Police Use Pepper Spray, Rubber Bullets on Occupy Denver Protesters Trying to Storm Capitol

Police clash with Occupy Wall Street protesters in Denver Saturday afternoon. Officers used pepper spray and rubber bullets to break up the crowds after demonstrators tried to storm the state Capitol building. (Denver Post)
Police officers dressed in riot gear used pepper spray and rubber bullets to try to quell an Occupy Denver demonstration Saturday as protesters attempted to occupy the Colorado Capitol building.
The Denver Post reported at least 20 arrests were made, including for assault and for disobedience. Police confirmed pepper spray and either rubber bullets or pepper balls were used to break up the marching crowd, which may have numbered up to 2,000.

Denver Police Lt. Matt Murray told the Post some protesters received medical treatment at the scene and one was taken to the hospital.

Murray said one officer was knocked off his motorcycle and others were attacked and kicked by protesters.
“Unfortunately at one point, that group did try to occupy the capital, which is illegal. We made sure that they knew that, it was pretty clear that they were not allowed to do that, they tried to do it anyway,” Murray said. “We had to step in and push them off. Things escalated; we did have to call out city-wide for assistance.”
The Post described the scene as protesters tried to take the building:
When the demonstrators returned to the state Capitol, they marched up the steps. Officers in riot gear moved in and formed a line.
Some protesters pushed them while others joked with the officers.
People were screaming over each other. Some were dancing to a boombox, others were pounding on an unmarked patrol car.
Several were shouting “Storm that castle.“ Others were shooting ”Stay calm.”
Protesters toward the front started fighting with each other after one encouraged another protester to quit taunting police.
Some then started chanting, “We want the governor.“ Others shouted ”We want the steps.”
At one point, about eight police officers scuffled with a group of protesters.
Seven protesters were initially arrested, with the additional arrests coming in the evening after protesters ignored police orders to disband, the Post reported.
Mike Korzen, 25, said he was among the protesters police dispersed with rubber bullets and pepper spray.
“I was standing there with my hands behind my back,” Korzen said, using a water bottle to wash pepper spray from his eyes.

The clashes come days after police broke up riots at the Occupy Oakland demonstration in California. A 24-year-old Iraq war veteran was wounded by an apparent police projectile, suffering a fractured skull and brain swelling, and is awaiting surgery.

It was difficult to understand at first why people would spend full time demonstrating but not really able to explain why they were doing it or giving cockamamie reasons that don’t make sense as to why they are there.
There are a few Libertarians and pro-big government people there who don’t understand economics, but want socialism in order to be provided for, but there’s also a hard core anarchist group who just love the idea of protesting. It has a romantic image in their minds. I’m pretty sure many of these same people were at the anti-capitalist events, taking off their clothes running through the street.
Bailing banks out and giving multi-million dollar golden parachutes to mediocre CEO talent are legitimate points of concern that has many supporters throughout the country comprised of many political persuasions, but the OWS protestors lose credibility when they stray from those kinds of legitimate concerns into areas where they think the government should give them everything free without realizing how stupid that sounds, because it’s impossible under any system, including communism. It’s been attempted many times and has always failed miserably.
I’m beginning to get the impression this whole debacle is going to backfire and cast Obama and Dem politicians in an anarchist light as people who are supporting violence and revolution.

They should do this in every city these squatters move into so the public isn’t responsible for footing the bill. The only way to get rid of them is to make the cost of being arrested prohibitive, although Spooky Dude, the unions and other leftist groups are probably footing the bills. Arrest enough of them, eventually cities will get out of debt, and maybe they will go home.

Excellent post. I see the day when the tea party people, you know, the 53% that just demand that the government follow the Constitution and return to the republic, will have to do something similar. Although I do not agree with the message of the OWS groups, they do have the courage to show up and push their agenda. We, those that want a return to Constitutional government, need to be out in mass and telling our reps to dump all agencies that are not in Article 1, Section 8. This would drop the need for high taxes and over-regulation, returning much of our freedoms. Maybe we could even return to the days when you could choose the color of toilet paper you wanted.

Home of Regis University (private/ Catholic) and Denver University (private/exclusive/and peaceful) as well as a smattering of smaller private and/or Christian institutions. There are no public universities based in Denver. Secondary campuses perhaps, but student based political activism is basically unknown in Denver– for that you need to go to Boulder or Fort Collins or Greeley– where the big state universities are located. So, WHY did Obama choose Denver to unveil his new student loan propaganda? Very strange indeed… and just days before violence erupts at the most base-less and astro-turfy of the “occupy” protests. With all of the Presidential visits these last couple years, Denver seems to be the chosen western states “hub” for the radical overthrow America movement. Ft Collins is mostly the middle. Ft Collins voted for Obama, but then voted out Betsy Markey (one of Sarah Palin’s famous targets) and voted in Conservative Republican Corey Gardner last year. CSU kids and people in there 70′s are the bulk of the Liberals in Ft Collins. Comparing the latest protests: Ft Collins had a Tea Party a while ago and there were A LOT more Tea Party people than OWS people. The Ft Collins OWS was a joke: 30 crazies yelling at passing cars. A Mormon friend went to the Tea Party in Ft Collins and said it was very peaceful, the people were all polite, and that he and his son enjoyed their time there.
Boulder is famous in Colorado for their crazy hippies and the uber-wealthy Liberal hypocrites. A friend wanted me to go to Boulder with him just to look at the freak show in Boulder. I declined.
Greeley: WARD CHURCHILL and University of Colorado! Need I say more? Aims Community College of Greeley is a great school though and presses no Liberal agenda last time I heard.
The rest of Colorado is basically Conservative.

Shotguns set up to fire beanbag rounds only are treated in a like manner. I’ve seen them with orange and neon green parts for easy identification.
