Police Sweep ‘Occupy Philadelphia’ Camp, 50 Arrested

As Los Angeles cops were cleaning up Occupy LA, Philadelphia’s camp was also experiencing a police sweep.

Following several warnings and orders from the mayor to clear out of the plaza around City Hall, Occupy Philadelphia’s tent city is now closed.

Just after 1am today, police in Philadelphia swept through the encampment and removed all the tents and debris from the area. Approximately 50 protesters that locked arms in an effort to stop the police from removing their camp were arrested:

After being removed from their temporary home, the protesters took to the streets with an impromptu march. The police were monitoring the march, following the crowd as they beat their drums, chanting and marching through Center City:

Police report that two officers suffered minor injuries in a scuffle with some of the protesters. Twitter posts from OccupyPhilly claimed a couple of injuries, but none appear to be serious.

At its peak Occupy Philadelphia had more than 230 tents on Dilworth Plaza and their presence was delaying the start of a $50 million dollar renovation project. While Philly Mayor Nutter initially did support the cause of the protesters, the swarm of homeless people, deterioration of sanitation, increasing crime (including sexual assaults) and the bloated overtime costs to the city (more than $650,000) seemed to turn him.

There are reports from inside the Philadelphia movement saying that a new camp may set up on the 44 acre park on the Delaware River. The Blaze will monitor and update as needed.

    Fifty arrested? What good is that when they’ll all be released within an hour of their arrest? No jail time, fines or consequenses for their actions…You can do anything short of murder and not have to worry about doing any time in jail. The justice system is corrupted. There is no justice.

    I think that the police made a mistake and missed a great opportunity to utilize the 50 demonstrators with locked arms to benefit everyone. I for one would like to know if you use a taser on a demonstrator on one end of the group with linked arms would that person on the opposite end feel a shock? How much clothing were the protesters wearing and would that affect how many would feel the shock from one taser shot. Then how would the number change if the police used fire hoses to spray the demonstrators the shock them. The police had a perfect opportunity to experiment and find out the answers to many of these questions but failed to do so. Something they should think about if it happens again.

      are you high? the protestsers themselves are tryannical. they take up space not owned by any of them, berate anyone that disagrees with them, if theyre out occupying all day obviously theyre not working so they are depending on resources provided by everyone else- voluntariy donations and forcible as the tax payers have to clean up the mess they leave

      The only thing V doesn’t like is cops. Other than that I realized he is kinda on the same page. It isn’t the protesters marching down the street in the middle of the night screaming at the top of their lungs that he is sticking up for. It is the cops breaking it up because people actually live in that area that he doesn’t like. Hey Vman take them all in and give them some warm TEA with a warm bowl of Roman noodles. My Patriot.

      I don’t hate police or law enforcement at all. I hate their ACTIONS as individuals and as a public institution paid with my tax dollars. I don’t subscribe to the OWS protestors ideology. I support their right to protest. And no, they can’t do it on my lawn. LOL!

    Finally, the cleaning up commenses. Yet there is one thing I am wondering of now, has these various clean up sweeps come on the orders or directives of the White House as the various OWS bands have for the moment outlived their usefulness?

    Or are they now being used so Mr Obama can lay the blame for the ‘denial of rights of freedom of expression’ at the feet of the Republicans? Or to go after any future rallies held by the Tea Party?

      This was a fraud. I have been following the occupy on their own web site. In Philadelphia, they only had 3 or 4 people there. They must of shown up for the eviction.
