Police Ticket Drivers Who Honk in Support of ‘Occupy Seattle’

Police Ticket Drivers Who Honk in Support of Occupy Seattle

Seattle police are finding new ways to keep the latest “Occupy Wall Street” movement, and it’s sympathizers, in check. According to KOMO, police began pulling over cars Friday that honked in support while driving by Occupy Seattle demonstrators:

“Starting at 11 p.m. Friday, police started pulling over and ticketing drivers who honked as they drove past protesters.

When the first car – a taxicab – was pulled over, the protesters followed and shouted at police who then formed a blockade around the driver’s cab.

The cab driver was then given a $144 ticket – and protesters ended up handing him money afterwards to help pay for his fine.”

Occupy Seattle has made their presence known at Westlake Park in the Emerald City for over a week. According to Seattle PI, the supervisor of a Westlake coffee shop “owned by a giant worldwide Seattle-based coffee chain” said business is booming during the protest.

In addition to a “desire to take our government and country back from the big money interests that currently hold undue sway over decisions affecting us all,” the protesters desire that their government allow them to stay cozy. A recent post on the group’s website calls on supporters to contact the mayor’s office and police “to insist that they allow us to protect ourselves from the rain for tonight!” The park that the group chose to mount their protest in, does not allow structures including awnings for Occupy Seattle to sleep beneath.

Honking a horn without a legitimate traffic control need is unlawful. The police are just enforcing the laws. I applaud these cops actually enforcing the laws. To bad other police departments in other jurisdictions ignore law enforcement (and yes, I know it’s not the beat cops, but rather their management).

Seeing how liberal Washington state local government has turned over the last 10 to 20 years i find it hard to believe that city hall is okay with the cops giving out tickets like this. Maybe there is hope yet for our conservative brothers and sisters that live there they may have some oath keepers in the local police and didn’t even know it, good for them.

Many cities have noise ordinances. Excessive noise, i.e., honking, can probably be distracting to other drivers. Why risk causing accidents over this? If the drivers support these cretons, a thumbs up should do the trick.

Why can’t they all be arrested for disturbing the peace, loitering, or littering, indecent exposer, threatening the police or citizens, creating chaos, or rioting in the streets? I don’t get it. This can’t be good when you can get a ticket for honking. Whether you agree or not agreeing to what they are protesting. It’s a free choice to make as long as it dose not harm, hinder or obstructing someone business it still should be fine. This whole thing can not & should not turn in a direction where we can lose our rights & liberties just because of a honk or possible opinion. Today’s honk & tomorrow it could be anything. In almost every state it is illegal to use your vehicle horn unnecessarily. The citations are simple law enforcement. When the “occupy protesters” here in Columbia, Missouri try to block traffic on Broadway I would love to give them a good shove with my front bumper – but I don’t. I don’t break the law. And I really don’t want to hurt them but I do have the urge to try to knock some sense into them!!!!

Years ago when I lived in Florida it came across the news that honking was reserved for the purpose of alerting other drivers to danger, the guy who steps infront of a moving vehical, the driver who runs a red light etc. They were starting to ticket people for using their car horns for other purposes. Over the top, maybe, but this recent situation is not unique.
