’s just dumb.
As to your disinformation about pepperspray, evidently you don’t read. If you did you’d know that a certain percentage of people whose health may be compromised already, can die from pepperspray.

What does “The law is very clear, cops don’t get to take presume the protesters are going to resist.” have to do with the protesters getting sprayed? It’s not even english. You are assuming that the cops just walked up there for no reason without saying anything and sprayed them. None of us are that dumb as to think they acted without multiple verbal warnings and orders to move aside. Your clever editing is not that clever, we see 1 second before the spraying. Again your ignorance is evident here, you dismiss the fact they had formed a human fence preventing the officers from moving any closer, you are soo dumb you missed that or you see it but your just lying that you didn’t. You also lie about not knowing about the 3pm deadline they had to clean up. So please spare us your druged out wit, claiming we are all as dumb as you are only makes you look even dumber. Posted on November 19, 2011 at 10:23amWhen the protesters locked arms they went from being passive resisters to aggresive resisters. How is a police officer supposed to remove several people when they interlock their arms? If these people had not interlocked their arms, the officers would have removed them passively and no further action would have been required. But when a subject is resisting a lawful order by a law enforcement official they are taught to use a Use of Force Continuum. The keyword here is “resisting” and the continuum requires they only use a level of force one step above the force their subjects are using. It’s my opinion that if the officers had simply tried to pull these resisters apart, a melee would have resulted with injuries on both sides. They made the right call in my judgment.

And yes, those sitting people created quite a “barrier” for the cops progress. I guess I can understand that when looking at the portly cop, who probably got nicknamed Lumpy in school. Most people wanting to get by would just step between or over them.
It makes no difference if the gestapo cop warned them 479 times to move, the cops’ actions have to be measure and comensurate with the threat.
Sheesh, some of your are really dense. We’re screwed in this country when so many voters are as dense as you.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 11:03amDirty Harry, when the police tell them repeatedly to move and clear out and can see that the previous instructions to remove the tents were ignored, the protestors have already made it clear that they intend to continue to resist. There are legal and illegal ways by which to protest. Comply with law enforcement or be forcibly removed. Simple concept. Pepper spray is an excellent way for the police to take control of the situation (as is using a tazer) without causing bodily harm. Remember, the police are in a far more precarious situation in an instance like this than are the protestors. As an aside, resorting to name calling hurts your argument.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 4:34pmPepper spray is an effective tool to reduce people’s ability to resist. The police would likely have done a lot more physical damage to the protestors trying to break them up than they did after using pepper spray then detaining them. We only have a small bit of what happened available, that is what protestors like these do, they show the part where the police use force rather than what led up to the situation. It is a very common tactic and is one of the reasons why most police now record their own actions, but typically those are only available to the agency and courts during investigation. If you don’t think that, than you are either mislead, or you are trying to deceive others.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 7:52amWhat these people don`t realize is that the call to end these protest from the White House was put out earlier this week. Polls have shown that the mass majority in the USA or stongly against OWS. The problem with the poll numbers is that Obama and the Democrats own this movement. Obama has not once come out and denounce the violence from the protestors. The truth is Democrats will take a beating next year in the election and they running out of ideas to get support from their base. This movement has surely turned bad on them. JZS you can do like Allen Colmes and try to spin this in a positive light. OWS is truely the 1 %.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 8:05amBut they are as American as apple pie…sure they are. They have done more damage to the people that backed them than we could have ever done by showing their voting records. The same puke politicians who backed them are nothing but crickets in the crowd of sheeple now. These pukes are an accurate depiction of the liberal progressive platform and I hope they continue to advocate for the progressive “movement”. You couldn’t ask for better poster children to take into the next election. Maybe they should revisit history and realize that the moral majority was silent prior to the protests in 68. We voted them out in 68 and again in 72 based on middle America’s aversion to the tail wagging the dog. Keep it up OWS, we can sure use you.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 8:37amEndgamer, Van Jones tells us it`s called “ BOTTOM UP TOP DOWN INSIDE OUT ” and he wispers it to his followers. Van Jones is a Communist as is Vallerie Jarret, Who said she was Very Excited about Van Jones and that “ THEY ” have been watching Van since he was in Oakland. The White House knows who and what Van Jones is and they have no problem with him. Van Jones dream is Communism. Will they be able to pull off the Bottom Up Top Down part of their plan, we should all be praying not. Should the people of this country be concerned that they might, I thinks so.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 8:06amsee they cannot use fire hoses, cause then the LIBRETARD media would relate them to the civil rights movement…. but i say waht the cops did was right…. we have seen over the past 2 months, THAT WHEN THESE PROTESTS START TO GET VIOLENT, POLICE ARE INJURED ALSO…. so is the police have a tool that can remove people peacefully, THEN THEY SHOULD USE IT…. and every person tehre KNEW THEY WEER GOING TO GET IT, IF THEY JUST SAT ON THEIR ARSE AND DID NOTHING…. SO I BELIEVE THIS SHOWS THE DEGENERATION OF SOCIATAL VALUES… THAT WE NO LONGER LISTEN TO AUTHORITY, NO LONGER CLEAN OURSELVES, NO LONGER WORK, AND DEMAND OTHERS MONEy, and we are willing to F UP the whole system to get it…… people with this attude DO NOT DESERVE TO BE TREATED LIKE 4TH GRADERS…. THEY NEED TO BE TREATED LIKE THE CRIMINALS THAT TEHIR ACTIONS ARE. there are peacefull ways to protest and demand… as shown by the TEA PARTY… so to say this is the fault of the cops IS DUMB. if you dotn listen to cops you get arrested….

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 7:50amYes … shame on these ungrateful, ignorant and shiftless commie terrorists who call themselves “protestors”. God bless law enforcement for maintaining the good order of the community and protecting the law abiding citizens of this nation from the lawless, clueless, ingrates who allow themselves to be manipulated by forces who are only interested in their own agrandizement and power. You pitiful, pitiful fools.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 9:29amWhen we had the Tea Party rally here in Oklahoma City, I took my wife and kids to it. As we were walking to the event, we walked past two Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers who were stationed on the outside of the crowd. The expressions and body language indicated they were relaxed, and enjoying the event. Our little boys were happy to see them, and the officers were all smiles and they waved back. All good day was had by all, and didn’t see any of these loon counter protesters there.
Now compare it to these OWS events!

yes follow the “law”, like MF global who just ripped off hundreds of millions from investors…
let’s see, they can steal millions, or even billions, and goto jail for 2 years.
you, a non-elite citizen, can steal 40,000, feel guilty, give it back, and be put in jail for 40 years.
fair is fair huh… follow the law you say… exactly.. tell that to the judges who keep voting unconstitutionally, tell that to the administrations who keep bypassing “The People” exactly like a dictatorship, tell that to the “Super Committee” who is technically an Oligarchy…
The admission and use of a “Super Committee” is tyranny in and of itself. FFS people… are we Americans or not. it is our Right and Duty to overthrow this government when ruled by tyranny. we have our rights violated every single day. everyday they bypass congress (The People)… every single day. what’s the point of paying congress anymore? they won’t even stand up for themselves, the constitution or The People they are swore an oath to protect.
